Here is an example of the migration of this family from Canada to Manchester.

Pierre and Adelaide had a son, Joseph who married Georgiana Vachon. Joseph and Georgiana had a son named Joseph Hormidas William on Oct 25 1897. Hormidas' ss death index gives his correct birth date, but his WW1 draft card shows a date one year younger, 1898 (25 Oct). I don't know why, but this whole family seemed off on their birth dates often by one year! Here I've attached his birth record from St-Pierre-Baptiste were he was born. Note the record says mother and father were Joseph Poirier and Georgiana Vachon, just as his marriage record shows when he married Fabiola Durcharme in Manchester NH in 1921.
As you open up the photo, look on the bottom right hand side of the page, the last entry is his. Written in French, it says that on the 25 of October, 1897 ("Le vingt-quinc Octobre, mil huit cent quatre-vingt-dix sept), the undersigned priest "baptise" Joseph Hormidas, born the same day (ne le mene jour), son (legitimate son) of Joseph Poirier, farmer (cultavateur), and of Georgiana Vachon, of this parish. The godfather is William St. Pierre, Jr, farmer, and the godmother is Marie Poirier, his wife (uncle and aunt of Hormidas).

I found additional information that shows proof that both Pierre (and presumably Adelaide) came down to Manchester in the early 1880's, and stayed for a few years, then before the next census, moved to St. Pierre Baptiste. It was from there that many of their children either stayed in Manchester (like Esdras did) or moved with them back to Canada (to St. Pierre-Baptiste) as Pierre Jr did. Many of them fluctuated from St-Pierre-Baptiste to Manchester as job's were available, and women (or men) weren't ;). The Manchester City Directory, Census records, and St-Pierre-Baptiste catholic records told me this story.

Theophile Poirier dit Cayen (July 31 1848, St-Elzear -Nov 27 1912 Auburn Maine)

Found this record.....Note it says Theophile was 'dit Cayen'. 'Dit' was a 'war name' given to hide the soldiers true identity in order to protect him from personal retaliation from the enemy, but this case is interesting and seems different to me. 'Cayen' refers to where the family was from (Acadia). Theophile's father was Jean-Philippe, whose father was Pierre, whose father was Pierre, who was from Acadia and left as a result of British attacks on Beausejour. That Pierre was married to Marie Louise Gagne (Gagnier). Why the 'dit' name? Not sure... Although the record states that Philippe was 'dit Cayen' on this marriage document, I've found (at present) no other family members with this dit name. I've made general searches and I've found no other Poiriers in existence with a 'dit Cayen' attached! Perhaps Philippe, when Theophile was married, had recently been in a military skirmish of some kind?? The family were farmers, and not soldiers by profession (although anyone living in Acadia when it was in existence was practically a soldier just to be able to survive!)

Any insights?

Another interesting document is the next one, which is Theophile's birth record. What makes it particularly interesting is that it doesn't have "Theophile" listed on his birth record! Arg....that one took me a bit to unravel. The only way to discover that this was Theophile was through the process of elimination...No other child born to Jean-Philippe and Mathilde (also named Martine interchangeably on several birth records) Allaire at the same time period. All living and deceased children accounted for and compared with census records (one attached). The challenge remains as I know many of you realize because of the MANY poor transcriptions of the names from both census and religious records. I've included an example of his census record, this one from 1861--again living in St Elzear with parents Philippe and Mathilde and siblings.

Comments?

Pierre Poirier and Adelaide Dion descendants and records.

Hi,
I've a friend who is descended from this family who is interested in a possible family reunion in Manchester New Hampshire. The descendants of Pierre and Adelaide ended up in Manchester, NH (1. Joseph, 2. Stanislas-Odias/Osias/Audias, 3. Henry-Elzear, 4. Esdras 5. Delila/Adelia); Fitchburg, Mass (Theodore); St-Pierre-Baptist, Quebec (Pierre 'Junior'); and Marquette, Michigan (Philias). The girls (1. Marie-Philomine, 2. Delvina, 3. Belzemire) I've not as yet had a chance to check where they ended up (enlighten me on their destination/last residence?) Vermont may have been a destination.

