Re: William Fredrick Pickford (1882) and Wiltshire Pickfords (1901 census)

I have found a William Pickford who was a prisoner sent from Chester, Cheshire, England and sent to New South Wales Australia on the vessel Morley conviction date 9 apr 1829 voyage date 5 aug 1829.Not saying that this is your William Pickford as I think to find out anything much you need dates approximate would do for a start.I don't want to just jump and accept the connection and I am sure you would agree that it would be wrong to do so. Although I have checked the Pickford Tree I have and not found any connections I don't want to dismiss the connection. So the best way to start is to build from what you have, as I don't have that much so I cannot build a clear picture at present.

The above William info is information obtained from a separate search on your name it came up with said William Pickford. So if you could supply dates of birth etc then we may get somewhere.

Sorry for not giving you better news at present but I will help if I can to connect you to whomever ends up being your Pickford Family you are looking for it may end up being the one we have recorded above, somewhere as I recall another branch I did not even really look at and I did a lot of digging to find all of the above.Wellow seems to be the ancestral home of Pickford's.

I am in Australia - my name is William James Pickford - I have been trying to do some research on my family history and your posts seem like they could be part of my past.
Was there a Stockport family that developed? That's where I grew up, I had a grandfather called William - uncle Frank, Phillip, Bernard, my father was William George Pickford
Can you shed any light or possibly direct me to someone that could?
Thank you

Bill Pickford

This has revealed an Edward Pickford Jone born in 1838 in Manchester.

Has anyone come across the Pickford Jones name elsewhere which presumable arose from a marriage by a Pickford wife to a Jones husband.

Any information would be appreciated.

Simon Pickford

Hi Mike

Have spent quite a bit of time looking into Samuel with his Irish wife Alice. I have them in my tree and the best confirmation of the family group seems to be the 1861 census where Samuel was living with the George Upton who seemed to be training some of them as plumbers! Samuel and Alice had 2 children at that stage - Ellin b 1841 and Alice b 1846. I can't find Samuel and Alice in 1851 census (maybe in Ireland!) but the date seems to fit with him in the 1841 census as a son of Robert b 1788 and Alice Pickford who were living in Romiley. Robert was the eldest son of Peter Pickford b 1762 and Hannah Bretland. This Peter Pickford is the brother of my 4x Great grandfather John Pickford. We have a fairly complete tree for these two brothers but you may be a able to add to it!!

David Cooper is a distant cousin of mine who has been a friend of the family for some years. The Steven Pickford to whom he refers is my late father. If you would like to continue correspondence privately - please email me on simonpickford@blueyonder.co.uk.

Kind regards

Simon Pickford
Birmingham

Hi Simon,

David didn't respond, so I am no further back. My Samuel never seemed to make it passed a over-looker cotton carder, despite one daughter's thoughts that he was an engineer of some sort. My gran always thought there could have been some sort of link to the removers. She lived with us and we drove passed the Pickford site between Broom Lane and Cringle Road, Levenshulme, very many times in the late 50s and 60s.

The PICKFORD/CARROLL marriage would be around 1828/1831. Alice's age does move around a bit on the census! But the first child appears to have been Daniel born around 1831.

Do you know if the move to Hyde from Mellor was with the John PICKFORD that David mentioned? That would potentially narrow the search area down for the marriage. (There is a John PICKFORD death recorded on FreeBMD in the June quarter of 1840 in Stockport.) There is nothing yet on FreeReg.

Cheers

Mike

Mike

In that area there were a group of Pickfords in Mellor - probably farmer and a Samuel in Lower Hall , Mellor that went back to the early 1700s with a Samuel in every generation - don't really have trees for these but got some info of the IGI.

The Pickford group I am interested in was in Mill Brow - not far from Mellor around 1800. This group was engaged in the early Cotton Industry and later moved to Hyde with my 3 x GG Joshua Pickford mananging the Greenfield Mill there around 1840. This group we think originated from Adlington where there are links with the Pickford removers branch.

Simon Pickford
Birmingham

David,

Thank you for the info. Is there any way that you know that we can link these families together? I'm guessing that a will hasn't left. If we could find the marriage of Samuel to Alice CARROLL a witness name may help.

Are the records from the Independent Chapel likely to have more info than C of E records? I now live well away from Mellor so further research is not going to be easy. I had noticed that a lot of PICKFORDs were located around Macclesfield.

I have also seriously struggled to track my lot through the later censuses. The only really successfull one was my 2 x gt grandmother, Mary.

I would be most grateful for anything you feel you could let me have. I could let you have whatever I have.

Thanks again

Regards

Mike

Mike

Your Pickford ancestor is likely to be related to John Pickford (1764 - 1840) who had eleven children, one of them my great-great-grandfather Joshua P. (1797 - 1843).They were brought up in Mellor, at Mill Brow, Marple Bridge. The father and some of the children were employed at Bridget Mill but some moved to down the valley to Hyde after the Napoleonic Wars. Previously the family had lived in Cheshire, near Macclesfield and had moved to the Mewllor area. We think that there were some Pickfords already there, moving there around 1690.

