Hi,
I posted a message earlier in 2011 requesting information about the Pomfrey/Pumphrey lineage. I noticed that Eveline has noted that she has details about this family line. If you do not mind, could you contact me so that we might discuss sharing current and past information. I am fascinated with all the family history I have uncovered so far. It pleases me greatly to find that I and my American family are descended from the English people,on both the paternal and maternal sides. I look forward to any contact from others also researching this family.

Thank you,
Dave Pumphrey

Hi Mark

Thank you for your input and I am sorry I took so long to answer, but I was doing my volunteer work all day yesterday.

I have a lot of the details from the Pumphrey History which was given to me by my husband's family some time ago, but nothing further back than John 1410 as set out in the Pumfrey Pedigree.

My husband is descended from Elizabeth Pyper Weale through her son Richard Pomfrey alias Weale. I agree with Larry Pumphrey that it is the best possible fit, not only from the details in his book, but added to different parish records, I was able to find. I did not find as many as he did and I couldn't find the will at Hereford Records office, but did find enough to think that it was most probably correct. I worked backwards from George born at Tewkesbury in 1610 who married in Hill Croome and as far as I can tell, everything I found tallies with the book.

I have also done a lot of work on the family of James Pomfrey son of Richard which is Lynn's family. I had all the earlier ones and with help from Lynn and another of James descendants, I have taken James family down to John Lovell Pomphrey born 1820 who married Jane Hodges and had 4 children. Lynn has obviously started with herself, so has even more modern Pomphreys. You do not say which branch of the family you are from, is it from the Newnham ones, or perhaps from the London and East Coast Pumphreys.

My husband has a fifth cousin who is of the belief that as most of the English Pumfreys either lived on the coast or along rivers, that perhaps there are related in some way, ie. the early Pumfreys in Gloucestershire came from the East Coast or maybe even the other way around. I have not found any earlier ones from either side of Britain.

Regards

Eveline

Hi, A family historian from California, Larry Pumphrey, has published a book called The Pumphrey Pedigree, in which he traces our ancestry and all of its branches back to John Pomfrey of Newnham, whose dates are estimated to be 1410-1472, based on the following earliest reference found to the Pomfrey family in England: "18 November 1472. Executors of the will of John Pomfrey of the parish of Newnham, to wit: Agnes, his widow and William Pomfrey of Little Dean." Larry Pumphrey believes that William was John Pomfrey's son and that Agnes was John Pomfrey's wife. The book contains 664 pp. plus an index, but only the first 31 pp. cover the English Pomfreys, plus a brief index. This first section of the book does include mention of the Weale alias Pomfrey and Pomfrey alias Weale ancestors. The book was available directly from the author for $50 (US)and may be still in print. Larry Pumphrey's address is: 1147 W. Koleeta Drive,
Harbor City, California 90710.

If anyone has any information about Pomfreys in England (or Wales) prior to 1410, I am very interested in your information. Thank you.

Mark Pumphrey
El Paso, Texas
mpumphrey@elp.rr.com

HiEveline, this is the only way i can explain the way i worked out the connection so here goes;stoke bishop, westbury on trym gloucestershire;George Pomphrey born 1706 married Marth Lovell, thier children John Lovell Pomphrey born 1738 died abt1762 occ curate, son Matthew Pomphrey born 1754 died abt 1791 occ curate, daughter Martha Pomphrey born 1st april1735 married Ralph Dyer occ Attorney of Bristol,Daughter Mary Pomphrey born 12th july 1737.Daughter Elizabeth Pomphrey born 1748 ,married William Bullock in 1770,Daughter Jane Pomphrey born 1749 married Joseph Austin born 1750.son george Pomphrey born 1733 married Sarah Lewis in 1793 Portishead North Somerset ,he was from st James Bristol, she was from well's.thier children were George Lewis Pomphrey born 1793 he married three times 1st to Sarah Johnson, second to diana Brain, thirdto Sarah Holmes.son Matthew Pomphrey born 1794 married Marth Pritchard.Son William Pomphrey born 1796 married Mary Atherton,Our Lineage.Daughter Martha Pomphrey marriedJoesph Atherton....Matthew Pomphrey that married Martha Pritchard thier children have the Lovell and Austin names which confirms the connection with George and Marta Pomphrey of the early 1700's...Now my concern is thier son George died 1807 around the age of 35 to 40which dont add up unless thier's an error Sarah was born 1770 i'm assuming they were abt the same age i have thier wedding cert but no mention of age on it when George died Sarah remarried to a Thomas Barron of London ,she died 1822.The reason i dont have thier Baptism's is that in early 1700's to late mid 1700's the record's in the Bristol office are not in order and i would have to go thier to search them through, unfortunatly i am of poor health at present and unable to make the journey .I have also an interest in Martha Lovells side she was the niece of John Lovell Clerk and godson to Thomas Barrow of Minster oxfordshire,John Lovell left Land to Martha and his nephew John Watts in Portishead ,i have nothing on her family side but i have a feeling she may come from a family of baroncey and i would love to know the story should this be the case, so you see why i would love to get this sorted so as to know i'm following the right line .Well once again i hope i have'nt done your head in with me going on and on as i do luv the mystery of it all, thank you again for trying to help where possible.Lynn.

Hi Lynn

The gaps. When I wrote my name and supplier, I left gaps between my name, the 183, the @bt internet. all you have to do is write it all in the e.mail box with no gaps whatsoever.

My husband is descended from the Pumfreys at Upton on Severn who we have traced back through various spellings of the name to Richard Pomfrey born 1470 who married Elizabeth Pyper Weale in 1510. Your family are also descended from Richard but James the son of his first wife (whose name we are not sure of).

