Hello...
I went back at the Longmont Ledger Extract to see if there are any other articles about the Plumstead family...and sorry to say the only story mentioned is the son that died.
Sorry I could not have been more help.
Good luck in your research,
You might contact the Mountain View Cemetery in Longmont...they have a website. The lady there has been very helpful when I have called. She could tell you if there are any other Plumstead family members born there. They have the original cards and I have found alot of useful info...
Anna

Mr. and Mrs R. J. Plumstead would be my G-gparents. They only had one child who survived to adulthood Robert Clemens Plumstead. I've heard rumors of still born and infants who died shortly after birth in this family. This child would be my grand-uncle.

Hi Susie,

I did a little more research and found that Willim W. Plumstead married Margaret Romine (aka Romain, b. 27-July-1815) at Bergin NJ on 21-Feb-1835. William W. Plumsted is in Jefferson Twp., Morris Co. NJ in the 1840 US Census. He also served on the Jefferson Twp. committee in 1841, 1842, and 1844 and the school committee in 1841. After 1844 he completely disappears and is not found in any subsequent records - I believe he died before 1850. However, Margaret Plumstead is in the 1850 (Manchester Twp., Passaic Co. NJ) and 1880 US census (City of Paterson, Passaic Co. NJ). Manchester Twp. was formed on 7-Feb-1837 from Bergen Co. NJ, so Margaret apparently returned to her roots where she was married in 1835. Margaret is in the James A. and Mary M. KIPP household with "step daughter" Viola ROMAIN (age 14), which helps confirm Margaret's identify.

The surprising aspect of my story is that in the 1850 US Census Margaret has two children with her including Mary J. (age 6, b. 1844) and William W. PLUMSTEAD (age 3, b. 1847). The 1900 US Census shows that my GG-grandmother Josephine A. PLUMSTEAD Tuttle was born in Feb-1849. Therefore, if William W. and Margaret Romaine PLUMSTEAD were her parents, then Josephine should have been with her mother Margaret and sibblings in the 1850 census.

This leads me to conclude that my great-aunt Harriet TUTTLE's written recollection of Josephine's father, i.e., Wm PLUMSTEAD the "artist" may be incorrect. (Harriet TUTTLE is deceased). This leads me to believe that your Joseph PLUMSTEAD and Abby STRAWAY are the parents of my GG-grandmother Josephine. The 1900 census shows Josephine's middle name was "Avina," but I doubt the accuracy of this record. I could not find a single instance of Avina being used as women's name on the web - it only appears as a surname. I believe, but have not confirmed yet, that Josephine's middle name was Adriana. This hunch is based on the fact that one of my great-aunts (Josephine's grand-daughter) was named Adriana Josephine TUTTLE. Joseph PLUMSTEAD from your bible reportedly has a male (presumably his son) named "Adrian PLUMSTEAD" living with him in the 1860 census. "Adrian" is 11 years old (b. 1849), which corresponds to my Josephine's birth year. I'm wondering whether "Adrian" is actually my GG-grandmother "Adriana" since the birth year is identical, implying that the census record is incorrect. You can help confirm these facts by sending me 1) the date of birth and 2)middle name of Joesphine in your family bible if recorded; and 3) whether a son named "Adrian" born in 1849 is also listed in the bible.

Other circumstances make me think that we share a common grandfather Joseph. I have other great-aunts and uncles (Grandchildren of Josephine's) that share the same given name as Joseph PLUMSTEAD's issue including "Alfred James," "Harriet," "Emma," and perhaps others. I haven't confirmed the next link with vital records, but I suspect that Emma L. PLUMSTEAD, dau. of Joseph, married Isaac MESLER from Sucassuna NJ. My GG-grandparents Edmund H. TUTTLE and Josephine separated sometime before 1910. Josephine is shown residing with Isaac MESLER and his brother Nathaniel in Sucassuna in the 1920 census. Emma probably died between 1910-1920. This makes perfect sense if Isaac MESLER was Josephine's brother-in-law and she returned home to be near her roots (Sucassuna-Kenvil NJ) in her later years.

Your assistance in solving my family mystery would be sincerely appreciated. Please feel free to respond to my email address. rctrautz@comcast.net

To answer your question, US Census records reportedly exist for 1820 Roxbury Twp. Morris Co. NJ and for 1830 NJ. I will check next time I'm at the library.

Yours Truly,

Rob TRAUTZ (of TUTTLE & PLUMSTEAD lineage)
Pleasant Hill CA

Hi, My grandmother bible went back to Joseph And Abigal Straway Plumstead.Joe & Abby did have a daughter Josephine born in 1849, She was in the 1850 census Jefferson Twsp but was not on the 1860 census.I believe she died. In 1820 Newburgh Orange County N.Y. Joshua Plumstead had 3 sons all under the age 10, by 1840 he was in Jefferson Twsp. N.J..I can not find a census for 1830 Jefferson Twsp ? It would make sense that William was a brother to my James since they both has daughters with the same name.I think we are searching for the same family.I also think Lewis plumstead was the other brother.I have not been able as yet to prove any of this information.
Hi,

I also have Plumsteads in my family tree and would be interested in the family information contained in your grandmother's bible. I'm trying to track Josephine Avina PLUMBSTEAD Tuttle, my great-great grandmother. I believe she is probably a cousin to your James PLUMSTEAD, but she could also be his sister - that's why I would like to know if she is listed in your bible.

