Is anyone researching the Polk and/or Polke (even Poke!) surname in Co. Mayo, Ireland?

I have recently discovered that my 5x Great Grandfather, John Rogers, married a Mary Polke, of Rathcash, Killala, Co. Mayo on 1 January 1771 in Killala Church of Ireland Church.

I think she is the Mary Rogers who died in 1798 in Killala, Co. Mayo.
Forgot to add that it was on the Portal to Texas History site from UNT at Denton. It is difficult to find any obits for Palo Pinto County since the Mineral Wells newspaper was burned before early 1950's, but some obits are found in the Stephens County and Young County town newspaper. The Stephens County newspaper archives are free on the Portal to Texas History site.

I am looking for info on Araminda Polk, whom I believe may have married a Shewmaker. She is the daughter of R.G. & Frances (Fanny) Joiner Polk who married in Burnet Co., TX. Araminda was born in 1874 or 1875 and had a brother named James Andrew (Drew) Polk. Can't find any birth info except Indian Territory (TX or OK?). She must have married a Shewmaker or Shoemaker & died prior to 1900 because there's an Ernest Shewmaker listed on the 1900 census living with Drew Polk listed as his nephew. Ernest Shewmaker was born about 1896 or 1897. Don't know if Araminda died giving birth or what happened to her for her son to go to live with his grandmother & uncle in San Saba Co., TX. Araminda was living in Parker Co. TX on the 1880 census (5 yrs. old).

I am looking for info on my great-grandfather, G. R. Polk who was born in either Alabama or Georgia. I have no idea what the initials stand for or if that is all he was named. His son (my grandfather, James Andrew Polk) was born in Indian Territory, OK. He also had a daughter named Araminda Polk. He was married to Frances (or Francis) "Fanny" or "Fannie" C. Joiner. All the census info on her show her to be a widow, and they lived in San Saba Co, TX.
UPDATE----Marriage certificate has him listed as R.G. Polk. He married Fanny in 1872 and head the two children. By 1880, Fanny was a widow, but I can't find any info on how or when he died. Fanny & the 2 children were living with W. T. Cook according to he 1880 census.

Francis M. Polk

I am looking for more information on Francis M. Polk; probably Francis Marion Polk b. 1858 Snyder Co., Pennsylvania. He is with family Nelson Polk, Margaret Dreibelbis (mother and father) in the 1860 census for Snyder Co., PA and the 1870 census for Clear Creek, Cooper Co., Missouri but I do not find him in 1880 census with the family. He is old enough to be on his own at this time or he has possibly passed? If you have any information please contact me at n_polk@msn.com.

In the 1900 census Margaret says she had nine children and five are living. I know the names of seven from census data and I am guessing that the two names I do not know died as infants or very small children. Francis' sister Lelia marries Florence H. Watson and she passes with the birth of her second child in June 1887 so that leaves one child that has passed before 1900. There are two that I do not have much information for Francis mentioned above and William b.1870 in Clear Creek, Cooper Co., Missouri. So out of those two it could be either one that has died before the 1900 census. If you are related or just interested in helping me solve the mystery please contact me at the above email or here on ancestry. I have the tree with these folks on Rootsweb under Pollocks and Polk of Eastern Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Missouri. Thanks for any help you can provide.
Nicole Polk

Re: James K. Polk and grandnephew Pascal Polk

Hi Lillian,

Hope you're still reading messages here. I know this is an older post but I found some info for you in regards to your Pascal Polk' mystery..

I found an obituary online that seems highly likely that it connects to the Pascal Polk you mentioned...
I'm not going to quote it word for word but the deceased is an Imogene Wilma Polk, born 12/31/1920 Mason Co., TX, that died 2/22/1998 Llano Co., TX. Polk was her maiden name but she retained it for personal reasons.

The article says preceding her in death was her sister, Alberta Polk Stovall Avery; and brothers, Roscoe Morris Polk, Benjamin Franklin Polk, James Luther Polk, Lloyd Robinson Polk and Woodrow Wilson Polk. Survivors include her husband, Errol Hodges of Llano; three stepsons, Benny Hodges of San Antonio, and Errol Lynn 'Rusty' Hodges and Ronnie Hodges, both of Llano; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Nathan (Connie Beth) Garrett of Tow; ONE BROTHER, JOHN PASCAL PPOLK of Llano; nine grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. Imogene was the daughter of Lorenzo Dow Polk and Cora Elizabeth Capps; granddaughter of Albert Pascal Cumberland Polk and Hannah Jones, John Stanton Capps and Elizabeth Wilson; and great-granddaughter of William Ransom Capps and Eliza Jane Jones and Sylvester Walker Polk and Sarah Jane Large.

