Philadelphia Pomroys

I'm looking for information on my Pomroy family that lived in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. My ancestors are listed below:

Laura Marie Pomroy (1920-1972)
Her parents: Harry Pomroy (1898-1966) & Marie Buckner

Harry's Parents: Harry F. Pomroy (1861-1925) & Elizabeth Batchelor (1875-1932)

Harry F.'s Parents: John Pomroy Sr. (1828-1901) & Eliza Phillips (1836-1909)

John Sr. was also a Civil War Veteran and fought at Gettysburg. He, Eliza and several of their other relatives are buried at North Cedar Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA. I also am intrested in any information on Marie Buckner or her family. I'm not sure where she was born but I'm sure she died in Philadelphia. He outlived her husband by several years as well. She may have passed some time in the early 1980's.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Laura Garcia's parents were Marie Buckner and Harry Pomroy according to her death record. I was told by my relatives that Laura also had 2 brothers who may have served in WWII. One of her brothers was Fred and the other the family referred to as "Babe" but his given name may have been Charles. Laura is buried in Greenmount Cemetery and died in June of 1972 at Temple hospital in Philadelphia. From what I understand, all of her family was from Pennsylvania.

I am the gggranddaughter of Sanford Pomroy who was the son of Milton and Mary Ann Bolton. My uncle gave me a copy of the family bible where some history is written. Milton Pomroy was born 12/25/1816 in Waterford Canada West (not sure what the west means). He married Mary Ann Bolton 9/8/1839 (assuming in Canada). Mary Ann was born 3/24/1823 in Broughton England. Milton died 9/15/1889 and Mary Ann Bolton Pomroy died 3/14/1898. According to the bible "Milton Pomroy for reasons known to himself dropped the e from the name which was Pomeroy".
My family is as follows:
Mother: Mary Ellen Chadwick, daughter of Gertrude Elizabeth Pomroy Chadwick, daughter of Earl Milton Pomroy, son of Sanford.
I too am trying to find who Milton's and Mary Ann's parents were. If you find them, please let me know.

Hi Theresa, I feel your pain! I trace my ancestry to Milton and Mary through Sanford Pomroy whom I believe to be Joseph's younger brother, born about 1847 in Canada. Do you have any tidbits that confirm their sibling relationship? I find Milton and Mary with (presumably) a daughter at home, Edith in 1880. Joseph and Sanford would likely have been away from home at the time, right?

Anyway, glad to know I'm not alone hitting a wall on this one. Makes me wonder if Milton changed surnames when he came to N. America or something, I've seen no records past when they pop up in Minnesota. FYI my dad is actually from the Rochester area so I'm operating on the thought that they were in the region for five generations.

-Thomas Pomroy

I'm in California, so it's a bit far for me to go....
Thanks!
Neil,

Do you have any other information on your grandmother's side? I'm looking for the Pomroy side of my family and I only know they lived in the Phiadelphia area. My great grandmother was Laura Pomroy(1918-1972?) and it's my understanding she had 2 brothers that served in the war. I'm guessing WWII. All I've been told was that her family was from Pennsylvania. I don't have any information on her parents either, unfortunately. Her husband was Delio Garcia(1915-1985)who also served in WWII as a Marine. I have found some information on Delio's family but nothing at all on Laura's side. If this matches anything you have I'd be extremely grateful if you could share that with me.

Was your Joseph Pomroy born in 1843? That's the one who is buried in Ortonville. I found out that his daughter's name was Ida; she married my grandfather, August Radmer. After her death in 1934 August married my grandmother, Dorothy. I think there was another daughter, Elsie, who married a Williams, and also a son, Mark. I think one or more of them lived in the Montevideo, Minnesota area (Chippewa County).
Mark died in 1956 in Chippewa County.
I looked up Ida's death certificate at the Big Stone County courthouse and it lists her mother's name as Sarah Kemerer, but I'm not sure if that was her maiden name or possibly from another marriage.
I have found some names on the Minnesota Historical Society website: mnhs.org
An alternate spelling is Pomeroy; I also found 2 graves in Appleton, MN (Swift County), I think the names were Otis and Alvina - would have to check my file. Not sure if these are related.

