I haven't found any connection in my Pope line to Sampson, NC nor to James or Issac Pope. But another person who commented on my post a few years ago does list Sampson in their comment. Look down a few posts under the original comments of my query; I think it's 'davidsjean' comment. Hope this helps and hope you find what you are looking for. Since my origianl post I have been able to carry my Pope line back to England in 1565.

Re: Trying to confirm military service for William H. Pope

Well, I just got off the phone with a good friend of mine who informed me that he is now the SCV Genealogist Member to talk to in matters such as this. I explained to him in more detail what I had found and what I had been looking for in way of information relating to the service of William H. Pope in the Confederate Army.

Here is what I learned...

William H. Pope was not in the "3rd Reg. Alabama Volunteers", as stated in 'The Heritage Book of Marengo, AL'. He was in the 3rd Alabama Reserves. He enlisted as a private and, at some time during his tour of duty, he was stationed in Mobile, AL where he rose to the rank of Captain.

Knowing now, with more certainty, that my ggg-grandfather served in the Confederacy, I am now going to submit my application for Lifetime Membership status in the Sons of Confederate Veterans. My friend is putting all the paperwork together for me, and I will be attending my first SCV meeting this coming Monday. And, according to my friend, following my acceptance into the SCV, he will prepare for me all of the evidence necessary to prove without doubt who William H. Pope was (as far as can be known from his military records accessible by the SCV).

I must admit, it was great speaking with this particular friend on the subject. He accessed his databases and gave me a quick play-by-play account of William's service from the time that he enlisted up to the end of service.

Trying to confirm military service for William H. Pope

I wonder... has anyone ever bothered to contact the Sons of Confederate Veterans or any other office to confirm the service record of William H. Pope?

According to 'The Heritage of Marengo County, AL', William H. Pope supposedly enlisted in the 3rd Alabama Regiment, Company Unit I.

Using the online Alabama Civil War Service Database, a search for all servicemen having the last name of Pope and assigned to the 3rd Alabama Regiment, Company Unit I returned only one record. That record was for Joel W. Pope.

Using the same Alabama Civil War Service Database and searching for all servicemen having the name "William Pope", a total of 23 records were returned, all having middle initials or names. Of these 23 records, there were only two servicemen having the name "William H. Pope" and one having the name "William Henry Pope", but none of these three were in the 3rd Alabama Regiment as stated in 'The Heritage of Marengo County, AL'.

If anyone has had the opportunity to contact the Sons of Confederate Veterans or any other office to verify the information published in 'The History of Marengo County, AL', it would be nice if you shared the results of your research.

In the meantime, I did send a letter to the National Sons of Confederate Veterans Genealogy Member, Mr. Bouldin, asking him to look into this matter. I'll post the results of my letter to him, when received.

Hi Carl,

Yes, I would like to share information on Henry. I've accumulated some information on his death in LA. I don't know how much you know about that.

I think there may have been another cousin in Christian Co. I saw this the other day, but haven't had time to look into it. There was someone named Poleman, I think also in the 33rd IL who could actually be Pohlman, a family who married into the Popes several times. My 3ggrandmother was Eleanor Susannah Pohlman who married Horatio Gates Pope, son of Timothy Pope and Hannah Smith in St. Lawrence Co NY. I'm the gggrandaughter of Horatio Gates and Susannah Pohlman's daughter Louisa Eleanor Pope married to Silas Polley.

How do you fit in?

Barbara

Hi ronj326,
I just found your post about William Pope and Charles Pope going back to the 1500's, and I was wondering if you would send me that information. I am the great grandson of Sarah Adeline Pope the sister of William P. Pope. I have two conflicting parentage for her. Is it William Pope of Edgecombe, NC or Stephan Pope of Dobbs, NC.? My mother, Bobbie Jean Miller, always thought it was William Pope. Another cousin thought it was Stephan Pope. Your research would help greatly. Please send it to my via my email address at johnlsullivan3 at comcast dot net. I look forward to hearing from you concerning the Pope family.

