Her and her family lived in the Pensacola, Florida area, and her fathers name was Vincent or Pete Pons, born in 1902. My father told me that there family was based out of Mobile and New Orleans.

I'm taking a shot in the dark at this point because I've hit a wall. It's possible that I just don't know what I'm doing, but I can't find anything on my grandmother's family past her father and his siblings.

I am the granddaughter of Marguerite Pons (b. 1923), who was the daughter of Malcolm E. Pons (b. 1900). Marguerite was born in Chicago, but her father was born in New Orleans along with his 6/7 siblings and his mother Frances R. I know that he married Marguerite / Mary Haye, but that's it. I've got nothing from that point back.

It's like they just appeared out of nowhere. I can't find any records of their father's name, what parish they're from in New Orleans or anything else. I tried looking at records and graves while I was down there last, but found nothing at all. Ancestry.com has come up blank as well, so I'm hoping that someone knows something about these people as I can barely even find a census record.

Thanks!

He received his education at Madison, Tenn., and in the Nashville public shcools. He was inducted into World War service at Nashville, May 27, 1918, and sailed for overseas duty with Company A, 533rd Engineers Corps, on August 26, 1918.
When the War of Spanish Succession concluded, Gibraltar and Majorca (the Balaeric Islands) were ceded to Great Britain in 1713. Then Majorca, back to Spain again in 1802. Many people scattered, some to Italy. My Pons to Gibraltar.
In my research I found Francisco Pons going to Florida, from Majorca in the late 1500's.
During the Spanish Civil War parts of our family went to Uruguay in S.America. Some to Malta.

PS Lily Pons was French. here is a town named Pons in Southern France.
Pons to Ponce

Jeff, this probably doesn't help, but I believe Ponce is merely the Castillian version of the name Pons. "Pons" itself seems to be the French -- and Catalan, including not only the region around Barcelonia and Valencia on the Spanish mainland, but also the Balearic islands (including Mallorca and Minorca). The name change might reflect a desire (either on the family's part or that of administrators) to use the form of the name common in places like Madrid. I've noticed in my research that a lot of French names were converted to Spanish ones (and vice versa), depending on who was keeping the records!

Majorca IS Mallorca

I only just found this message, so this is probably something you already know, BUT "Majorca" IS "Mallorca." The latter is the Spanish version of the name, whereas "Majorca" is the Catalan form. Since the local language is Catalan (which is somewhat akin to Provençal), I'd say that "Majorca" should be the preferred spelling, but many maps use only the Spanish version of the name. Good luck on your search.

Mallorca is Spanish, as well. In this case there is no difference. The form "Majorca" evidently uses a "j" that sounds like a "y" (as in German). In Catalan -- as, I believe, in Castillian Spanish as well -- the "ll" gives a sound similar to the "ll" sound in the English or American pronunciation of "million."

I do not have the documentation for this myself, but I have been in e-mail contact with another descendant of Miguel/Michel Pons and Louisa Wilhelmina Waldo. According to her information, Michel was the brother of my own great-grandfather Emile Pons. I found by looking at the ftp site ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/la/orleans/births/index/
that my great-father indeed had a brother named Michel. Their parents were Peter/Pierre/Pedro Pons and Marguerite/Margaret Reeb. I'd be happy to link you up with the other descendant of Miguel/Michel.

Strange to reply to myself, but this is an addendum to my previous message. Pedro Pons (the Catalan form would be Pere) was not from Madrid, but from the island of Menora. If he had been from Madrid, the surname would probably be Ponce. Menorca and the other Balearic islands, as well as the region around Barcelona (Catalunya) form a Catalan-speaking part of Spain. Pons is a common surname there.

I certainly can't say whether you are related to Lily Pons or not, but it is my understanding that she is of French ancestry. If the Michel Pons who is your great-grandfather is the same as the Michel Pons who is my great-grandfather Emile Pons's brother, their father immigrated from the island of Menorca, part of Spain. Of course, I may be entirely wrong -- and in any case, the French and Catalan branches of Pons could well be related.

