Hello cousin!

I am a descendant of Alexander John Pickering the brother of Charles William Pickering. I have been researching our family extensively for over 50 years and have a website at www.PickeringFamilyHistory.com.

In your heading you have identified the Pickerings of Sunderland, however our family was from Cheshire, originally from Frodsham, Liverpool and Wallasey. I would love to connect with you about the family so please write to me directly at Connie@QuicWebSolutions.com.

Hello once more.
Just doing some more research on your family name. I don't know whether you have Ancestry.com of not but I have just done some looking in there and found a lot of information
under the Family Tree section. Found that your gggrandfather's given name has been spelled at least two different ways.
This is a good start is looking under Family trees, in Ancestry.
Good luck in your searching.
E Marshall.

Although I was once a Pickering, I am not related to the Pickering that you are looking for.
Any way, I quickly did some research and found quite abit of information regarding Louis Emerson Pickering. You have to go to Ancestry.com and then fill in the necessary information and all the listings will come up such as: World I & II registrations, where he lived with his wife Alice, and his date of death.
Was not able to find any info' on Adelburt Pickering at all.
Hope this is of some assistance to you in your searching.
Take care,
E Marshall

My original query of 2002 was placed when I still thought I was descended from the New England and Quaker Pickerings. Subsequent information has proven this assumption false. I am descended from the William Pickering who came to Virginia as an indentured servant. There were two William Pickerings in Rockingham County at the time. One was a Quaker who was descended from the New England line and the other was my indentured ancestor. I no longer have any information about the New England line. Good Luck!

Hello William,

My name is Hugh Pickering. I have a brick wall with a William Pickering. My father William L. Pickering his father William Hanson, his father Isaac, his father Isaac Hanson Pickering b.14 Jul 1811 in Portsmouth, NH (family Records no Birth Certificate) Then I found a marrige record for a William Pickering and Abigail Hanson m. 16 May 1808 in Portsmouth. I feel that William and Abigail are Isaac's parents because Abigail's father's name is Isaac Hanson. The problem I am having is finding any record of them until Isaac Hanson Pickering was living in Brewer ME. Isaac served in the 1839 Aroostook War (called the bloodless war). He married Sarah King Cobb and they had one child Isaac She died in 1848. He sold out and he and son moved to WI.

I think I have good birth dates and death dates for both William and Abigail but no records. William b.1758 d. 1818 and Abigail b. 1784 d. 1855. I am not sure where William came from, John of Rockingham County, NH or John from Salem, MA. A story has been passed down through my family was that three or four brothers came over from England together but all went their seperate ways. Abigail's family were Quakers until the end of the Revolutionary war when Isaac Hanson came home and the Quakers ask him to repent his sins in fighting in the war. He refused and the Quakers disowned him. His families records stopped after that. If you can help me in any way I would be most grateful.

Thank you,
Hugh Pickering
Redmond, OR
hmpickon2@bendbroadband.com

Would it be better to send to a home e-mail address? Mary is absolutely certainly the sister of my 3xgreat grandfather Thomas.
So exciting to hear from you, Ann. Do you have a transcription of the will or scanned copy? Can this be the Joseph Pickering and wife Mary who were having children baptized between 1782 and 1799 in Gloucester, as shown in the Churcham and Bulley records? Children found from these records (LDS films 91515 & 417131) include Esther, Joseph, Emy, William Phelps, Sarah and Caroline.
I have nothing on Jospeh Rowles Pickering and Mary Phelps, and would appreciate any information you have. I have nothing on the Phelps family at all. I would certainly like some proof they my Joseph Pickering and wife Mary are the same as Joseph Rowles Pickering and Mary Phelps.
Mary and Ann. Thanks so much for responding. Mary, looks like we are definite cousins if your Caroline Pickering Jones is the same Caroline baptized 20 Jan 1800. Baptism record in registers of Churcham, Gloucesterm states that she was "of Bully". There were no records for Bulley (film 417131) for the years 1800 - 1803. Right? If so, your Caroline went to Ohio just a couple of years after her older siblings. I'll finish this directly to your e-mail. See photo of Joseph Pickering on my Ancestry public tree, "McGowan". Believe you should also be able to read my long narrative. Diane

Fascinated to see these posts. My 3x-great-grandmother was Caroline Pickering Jones (a younger sister of the Joseph, Wm,and Mary Pickering siblings you mention), dtr of Joseph Rowles Pickering and Mary Phelps. She was born abt 1800 and emigrated to Ohio w/her husb Charles Haywood Jones in 1836. They had 10 children. They were early (Primitive) Wesleyan Methodists and their first 6 children were baptized in Herefordshire. I would love to see any and all family history on the Pickerings and Phelps families. I have not been able to find parents for Ch Haywood Jones (b. abt 1796, m. 1825 to Caroline Pickering in Hartpury). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am able to receive scanned attachments at mary.dupont@comcast.net if you have any original records, documents, or stories you are willing to share. Thanks! Mary Dupont.