Eveline

Hi Lynn
If you don't here from me in the next few days or so, please be patient. My friend has family illness at the moment and cannot cope with both. She is intrigued though and has asked me to send everything to her and she will look at it as soon as she can. In the meantime, here is my e.mail address. It might be easier for you to send anything direct rather than through ancestry. I am going to put yours in a separate family file on my family tree program to see how it pans out, so if I could have yours as well that would be great, all you need is to send an e.mail below. I am having to put a gap in so it passes Ancestry security, you will need to close the gaps.
evelineclarke 183 @ btinternet.com
Eveline

Hi Lynn

I have read your e.mail with interest and it all seems to tie in with what we had up to Matthew as we had him dying before 1718. However, we have not found that death and what you have shows that you have put in many hours of hard work.

Just a couple of questions.
1. Do you have an actual baptism date for George c 1770?
2. Do you have a marriage date for George born 1733
3. Did George born 1770 have any elder siblings
4. Why do you think there is another Generation, the gap is only 37 years, which would mean both had to be married at 18 years old.

The gap could be explained by a late marriage for George born 1733 and older siblings for George born 1770.
Eveline

Hi Lynn

I have looked at my notes and have also been nudged by my friend. She is happy to do some digging for you, but she needs to know a little more. We are wondering if you are doubtful about the gap between the 2 George's and 60 is a bit old to get married for the first time, just how you managed to link back to Matthew at Newnam.

Our problem is that as far as we have been able to ascertain, the Pomfrey line finished with Matthew dying unmarried sometime before 1718. As Hester died that year and she was the last remaining of this family line. We have not managed to find out what happened to the Newnham home which had been passed down through the eldest male in an unbroken line from 1472.

We do know that the Pumfrey/Pomfrey family of Newnham spread up and down the River Severn, so it is most probably that you do link back to that family but we need to find exactly where you fit in.

Any extra info you can give us would be a great help.

Eveline
Hi Lynn

Now that looks much more promising. Can you give me some dates please.

I might have your family in the tree. I have a Matthew christened Newman 18th December 1631 married to Hester Witt. Matthew died in 1680. Hester died 1690. 7 children the last two both being Matthew, the first dying at 4 months old. The second Matthew christened 1678 not sure when he died, but we have before 1718, but that could be incorrect. Especially as he is the right age to be the father of your George born

Matthew Snrs father was Phillip born 3rd May 1584, I know he was married to Mary but not the surname, so if it is your Phillip and Mary you have helped us as well. If this is the family, we join together back in 1510.
Eveline

Hi Lynn
I don't have your George in the tree but, although Julie and I have gone back to the 1500s (mainly Julie's hard work), and we do have a lot of side shoots, I haven't put all the detail on to the tree, I started finding it cumbersome. However, I know Julie has it in some sort of order (whether or not it is on a family history file with a search engine I am not sure). She did send me all the details which I saved to my computer, but when it crashed I lost nearly everything.

I will write and ask her today.

Eveline

Hi David
Sorry I am late in replying, but Ancestry (very unusual for them) did not tell me that anyone had replied to my thread. Unfortunately, you didn't put the year that your Richard was born (or even a circa date, I have 9 Richards in the family tree, so I am not sure which one you are interested in.

I am also in touch with someone who has done a huge study of the Pumfreys in Gloucestershire and surrounding counties, so even if I can't help perhaps she can.

Hello,
My name is David Pumphrey. I live in Akron, Ohio, USA.
I saw your post concerning the name Pomfrey. I have done some genealogical research and I believe that my family may be descended from a Richard Pomfrey of Newnham, England, born in 1470. Could you please advise as to whom I should contact in the UK, if not you, to gather further information regarding the Pomfrey lineage. I would be very grateful.

Thank you,
David Pumphrey

Hi Dennis,
Just saw your message. I was looking up information regarding my granduncle and found out that he was married to your aunt. Your grandparents, Michael and Margaret Pomfrey, had a daughter, Margaret. She was born in Boston about 1904 and died in 1942. We are still trying to find her birth record. She married my granduncle, Patrick J. Thornton, in 1924. We are still gathering information regarding their family, so we will look up the Pomfrey's while we are at it. Do you know if your grandparents have any other children? And do you know if your grandparents came from Ireland with any other relatives? I'll get back to you when we find out more. You can email me at ba_bush_ka@hotmail.com
Talk to you later. Your cousin by marriage,
Debbie

Hi and how are you? Remember when i mentioned having a certificate concerning thePomphrey name? Well ive looked it up through my library, and it does seem to agree with its origen being Welsh. Basically it says that Pomphrey comes from Pumphrey which came from ap Humphrey (ap is Welsh for "son of") Then of course are the other forms of the name, such as Pomfrey.
Say Nicola, would you mind if i asked for your Email address? I find it easier to read messages that way. Please write me, i love to hear from you, and it doesnt have to be about family names. It would be nice just to exchange friendly letters. Ill be leaving now so take care and hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Nichola, So you're in England? Id love to go there someday, always have. From what i remember, my great-grandfather came from Bristol. Once i sent for a heraldry certificate and background on our name. It said it developed in Wales, coming from the Welsh "ap humphrey". Do you know anything about this? I grew up wondering whether i could consider myself of Welsh or English ancestery. Even Scottish, since i read that the name was taken there. It said there was a Pomfrey who was a burgess of Lanark in the 1600's. I wish my scanner was working, so i could send you photos of where i live in New York. You seem to love to travel as much as i do! Well, i have to go for now. Please write again, i love to hear from you.
Sincerly, Herbert
