Hi John,

I am researching the Pinkney family in Suffolk. I have Eric Pinkney b1921, Beryl Pinkney b 1923, Gerald Pinkney b1926 and Roy Pinkney b1928 all in Ispwich.

Mother is Winifred Anna Bailey and I am told father's name is Charles Joseph Pinkney. Do you have confirmation of this? I am unable to find further information on birth or census records.

Many thanks

Nice to know that someone else is on the case!! I also had info from someone that a John Pinkney 1763-1837 was married first to a Mary Simpson and then in 1812 to Jane Atkinson and the children were baptised at St Oswalds RC Croxdale. Then more info that John P of East Butsfield married Jane Mackertney on 21 Sep 1817 in the presence of Jim Wheatley and Geo Walton with the baptism on 31 Oct `1817 of daughter Jane.
Also have in the 1841 census Robert b 1826 Durham, agricultural labourer and lodger with Margaret Dickinson at Old Park Auckland. There happens to be a John P, agric labourer b 1800 Durham and Ann b 1801, but not in Durham, with children Mary b 1827 and Joh b 1834 at Redworth, Heighington (which is apparanctly only 3 miles apart.
So much info - and so confusing

Ooops I see someone has my Jane as dying in 1830 so she wouldnt be Peter's mother in 1841!

However on another board there is someone who owns Peter Pinkney and believes his parents to be Jane McKertney and John Pinkney so these may be your ancestors. The John may well still be my man (surely there cant have been too many John Pinkneys in Tudhoe at around that time???!) and we havent picked up on a third marriage.

I cannot be certain but I am wondering whether he may have been the son of my 4gt grandfather John Pinkney and his second wife, Jane Atkinson. I think Jane was the Jane mentioned in the 1841 census as living with her son Keter (actually Peter) in Whitworth. Subsequent census entries for Peter indicate that he was born in Tudhoe - my John died in Tudhoe in about 1835. If your Robert's father, John was alive in 1850 then obviously this isnt him but it is a hypothesis that bears thinking about.

I have an ancestor named John Pinkney Dumas born 1840 in Choctaw County, Mississippi and died after the Civil War, in which he served. I have always wondered where that Pinkney name came from.

There was one other family member with Pinkney as a middle name: James Pinkney Dumas born September 12, 1820 in Greenville District, South Carolina (John's uncle) - I have lots on him, except the origin of that name.

His father was Elhannon Winchester Dumas born 1779 in Richmond County, North Carolina.

His father was Benjamin Dumas, Jr. born 1729 in Louisa County, Virginia.

Hope someone has an idea...

Thanks, lindajcox3@hotmail.com

Please give specific information on where in LA James Pinkney lived. My line is Hopson Pinckney of Charleston SC. His daughter Mary Elizabeth married Samuel Ashe and second Daniel Cannon Edwards. Mary Elizabeth received many slaves from her parents. After the death of her 2nd husband she left SC for MS then TX where she died. Her sons moved to LA after about 1855 and lived in St Landry Parrish. They had some of the slaves in LA. It is possible that the original Pinckney slaves could have taken the name Pinckney rather than Edwards or Ashe.

Does anyone have any info on freedpersons by the name of Jas Pinckney or pinkney? Having problems trying to find list's of freedpersons. He would have been 10 or 11 when this happend.

yes actually its a very prominent name since the signing of the declaration of independence. Two men who signed it are Pinckney's, from England. Of course they were also slave owners, and their slaves were givin this name as well, but there are other records that come from africa and the carribean islands that they were just givin the name. Some have dropped the c or have changed the spelling after 1850.

Did you find anything out about the connection? My g-great grandfather's name was Pinkney Wilson. He was born in the 1850's in Arkansas and lived most of his life in and around Lamar County, Texas. His father went by the initials J A C Wilson, and we believe his first name was John. He had two children, Edgar and Henry. He married a woman named Valena Deford. I really don't know much more than that and also wondered what the connection was and if anyone knew anything else.

