Pollen surname - Genetic Study

Hello,

I am organising a Y-DNA surname project for all European surnames that have the P-L-N pattern, including Pollen, Polin, Polen etc. Many of these are found in Ireland and France for instance.

The huge variation in spelling conventions (or lack of conventions!) has made traditional genealogy based on documentary evidence very difficult, even where a paper trail exists. The science of Y-chromosome marker analysis offers a new chance to discover links between and origins of this class of surnames.

For this, I need males with relevant surnames to be DNA tested (via a painless, self-administered mouth swab!).
If you are interested, please contact me at dna@pelan.org .

Thanks.

Re: Susan Balshaws query dated 7th August 2004.
I believe that your grandfather Albert Edward and my grandfather Ernest Alfred, were brothers.
I too am having difficulty finding Arthur in Arran, Ireland.
He was a Police Inspector at the time of my grandfather's marriage.
I have only recently started to research my family tree and I see that your query is dated 2004, so I'm hoping that you still browse this site.
I will keep my fingers crossed that we make contact.
Regards,
Lynne
Pollen's from Ireland

My grandfather was Albert Edward Pollen (born London 1885).
His father was Arthur Pollen born in Ireland in 1851. Census states he was born in Arran bit I am having trouble finding out anything about him when he was in Ireland . He was married in 1873 to Sarah Wall in London. Arthur died in 1899 aged 48. Arthur was a policeman at the time of the 1881 census.

Sarah was born in Shepton Mallet, Somerset in 1852.

From their marriage certificate Arthur's father was Joseph Pollen. It does not state his mothers name.

Arthur and Sarah had other children:
Arthur T Pollen b. 1874
Rose Ann Pollen b. 1875
Ernest Pollen b.1880
Delana Pollen b.1881
Gilbert Pollen b. 1882
Herbert Pollen b. 1885
William Pollen b. 1887
Florence Pollen b. 1888
Mable Pollen b. 1890

If there is anyone out there who has any information on any of the above I would really like to hear from you.

Thanks, Sue.

Hi Lisa,
I'm not sure if our families could be related, but my family is very german and from the state of Missouri. My father tells me that he thinks the name was spelled differently at one time. My grandfather was Herman Pollien who was born in 1903 and died when I was a baby in 1958. I'm not sure of his siblings, but can check it out. The Pollien's had a farm in Lincoln county MO before the depression, and a family grave yard that is still standing. Please let me know if any of this sounds familiar to you.
Thanks,
Susan
