Pitman grouping in Orange Texas

I have a family grouping of Linscombs in 1870 Orange county TX census that I think might actually be Pitmans. They are William born 1852 in LA, Samuel born 1856 in LA, Sarah born 1858 in Texas, Theodore born 1860 in Texas, and Julia born 1866 in Texas. Next door are the adults A. Linscomb and Nancy Linscomb who I think are actually Austin Fork and Nancy Ella Smith Pitman Fork. Austin married Nancy on 29 Jun 1870. The census was taken 2 Aug 1870. This might just be stretching it a bit but if this grouping fits a missing piece of your Pitman family, please let me know. Austin Fork was the brother in law of Sophie Linscomb Fork/Farque. Other Linscomb researchers cannot ID this family. The Sarah might be Sarah Elizabeth Pitman who married Christopher Columbus Murphy in Orange in 1874.

Hello Marty
I believe your Rebecca Pittman is the daughter of William Pittman b. between 1770-1780 of Cambria Co. PA. I found William because I think he is my G-g-g grandfather. He can be found in these censuses: Summerhill Twp. Cambria Co., PA in 1830 but written as William Petman. He was listed as being 40-50, 1 son 0-5, 1 son 5-10, 1 son 20-30, 1 daughter 10-15. His wife was 40-50.
He was next found in Washington Twp. Cambria Co. PA in 1840. He is listed as being 60-70 years old has a wife 60-70 years old and has 2 male children at home that are 15-20 years old.
I think William and his wife probably died before the 1850 census.

William and his wife (unknown)had at least 6 children:
1)Benjamin 1800-1877 m. Elizabeth Smyers
2)Rebecca Pittman abt 1807 m. Philip D. George
3)Elias Pittman b. between 1810-1820
4)daughter Pittman b. between 1815-1820
5)John Pittman b.abt 1820 m. Hannah b. abt 1825
6)Jacob Pittman b. abt 1825 m. Margaret

Many of these children can be found living in these townships with their families in the censuses. Let me know if you can't find them.

My line is from William's son Benjamin. I had been looking for Benjamin's father for years and after looking at one of his daughter's obits, I found out he was living close to this William in Cambria Co.at that time. They were the only Pittman family in all of Cambria Co. at that time. Benjamin also named his first child William. This is great evidence that William is his father but I need official documentation to completely proove it. Benjamin Pittman and wife Elizabeth Smyers moved to Green Twp. Indiana Co. somewhere in the early 1840's. I can send you his tree if you want it.

If anyone knows who this William is or what his wife's name was I would love to find out!!! I think they came from NJ and England before that. My Pittman father had a DNA test which traces this line to Southern England! R1b1b2

I would love to trade any info on these families.
Thanks, Vicky Pittman Courte of Orlando

Thanks for replying. Sorry taking so long to thank you. I got a bit mixed up how to reply. Many Pitman's with one "t" could be related but it would be a long journey to find out. Better leave it alone. Have located John Pitman's gravestone and know it is my husband's ancestor. Thank you again.

They are related to Solomon (a brother of hers perhaps, but I am not sure). You may have a look at my tree to see if it helps.

Searching for information on Moses Pittman (? > IN > IA > KS > OK) - specifically the names of his parents. Moses is consistent in saying he's born 1819-20 in Kentucky on censuses. Was married to Mary J. Hutton in 1843 in Parke County, Indiana. Moved then to Iowa, then to Kansas in the 1850s, where he spent 35 years of his life. Then moved to Oklahoma in the 1890s during the land rush there. Died in Canadian County, Okla. in 1900.

He supposedly had a brother living in Whiteside Co., Illinois in 1910. I don't know a name or if it's true. Possibilities for this brother in the 1910 census say they're born in Pennsylvania, and there appear to be online trees for them, without a Moses of the correct age. I know that doesn't mean he doesn't belong with these families, I'm just trying to figure out where he *does* belong, and get some solid proof of that.

His children are: Rebecca, Mary J., Esther, Robert, Sarah and Ambie. All but Robert and Sarah stayed in Kansas.

Hi- Elizabeth Ballew Pitman was my ggg grandmother. Here is what I have found so far. On my tree I also have a photo of one of their daughters, Nancy Ann Pitman Blackwell. But if anyone else can elaborate feel free to contact me as I am trying to find more information (especially any Cherokee connection) on this "branch" of my tree. Thanks!

"Millie Linder, a descendant of John Joshua and Elizabeth Ballew Pitman, recounts a legend in her family that Elizabeth was a full-blooded Cherokee. According to this legend, "John Joshua was riding a horse in the Glassy Mountain area and came upon a young indian girl fishing and married her. She was only ten years of age and had her first child at the age of twelve." This would appear, however, to be only legend as Elizabeth's parents are known and have no connection to the Cherokee."

gaolschkiadded this on 10 Feb 2007
I ran across your message while researching John Boykin. I am trying to determine whether "my" John Boykin was the SON of Sarah Pitman and John Boykin.
My John Boykin was born Isle of Wight, Va around 1775 and died in Mississippi in 1836. Moved to MS around 1820. Married to a Catherine but don't know if this was the mother of his 5 children, listed as:
Nancy Boykin Harrison b - 1810; married William Harrison
William H Boykin b - 1811
John Pittman Boykin b - 1813; d - 1850 in MS
Drury D Boykin b - around 1818; d - 1864 in Alabama; married Cornelia D Currie in NC in 1849
Simon David Boykin b - 1820; d - 1854 in MS; married Frances (Fannie) Bradley in MS in 1841
All children were born in Southampton, Va
Does any of this sound familiar? Do you know if Sarah and John had a son named John Boykin? Do you know when Sarah died?
At this point I am down to "process of elimination" - pretty much hitting a brick wall. If you have any further info, please contact me - either here or by email address: rh9593@windstream.net Thanks, Pam Hensley

I'm looking for any info on Britton Pitman. He was born either in Edgecombe County or Robeson roughly between 1775 and 1780, and lived most of his life in Robeson. He married Ruthy Lucas in 1815 and was on the muster rolls for war of 1812.