Simeon Pomroy is listed on the back of a photo of Maria (Leonard) Pomroy as one of her sons. Somewhere I picked up that he was born in Bangor. Lewis Pomroy and wife (Maria) are buried in the Locust Grove cemetery in Hampden, Maine, and Lewis and Maria are my 'brick walls'. My husband is their great-grandson through daughter Caroline, who married Francis Snow.

Hi James,

I have POMROY connections in my family history and am a member of POMEROLOGY which is a Family Association covering POMEROY/POMERY/POMROY and other spelling variants. We have a very comprehensive website which you may find interesting to explore at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/. We have developed many POMROY trees some of which have 'loose ends' due to emigration from the UK. I would be particularly interested in whatever information you have with links to the UK, which almost certainly will connect into one of our trees. Look forward to hearing from you. Best regards.
Derek Iremonger

John Abslom & Isaac M. Pomroy

There is a lot of confusion about my husband's 2nd gr grandfather, John Abslom Pomroy (1843 - 1916). There was a story being passed around in the family that he had served in the Confederate Army, with the 51st Consolidated Regiment, TN Infantry, and because of starvation, deserted to join the Union.
According to a sworn deposition, dated April 22, 1912, that I have possession of from the War Department, John A. Pomroy swore under oath that he never served in any military other than the Union. He also swore his name was spelled "POMROY." We have his records that prove he served in the 2nd Regiment West, Co. K, TN Cavalry, which soon became the 7th Regiment, Co. K., Tennessee Cavalry that was captured at Union City, Tn, on March 24, 1864. He escaped capture a few days later, but his uncle, Isaac Pomroy, age 38, wasn't so lucky. He ended up dying at Andersonville Prison (also known as Camp Sumter). Isaac died of Scarbutus on Oct. 11, 1864 and was buried under the name "John A. Pomroy."
When John applied for pension in the late 1890's he had to verify several items to "prove" he was indeed John A. Pomroy that served in the Union.
I have the military records from the National Archives on both John A. Pomroy & Isaac M. Pomroy to verify this story. Hopefully, it clears up the "rumors" that circulate. There were other J.A. Pomroys/Pomeroys in TN at the time, and it causes some confusion. All the records from 51st Consolidated Regiment were destroyed accept for a few enlistments. All we have is John A. Pomroy's sworn statement that he only served in the Union to go by. I'll take his word for it! Hope this helps all those Henderson County, TN, and Lamar County, TX, "Pomroys" with the question of why John A. Pomroy was buried in Andersonville in 1864, when he lived to father 11 children after 1870!! If you have questions, please email me.
Mildred I just came across your request for the Pomroy Spy information. If you send me your e-mail address I will forward what I have. The information is available on the internet which is where I found it all. John or William Pomroy went into New Jersey in late Dec 1776 and compiled information about enemy forces at the request of Gen Washington. He spent a week riding thru new Jersey prior to the christmas crossing of Washington. His report is in a letter Col Reed sent to Washington on Dec 22nd and its called the "Pomroy" letter. The letter Washington sent on Dec 14th and the reply to Washington on Dec 22nd are public record available at the "Papers of George Washington" on the intenet. If you cant find them just send me your e-mail address and i will sent the links or the copies of the letters.

My g-g-g grandfather was William Pomroy m. Mary Beal. His son Capt. Abner Pomroy who lived in West Tremont on Mt Desert Island, ME was my g-g grandfather. I visited there in May and took photos of gravestones, Abner's house, etc. I, too, am searching for birth information for Wm. and a death record. I understand that he died in the Boston area and that his cemetary was built on - apartment buildings. Families were not advised and nobody knows what happened to all the graves. I don't recognize some of the names in your query.

I also heard a story passed down that one of our ancestors was offered the position of head of the continental army before it was offered to Washington. This is first mention I've had of a spy though. Have you heard anything?

Diane Pomeroy Lunt
