I am trying to figure out if John Moore Picton (b. 1860) is in fact the son of Charles T. Picton (1832-1897)and ?brother of David Means Picton. John Moore Picton is the father of Eliza "Lida" Means Picton (1887-1956) who is my great-grandmother, and I am trying to figure out if she is in fact a descendant of the Pictons of Trelach and Whitechurch.

Any help is much appreciated!!

John Picton born England 1794

John Picton was born in England about 1794. He died in Maitland, NSW, Australia in 1854.
He married Martha Monk in 1824 at Enfield, Middlesex, England.
He was sent to Australia in 1828 as a convict. He later returned to England, then returned to Australia with his wife Martha and four sons, John, William, Charles and Joseph. Two daughters were born in Australia.
I have John Pictons parents as Joseph Picton and Mary Jones.
I'm not sure how accurate this is.
Does anyone know what Picton families these Pictons may be connected to in the UK ?
If anyone is interested in these Pictons, please contact me, and I can invite you as a guest of my private tree on Ancestry.com.
phil.ash@bigpond.com

Nephi was my great grandfather. He died when I was 8 years old, but I do remember visiting him with my parents. I know that he was married more than once, but I don't even remember my step great grandmother's name. My grandfather was Eldred. He had 1 son and 2 daughters. One of his daughters accumulated quite a bit of genealogy information before she died, but I have never seen any of it. As far as I know my cousin now has all of that information. If you wish I could call him to see if it would be ok for you to contact him.

Phil Picton
plpicton@comcast.net

I have just submitted my family tree which includes info on my ancestor Pictons from Pembrokeshire, Wales. Dates back to 1751 with some ancient history on early Pictons back to 1270. DNA project shows it is likely that all Picton branches in Wales go back to a common ancestor Jenkin Picton of Newport, Wales 1340 according to info from Brian Picton Swann.

Hi Brian,
My name is James Picton, originally from Newport (Wales) and now living in Queensland, Australia.

My family (father Ken, wife Stella Rae) emmigrated to Australia in 1980 and I'm interested in tracing my Grandad (now deceased) Harry Lloyd Picton who I can't seem to dig up much info on.

Most of the male members of the family seem to have a very distinctive nose (which we cop untold amounts of grief about!) very reminiscent of old lithographs of Sir T.P. which I've collected over the years. Having read several books on his life I am aware that he left no 'Picton' descendents, but was interested to see if there was a connection to one of his sisters?

Any help would be warmly appreciated.

Kind regards,
James
Website: www.artofjimbo.com
email: info 'at' artofjimbo.com
Hi, we are searching for information on Gladys Picton. She was born 1936 in Portsmouth to mother Queenie Picton nee Mills and father Valentine Picton. Valentine was my grandfather, he and Queenie were divorced and he remarried my grandmother and had six children, one of which is my mother. We would like to know more about Gladys Picton, my mothers half sister. Her mother remarried to an Edwin Pervin in 1947 so Gladys' name may have changed to Gladys Pervin.

Ken, I haven't been on this board for a few years, but I found Job and Elizabeth Picton on an 1880 census. I will check to see if there is any Sterns on there. Thanks for that info, I think it would be possible with that death date to write the state offices in Pennsylvania for a death certificate. That would fix death dates plus give info on their mother and father, etc.

I'm amazed! I've been talking to Alan today who contacted me about Pictons in Haydock through Genes re-united, and then I found you! He's a Picton through John, John and Emily: my Great grandma was Mary Ann Picton (b 1880) who married Thomas Harrison from Haydock:her parents were John Picton and Ann Smith, both born about 1860. I think his father was William Picton, who I remember my gran telling me was known as Billy Fox, because he was sly(or crafty!!!) Any use?
Also-my husband's grandparents lived at 34 Vicarage Road-or Judfield Brow as it was. He was John Wlibraham who died in 1917 near Ypres. He's our main interest. Any info from 32 Vicarage Road????
Glynis

I live in Norh Wales, and my e-mail address is pinodavina@yahoo.co.uk
What is it about Davina McCall?
Most of my research I have got from the the 1901 to 1841 Censis. It is interesting that the name Picton counld have a French connection, as my Husband is Italian. It isn't so easy to search the Italian side, as I haven't fount an Italian Censis.
What is it about DNA?
Dear Davina

Have you tried to track down any references relating to the ancestors of Sir James Allanson Picton? He founded the Picton library in Liverpool. I am pretty sure this was how I found a pedigree going back to about 1622 from the Cheshire/Lancashire border - where there is a village of this name. I would be reasonably confident it was his family that this date and place sticks with me.

The Pic(k)ton families in those two Counties were always too thick on the ground for me to chase them seriously. Now I understand that you are back in 1799 the sources are obvious. Assume you have chased wills/admons. for these two counties?

