Anthony P. Pico Jr - Mahoning County, Ohio

BOARDMAN – Anthony P. Pico Jr., 82, passed away Wednesday morning at the Cleveland Clinic.

“Tony” was born on Aug. 17, 1929, in Youngstown, Ohio the son of Verna V. (Hatala) and Anthony P. Pico Sr., and lived most of his life in Campbell, Ohio.

He was a 1947 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School and attended Youngstown College.

In 1951, he was drafted and served as a M.P. where he was eventually stationed in Germany from March of 1951, until March of 1953.

Prior to entering the service, he worked in the Mill and later became an insurance agent for American General for approximately 10 years after leaving the service.

He met his wife, the former Christa Maria Schäffner, while he was stationed in Germany and they married in June of 1953.

He founded the Acme Bonding Agency in 1964, with his partner and the company is still in existence after 48 years.

He was a member of the American Legion in Campbell, Ohio the VFW in Ft. Myers, Fla., a member of St. Lucy Church and its Men’s Society.

Tony was a gift. Anyone who ever knew him remembered him. His personality was infectious, in a good way. Whether he was playing cards with his buddies at the VFW, cooking at various functions, at home watching a sporting event or discussing politics, he never held back his feelings. You knew when Tony was around.

“As a kid, I thought my Dad was the Mayor or the President – he knew everyone and everyone knew him.”

Tony was a simple man but was incessant when it involved the things he loved. He never shied away from his passion for gambling (if there was an All-American Team, he would have been on it) or making spaghetti sauce from the tomatoes he grew (he was a fabulous, self-taught cook).
He loved watching the Indians, Browns or Red Devils football, he put his heart and soul into it.

Tony and Chris loved their winter home in Ft. Myers where they spent the last 32 years.

“We were always sad to see them leave in January of each year, but like the winter birds, they would always return in May, just in time to celebrate Mother’s Day.”

He truly loved his hometown of Campbell, Ohio and made everyone he knew know just how proud he was to have lived here and raised his family.

He was the best friend, loyal to the bitter end and died having no regrets.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Chris; they would have been married for 59 years; his children, Pat, Polly (Bill) Dobich and Kathy (Gary) Gulu; five grandchildren, Aaron (Danielle), Lorrin, Leslie, Anthony and Angelo; and a brother, Rick (Kathy) Pico from Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Steve, who passed away in 1998.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell and at 1:30 p.m. at the Christ the Good Shepherd at St. Lucy Catholic Church

The Pico family has entrusted their loved one to the care of the Wasko Funeral Home and will receive friends on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Visit www.waskofamily.com to view this obituary and to send the Pico family condolences.

Hi Helene,

Candelaria Pico and Frank Lessett were my great-great grandparents. I don't know a lot about Candelaria, but can tell you that they had several daughters and I think 1 son. Their daughter Mary was my great grandmother, who married John Alegria. They lived at the Alegria ranch just north of Santa Barbara, where I live. Mary died in 1987 at the age of 84. Let me know if you have other info.

Hi,

I am told my family is related as well. My Grandmother was a Zumaya but her mother is a Romero and, if memory serves correctly, there is some relation to Pio Pico and the Juaneno Indians. The more I look, the more confused I get with all of these names. Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my name is Maria and I have been searching for information on Solomon Maria Pico, he is my great great grandfather. I read several accounts that he was a bandit and fled to Baja California to escape from american justice. He had a son (Jose Murillo Pico) with his mistress Salustiana Murillo. Jose M. Pico is my great grandfather and the father of my grandfather Andres Romero Pico. My lineage is mainly on the mexican side. I have been to Familysearch.org and to the Pico website for rest of the family history. I wanted to know what he may have looked like. Thank you.

Senora Maria Isabel PICO OBIT

San Luis Obispo Pioneer (September 1869)
Monday September 6,1869 Vol. 2 # 35

Death Of A Venerable Lady.-Senora Maria Isabel PICO died a few days since, in Castroville, at the age of 98. She was the wife of Dolores PICO, who came to California in the last century, and the two were the parents of ancestors of all the Picos in the northern part of the State.-Six sons and seven daughters, including Antonio Maria PICO, who died four month ago, grew to manhood and woman hood. The
daughters married into the CASTRO, AVILA, FELIS, BEJUR, VILLA, PORNBER and BERNAL families. Dolores PICO was the brother of the ancestor of the Southern Picos; his wife was nearly related to the VALLEJOS, COTOS, and HUGOS. She leaves more than a hundred descendants to mourn her death, and probably a thousand relatives who can easlily trace relationship to her by blood or marriage.
Hello again~

Here is more information I found from a line I found from rootsweb.

One reference said that Santiago Pico's father was Pio Pico who was born either in New Spain or Spain.

The original line is Count "Mazzi" Pio Pico born in Italy in 1600.> Pio Pico b. 1628 in Spain> Pio Pico II b. 1657 in Spain> Pio Pico III born in 1690 Spain/New Spain. His son Santiago Pico was born in 1733 in New Spain/Mexico.

Santiago de La Cruz Pico married Maria Jacinta Vastida and had seven children.

One of the seven children were Jose Miguel Pico. I am descended from him. Jose Miguel Pico married Ma Casilda (y Bojorguez) Sinoba/Sinova. They had a daughter Maia Clara Pico. Maia married Juan Silvereste Olivas. They had a daughter named Maria de la Luz (y Pico) Olivas. My ggg grandfather Apolinario P. (y Cota) Romero married Maria de La Luz (y Pico) Olivas. (In some references Apolinario married to a different woman, and it hasn't been proved) From Apolinario and Maria they had a son named Martin Romero. The line came from there, Stanley Romero, Christopher Cuevas Romero, Christopher A. Romero, and then me.

May this information help your research.

Ricky

I have the birth dates for these two daughters if you need them.

Maria de las Olivas married Thomas Botiller. In your quest for infomation I would be interested in any info on that family. I actually have it back 3 generations, but am looking for some family history on this family. The only thing that I know is that he was a Jewelerer in Los Angeles and he and his wife died quite young leaving the children orphans.

Be glad to share any information

Ann

She was born Alice Carpenter (daughter of John Carpenter and Graciela Jaramillo) and was the sister of my great grandfather, Frank Carpenter. I am hoping that a descendent of hers may have more information on the Carpenter and Jaramillo familes who lived in Los Angeles in the 1800's. I know that Lemuel Carpenter and Don Pio were compadres. If this is your line, I would love to exchange what information I have with you. Thanks!
Marina (Curtis) Tidwell
