Alfred Rufus Pollard (1840-1861)

Hello
I am not a Pollard researcher but I found this tombstone in the Thornton-Newsom-Holtzclaw-Bunkley Cemetery in Union Point, Greene County Georgia. There is a book of Greene County Cemetery inscriptions but this marker was missed.

Alfred Rufus, son of S J & M C Pollard born Aug 16, 1840; died from an accidental discharge of a pistol in his own hand Aug 22, 1861.

One online source indicates that his parents were Seaborn J Pollard Jr & Martha C Ferguson. I believe Seaborn Jr was a brother to your Sarah Pollard-Edmonds.

Many, many thanks for your having originally posted Julia's Will and for your VERY DETAILED REPLY which makes me think of Paul Harvey when he says "Now you know the rest of the story!" as you certainly shared very interesting info. It is obvious there were some complicated relationships within the family but you have certainly helped clarify them for which I'm most grateful.
Don Houk in Tokyo

Re: Will of Julia ann Pollard Malone Carter, Wake Co., NC

Descendants of Major Pollard

Generation No. 1

1. MAJOR1 POLLARD was born in prob. Virginia, and died Aft. 1815 in prob. Wake Co., NC. He married ELIZABETH SORRELL Bef. 1808 in North Carolina, daughter of THOMAS SORRELL and JULIA ?. She was born Abt. 1781 in Virginia1,2, and died Aft. 1860 in prob. Wake Co., NC2.

Notes for MAJOR POLLARD:
A Major Pollard (Major was a name, not a title) appears in the 1790 and 1800 censuses for Wake County, North Carolina. There is no reference to him in either 1810 or 1820. However, a Major Pollard appears in 1830, age 30-40, and again in 1840, age 40-50. Could this be Major Pollard, Jr.?

Notes for ELIZABETH SORRELL:
Elizabeth Sorrell Pollard apparently reverted to her maiden name, Sorrell, after teh death of her husband. She appears in Wake County, North Carolina censuses as Elizabeth Sorrell 1830-1860.

Children of MAJOR POLLARD and ELIZABETH SORRELL are:
2.	i.	JULIA ANN2 POLLARD, b. 1808, North Carolina; d. Bet. May 23, 1853 - December 31, 1953, Wake Co., NC.
3.	ii.	RHODA POLLARD, b. 1809, North Carolina; d. Aft. 1860.
iii.	POLLY POLLARD, b. 1815, Dist., Wake, NC3; d. Aft. 18504.

Generation No. 2

2. JULIA ANN2 POLLARD (MAJOR1) was born 1808 in North Carolina5,6, and died Bet. May 23, 1853 - December 31, 1953 in Wake Co., NC7,8,9. She married (1) CALEB MALONE Aft. February 20, 1829 in Wake Co., NC10, son of DAVID MALONE and AGGIE ANDERSON. He was born 1802 in North Carolina11, and died 1848 in Wake Co., NC11. She married (2) JORDAN CARTER Bet. 1848 - 1850 in Prob. Wake Co., NC12. He was born Abt. 1816 in North Carolina13, and died Aft. 186013.

Notes for JULIA ANN POLLARD:
Julia A. Pollard married as her second husband Jordan Carter; her tombstone reads Julia A. Carter Malone. Jordan and Julian Carter and son Augustus appear in the 1850 Census for Raleigh, Wake, NC. Augustus Malone Carter is not mentioned in her will, so he may have been her second husband's son.

Notes for CALEB MALONE:
A Caleb Malone appears as head of household in the 1830 census for Saint Marie's, Wake County, NC with one male age 30-40 and one male age 20-30. There is only one female in the household, age 20-30. A Caleb Malone household appears again in Raleigh, Wake Co., NC in 1840 with one male age 30-40 and one female age 30-40; this is likely the same Caleb as the 1830 census.

Caleb Malone's will is dated August 7, 1848. In it he refers to "Caswile Pollard, Abergile Pool's children, and James Malone". These would likely be his nephew, sister and brother. A suit was later brought against the estate of Caleb Malone by John Pool and Wife, questioning whether the will was indeed Caleb's last will and testament. The jury ruled in favor of the executrix, Julia A. Malone, finding that the "paper writing is and doth contain the last will and testament of Caleb Malone". The inventory of his estate includes "the following Negroes to wit Anteny Sally Burlins Jerry Caroline and Henry". Abigail Malone married John Pool 3/3/1831 in Orange County, NC.

