hi,
am starting to look at the Pitt family tree. in particular, Isaac Pitt (born 1781?) , father of Stephen and Eliza Jeffreys.

Stephen and Eliza had a son Isaac 26.8.1838 who married Elizabeth Outten.

their third child William (who married Ellen Swanborough ) was my maternal grandmother.

my mother, Myrtle Doris Outten Wilschefski (nee Pitt) was the youngest of William and Ellen. my mother, Myrtle died on 56.5.2012, aged 103.

I just submitted a topic of this very problem.

I have heard that James Charles Pitt (1760-!780) the third son, lived in Canon Frome, Herefordshire, England, and had at least one daughter named Elizabeth. But then the name would not continue. My family goes back to an Elizabeth Pitt (1811-1892) in Canon Frome who is the daughter of a Elizabeth and James Pitt but I cannot carry it back any further from there.
There might be a generation in between but then James Charles might have had a son named James. James Charles Pitt would have been a little young to have any amount of children but the right one could carry the name.

There is a lot of room for error given the hope to make the connection but I would not rule it out yet.

Good luck, let me know if you need references.
Michael
The Pitt name ...

I have Pitts in my family and I have been told that I am a descendant of Sir William Pitt the elder. But as I understand all of his male children did not have heirs to the name and the female children took on different names.

The only one I am unsure about is James Charles Pitt who died of Yellow Fever in Antigua (British Naval Base) at the age of twenty, but I also heard he had a daughter named Elizabeth, can anyone truly settle this uncertain question because I would like to know. And based on the volume of people named Pitt trying to figure out the same connection it must be important to all of them.

It may be that we all share an ancestor with his father or grandfather Thomas Diamond Pitt. I don't really now because I am stuck in the register of Canon Frome. If anybody has any idea what complicates this common perception please write further, I am all ears.

I am trying to find more information in regards to the Pitt family that used to live in Moss-Side Manchester around 1900. The furthest back i have is Henry Pitt who had 3 (known so far) children Enid, Gordon and Alfred. The reason it is unknown further is that Henry left the family when the children were young and he was not talked about by my grandfather for this reason. The last heard was that he possibly emmigrated to the USA.
Thanks
Jenny

Alexander Pitt

I am trying to find an elusive relative. Alexander Pitt from England married a woman named Ellen from England in the 1850's. They came to America and she was living in Galveston Texas. Her children were born in Texas (Caroline in 1860 and Nellie in 1867). In a letter dated 1857, Ellen visited England and mentioned Ramsgate and Paddington. I am guessing Alexander was born about 1820 and Ellen was born in 1827. Family lore claims he was related to the "Pitts" of England. I also assume that Alexander and Ellen were married in England about 1853, plus or minus 5. I think Alexander was a merchant and spent time traveling between the England and Texas. I also think he died about 1868. Any help would be appreciated.

Dick

That's quite all right, I just try to help those of my husband's lineage when I have adequate sources. There is a Pitts DNA website should you decide to get serious about researching. I hate those little green leaves myself for I have never found anything worth copying. I have a private website on ancestry and once I get all my sources placed I will make it public, but until I do, I'll just keep on posting until I get it done. Have a happy new year!
Lib Pitts
Kara,

That is the problem I have with those Ancestry.com commercials with those "little leaves"....they make genealogy seem so simple when in fact it is anything but.

You are not stepping on anyone's toes or offending anyone. It is all about sharing information. There is soooooo much incorrect data out on the internet, especially about our line. Yes, this is my line too. My direct line and that of Joel's line have the same DNA so we are cousins. This incorrect data just gets copied over and over and over.

If you are really interested in finding out about your ancestors contact me at nanmc@bellsouth.net. I can also get you in touch with other researchers of your direct line.

You might also visit our Pitts DNA Project at the following link. http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/pitts

I look forward to hearing from you.