Time frame for Michel Pons?

Do you have a time frame for your g-grandfather Michel Pons? I once copied the names of several Pons families from the 1880 and 1900 U.S. Censuses from New Orleans. I have a Michel who was living on Soraporu St. He was 31 in 1880 and married to Louisa, 27. Children were: Lila, 8; Louise, 6; Michel, 4; Charlie (not sure if I got name right), 2; and Emile, 4 months. There is also a Michael in the 1900 Census, on Clonet St. He was 24. Also listed (as Michael's sister, not his wife) is Theresa, 17. My own Pons immigrant ancestor was named Peter, and he was from Menorca (a Spanish island in the Mediterranean). He was married to a Margaret (or Marguerite), and their children included Margaret, Emile (my g-grandfather, born in New Orleans in 1865), Selina, and Johanna. Note that although I identify Menorca as a Spanish island, the native language is actually Catalan -- which you might consider "in between" Spanish and French. Of course, many Pons families were from France or from the Spanish mainland. The tricky thing is that because those from Spain settled in a very French-influenced areas, before too many generations they may have seemed French and even thought they were French, even if they were from Spain. Hard to say. The Census records for 1880 and 1900 do list the place of birth of everyone in the record, but for Michel and the rest it seems they were all born in Louisiana! Some of the Pons families do show Spain, and others show France.

Miguel Pons offsping Maria I. Pons Ramirez of Key West.

From what I have seen of the listing there seem to be a bit of confusion about just where Ferrer and Acosta lines merged with Pons. A bit of a guess here is there where two Maria Ignacia.

My great-grandmother Maria I. Pons b. 23 Aug 1889, married Blas Rogelio Ramirez. The 1920 US census has her as the wife of Blas Rogelio Ramirez, with her age as 30 and b. in Cuba. The 1935 Census has her married to Blas and an age of 45, b. Cuba. Her tombstone located in the Key West cemetery has a date of death of 1 Mar 1955.

During my brief visit to Key West this summer I was able to view an index listing for the Key West Citizen newspaper. I noted, on paper, articles that were of interest no me. But I was unable to view all the earmarked articles in my 2 days at the Library. This was my 1st time there and most my research was on my Ramirez line. But my notes show that there are obits in the Key West citizen for Esperanza Perez Pons, 28 Sep 1931; Margarita Pons, age 57, 21 Jan 1963; Horacio Pons, age 84, 27 Nov 1978. As per Terri's posting it appears tthat Horacio was the brother of Maria I. Pons Ramirez. Esperanza was his 1st wife and Margarita Rodriguez was his 2nd. I also have Horacio Pons, Esperanza Perez Pons, Virgillio Pons, Dolores Garica Pons, Amparo Pons and one Evilejio Pons Acosta; all appear at various times as Baptisms Sponsors of Maria and Blas Ramirez 's 12 children.

My tree is posted on the world connect trees w/ username of Southpaw1x. Also at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/e/m/John-C-Hemi...

Hope this helps some...
Maria Pons of Key West

What a pleasant surprise to come across your posting. I have been researching the Ramirez line in Key West for almost 2 years and had found zip on Maria Pons, who by the way is my Great-grandmother. Maria married Blas Rogelio Ramirez. Blas is father to Rogelio Flerenico Ramirez my grandfather. There is no info, on Maria in any databases I have searched and I can find no listing on the World Connect family trees. Dead-ends are expected but not so early in the line. Thanks for helping me break down that wall, Cousin!
I think your Emparro is may be my Amparo, which appear as sponsor on baptismal records of some of my Ramirez line.
Other KW Pons I have from baptismal records are: Esperanza Perez Pons, Virgillio Pons, Evilejio Pons Avosta, and Dolores Pons. I have on partial record of the Baptismal of Pons Celido Alphonso, parents Horacio Pons and Margarita Rodriguez, Sponsors are Frank Del Villar and Mrs. Nora Elizabeth Betancourt, born Nov 26, 1936, KW.