Before my marriage I was Ann Phelps. I have done extensive research on the Phelps family in Gloucester (my home until I married). I do not want to burden you with unwanted detail. You may already have everything since many people have recently started work on the same family. I'll list what I have and send you anything which might help.

Mary Phelps, Married to Joseph Rowles Pickering was the sister of my 4x great grandfather Thomas and I have a copy of the will of her brother William Phelps, who was quite wealthy and left money to "the children of Joseph Pickering by my late sister." Other Pickerings also benefitted from his will. There seems to have been a marriage in 1790 between James (brother of this William and my 4xgreat grandfather Thomas) to a Catherine Humpidge, but I have not traced their offspring if any. This James died in 1805. I have no proof, but my father believed that the family had been early Quakers and I have no reason to disbelieve this since my father was extremely interested in his family and in the City of Gloucester, where the Phelps family were (and still are) Freemen. I have the records of the Phelps Freemen going back to the 17th century if you do not already have them.

Hope I'm not wasting your time with info you already have.

Ann Lewis

I see that this is an old post but I will reply anyway. I have been given a gift of this family's research notes from a researcher, Paul Simmons from Arvada, Colorado, in 1970 while I was in graduate school at DU. I have posted it on World Connect recently and have shared it with a Pickering researcher who was a part of this family. I have not made connections from my Pickering ancestors to this group pf Pickerings but I am still working on it.

To answer your question, Yes, I have some of Paul's sources for his findings which he included in the notes he gave to me and would be pleased to share these notes with you. Send me your mailing address and I will send you his notes free of charge in honor of Paul whoo passed on his research with the expectation that I would pass it on to others of the Pickering surname about whom he was so proud.
William Pickering
williampic@yahoo.com

Hi, Have searched through my Sunderland Pickerings and I'm afraid there are no connections.
The family you are seeking were from Lancashire and Cheshire and are well documented. I assume you have them on the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 Census for Liscard, Cheshire.
If not let me know and I will post details.
They look like an interesting branch.
Good luck for your future searches. Don't hesitate to get in touch should you require any assistance.
Best wishes, Mick Pickering, Sunderland, England.

Seeking more information on the ancestors of Charles William Pickering who was born in England in 1841 and migrated to USA settled in Kansas. Dying in 1928. His father was Charles William Harrison Pickering and mother was Elizabeth Catherine WALKER. Charles WH Pickering's parents were William PICKERING and Caroline Amalie Friedrieke STEFFENS.

Does any of these names seem familiar in relationship to your Pickering research?

Courtesy Post

NESSLEY (Millar) Virginia M. (Millar) Nessley, 87, passed away peacefully at The Woodlands of Columbus, Ohio on Thursday, September 8, 2011.

She was born January 27, 1924 in Reynoldsburg, Ohio to the late Agnes (Pickering) and Jacob Wason Millar.

Surviving are her husband, David M. Nessley, Sr; daughter, Sharon (Craig Copenhefer) Sellitto; step-children, David M. Nessley, Jr., Jan (George) Tully; step-grandchildren, Jonathan Nessley, Jason Tully, Sarah (Adrian) Garza; and step-great-granddaughter, Mia Garza; many dear relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death are her husbands Clifford E. Viles and Clair B. Cosner, son Paul Steven Cosner, brothers Francis (Evelyn), Carlos (Nancy), Paul (Maebelle), Howard (Mary) and infant son Millar, sisters Mary Catherine (Phil) Shannon and baby Lucy Millar, step-daughter Doris (Cosner) Nolan and her dear kitty Carmel.
A Procurement Agent at Defense Construction Supply Center, Virginia retired after 31 years of service. She took pride in being part of the Red Ball Express during the Vietnam War, providing soldiers with everything they needed to perform their duties and keep safe.

A life member of Reynoldsburg United Methodist Church and member of the Reynoldsburg-Truro Historical Society, Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society, and Reynoldsburg Alumni Association where she and Dave attended many banquets filled with great memories, much laughter, and wonderful friendships.

The Valedictorian of Pickerington High School class of 1941, Virginia was very proud to be the great, great, great niece of Squire Abraham Pickering who founded Pickerington, Ohio in 1815. Until recently, the Squire's farm was still in the family.
After it was sold Virginia shared many family heirlooms with the historical society for display.
An avid reader who treasured her library card, Virginia loved genealogy and took great joy in the Millar Family Reunion which has been held for 116 years uniting many relatives to share good food, good times and good genes.

She was also a 25+ year member of the Mathias Ridenour Chapter of the D.A.R.
Virginia lived the life of a mid-western wife and mother who enjoyed working, square dancing, fishing, and flowers.

All of that life changed in 1984 when her only son, Paul, disappeared without a trace from his San Francisco home. Upon hearing the news from her daughter, Virginia and Dave immediately came to search, support, and attempt to find Paul. Nearly a year later, two men were caught driving Paul's car. One of the men killed himself and one escaped, but clues in the car stopped two serial killers in their tracks. This event gave birth to Virginia Nessley, Crime Victim's Rights Advocate. No one, was going to kidnap and murder her son and get away with it. After months of searching the murderer was caught in Canada. Until then, no one had ever been extradited to face the death penalty. Virginia, her family, and other victim's families wrote letters, petitioned, lobbied Parliament, and fought to the Supreme Court, changing Canadian Law, and the accused murderer was extradited to California to face 12 counts of murder with death penalty specifications. After another eight years of relentless prodding by Virginia, the case was tried and 14 years after Paul's murder the killer was given 12 death sentences. She often referred to the 14 years of hell as her own personal holocaust.