I did a broad search through the censuses for John Pascal Polk's great grandfather, Sylvester Polk and found only one in the whole country in 1860, that being in Muddyfork Twp., Pike Co., Arkansas, living beside who I believe is the family of his brother and also his parents:

#299 Polk, Sylvester, 24 yrs old, born ARK
, S.J. (Sarah Jane?), 22, born TX
, J.W., male, 3 , b. ARK
, D.V., femaale, 1/12, b. ARK

#300 Polk, Taylor Jr., 20, b. ARK
, M.A., 19, b. Mississippi
, L.V., 1/12, b. ARK

#301 Polk, Taylor Sr., 56, born TENN.
, Prudy, 55, b. Louisiana
, P.A., 17, female, b. ARK
, Alford, 13, b. ARK
, Sylvester, 5, b. TX

Searching for earlier records of John Pascal Polk's apparent great great grandfather, Taylor Polk Sr., I found whom I believe could be John Pascal Polk's, 3rd great grandfather, Taylor Polk on the 1800 census for York Co., SC, residing beside a John Polk and a Charles Polk; the John Polk being old enough to be the father of the Taylor and Charles Polk.

I hope this gives you some good information to start with. Good luck in your research.

Becki
beckipavlik@hotmail.com

Polk Family and Kinsmen is actually available to read online but I can't remember exactly where I found it. Try the us.archives.org and search for it from there. I printed off the entire book for research purposes for myself (over 100 pages or so) and put it in a three ring notebook. Some of these older publications are just impossible to get your hands on.
This book as well as all the older Polk/Pollock publications to my knowledge has alot of invaluable information in it but also errors proven by modern day researchers backed up by the technology of DNA.

Jumping on this bandwagon (although some two years later) I would like to add that I had the DNA of my uncle, James Polk of Washington Court House, OH tested last summer, which confirms the connection of my 7th ggrandfather, Capt. Wm. Polk of Accomack Co., VA to the Robert and Magdalen Tasker Polk lineage.

If any Polks or Pollocks have any doubt (which frankly they surely should with all the errors being found in the older Polk publications) as to which of the numerous Polk/Pollock clans they belong to, I strongly urge them to have the DNA of one of the males in their family tested. Its a simple cheek swab that could easily put to rest many, many years of what could actually turn out to be just family hearsay about your heritage. We desperately need your help via DNA to right the errors in our Polk/Pollock history.

Becki

Hi, I hope I can get ahold of you as your post is a few years old. By any chance do you have a will for Michael or Mary (the son of Wm. and Fereby)? What I am researching a slave named Smart Polk. Do you know anything of him? He was left in a will from Capt. Charles Polk to William Polk. By the 1860 census he is a free man living next to C. W. Polk (Michael and Mary's son). I am trying to find out who freed him and what became of him and his wife Patsy, in addition did they have kids. Not that it matters but I am not black but he has puzzled me since I first read Capt.Charles' will. thank you Cathy

Thomas Polk was born around 1838 and married Mary Jane Oliver.

Also looking for information regarding James K Polk (born around 1846) and Isac Polk (born around 1849). Per the 1850 Census, they were living with my gggg grandmother Elizabeth Hendrix (maiden name of House).
Hi Kelli,

I think we might have corresponded privately since we posted these messages in 2002, but I wanted to try to touch base with you again as I couldn't find your email address.
I've done literally hundreds of hours of research since then on our Polk line and have made some very interesting discoveries. Please contact me at beckipavlik at hotmail.

In the meantime, I can tell you that modern day researchers and the technology we have at our disposal such as microfilms of actual court and church records, online databases and census records of the same, as well as DNA testing has proven that almost all of the older Polk publications have many errors in them. People are only human and as such are prone to make mistakes.

One of the puzzles that has been unraveled is that there was no such person as Jugurtha Hugg, nor was the John Polk that was married to Joanna Knox ever married to a Hugg as noted in 'Polk Family and Kinsmen', which information W. H. Polk reports came from the 1849 Polk tree.
The records of the Old Monie Church, Dame's Quarter, Somerset Co., prove who John Polk's first wife was, as indicated in the birth records of his children:

William Polk, son of John Polk, born of Jane, 11 July 1695.
Ann Polk, daughter of John Polk, born of Jane, 27 January 1698.
John Polk, son of John Polk, born of Jane, 22 October, 1700.

The latter John Polk died a week after his birth and his mother Jane, the day before on October 28, 1700.

John Polk (husband of Joanna Knox) died in the Spring of 1708 as evidenced by the guardianship appointment of his brother William for the care of his two remaining children, William and Ann, on March 10th. In August of that year, his 'widow Polke brought into Court a servant' and the court clerk noted her as 'Joanna Polke'.

Joanna Knox Polk remarried 2nd to a Thomas Hugg, which must be how the whole Jugurtha Hugg thing started somehow.

Hi Bob,

I have the Estella Polk you mentioned in my database. She was the daughter of William P. and Ellen Polk, the granddaughter of Hugh Polk and Jereter Fields, great granddaughter of James Polk and Elizabeth Hutchinson and great, great granddaughter of Capt. William Polk and Sabra Bradford.
I don't have any more info on Estella or Oliver Larmore other than they died in Henry County, IN. I'm guessing that his surname is supposed to be LARIMORE instead of Larmore. You might check the censuses for that surname instead. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Becki
beckiblair@hotmail.com