Thanks,
John Sullivan

My direct family is from the Southampton Pope family of Thomas Pope. I search any and all Pope lines. I search for documents and proof which I have from all my research for over 30 years of research in Virginia, North Carolina, and all states south. I have estate records, wills and misc. records from Virginia as well as marriage records, and from other states searched. I have over 200 pages of misc. families and information I am still searching. Nathaniel Pope was married 1st to Mary Williams her father's will. Together they had Jonathan and Elijah, that is why Patience called them son-in-laws in her will, but back in those days every one was a cousin or in law mostly in wills. They were the only step sons. The others Joshua, Phobe, Joel, Nathan, Richard, Patience anc Charity were children by their marriage. Their are no other step children as you stated. It took me some time to get the deeds and proof that the Richard I named as a grandson in my book was really the son. I finally found the proof I needed from a deed. He had been left land by his father Nathan that was left to Patience and when she died it was to go to son Richard. Richard sold that same land that is listed in all deeds when he became of age and received the land. As for the other family members some moved to Northampton County NC, some stayed in VA. Others moved to TN. My research is a love of genealogy and history and I hope will be a treasure to families that would never know who they are. My new book has many additions because I continue to research and add lines. I also intend to print my misc. information of deeds, court records, wills, census records and many proofs that will be of great help to someone searching.
Marie

Firstly, my name is Betty Chandler. I am not related to Nathan Pope; rather, to Nancy Stephenson (daughter of Amos Stephenson of Southampton) who was first married to my gggg grandfather, Elias Barrett, son of Jesse Barrett of Southampton. Elias and Nancy Stephenson had one son, Richard, before he died. Elias appears to have died 1814-1816, when his son was about 3 years old. The only records after that time frame are taken from Southampton County Chancery Records wherein there is a suit and countersuit filed by Jesse and James Barrett vs. Nancy Stephenson and infant son of Elias, Richard Barrett. I can find no record of Elias' death or where he reposes.

It is good that you present a different perspective, I will review back over the information and sources that I have. Keep us updated on information and sources you discover. I am direct descendant of Nathan and Jehu Pope.
Again, how are you related to the Pope family????
Nathan Pope's father is believed to have been Nathan Pope. I believe there were several. Births: Nathan Pope b. 5-5-1777 and his wife, Nancy Stephenson Barrett, was b. 4-6-1790. Neverson Pope was born 6-25, 1818. Madison Pope, was b. 1-22-1820. Oswald Pope was born 3-24-1822. Eliba Pope b. 2-29-1824. Amos S. Pope b. 3-26-1826. Isaac S. Pope b. 5-30-1828.Riddick Pope, b. 2-72, 1830. Jemima F. Pope, b. 10-20-1833. Lastly at bottom of page is the following notation: "Richard Barrett the son of Elias and Nancy was born November 10, 1813." In another column: Mathew R. Pope, son of Nathan and Rebecca was born 3-22-1811; and Matilda Pope was born 2-18-1808.
The next paragraph says "Deaths (taken from headstones at graves) Nathan Pope died 8-25-1843; and Nancy Pope died 8-23-1854. Can anyone tell me where Nancy and Nathan are buried? Also, Jesse Barrett's son, Elias, father of Richard Barrett and Nancy Stephenson's only son, are buried? Richard (b. 1813) forward are buried at Poplar Springs very near the Civil War graves. Any help appreciated.

I'm really not certain if this is a part of my line or not. My 4th great grandfather, William H. Pope, was born in North Carolina, as was his father (whom I believe may have been a Jacob Pope). The furthest I've been able to track the Mooney side of my family is to Georgia in the late 1880s.

It is entirely possible that there may be some relation, here. I am definitely looking for clues on the matter.

His father, Joel W Pope (b.26 Sep 1818; d.26 Aug 1904) was my ggg-grand uncle. George's mother's maiden name was Piety Vick (b.abt.1826; d.unk).

George was the youngest of seven children, and the only male child in the family. His siblings were Martha Anne Pope, Sarah Pope, Mary E Pope, Flora A Pope, Laura Alice Pope, and Lillie Pope.

George, his father, and most of his family were buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Marengo, AL.

BTW - from what I can tell from the 1900 Pineville, Marengo, AL census, your grandfather (Wesley Eugene Pope) had a brother named George L Pope.