Eventually, Virginia finally regained a little joy in her life after her daughter moved back to Granville, Ohio. Virginia and Dave spent so much time in Granville at parades, parks, parties, and quilt shows that she earned the nickname around town as "Cute-as-a-Button Virginia." And she was!

To honor Virginia's request, there will be no services. Private interment will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville, Ohio.(Licking County)

Contributions in her memory made to Honor Flight Columbus, 2185 Ridgecliff Rd., Columbus, OH 43221, would be treasured. Honor Flight transports WWII veterans to see their memorial in Washington D.C. or the Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society.
Arrangements are in the care of McPEEK-HOEKSTRA FUNERAL HOME in Granville, Ohio.

To ensure family receipt, please express all online condolences at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com
Published in The Columbus Dispatch on September 11, 2011
My Charles Pickering was born in England around 1770. It was his son Charles, born in Sydney who went to Fiji, so there was no direct emigration from England to Fiji at this time. Perhaps another Pickering at a later date. I am trying to find the first Charles birth cert/place. Check my earlier post for more details.

Have just read you query regarding the Pickerings. Although I was once a Pickering and have done alot of research regarding mu father's family. My father was William Edwin Pickering II, with his father being William Edwin also. The only Charles is a distant uncle of my father. I have him listed as Charles William Pickering (1845-1909, Roos, Yorkshire, England. His parents were Michael Pickering (1821-1896) and his wife Hannah Wilkinson (1823-1910). Just checking we are related to Charles William, but to my knowledge and corresponding with one of my cousins in England who has done a lot of research on our particular lineage of the Pickering Family Tree none of the family had ever moved to Fiji or lived there. Matter of fact after adding to the research that my cousin Ian had done was when I learned that my great grandfather was named Charles William and not William as I had originally knew it. Now I don't know whether this has been any assistance to you, but I have further information that I could possibly assist you.
Thank you for your query,
Regards, Edith Marshall

Hi I am researching a Charles Pickering who ended up in Fiji in the 1830's, who had 20 wives and lots of kids! He died there in 1867. He was born in 1814 in Sydney, the son of Charles Pickering, convict, who arrived in the NSW colony in 1807 with "letters of recommendation from the Duke of Leeds and several other Gentlemen of Respectability". This got him an immediate pardon. He had been tried and convicted at the Norwich summer Assizes in 1806 of 'having forged banknotes in his possession' and sentenced to 14 years transportation. I would dearly love to find out how he was known to the Duke of Leeds and where he might have been born. Any help appreciated.

Hello Krystie:
Have received and read your e-mail. To my knowledge we have no Elizabeth Ada Pickering in our family tree. I have not come across many Elizabeth's and a couple of Ada's in developing the Pickering Family Tree. As I have only been interested in the Michael-William arm of the Pickering tree-of which my father is related. My father does have an Aunt called Ada, and according to the information I have she was either still born or died at birth, so that is no help. Would you by any chance have the date and place of birth for whom you are looking for? I have researched back to 1736 for our family lineage.
Would you by any chance have any idea what lineage did she have? In my findings there are many Pickerings in England so there are a lot to research to go through. My relatives that I am speaking about come from the Hull, Roos, and the eastern section of England.
I may be of assistance to you if I knew more about the year of birth and place where most of her family resided.

Your truly
Edith Marshall
I will then try my best to find all I can, but a few clues would be useful as there are a lot of Pickerings out there!!
Best wishes, Mick Pickering, Sunderland.
Might be a long shot seeing as this thread was started in 2008 but I was wondering if you had any information on Elizabeth Ada Pickering, who married Joseph Henry Handford in about 1895. She had 5 brothers, William, Thomas, Angus, John and Henry and one sister, Ada. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Re: John, Gabriel, Moses and Benjamin Pickering

I haven't really analyzed the Pickering data from the 1700's, but have just collected info on any records I run across. I descend from a Gabriel Pickering who was in Franklin/Lincoln Counties, MS in early 1800's. We suspect he's the son of the Gabriel in NC. What I am sure of is that my line goes back to Aven Pickering through his son Thomas A. whose son was Henry James. Some say Aven's father was Gabriel although I suspect it could've been Joseph Pickering who was in Lincoln/Franklin counties by 1820. I have not seen any sources that confirm who Aven's father was; if anyone has documentation, I would love that mystery to be solved. Who are you descended from?

Thank You for that info. I'll have to check it out.
I have John, Benjamin, Gabriel, Moses, and Richard as sons of Gabriel. How about you? I'll have to check into how I have verified that, as I have not worked on my Pickron family tree in over a year. Are you from this line?
Nice chatting with you,
Crystal