Linda

Pinkney Park in Rowayton, CT was the home of my paternal grandparents. However it came to the Pinkney family through my paternal's grandfather's mother, who was a Dibble. The 3 families connected with the house are Dibble, Seeley & Pinkney. The Pinkneys are descended from William Pinkney of Annapolis, Maryland - The Honorable Wm Pinkney having served as a US Congressman, US Senator, Minister to England, Minister to Russia, Attorney General to President James Madison, also I believe he held other political positions.

I do not recall which part of the UK that the Honorable Wm. Pinkney's father came from in the 1700's to Maryland. I am not familiar with the first name of Hobart in my family tree.

Kris Pinkney

Rowayton is part of Norwalk, CT so you may want to visit www.norwalkhistoricalsociety.org.
The society may be able to help you.
New DNA Results are in!

You can view the new DNA results here: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/binkley/ (Click on Y Results).

In group 1, kit 71739 has upgraded to 37 markers with results due any day now. In group 2, kit 78682 has upgraded to 37 with results due in 6-8 weeks. I have not asked the 3rd group, John Binkley of NC to upgrade to 37, as there is no reason to do so, until they start getting matches.

Two new kits are coming due. Both believe that they do not match the Swiss Binkleys. One kit will start having results trickle in late this week or early next week and the other kit will be back in 6-8 weeks.

Group 1 is getting a little closer to splitting apart, but will still need more DNA participants in order for me to do this.

If you are interested in DNA and how it can help you, feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Cheri Mello
Binkley/Pinkley DNA Admin.

Hello Members,

My name is Cheri Mello and I took over the Binkley/Pinkley DNA study with FamilyTree DNA. I've been involved in various DNA studies for the past 2.5 years. I'm a co-administrator of one study, sole administrator of two others, and am part of a DNA committee at my local genealogy society. I chose FamilyTreeDNA as the testing company as I like the tools they provide the administrators (me) to help manage the project (your DNA results).

You can find out more information here (how to join, cost, etc):
https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=D26491&...;...
(You can also access it from the main page at: www.ftdna.com and type in Pinkney, Binkley or Pinkley or any other allied surname in the search box).

Also, FamilyTree DNA has started their Holiday sale early. The Y-DNA 37 marker test is $30 off and the Y-DNA 25 marker is $15 off. You must order via the invoice method by Dec. 31st.

Email me with any questions. PINKNEY, b. 12/ /1871 in Balto., Md., d. ?
Known children - 0

(The 1903 City Directory Lists a Samuel Pinkney as residing at 804 McDonough St)

Family oral history States that Louis Pinkney was born in Carroll County in 1830 and was the slave of a man named Pinkney White. Louis Pinkney had three sisters, Mary Pinkney who married a man named ? James, Dollie Pinkney who married a Dr. Reid and a sister who married a Silas Caution. Also stated was that a family member drove a produce wagon which had a false bottom and carried runaway slaves to Pennsylvania. Other information states that there was a relative named Eugene Pinkney who lived in Annapolis, Maryland.

The earliest official records found of any family member is the 1850 census, which lists Lewis Pinkney as a 23 year old waiter at a hotel (Ward 6, page 397).

A copy of Louis Pinkney's death certificate reveals the following information:

Date of death--------------February 14, 1900	Full name of deceased----Louis F. (A term
descriptive of a patient's condition and of no help in making a diagnosis)

Comments
1. Louis Pinkney's death certificate did not reveal his parents names or the name of the
informant.

2. Carroll County did not exist when Louis Pinkney was born (1830). Carroll County was
formed in 1832
from parts of Frederick and Baltimore Counties. Louis Pinkney was probably born in
Baltimore County.

3. Louis Pinkney was the Slave of a Man named Pinkney White. William Pinkney's
daughter Isabella, Pinkney married a Man named Joseph White and had a son named
William Pinkney White. This is probably the Pinkney White who owned Louis
Pinkney.