Nancy

Christ folks....
Thanks for the info, but I never claimed to be an authority on anything here and honestly, we just spent a few days on Ancestry months ago just having fun and following those stupid little green leaves. Any and all information in question was all suggested via those little green leaves on Ancestry and was not a result of any knowledge we claimed to be an authority on. Maybe some peoples info should be verified as accurate before being allowed to be shared with other members or suggested as hints. As mentioned, we only spent a very small time on here a long time ago, and are not avid geneaologists and have not spent the hundreds of hours, money and Passion that many of you have. Perhaps we will in the future, but in the mean time we didn't mean to step on anyone's toes, offend anyone (how that would be possible, I don't know) or claim any info as accurate or truthful in any way shape or form. We're ignorant as to the origins of our Pitts line and were just looking for leads & info, but didn't really expect to be looked at as someone who was claiming something untruthful.

Again, thanks for the response and info posted.
Hi Kara,

I would be very interested to know where you are getting your information.

1st - the parents of Joel Pitts has not been proven. If you have any such documentation I would be very interested to know what you have.

2nd - your next three generations are
1. out of order
2. unproven
3. There is no evidence that there was any such
person named Caleb Pitts of this age. Some
researchers are showing a phantom Caleb as
born abt 1730 but there is no evidence he
existed.

3rd - There were several with the name of Charles. The Charles who moved to Pendleton Co may have been the son of Henry Pitts or the son of Charles Pitts, brothers in Newberry.

The Charles Pitts who married Mary Ann Standridge was born c1798 and was about the same age as Joel. Joel and Charles may or may not have been brothers. There is no proof either way. We do know that their descendants have the same DNA.

There was a Rebecca Pitts. Based on the 1850 census she was born 1759. She may or may not have been Rebecca Leathers. There is no evidence of a Caleb Pitts old enough to have been her husband. There is no record of any person in any of the census, church records, deeds or any other documentation in Pendleton Co of any person named Caleb with the exception of later generations. Furthermore, as far as I know the Leathers name for Rebecca is word of mouth. I found no evidence of a Rebecca Leathers in any of the Leathers research. Church and census records do associate this Rebecca Pitts with the family of Charles Pitts but does not identify the relationship.

I am unaware of any Charles Pitts married to a Mary Cheatham. I would be interested in your documentation on this.

There was a Charles Pitts and a Charles C Pitts Jr on a deed record. This is not proof that they were father and son. Sr and Jr did not mean father and son back then. There was a Charles Pitts who moved to Pendleton Co by 1790. Whether this was Charles, son of Henry b c1725, or Charles, son of Charles b before 1741(brother of Henry) cannot be determined with any accuracy. Charles b before 1741 died in Pendleton Co in 1807. His estate packet shows two sons, Caleb Pitts and Charles Pitts Jr as administrators of his estate. Taby, widow of Charles sold her portion of the estate to Caleb Pitts of Newberry. Charles Sr and Charles Jr sold land and mills in Newberry in 1805. Whether Charles Jr was living in Newberry in 1805 or if he had already moved to Pendleton by 1790 is unknown. All that I can say is that one of the Charles'moved to Pendleton and one remained in Newberry. All indications, based on will and estate records and deed records, are that one Charles was the son of Henry(b c1725) and one Charles was the son of Charles (b before 1741 some show b 1735). Which one actually moved to Pendleton and which one stayed in Newberry is unknown.

Last, There is no proof that the SC Pitts actually descend from the PITT family of Isle of Wight Co VA, although many researchers believe so. The fact is that there is no evidence that Col Robert Pitt and any of his wives ever had a son named Henry. Some researchers claim that Henry was the son of Robert Pitt's son John who was born 1634. Simple math shows that someone born in 1634 cannot father a son born in 1645.

Col Robert Pitt was the son of William Pitts, b bet 1575-1580, d 1624 Bristol England, and Mary Gibbs, b abt 1578, d June 2, 1634 in Bristol, England.

The will of Mary Gibbs Pitts, d 1634, names 3 of Robert's sons. Robert's will, proven in court 1674 clearly shows that there is no son named Henry in his will. The name of Col Robert Pitt's first wife is unknown. He obviously had 3 sons by this wife, two of which were deceased by the time Col Robert died. Only the son John is living at the time of the will. Henry Pitt, b 1645, died 1715 in Surry Co VA. He was alive and well when Col Robert Pitt died. There would be no reason to leave him out of the will. Furthermore, one has to PROVE that someone was "just left out of the will".
There is simply no evidence that Henry Pitt, b 1645 was the son of Col Robert Pitt.