Dear Brian,
Thank you very much for such a quick reply. I apologise for the error in the dates. My grandfather was Arthur James Picton, born in Warrington in 1869. His father was William Pickton, born in Latchford, in 1843. His father was Thomas Pickton, born in Latchford, in 1799. I believe there is a connection between the family and a brewery in Warrington. As my mother was 45 when I was born, and I am now 62, so my mother is no longer with us, I have nobody to ask. Hope this is of some help to you.
Best wishes,
Davina.

Hi Again

I have just re-read your posting - and oviously the dates you cite for your prents, grandparents, etc. cannot be correct, some wrong number keys hit, or something.

Just recheck the dates - make certain they are correct - add as much detail as to the sources of the dates - especially the earliest ones - and then we can talk by email.

Brian

PICTONS IN WARRINGTON

Hi Davina

Are you based in the UK? If so, then you will have heard of Davina McCall - if not, then you won't know what I'm talking about.

I hate to say this - but normally you would get short shrift from me and I would say the Pictons from Warrington are different families from my interests in Wales, and I cannot help you. Which, basically, is true. However . . .

The whole of the UK Census returns have gone online now. 1841 went this weekend from Ancestry.com. I can search them from 1901 to 1841 and email you the pages relevant to your ancestors. There is a village/hamlet in Cheshire called Picton - which I suspect is the origin of the surname there. I have seen a tree tracing families there back to 1622 - don't ask me for it.

I have also begun a DNA project on the Welsh Pictons - and it is not beyond the bounds of pssibility - way back (pre 1300) the families may connect - as Picton could be a French name in origin. And where did the name of the village in Cheshire come from? DNA may have the potential to answer these types of Question.

So I cannot help you immediately - but if you are prepared to take a slightly longer view of your problems/interests, send me an email and we will talk that way. Let me know the skeleton details of how far you have got - usual stuff.

Look forward to hearing from you

Brian Picton Swann

Dear Brian,
I have recently started researching into my family ancestors, who are the Pickton's (Picton). My mother was 45 when I was born, and since died, but i remember her saying that our family had a connection with "Picton Hall" in Liverpool.
My grandfather was Arthur James Picton, born in Warrington in 1969. His father was William Pickton, born in Latchford, Warrington, in 1843. His father was Thomas Pickton, born in Latchford, in 1973.
I would be very greatful if you have any information about the Pickton's and Picton Hall. Looking forward to hearing from you
Best wishes,
Davina (Zanni).

Sharon,

Sorry about the other posts I hit the wrong key and it posted twice.

About the name Malisey, I do not know where the name originated. My great-grandmother, Melissa Collins Isbell Picton was listed as Malisey or Malissa on all census records; Malisey on her marriage record to my great-grandfather Albert Isbell; and as Melissa in her obituary and on her headstone. Malisey is probably a nickname for Melissa. It is also possible that when she gave her name, whoever recorded it did not know how to spell Melissa and wrote the name as it sounded to them. That occured frequently in old records. Are you related to this family? Sorry I can't be more help.

Lynnda

Dear Barbara,
I have just come accross your message board, amd realised that we must be related. My grandfather was Arthur James Picton born in 1869, who was married to Elizabeth Hughes. A sister Sarah J Picton was born in 1871. A brother John Piction was born in 1874, who was married to Ellen Bond. Another brother Joseph Piction born in 1875 and was married to Sarah who was born in 1877, and came from Colwyn Bay, who I believe were your grandparents. They lived in Blaenau Ffestinion, and he was a Fishmonger. They had a daughter Anne B Piction. Another brother was Fred C. Piction born in 1881. Their father was William, who died before the 1881 census, and Sarah (32 years of age in 1881) was born in Birmingham and was a dressmaker. Arthur James, Joseph and Fred C. were born in Warrington, Lancashire. Sarah J. and John were born in Bolton, Lancashire. They lived at 19, Howard Street, Warrington, Lancashire.
I would be very greatful if you could give me more information about Joseph, and his family, also dates of Birth, Marriage, and Death.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best Wishes,

Davina (Zanni).

It looks like your grandfather Arthur and my great grandfather Joseph were brothers.

I'll the compile details of Josephs family for you but essentiallly it looks like Joseph moved from the slate mining community of BF to the more prosperous coal mining of the south wales valleys where most of the family live today

My email address is ipicton@aol.com

Thanks again

Ian Picton

Dear Josie

I recognise all those names - at least back to the Thomas Picton born about 1773. I would be happy to exchange information - especially if you have evidence for a descent before this, as you claim.

Brian Picton Swann

Picton Research News

I am trying to contact Jeanette Martin Froeschner of Livermore California who has researched the Pictons in Ramoth Chapel Pembs. I know that she has contributed to the Picton Research News and attempts at contacting her from an address of 1998 are proving unfruitful. If anyone knows of her or the Picton Research news please could they contact me. Thank you.

I already managed to track down Jeanette thanks, and if you want to e-mail me with your e-mail address I'll pass it on to her. Our branch of the Pictons are from Cwmfelinmynach in Pembs.
Catrin
