Yes, there are Pylants all around me but most are dead. I plan this week to go cemetery shopping and photo as many graves and Pylant family members as possible. My cousin has research the Floyds and have them back to the 1600's if you are interested. Your ggrandfather was the brother to my great grandmother Margaret Pylant. Let's see...I believe that would make us cousins. I keep asking and hoping to find a Pylant groups that has yearly family reunions to no avail. Pls keep in touch and thanks for sharing.

What I have is probably the result of a misread document, but it states that Margaret Jeanette Floyd is the daughter of...."William Floyd and Stokes". I bet that should probably mean "Ann Stokes" but one is not supposed to assume when doing geneology. But it does sound logical. Margaret Floyd was born 01 August 1830 in Ga. and died 30 January 1899 in Choctaw County. That's all I have. Hope it helps. I live on Lake St. John between Ferriday, La. and Waterproof La. You live right in the middle of where so many of the Pylates were born and buried. I'm stuck right now as how to put all this info onto some type of understandable graph, or tree if you may.
I am the gg grand-daughter of Samuel Pilot,(grand-daughter of George Wesley Pylate and daughter of Billy (nmn) Pylate that is a son of George Wesley Pylate. No one seems to know anything of Samuel Pilots parents or sibling(s?)I do know that before my father died, he told me that our family came from the Netherlands originally. I just wish I had asked more questions at the time but being a teenager I did not have the resources or inclination to delve into the subject more or ask more questions. I am at this time trying to research and find out more but as you have, I have come to a brick wall. i will contact you should I find out more.

Re: Pilot surname

The Pilot surname descends from Huguenot French in the Medieval times. The Huguenots regularly put on Passion Plays about the life of Christ. As people were adopting or given surnames according to their trades (e.g. blacksmiths became Smith, Barrel makers became Cooper, etc) many of the Huguenots adopted the names of Characters they would regularly portray in the Passion Plays. Hence those who portrayed Pontius Pilate with regularity or noteworthy performances adopted this as a surname with some corruption of the spelling going on as not many people were literate(there are still Pilates, Pilats, Pillots and Pilotts.) Some Huguenots moved over to the UK settling firstly in London and then spreading to Bristol and the north. I would guess that some of these Pilots emigrated to the States at some point.

My father is Roy Pilot, son of Pierce Pilot. Pierce had 3 sons in order Eugene, Roy, and Rodney who are twins. Cleveland and Pierce as well as Eugene had electric motor businesses in Central New Jersey both of whom passed away when I was in my late teen years. I have a picture of Benjamin, Lucy, and some of their children in my home. Eugene went by Gene and only Pierce (my grandfather) called him Sonny. Eugene Raymond Pilot Sr. died two years ago in a plane crash. Roy and Rodney are still living and working with the family business now owned by Eugene Jr. in Neptune NJ.

Since my last posting, I found Ellen on the 1800 US Census in Marcellus County, Onondaga, New York. She was listed as 2 mos, born in KS. She was lving with the Richard and Susan E. May household. Listed with her was a brother, Samuel H. Pilot aged 10, born in NY. I also found her father on the same census living in the John and Martha Evans household and listed as a SonL. Lottie Pilot aged 6 born in KS, living there also, was a GDau. I am now at a standstill, not knowing her mother's name.

They had five children: Wanda (Pilot) Reeve, Florence (Pilot) Kresse, Eugene Pilat (his name was misspelled on the birth certificate and he left it that way), Olive (Pilot) Keller and Roland Valentine Joseph Pilot.

Hello Patricia,
Wish I could help you. My great great grandfather was Samuel Pilot born 1818 in SC per census data. He m. Margaret Jeanette Floyd in 1846 in Barbour Co., AL. He had a number of children with 3 boys changing their name to Pylate in the late 1800s. He had only one son that kept the Pilot name, Walter Raleigh Pilot b. abt 1870 and d. in AL. Possibly Walter is your connection.
There were a number of Pilot men out of Canada and Pilot families that came to the U.S. in the late 1800s. Also Pilot is one of those 'occupation' names that were given to men who were pilots of boats or were called 'pilot' if they were scouts for early travelers etc. Complicates things tremendously.
We have been unable to find Samuel's parents or siblings. He died in Choctaw Co., AL in abt 1884 (I have all these dates, just not right in front of me.)
Find out James' father and grandfather's name and their birth and death dates, if you can. Also get an idea what part of the US the father and grandfather are from. I do have or can get Walter Raliegh Pilot children's names. James and I might be umpteenth cousins!!
Betsy Pylate Simpson