The family started in a small community named St. Elzear. St Elzear was a break off of Ste Marie, Quebec, and was a farming commune (originally part of a fuedal system that ended in the mid 1800's). The Poirier ancestors came there from Beausejour and Port Royal, Acadia in the mid 1700's, where it was so vital for families to defend themselves that the census takers asked if the family owned a gun. Probably due to poor crop/soil, the family (Pierre and Adelaide) ended up moving to St-Pierre-Baptiste, and then some of the kids moved on to Manchester to work for Amoskeag Manufacturing Company--a clothing/mill manufacturer that had grown into the worlds best in the late 1800's. Many French Canadian immigrants ended up in Manchester, NH. Most of Pierre's boys ended up in the masonry/plastering business (also trucking/driving, and railroad engineer). Ever been to Manchester? You can't miss the warm red brick buildings that take up much of the center of the city. Those buildings (and the bricks they were made of) were built by Amoskeag Manufacturing to house the thousands of French Canadian immigrants. I've no doubt the Poiriers' lent a hand in building them. The Poirier's were an industrious working family with many of the wives and children working at the mill as well. I found one Poirier working for Red Arrow Restaurant in 1930, a restaurant known for its good food in Manchester still in operation today--some of you may even have eaten there, :).

Starting in the mid 1880's Pierre and Adelaide's children would hop between St-Pierre-Baptiste and Manchester looking for girls (and guys), work, and eventually some of them staying. In 1898, Theodore followed brother Philias (1897) to Fitchburg where he eventually started his Masonry business. Philias went on to Marquette by 1900, switching from stone mason to railroad engineer. I'm not sure if the oldest, Pierre (Jr) stayed in St-Pierre-Baptiste, but I find Poirier's living there today, and have no record of his leaving. I would love to come in contact with any of the descendants of the kids. You may send me a PM or respond here, or I can send you my email if you wish to respond that way.

125TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF ST-PIERRE-BAPTISTE. While I was writing this thread, I found a five day old article about the upcoming 125th anniversary of St-Pierre-Baptiste. From my research I know that Pierre and Adelaide and kids were original citizens of this village, and this year from June 29th to July 1st, they will celebrate their villages founding! This will include a photo exhibit of the history of the village--which may include photo's of Poiriers'--they will also put on a play, have multiple music performances with the support of 100 local performers with the purpose of musically telling the story of the community, and have a special childrens show. The Canadian government has set aside funds to help St-Pierre-Baptiste celebrate this special occasion. If you go, there is a good chance you'll bump into a distant cousin; you will at least get a vision of the beautiful country in which your great grandparents lived. Here is a link to more information:

http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/909507/government-of-canada-...

Below I've included some record gems and photo's I've found for your enjoyment. Please comment, question, or enlighten! And let me know of your interest in any future re-unions in or near Manchester.

The records are as follows:
1) 1871 Canadian census. This shows Pierre and Adelaide with some of the children. His uncle/godfather is deceased and his aunt (Rose Perault) is living with him. He lives next door to his father Philippe.
2) Pierre and Adelaide's marriage record....Some translation (feel free to translate in a reply)..."Le dix-neuf Julliet mil huit cent cinquant neuf..." That would be, 'The 19th of July, 1859'. The document goes on to say something like...
After the three publications by bans of marriage in the parish of St Elzear between Pierre Poirier, farmer, resident of this parish, the underaged son (under 21) of Philippe Poirier and of Mathilde Allaire, of the first part, and Adelaide Dion ____ resident of this parish, adult daughter (over 21) of Thomas Dion and Theoliste Rousseau (deceased), on the other part....
I think the rest goes something like this...
We, the undersigned priest of St Elzear, recieved consent from the father of the groom (underaged) and mutual consent for marriage and present at the wedding ceremony was Philippe Poirier, father of the groom, and Thomas Dion, father of the bride, ________________, none could sign. (Traditionally parents, witnesses, and the parties involved were asked to sign the wedding record, but most in this time period couldn't.)
3. This next one is a gem, for I believe it's been rarely seen by other researchers. It's Pierre and Adelaide's 1891 Census. They were living in St-Pierre-Baptiste, QC. I know of two brothers of Pierre's living just a few miles east by north east of Pierre at this time (Damase and Theophile, who were not living in the same town). St-Pierre is about 37 miles from St-Elzear to the south by south west. What was so special about St-Pierre-Baptiste? Well first of all, the soil hadn't been tapped for almost 200 years as St-Elzear because it was rather virgin territory for farming, and secondly, it had beautiful maple tree's everywhere! :).

