Your message is years old, and I am new to this research. I am a descendant of Wm Brown Pleasant. Years ago my mother, Frances Pleasant Mckendrick and her younger sister, Willie Pleasant Mclean made a Family Tree of the descendants
of Wm Brown ( my greatgreat grandfather) and Nancy Milner. I also have a picture of Stephen and Wm.Brown.

Jannett married William Wrenn. Many years ago I received a hand drawn family tree from Mrs Louise Glenn of Roxboro,NC where she had generations of descendants of Jannett( but no middle name)

According to Pleasants and Allied Families, Norma Carter Miller & George Lane Miller, 1980, Roger Atkinson was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England around 1725. He came to Dinwiddie County around 1750, settling on a farm named "Mansfield". The same source lists his parents as Rev. Roger Atkinson and Jane Benson. There appears to be a disconnect between the parents. Could you give your source of the Massachusetts connection?
Ann Pleasants was the daughter of John Pleasants (~1697 - 1771) and Margaret Jordan (1702 - 1746).
Contact me if you would like to get additional information on her lineage.
Good luck,
John Salter

To find marriage listings you could try:

1) FamilySearch libraries. They have hundreds of genealogy libraries around the world. (These are the "Mormons") You can see if one is near you by clicking "Library" at their site www.familysearch.org. They have microfilm of marriage info for both Mitchell County and Berrien County, Georgia.

2) Books. See www.worldcat.org. If your library doesn't have the books you want, then you could probably get them delivered to your library through InterLibrary Loan OR you could email the libraries that have them to see if their reference librarian can help you.

Here are two books that might help:
Mitchell County, Georgia marriage records : "the first fifty years"
by Max L Tatum

Berrien County, Georgia marriage records index 1856 to 1949
by Jessie H Paulk

To find obituaries:

Do you know where and when any of Lettie's brothers, sisters, parents or relatives died? If so, contact the closest library and ask if they have newspapers for that time and how you could find an obit. There are also newspaper databases online, but most of them are not free.

You could try these things:

Search marriage records in the Georgia county she was living in.

Search for siblings' obits -- they might mention her with a married name, along with where she lived.

Gus and Effie then lived in East St. Louis, Illinois until their deaths in 1948 and 1951. I have photos and information if Effie and her sister Cora are any part of your tree.

C Heilig

I am descended from the 2nd immigrant you mentioned, George Pleasant from England and I have found the parish records in Virginia. George's son, Buford or Beaufort was my ancestor, then Thomas and another George who moved to NC then to TN and ILL. Some of these had brothers named William but I don't know if there is a connection. Keep up the good work.

Your post is several years old so you may have solved your research problem by now.

An earlier poster indicated the Pleasants in Virginia were French settlers. That information is not accurate. There were two Pleasants immigrants from England in the 1600s, and they were Anglican. The most prominent family was that of John Pleasants from Norwich England. He arrived Virginia in 1665 and he was about 21. He married a widow, Jane Larcome Tucker about 1670. At that time he had converted to Quakerism. This Pleasants family was in England for 4 prior generations, but are presumed to have migrated from the town of Plaisaunce in France prior, and thus adopted a form of that name when surname usage became required.

The other was a contemporary of John Pleasants named George Pleasants. He was also from England and a member of the traditional Church of England and there are early parish records on him. George Pleasants family was primarily in York, Sussex and Surry Counties in Virginia

I am descended from Virginia Pleasants slaves. The slaveholdings of this family were extensive and included several counties including Henrico, Goochland, Powhatan, and Halifax.

What was the last place in Virginia you have record of your Pleasants family?

PLEASANT(S) DNA Project

Hi,
I am copying this to both PLEASANT and PLEASANTS lists so you may get more than one message if you subscribe to both.
I am the Project Group Administrator on FamilyTreeDNA for the PLEASANT, PLEASANTS, PLEASANCE, etc., family name Project. The Project is trying to connect people with the same Y-chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) markers or those with similar Surnames.
If you would like to participate and potentially verify your genealogy lineage by matching others with the same DNA, then there are 3 ways to do this:

1. Go to FTDNA.com and order a kit. A mouth swab kit will be sent to you. FTDNA offers a reduced price for people that order the kit through the Project. Please go to FTDNA.com for more details and pricing. Ordering through the Project will give the discount and make sure that your results can be compared with other Project members.

2. If you have already had FTDNA Y-DNA tests done and would like to join the Project then please contact me directly and I will guide you through the process of joining the Project.

3. If you have had Y-DNA testing done by another company and would like to join the Project, please send me your results and I get them entered into the project. Some interpretation of the results may be necessary.