In later years they were all much involved with the Independent Chapel in Hyde (now demolished> there are now very few actual Pickfords left in this line.

My now-deceased cousin Steven Pickford has left a lot of family history from 1820 onwards that is probably of no direct use to you. Work on the eighteenth century and before is very difficult.

Let me know if I can be of further use.

David Cooper

PICKFORD of Mellor, Drbyshire

Hi Folks

It looks like my Samuel PICKFORD was born around 1808 in Mellor, Derbyshire. At some point he met met Alice CARROLL from Carlow, Ireland and by 1841 they were in Hyde, Cheshire. (Transcribed by Ancestry as "TACKFORD".

There are at least two other PICKFORD households a few streets away. A 35-40 year old Charles PICKFORD and a 35-40 year old William PICKFORD. All were NOT born in the county of Cheshire.

I would be grateful for any information.

Kind regards

Mike

Do you have any names? My Nan's mother was a Pickford from the Stoke area, she was Ethel May, I think she had a sister called Gertrude. Their Dad was Henry George and Mom was Annie (Sockett)also known as Mary. I know Ethel May died around 1905 in chid birth and the Nan came to Wolverhampton to bring up my Nan who was only about 2 years old when her Mom died.

Re: William Fredrick Pickford (1882) and Wiltshire Pickfords (1901 census)

I was contacted by Jess to help in locating William Frederick Pickford who I had down in my tree as being born 1870 in Wiltshire, connected to Edith Mary Pope.Edith was born 15th of December 1872 in Hill Deverill Wiltshire and her parents were John Pope born 1844 Over Kingcombe Dorset and Eliza Rebecca Jefferys born 1840 Maiden Bradley Wiltshire, (I do have exact dates of birth for her parents but have not included here),John is a brother of my Great Grandfather William Wilmot Pope.

To get back to the Pickford side Jess urged me to get a copy of William and Edith's marriage that Jess has quoted the date of. After which I went searching for the family now knowing William Frederick Pickford's date of birth to be abt 1882 and found said info about his direct family which include siblings:- Frederick Bird Pickford born abt 1883, George Ashby Pickford born abt 1883, (twins?), Margaret Pickford born abt 1884, (this is obviously JESS's link to the family),Eunice Ada Pickford born abt 1886, Arthur Bernard Pickford born abt 1887 and died 1984, and Leonard Ashby Pickford born abt 1889 and died 1910.I have found all of William's siblings from Eunice down were born Longbridge Deverill Wiltshire, the others were born in Wellow Somerset, as was William Frederick Pickford.

Their parents as stated were as I found by the aid of firstly the marriage cert. and then the evidence of the census were a William Pickford , (this I got from the cert), born 1845 in Laverton Somerset and Sarah Jane Bird born 1851 in Wellow Somerset, Sarah's parents were a Fredrick Bird born abt 1809 in Writhlington Somerset England and a Harriet ? born abt 1809 in Marston Somerset England.

I have also found a marriage of William Frederick Pickfords sibling George the details are:- George Ashby Pickford's marriage to Mabel Sophia Tisseman in 1907, Mabel was born abt 1883 Bath Avon Somerset and her parents were a William James Tisseman and Mary Smith, William was born 1848 in Scarborough Yorkshire and died 13 September 1943 in Warminster Wiltshire. Mabel's parents marriage took place in 1876 Bath Avon Somerset. The Tisseman Tree goes back to the 01/05/1751 and to a John Tyzeman Tissiman born in Brompton Yorkshire England.

As for William snr, I have found this his parents were George Pickford born abt 1795 in Dilton Westbury Wiltshire and Joanna Ashby, (? whether right on surname but I noted this is what Christopher Pope has down and he is normally correct as he checks everything before including in his Tree).Joanna Ashby was born abt 1806 Beckington Somerset not Beckton Somerset as Jess has copied.