Lastly, I've included links to google maps and photo's so you can see what St-Elzear, St-Pierre-Baptiste, and Manchester is like (Manchester will show you the red brick buildings).

photo's of St-Pierre-Baptiste:
http://www.flickr.com/places/Canada/Quebec/St.-Pierre-Baptis...

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Saint-Elz%C3%A9ar,+QC,+Can...

St-Elzear photos z(one of the countryside and hay wagons I loved):
http://www.flickr.com/places/Canada/Quebec/St.-Elz%C3%A9ar/i...

Based on my research of the census records, this next photo is of a farm house in St Elzear I believe would have been very similar to where Philippe and Mathilde and Pierre and Adelaide lived:
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Saint-Elz%C3%A9ar,+QC,+Can...

Photo of Manchester, NH. I love this next photo the most. It shows three things directly connected to your Poirier ancesters. First, on the right is the Red Arrow Diner where one of the girls worked. The Red Arrow was founded in 1922 by David Lamontagne (a possible relative, I'm checking on that). The web address is here with interesting photos and history:
http://redarrowdiner.com/about.asp
Secondly, on the left is an example of the red brick produced by Amoskeag Manufacturing and than used to build housing and the humongous plant with multiple mills. That building in the photo could have been built by a Poirier or two.
Last, in the back ground is a steep to St Joseph's Cathedral, founded in 1868 (probably because of the French immigrants), and surely sat many a Poirier rear end.

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Manchester+nh&daddr=Re...

I checked St Cesaire because of its close proximity in the area, but wasn't it the origin of Octave's parents as well (was Delphine's parents from another town)? Perhaps a page by page search there. I did check the index but sometimes the priest would make an error on the indexes. In any case, good luck. I don't envy your task. Could they have been married far away? Maybe, but it doesn't seem likely, since the family was right there, right? Still, I know Poiriers who traveled hundreds of miles to meet and marry in Manchester, NH, than travel back to Canada...

Thanks for your help.

We can't go earlyer than 1864 because she was born in 1849 so 15 years old.It suppose to be in Roman catholic church because in the census, they said Roman Catholic but we can never be sure.I presume the marriage date 1869 +or - because on the 1871 cesus they have a first child of 6 months old.The parents of Adelphine lived in Sheffold and i checked all the years between 1864 and 1870 page by page.It is since a long time i search for this marriage.

Hope you checked out the things I found...I'm quiting! :) Its a tough one to find and will take more time than I'm willing to devote. Here is where I checked:

Waterloo, Ste Bernadine
West Shefford/Bromont
Iberville
Ste-Brigide
St Cesaire

I didn't check Episcopalian/Anglican or other churches. I didn't check Bromont before 1864, but that might be a good idea, unless you have a census record telling you within a year or two of when they were married. I did broad searches including all of the US and Canada as I'm sure you have as well. I used every search trick I could think of. Possibly only will be found in a page by page search, which I did only on Waterloo and Bromont.

I noticed that the records of Bromont have the same problem I've experienced elsewhere....the records are out of order, So, "1870" is actually 1869, and so forth....Not all of them, but a few are not right. All original records have the date recorded on the document, so the mistake is easily correctable.

Another child of Delphine Poirier and Octave Huot named Avila Henry Huot, born November 11 1870; baptized the same day.

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=1091&pa...=

In Bromont in 1866, Octave had a another child (if the same Octave), named Louis, with a different mother: Lorrise (sp?) Forant. So he must have married Delphine in another parish between 1867-1870. I'll check with Waterloo....checked Waterloo with no success. Going back to Bromont...

The informations i have;
Octave Huot is the son of Octave Huot and Marie-Louise Forand.
Adelphine Poirier is the daugther of Moyse Poirier and Marie Arcene Elie.
Adelphine (Delphine) is born july 30,1849 and bapt august 5, 1849 in Notre-Dame parish, Granby, QC.

in 1771 Census, Octave Huot and Adelphine Poirier are living
in Farnham,QC. and they have a child 6 month named Henri.
In 1771 Census, The parents of Adelphine Poirier are living in Shefford, Shefford, QC.

The sister of Octave Huot married the brother of Adelphine Poirier nov 22,1869 in West Shefford, QC. (Now Bromont)

The marriage of Octave and Adelphine could be circa 1870 if they have a child (Henri) 6 months in 1871.

