Re: Richard Plummer's farm (built before 1815) in Cambria County, PA, USA

Since this Richard Plummer went on to have many descendants who were born and lived in Cambria County, PA, I'm wondering if he could be an ancestor of the Emily F. (or J.) Plummer I've been searching for.

My Emily F. (or J.) Plummer was listed on the 1860 census for Carroll Twp, Cambria County, PA, living with Christian and Rebecca Fulmer and their three youngest children. Emily was listed as six years old on this census, so would have been born in PA about 1854 or 1855. This Emily may be the 15-year-old "Emma" who was listed as the adopted daughter of the Fulmers on the 1870 census.

Emma Fulmer was my great-grandmother. Since she was adopted at a young age, I have not been able to find out anything about her birth parents.

Can anyone help me identify the Emily F. (or J) Plummer, who was about 6 years old in 1860 and living in Cambria County, PA with the Fulmer family?

Pam, I've seen this same thing on someone's post. I have an Asa Plummer in Shrewsbury, Rutland, Vermont from 1790 census. I wonder if that's our Asa?

I thought Deborah's last name was "Nee" but of course that could be a typo or just someone using Deborah ? nee Plummer. Who knows?

I have searched Vermont records but females were difficult to locate especially not knowing if Nee was truly her last name.

Getting frustrated......

Theresa, I don't know if you have seen this before. I found this post on Genforum. It has the name of the book I spoke of, pages, author and some more clues. Possibly we should be looking for Debrah in Vermont......

History of Union County, OH; Beers; 1883
Vermont settlers in Canada left Canada for U. S. Sept. 20, 1812 including the following families:
Russell Bigelow, Moses Patrick, Asa Plummer, Joab Hoyt, Amos Hawley, Dr. Gideon Hawley, Peris and Joseph Walton and Nehimiah Saline? after six weeks arrived in Worthington, OH
rks bk 13 pg 14
Asa Plummer's children
Joseph m. Eunice Cummings, both died in Champaign County, OH
Asa, Jr m. Malinda Buckman, died in Delaware County, OH
Alvin returned to Canada and married then went to Illinois
Horace did likewise
Hannah m. Mr. Hannaman, a lawyer and went to Illinois
Reuben ? m. John ? Erwin and moved to Texas
Wiley m. Miss Randall settled in Illinois
Clarinda m. Hyal Buckman moved to Illinois
Calista died young
Tallman died young
Nelson moved to Illinois

Apparently many Vermont families went to Canada to settle until the War of 1812 broke out and then had to leave Canada. In some cases they also lost their land.....

Pam
Could be. I used these books as a guide and then look for any documents that would either verify or disprove the information. If you noticed that 1 author had our Joseph (father of Asa Sr.) with 4 children while the other I believe had only 3 listed. This could account for variations of numeration of individuals.

Do a comparison of the connecting family groups....Dates, locations marriages. No one is perfect and there may have been some misyakes. The farther we go from the point of origin the more the chances of error.

Pam

Pam
Alvin Plummer's book stops at Asa Sr. #953. That is why the info I sent you from Marysville, ohio is the key. Your Rueben and the rest of the Plummers were the major pioneers of the area.

The book I mentioned that outlined the family relationships is located at the Marysville Public Library, in Marysville, Ohio. I think the title might be something like "The history of Union County" and was written in the late 1800s. It use to be online for free, but I think you have to pay for access now. The actual book is in the Library's Genealogy department.

If you are looking for a will then the only chance of finding one would be in Knox Co. Illinois. I have not looked for it...its on the todo list.

Pam

Look under #469 Joseph Plumer. Hannah Lee is his wife and listed as one of his children in #953 Asa.
How does your Plummer line run going back?

I have Plummers in that area before my William Henry Plummer b. 1813. His father was John, Jr. b. 1796, John, Sr. b. abt 1777, Joseph, Jr. b. abt 1750, Joseph, Sr. Constable and Moses b. 1690 Newbury, MA. These descended from Francis Plummer who sailed into Newbury, MA in 1636.
William Henry moved to Lauderdale Co., MS.

I assumed all the Plummers in that area were related. If you will give me your names, I will check my huge Plummer database for them. I will be glad to compare notes with you.

Jeanette pjkh@comcast.net

I received a shock when viewing the 1880 census data for my 3rd great grandfather Bernard Plummer (b1826, North Carolina). Like the previous two census reports he was living in Cumberland County, North Carolina (where I live). The 1880 census lists his father's birthplace as France. I never imagined that would ever be the case as there have been Plummers living in this area since the 1700s. Bernard is also the last person in my Plummer line I've been able to find. If anyone can shed any light on this, I would be very grateful.