I know that he got the deed to land in Robeson County from Thomas Pitman, but I don't know if that's his father.

In 1838, he gave the deed to that land to Nicholas, Timothy, and Levi Pittman. Levi sold his share, and Nicholas sold the other two shares. Timothy and Levi both died in 1850 from typhus. Don't know if they're brothers, sons of Britton, or what.

Anyone have anything on any of these guys?

Joy

I have Thomas Morgan Pitman marrying Gillie (I've seen this spelled multiple ways) Clifton. Not sure where I got her last name. Sorry I can't be of more help...hope you're still out there and need the information!

I have this information firsthand from Dewey and also from Amanda Martin who was Henry Franklin Martin's wife and Dewey's adopted mother.

Your Pittman decendants are well documented. Please let me know if you need a hand elsewhere. Are you a decendant of William Burl Pitman or Urel Pitman. I can't seem to find a Selmer by Connie.

Re: Anyone familar??

I am not aware at this time who might be Lewis Andrew Pitman’s parents. As Don G. commented, we thought possibly William “Longhunter” Pitman/ Sally Webb might be his parents or his grandparents because in the period of 1802 - 1816, Lewis Pitman lived in the vicinities of some of the family members of William Pitman and his brother Thomas Pitman.

However, no documentation connecting Lewis to these two families has been found and now Y-DNA testing has proved the two family lines are not related, even in the long ago past. DNA test results for Lewis Pitman and for the family lines of William “Longhunter” Pitman and also of Thomas Pitman are shown on the webpage of the Pitman/Pittman DNA Project.

Results on the Pitman Project webpage and search results within the Family Tree DNA Company’s database give some “Pitman” matches to Lewis at the 12 marker level but when markers through the 25 and 37 marker levels are compared, the matches prove to not be close enough in time to, as yet, prove helpful.

Research by a professional Genealogist in Kentucky some years ago and additional research on our own has resulted in some intriguing questions and possible results. It MAY be that Lewis Pitman, Priscilla Pitman/ Peter Brunt, Rachel Pitman/John Compton and Polly Pitman/Jonathan Manley, Jr. are connected someway. Polly Pitman Manley is proved as a daughter of Priscilla Pitman Brunt by the marriage record of Polly Pitman to Jonathan Manley, Jr. in Warren county KY.

30 Jul 1795, Mercer Co. KY, Peter Brunt married Priscilla Pitman.
1800, Peter Brunt is in a tax list in Washington co. KY which is adjacent to Mercer co.
18 May 1801, Washington co KY, John Compton married Rachel Pitman
25 Dec 1802, Mercer co KY, Lewis Pitman marred Nancy Johnston
1804, Lewis Pitman is on a Mercer co. tax list.

1 Apr 1805, Warren Co. KY, marriage bond for Jonathan Manley, Jr. and Polly Pitman. Consent is given by Peter Brunt, step father of Polly. We have been unable to identify Priscilla Pitman’s maiden name or her Pitman husband’s given name
28 Sep 1807, Warren co KY, Lewis Pitman buys land.
14 Nov, 1807, Warren Co. KY, LEWIS PITMAN, JOHN COMPTON, and PETER BRUNT all are witnesses on a land deed.
2 Dec 1809, Warren Co KY, Lewis and Nancy Pitman sell the land purchased in 1807.

1810 Census, Lewis Pitman is living in Butler co KY while Peter Brunt, John Compton and Jonathan Manley, Jr. are listed in the 1810 Warren county census living near each other.

1816/17, Lewis Pitman moves from Butler Co. KY to Orange county Indiana and 1829 he moves to Macoupin co. Illinois.
The Manleys move to Greene co. Illinois and Peter Brunt and the Comptons stay in the Warren and Barren cos. area of KY.
I'm doing Thomas genealogy for my cousin.

I have that Robert Pitman and Katherine Smallwood had
Haywood (may be Robert Haywood) he had
Susannah Pitman who was the mother of
Isabelle Pittman (unknown father). Susannah a few years later married Francis Tinkler.
Isabelle married John H. Thomas. And I have that info pretty well down to the present although I'm still documenting some of it.

If we can be of help to each other email me. Thanks,

Wyatt Pitman b. 1828 AL

I'm helping my stepmom learn about her Pitman family. I've traced them back to Pontotoc Co. MS in 1860:

Wyatt Pitman 32 AL
Mary M. 33 AL
William 7 MS
Zachariah? 4 MS (died young?)
Henry 3 MS
Frances 1 MS (Frank)

Mary's maiden name may be Morris. Wyatt's first name may have been Robert or Willliam.

Wyatt was in the Pontotoc Co. Militia in 1863. By 1870, the family had moved to Shelby Co. TN:

Mary Pittman 45 AL
Wyat 45 AL
Wm 16 MS
Henry 13 MS
Frank 12 MS
Jack 8 MS
Rob 5 MS
Cassie 3 MS (Caswell)
Virginia 6/12 TN

Something happened to Wyatt and Mary after 1870. By 1880, their children are found in the homes of neighbors. Perhaps Wyatt and Mary died in the yellow fever epidemic.

Is this family familiar to anyone? Does anyone know who Wyatt's parents were?

Thanks!

Vanessa H.