I verify all the registers of west Shefford, St-Francois-Xavier parish from 1764 till 1770 and i found no marriage for Octave and Adelphine. If his brother Joseph marriage in 1769 is there, why the Adelphine marriage is not there 6

Octave's death record

Found his Octave's death record dated November 17, 1917 in Bromont, Quebec. He is named as the husband of Adelphine Poirier. Son's Moise and Octave signed the record. He was 74 years old. Not sure when he died, but he was buried the 17th. The record says something like "....l'avast vielle..." which I believe refers to when he died. Is this more than you already had? Do you have Octave's birth record? Do you know where he grew up? Do you have the 1871 census records for them? Where was that?

http://search.ancestry.com/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1091&ii...

Found a couple of possible birth records for him. The first is from St Nicolas, Quebec. His name is Octave Huot Dit St Lauren, born 1844. The second is Joseph Octave Huot of St Cesaire, Quebec, born 1843.

http://search.ancestry.com/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1091&ii...

http://search.ancestry.com/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1091&ii...

Norman Poirier 1930-2011

Norman Poirier, 81, of Merrimack, NH, died at his home on Tuesday, December 13, 2011.
Mr. Poirier was born on March 9, 1930 in Waltham, MA a son of the late Myles and Florence (Doucet) Poirier.
Thank you, Jean. I should have written my request more clearly. Will never begin a thread after 10PM again! LOL
What I am interested in determining is the ancestors of Andre Chiasson and/or Agnes Poirier. Sorry to have written that request in such a vague way. I know better!

Hi, I am a descendant from the Poirier lineage.
I have information on Andre Desroches. His parents are Joseph Desroches (born about 1750 in St. Peters, PEI Canada) and Anne Doucette (born about 1750). His grandparents were Julien Desroches b 1717 Carolles, Normandy France. and Marie Arsenault b 1723 Beaubassin, Acadia, Canada. from there is is Georges Desroches and Jacqueline Hualt - And Marie Poirier and Jacques Arsenault. I don't have sources listed, I believe most of this comes from a lineage that I saw on "The Island Register" a long time ago. Since I am not directly related I didn't continue searching this line. I hope this helps.
Good luck,
Jean

This couple are my g-g-g-g-grandparents. They had many children, and Angelique Chiasson (b. 1802? m. Andre Desroches) is my direct ancestor. I am seeking information about their parents (names, place of birth or residence, etc.). Anyone out there know anything about this family?

PERRY Living in Upstate NY - Originally POIRIER from Canada

Hello,

I am helping my husband's cousin's wife research her genealogy. She doesn't have much to go on, unfortunately. We are looking for her Perry family members and ancestors who now reside in the Broome and Tioga county areas of NY, but were originally from Canada, at which time their last name was Poirier. Her grandfather's name is Robert Leo Perry (born in the 1920s or so) - and she believes her great-grandfather may have been Leo Perry, but she is unsure. Right now, this is all we have to go on. Any ideas or connections? Thanks for reading!

My g-grandmother was Laurie/Laura Poirier/Perry b:1859 d:1896 in Bay City, Michigan. I am not sure but have information that her father was Jean Baptiste Poirier, d: 1897 in Bay City, Michigan. In my grandfather's marriage record, his mother is listed as Laura Perry and his father is listed as Anthony/Anthime Gougeon. Does any of this match anyone in your tree?

I was able to retrieve a copy of b-certificates of four of the children. Marie Rachel (m. Damas Beauchene), who was born somewhere in the U.S. in apr. 1959, and was baptised two years and three months later in St-Timothee, Quebec. Then are the twin sisters Rosalie and Philomene, born on 16 july 1867, St-Timonthee, Quebec. The last one I could find is Angélique married to Antoine Huneault. There's a name George, but could not find anything yet.

However, I am still looking for the date and place of marriage of Rachel Poirier and Damas Beauchene, and her parents Moise Poirier and Rachel Gauthier.

If anyone has information in regards to this lineage of Poirier family to let me know.

Parents of Philomene Poirier Paradise of Tomahawk, WI

I'm searching for my Great Grandmother Philomene "Tille" Poirier's lineage. She was born in Quebec around July 1865, married Alexander Paradise about 1881 (in Canada or Michigan?), they had 11 children and resided in Tomahawk, WI until her death before 1920. I have been searching over a year now including the Quebec Drouin Collection baptismal records (there are many Philomene Poirier's). All leads for her parents have come to a dead end and I finally realized I have to ask for help. Does anyone have a lead for me? Thanks.
