I live in Northfield, and have been fascinated doing research on the subject. While in the beginning, it was believed one of the dead robbers was Charlie Pitts. After years of research, it has been pretty much proven that the robber that was actually killed was Sam Wells. Charlie Pitts/Sam Wells was not killed in the bank raid in Northfield, but was killed 2 weeks later at the Hanska Slough, near Madelia, MN by a posse of seven.

Pitts family of OK/AR

My husband is Jason DeWayne Pitts son to Robert Williams Pitts Sr B. July 1951 Arkansas D. Aug 2009 Oklahoma. He is the son of Charles Lester Pitts b. July 1924 maybe AR? d May 2004 OR and Mother Faye Jean Aldridge 1924-1987. Charles was the son of Robert William Pitts b about 1903 in Arkansas wife I have was Dorothy Gertrude Jackson b 1906. I have that Robert William Pitts was the son of George Martin Pitts b 12 July 1877 Mississippi and Lucy Agneas Head. He had several brothers and sisters Charlie Pitts 1899, Elgin Pitts 1905, Elmer Pitts 1907, Lena May Pitts 1909-1979, Nellie 1914 and George Edwin Pitts 1916-1999.

I have found this in the census and through what little my Motherinlaw could tell me. I found George Martin in the 1880 census as being 2 living with a Father B.L and mother L.A. Sisters M.L and M.J but I cannot find any more information on them. If anyone has more information linking B.L. Pitts to others I would appreciate it. On the 1880 Census it says he's 25 and it shows an E. Ward as "mother". It also says they lived in Mississippi and that his father and mother were from S.C.

Hello Rosie
When making a genalogy query, it is helpful to others to know what state(s) your Pitts were from and the approximate/actual birthdates. There are so many William Pitts all over the country that we need to narrow it down. If you know the wife/mother's name of your last William that helps to narrow it down too. Let us know.

Michele

Which Pitts and in which county and city would be helpful. I had posted information about the Pitts side looking at Wills and Deeds in a another thread. Here is the thread info for:

This is only for the Pitts of Jones County. I am still doing research on one of my relatives Sharp Pitts. I was looking to see if he had any siblings. I am currently looking at wills and land deeds. If you have the last name Pitts this information is useful.

Slave Owner John Pitts gave negro slaves to the following

worth $1300 to his daughter Martha Blount:

Feriba Pitts
Peggy Pitts
Toby Pitts
George Pitts (might be Sharp's older brother)

worth $3,350 to his son Dauphin Pitts:

Arnold Pitts
James Pitts
Mick Pitts
Hasty Pitts
Geeasy Pitts
Vina Pitts

Worth $3400 to his daughter Ann Maria Gibson:

Moses Pitts
Tom Pitts
Issac Pitts
Silvey Pitts
Sipe Pitts
Sarah Pitts
Walter Pitts

Worth $20,165 estate/slaves to his wife and rest of children
unknown.

If any of these slaves are in your family tree let me know.
Hello,
My grandfather, James A Pitts, was raised by his grandparents, Emanuel and Viney Pitts. I found records to show this in the 1900 census.

I believe that Carrie Pitts is my great grandmother, giving birth to my grandfather, James, when she was around 12. She gave him her maiden name because she was unmarried at the time.

James A Pitts grew up and married my grandmother, Martha Greene, around 1925-26. In the 1930 census they were living in Chicago, where they had my mother.

I know very little about my grandfather, James A Pitts. I do not remember ever meeting him as he was not with my grandmother when I was a child. I do not know if he remarried and if/when he died. I am interested in finding other members of the extended Pitts family. I would like to know more about my grandfather, his history, and his family stories.
My Grandpa, Emory William Mangis, received a farm south of Springfield, IN from his Father, William Jasper Mangis in 1929. He sold it in 1969. My Dad told me there was a house south of the barn that had belonged to some Pitts. As a boy he was told that the James and Youngers would retreat to the Pitts family member's home there when the law was on their trail. Dad said in the thirty's he would plow up bricks there. There is a graveyard in Springfield with Pitts headstones. They were readable in the 1960s. The graveyard is 200 yards west of Springfield Road and 150 yards south of Durlin Road. You can see the headstones on Google Maps in a grove of trees.
David Mangis cell 910-232-0408 email DavidMangis@gmail.com

Hi Scott,

We've been in contact about your wife's Haskin family connection to my husband's Parish family (from Bastard Twp., Leeds Co., Canada West) and now I learn she's related to ME, also?? Talk about a small world!

This Pitts family, and my "fibbin' gr grandmother" who descends from them, have been a major brick wall for me for 30 years. However, in 2003 when I was still in Cheyenne I did a lot of work on them in Indiana land records and have a huge folder of documents to share, including some for the Kinzies. A fellow genealogy volunteer and I both had families in the same county in Indiana, so to keep the cost down we each ordered 3-4 films of deeds from Salt Lake and shared them in order to track our families.

If you contact me off-board I'll scan and email the marriage record to you. I also got it from a microfilm ordered from the LDS FHLibrary in Salt Lake.

Sandy in Omaha
wunder dot woman at ymail dot com

My wife descends from Lewis Pitts and Cassandra George. I know almost nothing about them. I'd love a copy of their marriage record if possible. My wife descends from their daughter Didamie Alcinda Pitts who married David Hall Kinzie. Didamie and David ended up in Jefferson County, Nebraska. Supposedly Lewis and Cassandra died in Gage County, but I've never been able to find them in a Gage County cemetery. Have you made any progress since this was posted?

I once thought Martin Pitts d. Pike Cty, GA 1843, was a son of John Pitts and Hannah Belton, and that being on Ancestry. com may be a result of someone putting it on there from my notes. However, I now no longer believe that could be possible due to Martin's age and the ages of John and Hannah's children. Also the marriage year for Martin is 1812, not 1822 as is shown in one place on line. If you have data from wills, deeds,Bible records, etc that show Martin as being a son of John Pitts and Hannah Belton I would like to know about it. I believe I am correct in saying that there is a DNA match for descendents of John Pitts and descendents of Martin Pitts which would mean they were related but not necessarily father and son. Also, Martin Pitts died in GA in 1843, not 1863. Thanks, Alton Pitts