The information I have is from US and NJ census records and includes:

Clarrisa PLUMSTEAD, b. 1797 NJ (possibly Joseph's Mother because she is in his household in 1860 census)

1. Joseph PLUMSTEAD, b. 1820 NY, mar. Abbey B. ---, b. 1824

Joseph and Abbey had six children including:
1.1 James A. PLUMSTEAD, b. 1844 NJ, mar. Caroline ---, b. 1846 NY
1.2 Harriet PLUMSTEAD, b. 1846, mar.?
1.3 Adrian PLUMSTEAD, b. 1849, mar.?
1.4 Emma L. PLUMSTEAD, b. 1852, poss. mar., Isaac R. MESLER
1.5 Joshua V. PLUMSTEAD, b. 1854, mar. abt 1880, Flora M. --, b. 1864
1.6 Mary PLUMSTEAD, b. 1863, poss. mar., Augustus I. ZEEK

James and Caroline PLUMSTEAD had the following children
1.1.1 Minnie PLUMSTEAD, b. 1868
1.1.2 Mary PLUMSTEAD, b. 1869
1.2.3 William J. PLUMSTEAD, b. 1870
1.2.4 Lena PLUMSTEAD, b. 1878?

The father of my Great-Great grandmother Josephine is reportedly William W. PLUMSTEAD (handed down through oral family history). William W. PLUMSTEAD was in Jefferson Twp., Morris Co., NJ in 1840 and was listed as a member of the school board in the 1840s, but he must have died prior to 1850 because I can't find him in the records thereafter.

Your great-great-great grandfather Joseph (1) also resided in Jefferson Twp because I came across the birth record for Joshua V. PLUMSTEAD (1.5) who was born in Jefferson Twp., Morris Co., NJ. I suspect that Joshua's sibblings including your great-great grandfather James PLUMSTEAD (1.1) were born in Jefferson too. William W. and Joseph (1) may have been brothers.

My great-great grandmother Josephine was from Kevill or Succasunna Roxbury Twp, Morris Co., NJ and Joseph (1) and his family also resided there. James (1.1) son of Joseph (1) moved to Troupsburg, Steuban Co., NY between 1860 and 1870. Troupsburg is a few miles from Rexville NY where your grandmother was born.

Census records show that Joseph PLUMSTEAD (1) was born in NY. I don't know if he was from the Troupsberg area. There are other PLUMSTEADS prior to 1850 in the Marlboro, Ulster Co., NY area.

Please write back.

I have a lot of information on the Reeves and associated families and an wxtensive report on the Dain line and extended families.

Would be most interested in finding out your information and sharing with you what I have that you might possibly need on both families.

Thanks,

Sharon

I have an Essex based Plumstead on my family tree.

My great great grandparents Edmund Plumsted (later spelt Plumstead) and Susan Webber were married November 14th 1844 were married Bures, Suffolk. Both were described as being of full age.

Edmund signed with his mark, was described as a porter living in Coggeshall with his father listed as Thomas Plumsted a farmer.

Edmund and Susan moved to the Essex/Cambridge border around Linton/Saffron Waldron - he working on the railways in their the early days.

I do not suppose that anyone has Edmund or Thomas Plumstead/Plumsted of Coggeshall on their family trees

Regards Richard Derrick
Hello A
The Index to the British Civil Registrations shows an Emily PLUMSTEAD married in the second quarter of 1874 in Colchester. The reference is VOL 4a page 417. This marriage certificate will give her fathers name. Alternatively, the 1861 census of Coggeshall should give her fathers name and more.
I have noted the Plumstead details of the 1841, 1851 and 1881 census; but not the 1861 census. Emily fell through the rather large crack between 1851 and 1881!
If you can give me the fathers name I should be able to help with back generations, siblings etc.
Please let me know how you get on.
Best regards
Alan

Hi Allison
There was a George PLUMSTEAD baptised in The Great Coggeshall Independant 11 Feb 1821.
The 1841 Census finds him in a nearby village of Faulkborn. At that time he was unmarried and I have him listed as a Shoemaker. I have no record of him in 1851. He was not in Coggeshall. Whether this is the same George I can not say.
This George came from a large family; his father was Nathaniel b 1772 Coggeshall, his mother Mary Barring.
His grandparents were Nathaniel and Hannah Cook m 1763.
I am sure he is a desendent of Nathaniel PLUMSTEAD the Quaker from Boxted (1662)but as yet I have no link.
If you think this is worth pursueing please contact me directly at "plumline@xsinet.co.za".
Regards
Alan
Hi,

I have a PLUMSTEAD in my line in Great Coggeshall.

Rhoda Hume married William Plumstead (died 1862)(his father was Thomas) on 21/09/1851 in Great Coggeshall.

They had 4 children William 1852 died 1855, Arthur 1855 died 1931, Rhoda 1857 and Caroline 1859 died 1930

She then went on to marry my relative John Juniper in 1865.

Do any of these names ring any bells?

Regards

Karen