I have searched all these wills and other documents that I have been able to find and I cannot find any connection whatsoever for our Henry Pitt, b 1645, back to Col Robert Pitt.

Hope this helps,
Nancy McClellan

The Will of Robert Pitt
Isle of Wight Co., VA, Will & Deed Book 2, p.128

(typed exactly as transcribed by John A Brayton)

In the Name of God Amen, I ROBERT PITT, Marchant, being sicke & Weake in body
but praised be God in / sound Memorie, doe ordaine this for my last Will & Testamt:
in manner & forme as followeth:
ffirst I Give & bequeath my soule to Gode my maker, Trustinge to find salvation &
redemption for my Soule, & life eternall / Through the Merritts of my Savior: & redeemer
Jesus Christ, Who died for me, And my Body to be buried att the discretion / of my
Executors.
Julian V Pitt lived in GA-died in AL 1920 on a visit

Pitt Line GA-states associated NC,VA,TN,AL

Searching For Pitt line from GA. Alonzo Leo Pitt Sr 1885-1946. He lived in Fulton County, GA. I am lost after him on verifying his father. His father I believe was Julian V Pitt, born in VA(I think around 1848, was a confederate Soldier for NC 32 Lenoir Braves and VA 38th(he was a Drummer I believe. He married Tempy Johnson (1858-1936). Their children were Alonzo Pitt, Edward Lester Pitt(1876-?)moved to FL, Julian V Pitt(1879-1937) I think he might have moved to AL. From a Pension document I saw Julian V. Pitt Sr. died in AL on a visit-he died Aug 11, 1920-Hale County, Alabama, buried at Mt. Herman Cemetery. Other chilren..Homer Byrd Pitt(1893-1919) Died in CO-buried in Fulton County GA-he was married to unknown wife-searching for them as well. Sidney Lawrence Pitt(1891-1919) buried in Fulton County GA, William T. Pitt(1881-1901) died from Brights Desease, Fulton County GA. Gloria V Pitt(1888-1959) married A.W. Moore, Malenia Pitt(1895-1919?). Julian and Tempy Pitt(were Cigar makers) I have found them in TN, in the late 1880's-oldest children possibly born there. I think Julian Pitt Sr joined the conferderate Army while living in NC in 1861. I have been unable to trace Julian V Pitt or confirm his family/parents to link him to PITT lines. PLEASE help if anyone has any info-I am thinking VA, GA, TN, AL, possibly CO are the main states of this line. Thanks

My name is Mike Mulligan and I dated Noreen Pitt in high school, at Grant HS located in Fox Lake, Illinois in 1970 and 1971. I lost track of her, but I know she married a Jim Gross in the 70's. I attended Ada's wedding with Noreen in Elgin, Illinois, (1971), where Ada lived and she married a jeweler(Larry?). I hope you have already connected with your family and they are all ok. If you need any more info you can call me 813-300-6071 or email me at mmulliga@tampabay.rr.com. I live in Tampa Florida now. I would love to hear from Noreen again. I hope good fortune has found them all. Good luck to you, and I wish you well.

Santo, your Pitt family seems to be different from mine. So far I have come across no known info of Charles Pitt ( 1794-1882) the immigrant who came to America with his family. I have seen one photo of him in his 60s and heavy set. While he did not inspire it, his visible features could have inspired the political cartoon character John Bull.

Tom, I think my Pitts descend from IOW, however, I have not been able to connect beyond Richard Pitt of Halifax County, NC in the early 1800's. Do you have anything connecting IOW Pitts to NC Pitts? I am sure they were from Virginia originally.
Hi there. I know this posting line may be dead, but I have to try. Has anyone found any further information on this line? I was following my hints, but hit a bad patch of false information. My line starts with my dad and follow down to see where I end, I typed it all out, and we end in Isle of Wight. I'm very frustrated and would love to know where I am going wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Lyle Pitts (my dad)
Bert Pitts married to Jessie Honeycutt
John Allen Pitts married to Nevada Barton
Melmith Pitts married Lucretia Porter
West Pitts married to Isabella Davis
Joel Pitts married to Charlotte
Charles Pitts married to Mary Cheatham
Caleb Pitts married to Rebecca Leathers
Charles Pitts married to Mary Ann Stanridge
Joseph Pitts married to Nancy Slaughter
Charles Pitts married to Sara Anne Hardy (Isle of Wight)
Henry Pitts married to Mary Galloway (Isle of Wight)