4. Louis Pinkney worked for George S. Brown (Alex Brown & Sons.), a banker and
slaver.

5. The 1860 census list Louis Pinkney's as a farm laborer working for the Whitridge
Family.

6. Louis Pinkney married Sarah J. Hopkins, daughter of Charles Hopkins and a Cherokee
Indian named Julia (surname unknown).

7. The 1858 City Directory lists a Francis Pinkney as residing at 18 Lerew Al. with
Hannah Caution, (possibly Louis and Hannah's father?)

8. The 1903 city directory lists a Samuel Pinkney who resided at 804 McDonough St?

The 1850 census list's the following Pinkney:

Baltimore county, 1st District, Page 296
Name Age
Pinkney , Hammond 34
“ , Maria 26
"	, Ureth 10
" , Cha ? 7
"	, Eugean 1

Lewis Pinkney's family is as follows:

Father - ?
Dear Beverly- Thank you for the info. The reason why I have been searching for info regarding Townsend and Josephine is that we have a very dear friend who is the daughter of Algernon Brown from his second marriage. Evelyn is in her 80's and lives in Florida now but grew up in Scarsdale, NY. She distinctly remembers Townsend and Josephine. In fact, when Josephine died, she inherited many things from her estate.

Evelyn never quite knew the relationship between her father and Townsend. Algernon died of a heart attack after riding in a hunt in new Jersey when she was in her teens, so much has remained a mystery for her. And she had no idea her father had been married to Josephine until I found it in the Census records.

In any case, our friend would love to have the chance to speak to you to see if there was anything else she could find out. She does not know how to use a computer, so I have done all the searching for her. Is there a way she could get in touch with you?

Thank you, Susan Mahoney

Townsend Pinkney and Algernon W. Brown were business associates. Pinkney was born in NYC, and Brown in Brownsville, PA.

I have in my possession the marriage record of Townsend and Josephine Pinkney. They were married on March 6 1936 at the Municipal Building in Manhattan, NY. Townsend was living at 716 Madison Avenue, and Josephine at 315 East 57th Street. He was 55, and she was 36, a divorcee. Josephine was the daughter of Frank and Helen (West) Tibbits. She was the former Mrs. Algernon W. Brown. Interestingly, this Algernon signed his name as a witness to the marriage.

Townsend was very close to his brother, Cornelius Sidell Pinkney. Cornelius was married to and divorced from Sophia Piel. She was the daughter of Gottfried Piel of the famous Piel’s Brewing Company.

I will be glad to share a copy of the marriage records if you contact me directly.

Regards,

Beverly G. Kirby-McDonough.
Re: TOWNSEND PINKNEY AND JOSEPHINE

I am looking for more information on Townsend Pinkney and Josephine C. Brown Pinkney.

Josephine was married to Algernon W. Brown according to the 1920 Census. At the time, he was 25 years and she was 27. They then divorced. According to the 1930 Census, Algernon had remarried and had 2 children.

Townsend was a member of the Saint Nicholas Society of the City of New York.

Algernon and Townsend apparently had a friendship or business relationship. The Census shows that they were both "brokers." According to a friend of mine (now in her 80's), she remembers him- but also remembers Josephine. She has asked me to look into this to see what the connection might have beenbetween these people.

Josephine never remarried. The NY Times showed she lived at 35 East 38th Street.

We plan to visit Valhalla in the near future to see the monument for ourselves.

If you have any information, I would appreciate learning more. Thank you.

Pinckney's passing for WHITE in SC

My father told me his grandfather came from Hilton Head area, I assume Pinckney Island. He stated his grandfather Talmage Pinkney and his brothers were children of their slave owner. The two brother left the area maybe not SC after the civil war and PASSED for white and my gggrandfather went to Maryland. Although he could have passed he chose not to and stated he would take the "C" out of PINKNEY so they could know his family. Has anyone heard of any stories of that? This is truly a sad story, but one never knows what it's like for suvival.

any info would be appreciated.

Tanya