Notes for JORDAN CARTER:
Jordan Carter is living unmarried in a boarding house in Raleigh, NC in 1860. I have been unable to find him in later censuses.

Child of JULIA POLLARD and CALEB MALONE is:
i.	AUGUSTUS MALONE3 CARTER, b. 1847, North Carolina14,15; d. Aft. 1900, prob. Wake Co., NC16; m. (1) ANN ELIZA ?, Bef. 1870, Prob. Wake Co., NC17; b. Abt. 1845, North Carolina18; d. Bet. 1880 - 189418,19; m. (2) AMMA ?, 1894, Prob. Wake Co., NC20; b. 1849, North Carolina20; d. Aft. 190021.

Notes for AUGUSTUS MALONE CARTER:
Augustus Malone's name was changed to Carter after his mother married her second husband, Jordan Carter.

3. RHODA2 POLLARD (MAJOR1) was born 1809 in North Carolina22, and died Aft. 186023. She met BERRY SURLS. He died 1842 in Wake Co., NC24,24.

Notes for RHODA POLLARD:
Rhoda Pollard, with Berry Surls as guarantor, filed for a bastady bond on March 24, 1826. This year corresponds to the birthdate of Caswell Pollard, who Berry Surl acknowledges as his son in his will. Berry may also have been the father with Rhoda of John Pollard, who Berry also calls his son in his will. Rhoda and Berry did not marry. "Rhody" Pollard was living with her mother and her sister Polly in Wake County at the time of the 1850 census.

Children of RHODA POLLARD and BERRY SURLS are:
i.	CASWELL3 POLLARD, b. 182625,26; d. February 1908.
ii.	JOHN POLLARD, b. Abt. 1824, Wake Co., NC.

Notes for JOHN POLLARD:
John Pollard was the illegitimate son of Berry Surls and Rhoda Pollard. John was apprenticed to Berry Surls, but in 1838 his mother petitioned the court to end the apprenticeship, accusing Surls of neglecting and abusing the boy. Berry Surls acknowledged John as his son in his will.

Endnotes

1. 1850 Census, NW Dist., Wake, NC.
2. 1860 Census, NW Dist., Wake, NC.
3. 1850 Census, NW.
4. 1850 Census, NW Dist., Wake, NC.
5.
Hello Donald, I see you are missing a Benjamin Pollard from KY and I have a Benjamin who came from Colony, Laurel, KY to Prince Edward Isle and married in 1782 and started a family there. I am at a road block with Benjamin, because he just shows at 1757 Colony KY. I do not believe this to be a birth date as he would have been 14 at the time of marriage. Do you have any more information? Thank, Dana

I believe that he married Lillian in Alabama (?) because she was living in Athens or courtland, AL when her husband Shiloh Horton was killed by police in 30's in courtland. While he was killed long ago, there has never been any talk that Shiloh was Black but I have not found a White Shiloh. Shiloh and lillian had 2 kids: Ann Tyson and Hilary.
Pollards are found in England and Ireland. My Pollard ancestors were from County Tipperary, a small town called Ballingarry in the southern part of Tipperary. There are many Pollard families still living in this area.

I found my great grandparents marriage record in the Church of the Assumption located in Ballingarry. The year was 1842.

Pauline

Hi Diane,

Thanks! I found both volumes in the Denver Public Library. I spent an extensive amount of time on Sunday looking through the books, but did not find anyone who seemed to link up to my lineage. I need to go back one more generation and then I KNOW something will connect. Unfortunately, I am stuck on John Pollard born 1810, who married Permelia Ivey in 1833. If I could just find his parents!
Michelle

Hi Diana,
I have traced my Pollard family to 1833 in Greensville, VA where John Pollard married Permelia Ivey. Do you have any for this line and beyond that period of time? I would love to find John's family.
Thanks,
Michelle Pollard Hektor

Have you tried contacting the church of the Assummption in Ballingarry southern Tipperary? Since you have the birth dates it should be easy to find the records of their baptisms in that church. I have been to the church and was able to obtain my g grandparents marriage and the baptism rcords of their two oldest children born in 1846 and 1848. They were William, James and Thomas Pollard. This family emigrated to Ontario Canada.