George and Joanna's children were:- Edward Pickford born abt 1829 in Laverton Somerset,Daniel Pickford born abt 1830 Laverton Somerset, (he married a Amelia Hobbs who was born abt 1843 Trowbridge Wiltshire in Longbridge Deverill Wiltshire 1889 but did have another wife I think later.Sarah Ann Pickford born ? but have down 1830 Laverton Somerset,Henry Pickford born abt 1831 Laverton Somerset,Francis George Pickford born abt 1833 Laverton Somerset died 1892 Warminster Wiltshire who married a Eliza ? who was born abt 1833 Nunney, I have not found record as yet.Martha Pickford born abt 1836 Laverton Somerset.James Pickford born abt 1838 Laverton Somerset who I have linked to a Elizabeth born 1839 Norton St Phillip Somerset,Charles Pickford born abt 1840 Laverton Somerset who married a Clara Holvey born 1845 Dunkerton Somerset in Bath Avon Somerset Volume 5c Page 994 Quarter of Registration Jul-Aug-Sep in 1872.Then we have Mary Pickford born abt 1842 in Laverton Somerset, John Pickford born abt 1844 Laverton Somerset who married a Emma Howell Volume 5c Page 858 in Frome Somerset in 1868, Emma was born abt 1847 in Monkton Farleigh Wiltshire. Then we have William Pickford who we already know of who was born 1845 Laverton and married above named party + had above named children. Then comes Samuel Pickford born abt 1849 Laverton Somerset who married a Lily Mary Long in Bath Avon Somerset Volume 5c Page 855 in 1896, Lily was born abt 1860 Hinton Blewett Somerset. Finally Joanna Pickford who at the moment I have down as born abt 1853 Laverton Somerset but also have found as Jess mentions Schannah in the 1841 census I think this is a miss prenounciation of Joanna if so the 1841 census record could be talking about Joanna Ashby but there is a Jonna mentioned there as well, I do have evidence of a Joanna as a child of George and Joanna so big question mark on this person as 1841 census says one thing and later says another date for birth so could be two completely different people. On the other hand I could be intirly wrong and Schannah is just a person we have not found other than in the 1841 census meaning she could have died.?

That is about all for now,
Regards,
Michael Andrew Pope
Researching the Pope's of Toller Dorset
William Fredrick Pickford (1882) and Wiltshire Pickfords (1901 census)

Myself and two others (who will undoubtly add bits that I have missed to this topic) have been trying to piece together what seems to be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle! I will pass this information on to you...which should also help us all check we have the same info too!

My grandmothers' mother was Margaret Pickford (d. 1947) who was married to Sydney Newby (b.1889 d.1945) in 1919. Margaret's father was William Pickford (b. 1845) and her mother Sarah Jane Bird. She had a number of brothers and sisters. Fredrick B (b.1884), George A (b.1884), [then Margaret], Eunice Ada (1886), Arthur B (b. 1888) and Leonard (b.1889). Leonard died young, and Eunice moved to Canada where we know there are decendants (Joyce and Eddy??) There was also a Bernard, who my mother remembers him visting them - he could have been Arthur and known by his second name...but this would have made him quite old!

The above information can be found on the 1901 census. They were living at Long Nor Farm in Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire.

My grandmother also remembers an Uncle Willy. The information we are trying to connect is whether this Uncle Willy could be the same William Pickford (b.1882) who married Edith Mary Pope on Feb 17th 1908. Williams location on the certificate is down as Longbridge Deverill. Williams' father William Pickford attended the wedding, but no other family members did, which is strange.

Also strange, the dates seem to tie him in to my great grandmother's family...but he is not on the 1901 census with them - he would have been older, so maybe he had already moved away. The entire family also fail to appear in the 1891 census, where William jnr should have appeared!

I have found who I think could be William jnr - he's the right age and is living as a boarder in Stockport, Lancashire in 1901. He is also down as being born in Stockport I think (the handwritting is really bad!), which doesn't quite tie in!

To add more to an already long post...William Snr's Parents are George (b.1795 Westbury d.1870) and Jonna (Joanna, b~1806 Beckton Somerset). George appeares on the 1841 census with one group of children (and no mentioned mother) and again on the 1861 census with another lot of children, but with a few overlaps! These children are [1841] Schannah, Edward, Henry, Daniel, Francis George (married in 1858), Sarah Ann, James [1861] Sarah A, Martha, Charles, Mary, John, William (as here) and Jonna. All would have had the name Pickford. They were at New Barn Farm, Laverton in 1861. George lived to be 75...so he must have done something right!

I hope this helps what seems to be a difficult name to trace - maybe the 14 children of George explain the large number of Pickfords who can be traced to Wiltshire!!

With thanks to Michael for all his input so far - great detective work :)

Jess

Hi Heather!
How strange the Booth co-incidence!?
The earliest Pickford I can find (although I KNOW that there are earlier ones) is my Gt. Gt. Grandmother, Sarah Pickford who married Edwin Pyatt in 1840. Her Father is shown as William Waine on her marriage certificate and I'm not sure about the reason for this as I know that her own Father came from Macclesfield Forest area but I'm unsure of his name. Does any of this information ring any bells with you at all?
Best wishes
Kathy P.S Where do your Husband's Booth's come from? I'm researching that side of my family too.
Hi Rosemary,

Unfortunately I'm a hundred years behind you, with almost as little information. Samuel PICKFORD married Alice CARROLL, having Mary in June of 1838.

If you haven't already got a name for the convent try a Google search. It's possible records still exist and as you are an immediate descendant you may stand a good chance of accessing them. The aim beyond that is to get back to the 1901 census.

Good luck

Mike

Hi - having seen all your posts.

I was wondering if any of you have a Susannah or Susan Pickford in your family data. Susannah born 1781, was married to James Alder. She was my third great grandmother.I would be grateful for any clues, as I have just found her.

thanks
Angela
