Looking for Ephraim and Zula Picket. I can only find the family in the 1850 Ellenburg, Clinton, New York census. In the household were Ephraim Picket 69, Zula Picket 58, Sylvester Picket 21, Ephraim Picket 18, and Amasa Picket 1. I'd love to find earlier info about the family, who Zula was, and who Ephraim Sr.s parents are.

Hello Margie!

We are very likely related.

My GGGGG grandfather was Albert Picket of Cincinatti, Ohio. His son, Dr. Charles Picket was a physician in Delaware County, Ohio. I think that Dr. Picket married a Nancy Lyman and had a son named Albert. He later married Isabella Ball Webb and they had three children.... Dr. Charles and Esther and John, all born in Deleware County, Ohio. Esther was born in 1837. I believe that she married a man named Frank Rezner and had at least one child with him. She and Frank are shown in the 1860 Clinton, Iowa census as having one child. I don't know whether they were divorced or if Rezner died. Esther married Joseph Foster Lincoln, shortly after that. When her mother, Isabella, died in Ohio in 1874, Esther was listed as "Mrs. Esther P. Lincoln of Del Norte, Colorado" and, at that time, the only surviving child of Isabella's marriage to Dr. Picket.

Isabella and Dr. Charles Picket were my great great great grandparents. The Picket and Ball families were quite notable educators and physicians.

If you can provide any additional information on any of the Picket's and their offspring, I would be ever grateful.

Mike Fisher
Tampa Bay
Toll Free 1 800 795 9116

Hello. I got your message thru Ancestry, so you must have done all the right things.

I agree that our Pickets do not match. The timing is off.
But, I am fascinated that you got the book on your Pickets that gave so much of their history and filled in some gaps. I know how happy you must have been having been through that myself.

After a search for a few years, I was lucky enough to find a copy of a book written by the Rev. John Seger in 1863. It detailed his birth (1786) and upbringing in New York City where he was ordained at the 1st Baptist Church and his subsequent ministry at a Baptist Church in New Jersey, etc. Despite the maddening fact that he seldom gave first names, it really was a breakthrough for me. He does not not mention his children, except a married daughter who died young, including a three page poem that he wrote to her.

My interest was in his son, Rev. John Seger, Jr., who was ignored completely. Then came chapter after chapter about his religious conversion and "a few words of comfort, exhortation and counsel to various classes of readers." Still, I am thrilled to have found this book from a Trenton, NJ dealer in rare books. I had traced some of this thru church history, but this was bonanza of info on some his family.

So, I hope that your book revealed much for for you. Thanks for responding to my query and following up by looking through all of your research.

Nancy Seger

Nancy - hope this gets to you - I tried sending this before.

Hi Nancy - I have some problems sending a reply to you on ancestry -

We may be talking about two different Picket families. I finally was =
able to get a copy of the Pickets of New York City and Ohio which is the =
family history of Albert Picket. I learned a lot of new things. It =
said that Albert Picket, a motherless child was brought to the Colonies =
by his father who was an officer in the King's army. Now this means =
that they came AROUND the time of the Revolutionary War - so that means =
he was here much earlier than the family thought. We did not have a =
wife's name originally and the book says he married Esther Rockwell =
Hull.

So these must be two different Picket families. =20

I looked through the 40 pages and don't see anything else that matches. =
Sorry.

Margie
Hi Margie,
Oh, how I would like to get even the tiniest clue about the Pickets. However, I don't know where they came from in England. Do you have any Pickets from Kent, Eng.(possibly the Wye/Ashford area)? I say this because I think that the Pickets of Cleveland were acquainted with the Smiths of Mitchell, Ontario back in England. The Picket siblings married Smith siblings. And I have a Canadian Smith 3rd cousin who has a mystery Cleveland connection that we cannot figure out as yet. I was surprised to discover that any of my family had ever lived in the US until me. But, I have found my g grandmother Jane Picket lived in Ohio from about 1853 to 1870 when James Smith came from Canada to marry her and take her back to Ontario.

I don't think Arthur and Elizabeth Kidd Picket were in NYC because their daughter was born in England and their son was born two years later in Cleveland.

Nancy
Hello Nancy:

I am researching Albert Picket who was born in England and brought over by his father, an officer in the King's Army. I am wondering whether your Arthur and my Albert might have been brothers or cousins?

Albert became a famous educator in New York City and then in Ohio before his death in 1850.

I do have some information on this Picket family,

Margie

Arthur Picket
birth: England in early 1800's
death: probably Cuyahoga Co., Ohio prior to 1860??
spouse: Elizabeth Kidd, born in England.
children: Jane Elizabeth Picket, 1852 in England
John Arthur Picket, 1854 in Cleveland

Neither Arthur nor Elizabeth are on the 1860 or 1870 Ohio census reports. (In fact not in any states) Jane and brother John are on the 1870 living in other Ohio households as employees.

John married Mira Ward and moved to Michigan and Jane married Andrew Smith from Perth County, Ont in 1871 and moved to Canada.

Nancy

Town of Newburyport, MA looking for descendants of Dolly Catherine Picket and Jacob Willard Pierce regarding crypt breakin

The town of Newburyport, MA is looking for any descendents of Capt. Nicholas Pierce (1761-1812). He was a sea merchant and died in Newburyport, MA. A family crypt in the "OId Hill Burying Ground" was broken in by vandals on August 20, 2005 and the town is looking for descendents of Capt. Nicholas Pierce to place the bones back in the crypt. The recovered bones (found outside the tomb...including a skull) has to be claimed by family before they can be placed back in the crypt. The New England Genealogical Historic Society has been contacted and it is believed that Nicholas Pierce had 2 sons...Jacob Willard Pierce (1788-1846) and Nicholas Pierce Jr. It is believed that the 2 sons and their wives are also buried in the crypt. Jacob Williard Pierce married Dolly Catherine Picket and the two had 13 children, including Willard Balch Pierce (who built the crypt). Nicholas Peirce Jr. married Rebecca Davenport, who passed away in 1863. The historians believe that Rebecca would have been the last family member laid to rest there and that is why "1863" is at the top of the crypt. If anyone knows of any descendents, please contact the town of Newburyport, MA or me.

Pickets living in Stamford, Fairfield, CT in 1880's

I am searching for my Irish ancestors who were illiterate and had their last name spelled three ways: Picker, Picket and Pickert depending upon the writer.

My grandmother was Elizabeth Aline Picker. She was born in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut on 8 Apr 1882 to John Picker and Ellen Gillen, Her parents and older sister Louise show up on the 1880 Census (Louise was 4). Family tradition had that John died during the pregnancy with Elizabeth (Bessie). Louise, Bessie & their mother Ellen went to live with an "Aunt Picket". As a quite young girl, Bessie went down stairs to tell "Aunt Picket" that she couldn't wake her mother up. From that time until she was self-supporting (at least by the 1900 Census) she continued to live with the "Aunt Picket". Most of the spellings have John's name as Picker. For a few years at the turn of the century Bessie was the "sole-support" of a younger female cousin. As soon as the younger cousin could support herself, Bessie left Connecticut and moved to Washington State. I think John Picker's parents were William and Mary Picker. I think Ellen's parents were John and Mary Gillen. I do know that in 1880 Ellen's younger brother Michael was living with them. Everyone except Louise and Elizabeth (Bessie) were born in Ireland. After many years of dead-ends I am hoping someone will have heard of them. Thank you.
Joyce Rahn
joycerahn@juno.com