Asa Plummer

I looked at the Perley book, The Plumer Genealogy, Francis Plumer, who settled at Newbury, Massachusetts & some of his descendants, but it does not show Asa Plummer (114 232)nor does mine show the other Asa Plummer (122 412)except in the index. Do you know if anybody has another edition of the book which would show those Asa?

I think if I could find something to connect a Plummer family in Canada, then I might be able to determine which Asa Plummer I'm looking for and go from there. I'm stumped!

I am researching my family tree and have reached back to the early 1800's, to my great, great, great grandfather, William Bufton Plummer. His cousin John Plummer was a well known author & poet around the time of the French Revolution.

If any one can link in these names, I would be interested to hear from you

No, I don't live in MS. I go there a couple of times a year to visit relatives. There are several Plummers in the Meridian phonebook but I don't know any of them. Many are from Francis Plummer but some could be from the Warren Co., NC Plummers who came into Gloucester Co., VA early.

Lines I am researching who went to Lauderdale Co., MS by 1850 from VA, SC, GA, AL:

King, Till, Hodges, Parker, Partin, Sisson, Slayden, Rainey, Rivers, Roberts, Bruner, Plummer, Jones, Yarrell, Miller, Radford

Jeanette
pjkh@comcast.net

You are absolutely correct: These two authors give two different names for wife of Joseph II Plummer.
You will love the Perley book as it tells the story and quotes the records.

Anne Palmer, b. abt 1635 d. 18 Oct 1665, second wife of Francis Plummer, the Immigrant, was the widow of William Palmer. He well could have been a brother of his first wife, Ruth!

Check out the Newbury, MA Genealogy websites like:
http://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Essex/Newbury/BirthsP.shtml#PL...

and others listed. There are great pictures of Plummer graves and the whole area.

Hmmm, it looks like we have competing sources.

http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/F...

It does state that Joseph Plummer II is married to Hannah Swett. As I told Theresa, I would VERIFY. I haven't looked at this tree for a couple of years so this is my only source besided Ancestry.

I will look on Heritage Quest for the book you mentioned.

My question is where did you get the info for Ruth Palmer? I saw her listed an number of time on line and it got me totally confused. Is she Ann's sister, Francis' 2nd wife?

Gee.....Now between both you and Theresa you make me want to start digging again!

Thanks!
Pam

Sidney Perley's book THE PLUMER'S GENEALOGY about Francis Plumer of Newbury, MA has Joseph Plummer II married
Hannah Jewett not Hannah Swett, on 20 Jan 1684.
This is Joseph, son of Joseph, son of Francis Plummer and Ruth Palmer, the Immigrants.

Please recheck your source and let us know what you found.

Hannah Swett b. 1674 d. 1749 MA m. Archelaus Woodman b. 1672 d. 1766. Her parents were: John Swett and Mary Plummer, dau. of Samuel Plummer, son of Francis Plummer who married 6 Dec 1670.

Perley's Book on Francis Plummer descendants is available from Heritage Quest on your home computer through most local Libraries by giving your Library card number. You can read, save or print it. There are many books available from them that are not on Ancestry.com.

I descend from: Francis>Joseph>Joseph>Moses>Joseph>Joseph>John,Sr.>John,Jr.>William Henry>Sarah Jane m.
Theresa, this is the last of the info I have. My suggestion is do a google search. There is a lot of info on Francis and the family.

1st Generation:
Father- Francis (Plumer) Plummer
b. 1594 Wales, England or scotland
d. 17 Jan 1672 Newbury, Mass
M. 1619 Ruth
2nd m. Ann Palmer 21 Mar 1648 Newbury, Mass
3rd m. Beatrice Cantlebury 29 Nov 1665
Mother- Ruth (unknown)
b. 1600 d. 17 Jul 1647 Newbury
Mother of all of Francis' 4 Children.
Children-
Samuel b.1619 England or Scotland
d.1702 Newbury, Mass
m. Mary Bidfield abt 1646
Joseph 1630-1683
m. Sarah Cheney
Hannah b.1632 England or scotland
d. 8 Dec 1854 Newbury
m. Samuel Moores 3 May 1653 Newbury, Mass
Mary b.1634 New England
d. 1682 Newbury
m. John Chenney 20 May 1660 Newbury

I have a little bit written down in my notes. Like I said I printed off a lot of articles so this is a small slice of the pie.
Francis Plummer and Ruth landed in New England in 1633. Became a Freeman in 1634. Later in 1635 he and the family settlend in Newbury Mass on the north side of the Parker River. his occupation was as a Linen Weaver. In 1635 he recieved his license to keep and ordinary-Tavern.