Unfortunately, I hit a wall at this point. There are sources on the internet that attach Henry to a Col Robert Pitt, who was supposedly the son of a British Prime Minister named William Pitt the Younger. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Pitt_the_Younger
I checked with the Encyclopedia on my bookshelf, as well as wikipedia and an online encyclopedia, and William Pitt the Younger didn't have any children. As I see that my family is from Isle of Wight, I am wondering if you connected with the same people, or if you have any information at all about where to go next.

I would sure appreciate any help you have.
Thank you,
Kara (Pitts) Shaw

I am also trying to make the connection. Unfortunately, my hints led me to a tree that dates Will the Younger, Will the Elder, and Thomas Pitt about 150-200 years off. I have been on people's websites trying to make the connection, finding a name of Col. Robert Pitt as being my connector; however, I think this information is false, as when I read historical accounts of William the Younger he has no children listed. I'm thinking a whole bunch of people got bad information from a few bad sources. Has anyone been able to find information on this lineage?

Has anyone ever gone further back than Gervase de la Puette? I am a Pitts by Melmith Pitts through to Caleb Martin Pitts then the Pitts' in Isle of Wight on to William Pitt the Younger and Thomas "Diamond" Pitt, then William Pitt and Helena Haviland. I followed this back to the Pyt/Pyte and de la Poole and Putte, but when I get to Gervase de la Puette, b. 1160, I can't go any further back. Has anyone ever gone further back?

Also, my father, Lyle Pitts, was not very interested in his family, so once I passed the age of 10 I never heard of anyone in the Pitts family again. I know I had an uncle Carl I never met, and I lost touch with the 2 siblings of his I did meet. I would love to connect with family. My email is kdsjds@gmail.com (ancestry tree is Shaw through my husband).
Thank you for any information you have available.
Kara (Pitts) Shaw

Hello Aileen,
For the past 10 years I have been tracing the Pitt family tree in South Africa and my earliest recorded ancestor was George Pitt who arrived in the Cape Colony in Jan 1859 on board the sailing ship 'Vocalist'. The details I have as to his origins is very sparse indeed, as all I have is the fact that he was from Limerick in Ireland.
As I know absolutely nothing regarding obtaining details in England and Ireland I was wondering if anyone can offer any assistance as to where to start.
- Ray Pitt
Queensland
Australia

David Pitt, son of Sarah Prosser Christopher, Herefordshire, England

I am looking for information on David PITT of Michaelchurch Eskley/St. Margaret’s, Herefordshire.

What I do know about him is that he and his wife Mary (maiden name unknown) have the following children baptized at Michaelchurch Eskley: James, 1739; Jane, 1742; David, 1744; John, 1746; Thomas, 1747; Sarah, 1748; Hannah, 1750; William, 1751; Elizabeth, 1753; Samuel, 1754; and Ann, 1757. On a 1747 baptism his residence is listed as St. Margaret’s and I found a burial for a David PITT at St. Margaret’s 22 March 1786.

I am trying to verify whether my David Pitt is the same individual listed in a Lord Abergavenny Estate lease record of 8 Feb. 1736/37 for land in Upper Mescoed to Thomas CHRISTOPHER of St. Margaret’s and wife Sarah for lives of David PITT, son of Sarah, age 21, and Samuel SANDERS, age 2, and Sarah SANDERS, age 8, grandchildren of Sarah.

I found a marriage record at Michaelchurch Eskley for Thomas CHRISTOPHER of St. Margaret’s and Sarah PROSSER, widow, on 7 Feb 1736/37. And I found a burial for Sarah CHRISTOPHER on 11 Oct 1741. There is another lease agreement in the estate records for 1736/37 in which Sarah is listed as the third life to Thomas PRICHARD and his wife Elizabeth of Clodock.

Is anyone has additional information on any of these individuals, it might prove helpful in my research.