Pauline

Thanks for clarifying that you are searching for POLLARD family in the U.K. I mentioned that a Mary Ann who might be same person you were looking for was born 1854 in state of Kentucky so it's obvious there is no connection, at least not to my line that was already in state of Virginia by late 1700's..........Good luck with your search.
Don Houk in Tokyoi

Please let us know where your grandmother, dau/of Mary Ann Pollard & William Alma Pugh, was born or where your mother was born as some Pollard researchers have large databases with info on many POLLARD families. I have a Mary Ann Pollard born 3-24-1858-Adair Co., KY without any marriage info who could be a potential match for your Mary Ann even though you say your Mary was born 1856 as my date could be wrong.
Looking forward to hearing from you with further info.
Don Houk

Which child do you descend from?

It would be lovely to add your info to my tree if you are keen to share. I have done a fair bit of research since my post in 2003, and filled out the family a fair bit.

I must admit I haven't really searched much on Ancestry for this family, have you got your tree on there? If so I will have a look :)

Jenny

Gwen,

I replied to the Post of "gaframer" and asked him how he connects to the Pollard family as his Post listed the names of the children of Edward Varner Pollard, Jr. & Nancy Moore, John's great-grandparents.

I know that your are connected to Edward Varner Pollard, Sr. & Thairsa "Thursa" Pettus. Emily S. A. John's (my husband) line is William Isaac "Doc" Pollard & Cynthia Adeline Simmons. Their daughter, Rebecca Jane Pollard, was married 3 times; G. W. Adcock was her 3rd marriage, 17 Sept 1931.
1st husband - George D. Sparkman, 15 Nov 1897
2nd husband - Charlie T.
Thought so, I live in Cornwall now and recognised the surname.
My Pollards were more in the Tydd St Mary, Sutton St James, Guyhirn and Spalding areas. Thomas was a harness maker in Tydd St Mary where his father was the local headmaster.
Interestingly Thomas' wife Hannah Cartwright's family were shopkeepers and her father William was a grocer and draper in Sutton St James.
Thomas' older brother William (born in Rutland) was a newspaper owner/editor in Hemel Hempstead and married into the Provost family of Gedney Hill. His grandson was the Rev Harry Postlethwaite Pollard who left the Pollard Bursary at Kings College London. My lot weren't so prestigious I hasten to add!
I believe my grandmother used to visit the Pollards (her aunt Kate Stennett nee Pollard)in Spalding in the 1940s but most of them had moved away from the area well before then.
Probably more than you needed to know :) but if you need any help just let me know won't you.
All the best
Jane

Hi,

I have attached a photo of the shop owned by the Pollard brothers (very blurred though I am afraid). The Pollard Bro's shop is next door (to the right) of Stevens Bros.

My brother has also found some photos that may be of interest.

It would be lovely to get some information for your mother wouldn't it. I will have a look around for you when I have more time later today. I seem to recall there was a site -something like Fenland resources -but leave it with me and I will see what I can come up with.
It took me a while to put everything together when I started but there's much more available now so it shouldn't take you long to get something concrete.
Till later then
Jane

Hi,

That is interesting, thanks for the response. My mother was wondering about where the Pollards came from before they moved to Wisbech. So I need to pursue this a bit more.

You sound like you are way further along than I am. What resouces did you find helped most with your research? Did you find any sites/places to go to get any old photos from that era. It would be so great to find some more photos of the shop. The other side of my mother's family is the Leaches and they owned and operated the mill in Wisbech. With my mum turning 80 this year I would love to see if I could dig a photo or two.

David

If your Horace is the draper in 1901 then he originates from Norfolk. I don't have a Horace in my line which originates from Robert Pollard, a schoolmaster born 1787 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Robert did have a couple of brothers who I haven't been able to follow down the line so I will have a look at the Norfolk Pollards to see if there might be any connection. I doubt it but it's worth a look.
Thanks for posting
Best wishes
Jane

Hi,

I am researching my mothers background and came across your post. My mother's maiden name is Pollard and she originates from Wisbech. Her father's name was Tom Pollard and his parents were Horace and Isobel Pollard. The Pollard brothers had a haberdashery in the main square in Wisbech.

David