Participants should be DIRECT male descendants of a PLEASANT(S) ancestor. The Y-Chromosome test (Y-DNA) is male specific and only direct male lineage is traced through the test. I suggest the 37-marker test since it gives considerably greater accuracy than the 12- or 25-marker tests.
The leader in DNA testing for genealogy is Family Tree DNA. They have the largest database specifically for genealogy related testing and have offered web space and reduced rates for people that do the testing through them. I have no affiliation with them but I have used them to do testing on other lines in the family and I am very satisfied with their professionalism, pricing and service. Other companies also offer similar services. Please feel free to check them out but be sure to use the rates for the same number of markers when doing comparisons.
The DNA sample consists of a painless cheek swab and results are available a few weeks after the sample is submitted. The test results are only of genealogical value, they cannot identify a person individually so there should be no concerns about security.

If you are interested in joining the project please go to the FTDNA web site at FTDNA.com or contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,
John Salter
johnsalter2 at bellsouth.net
(email address needs to be amended)
Hi,

I am copying this to both PLEASANT and PLEASANTS related sites so you may get more than one message if you subscribe to both.

I am coordinating a new project to establish a DNA database for the PLEASANT and PLEASANTS families. The goals of the project are to:
1. Identify people that are closely related to each other
2. Determine if the families descended from John PLEASANTS of Henrico Co., VA and George PLEASANT of York Co., VA are closely related.

Participants should be DIRECT male descendants of a PLEASANT(S) ancestor. The Y-Chromosome test (Y-DNA) is male specific and only direct male lineage is traced through the Y-DNA test. I suggest a 37-marker test since they give considerably more accuracy than the 12- or 25-marker tests.

The leader in DNA testing for genealogy is Family Tree DNA. The test results are only of genealogical value, they cannot identify a person individually so there should be no concerns about security.

People who have been tested by another testing company can also submit their results to the FTDNA database, but the results sometimes require a small amount of conversion by a knowledgeable person. Feel free to send them to me.

There is currently no project set up for the PLEASANT(S) name so I will need to get the names of interested people before I submit the project information.

If you are interested in joining the project and submitting a sample for testing, please contact me and I will send you details on the cost of testing, etc. As soon as I hear from a couple of people who are willing to participate we can start the project and develop a website. Please don’t submit a request for testing until I get the website up and get a reduced rate online. Note that testing payment will be done directly with the testing company over a secure website.

If you already have been tested with FTDNA, please let me know. We can link you to the project and you will be able to compare your results with other participants.

If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email. You can also find out more about DNA testing, projects, privacy concerns, etc., on www.familytreedna.com .

I look forward to hearing from you.

John Salter
johnsalter2 at bellsouth.net
(email address needs to be amended)

Hi,

Has any member of either family, with an unbroken MALE line (is named PLEASANT or PLEASANTS,) been Y-DNA tested? If we could find members from both families it would show whether or not there was a close relationship.

I would be happy to act as the coordinator if people with the surname PLEASANT or PLEASANTS will e-mail me their Y-DNA test results. Results will remain anonymous and be identified only by first initials. Preferred would be a minimum of 37 markers but any results are welcome.

The goal would be to post a message on this list as to the relationship between the two families.

Currently there are 6 people with the surname PLEASANT and 3 people with the surname PLEASANTS who have been tested by Family Tree DNA but there is no current PLEASANT[S] project.

Thanks,

John Salter
johnsalter2 at bellsouth.net
Note need for email address amendment

BTW, the Pleasants relationship is on my wife's side several generations back so I have no access to anybody with unbroken lineage.
Your information is probably correct. So many of these trees have errors, that I only regard them as clues until I can verify the data myself. That is why I always state how far back I have documented my research. The tree I was given does not go back to John Pleasants. It starts with George b. in England and does not say when he emigrated but that he had a son, George b. 17 Oct 1769 in York, VA. It also lists as sons, John b. abt 1670 and Joseph b. about 1672 but they may have been "borrowed" from your tree. These things can really get scrambled up.

I am getting my information from a book, "Pleasants and Allied Families", written by Norma Carter Miller and George Lane Miller in 1980. I have had this book for several years and have never found a mistake in it.
It is not believed that John Pleasants b 1644/45 in England and emigrated to Virginia about 1670 and George Pleasant who emigrated from England to Virginia about 1669 are related. At least, no proof has been found.
I have no record that John Pleasants had a brother named George and he did not have a son named George. His sons were John and Joseph.
I would be glad to help you with any other questions. Jan