As far as parents go I have see listed on Ancestry and other sites John Plumer and Elizabeth Driver (Both born 1570) or another possibility is Richard Plumer of North End, Walden England with 1st wife Elizabeth Driver and 2nd as Mary Roffe. Sad part is that none of these claims are sourced so I have NO idea where they came from.

Ship that they came on is either the Hector or I'm betting on the Elizabeth Dorcus.

I hope this helps.

Pam

Gosh thanks for all this! About Reuben....
all I know is that he was born in Canada about 1810 (have no proof of this). Reuben who was about 9 moved to Worthington, Ohio around 1819. I'm sure with his parents and siblings. The next time I find him he is mArried to Sophia Erwin in 1831. In 1833 their first child is born, John Erwin Plummer in Hillsboro, Highland Co, Ohio. Reuben gets a license as a Methodist minister in 1834 and preaches 1835-37 as a circuit preacher in the Chilicoth, Ohio area. In 1840 Reuben moves to TX for his wife's health. She dies in TX in 1841. In the 1850 census of Peach Creek, Gonzales, TX, he must have remarried an Elizabeth. In 1850 census, Reuben's son, John E Plummer shows up as 17 years old and must have left soon after to pursue medicine. Where I don't know. 1855-58 Reuben lives in Benton Co., Arkansas then John marries Septima Gray and they all move back to TX. John Plummer moves back to the Missouri/Arkansas area and practices medicine, but Reuben must stay in TX because he shows up in a land grant for Goliad, Gonzales, Victor-County Dewitt, TX in 1861. Then I have Reuben dying in TX in 1861. John's wife, Septima, dies in 1881 and he remarries Melissa Phillips in 1882 and they have 2 children, Erwin (female) and my grandfather, James Robert. John died in 1905 and is buried in Arkansas. My grandfather, James R married once and we're not sure what happened but divorced her and left the Arkansas area and moved south to Mississippi. He was also a physician and practiced in lumber camps during the Depression, served in WWI and was living in Forest, MS when he died in 1941. Hope this helps! I can't wait to write down all you've given me! T

Theresa, below is the info that I have on my tree. Please take the time to verify. I put it aside for a while and have not had time to really work on it. Some of it is from Ancestry, but a large part of it is from “Lineage of Mr. Francis Plumer, Newbury, Massechusetts 1635” LDS by Mr. Alvin Plummer 1923

The only first hand records are the items that listed Ohio. II traveled down to Marysville, Ohio and went through all the records that are housed there. According to them Asa sr. moved his family from Mass., to Quebec and after the War if 1812 he settled and founded southern Ohio.

7th Generation:
Father- Asa Plummer Sr. 1769-15 Mar 1858 knoxville, Knox,Ill
Mother-Debrah B. Quebec, Canada or Vermont (Children have her listed as VT being her birth place on census)
d. 23 Jan 1854 Knox, Ill
Children-
Asa Jr. 1797-after 1830 Claibourne, Union, Ohio
m. Melinda Buckman 17 Jan 1816 Champaign Co, Ohio
Asa Jr. and Melinda are the parents of my Clarinda who married Eli McNier.
Clarinda 1809 Dunham, Quebec, Canada-1880
m.
Theresa, I don't know how far you have gotten. I found a book via the LDS Family Search on the descendents of Francis Plummer. Your Asa is from his line. You may wish to check it out on-line and then try verifying the info. According to the author the family came over in the early 1630s and settled in the Mass. area. There is a lot of information out there on him and it is facinating.

I am also looking for Asa Plummer - I have found several Asa Plummers, but this Asa Plummer went to Canada with his wife, Deborah, and several children. While in Canada, they had my kin, Reuben and your kin, Clarinda. I'm thinking they might have gone from Mass. to New Hampshire or vermont and gone on into Canada. Reuben was born in Dunham, Missisquoi Quebec around 1810. They left this area around 1819-1820 and settled in Union Co., Ohio. I've hit a stone wall though cause I can't find any record or source on Asa other than censuses which really don't tell you anything. I hope my information helps you. Theresa

I don't mean to stir up anything, but I wouldn't consider DNA the end all, be all. Certainly it can help define direct male lines, but we all must accept that "extra-marital" births were not invented in the 20th century. In the past, a "base-begotten" child was given the surname of the single mother. These children were frequently raised by the family (ie, grandparents) and it was certainly easier to keep these things quiet in the past, even if everyone knew about it, the documentation might be slim and none unless a court case was filed. Review of "bastardy bonds" of various counties (Nash County, NC's are particularly entertaining) shows that this is a common problem.

Go to the Rolofson family tree on this site. kellyhenderson67 is the owner.

You might have to search for Deborah Nee or Asa Plummer then use the pull down menus for list of their children. My problem is I don't know the source for names of the children. Good luck!