I sure hope that this info helps someone.

Polly Pope of Marengo, AL (d.1891)

In Shop Cemetery, Marengo, AL (also known as Vick cemetery), there are two grave markers for Popes. One is a Jacob Pope, and the other is Polly Pope. The dates on Jacob Pope's marker lead me to believe that this is the Jacob Pope who I firmly believe to be the father of William H. Pope.

I am wondering about Polly Pope. Her date of death (1891) matches up almost perfectly with the date of death that I calculated for Mary Pope (1890), who I believe to be the mother of William H. Pope and wife of Jacob Pope. Looking at the 1850, 1860 and 1880 census for Marengo, it is clear that Mary did not know how old she was (her birth year ranges from 1790 to 1795). If this Polly Pope is indeed Mary Pope (as in, Mary Polly Pope) then this would explain why a date of birth was not engraved on the marker for Polly Pope.

This is just a theory that I am working on. All suggestions are most welcome.

This is an old post, but I didn't see any answers in response, so here goes...

James Leonard Pope (b.1872; d.1919) was my 1st cousin 3x removed. Married Iris Zilonia Bullock (b.1877). James' parents were William A Pope and Mary B Cobb. His father, William A Pope, was the son of my ggg-grandfather, William H Pope. There is a whole section on him in The Heritage of Marengo County, Alabama. I will warn, however, that some of the information in that book is incorrect, but it is still a great place to start from.

Before I tell you who I sincerely believe the parents of William H. Pope to be, I'll share with you the bit of creative research that I conducted in order to draw my conclusion. This is important because (1) it establishes the foundation for my conclusion, and (2) it might give other researchers ideas on how to research "outside the box" when they get stuck like I did.

Looking back at my previous entry of 20 Mar, you'll see some of the first steps that I took. I eliminated the theory of Jabez and Clerriby being the parents, and I was able to establish that the first name of William's mother was "Mary". NOTE: I still have not figured out Mary's last name, though I have figured out the name of her husband.

So, here I go...

I know that my ggg-grandfather, William H. Pope, was buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Marengo, AL. Using TrackingYourRoots.com, I was able to discover that there are at least 27 other Popes buried in the same cemetery, mostly around the same time period. That got me to thinking... "Is it possible that other siblings that I have not yet discovered might also be buried there?"

I had already added about three-fourths of the Popes from that cemetery to my tree, so I eliminated their names from my research. I also eliminated the names of those Popes who were more recently deceased. Then, I did some quick research on the ones that were remaining in the list, and I discovered that William did have more siblings than I had originally thought.

An examination of the 1850 U.s. Census for Southern Division, Dale, AL revealed that Jonathan Pope (d.; buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery) was listed in the household of Jacob and Mary Pope. At the time of the census, Jonathan was 22 years of age and Mary (his mother) was 55. Another family member listed on the census was his sister, also named Mary, who was 17 years of age.

The age given for Mary (the mother) would be just about right in relation to her age as it is calculated from previously examined census records for William's mother. The age given for Mary (Jonathan's sister) was exactly the same as the age calculated for Mary A. (Pope) Kiker (William's sister).

The fact that Jonathan Pope is buried in the same cemetery as William H. Pope serves further to strengthen the argument that Jonathan and William were brothers, thereby giving extremely high probability that Jacob Pope was the father of William H. Pope.

Anyhow... poking around in the census revealed that Jacob Pope was William's father. He was born in North Carolina around 1780 - 1782. I'm not sure yet when he died.

Now, for the bad part... There doesn't seem to be any info anywhere on a Jacob Pope born around 1780 - 1782 in North Carolina, so I'm stuck trying to figure out who his father was. I do, however, have an idea who he was. I just need to find some way to prove it.

Thanks vmross5118. It took quite a bit of creative research on my part to discover to my satisfaction who the parents of William H. Pope were. I've seen the mess that the Popes have made of our lineage in Georgia - read 'The Hills of Wilkes County, Georgia and Allied Families' and you'll know what I mean. I'm just glad that my paternal line didn't get tangled up in that mess.

If I get a little time to spare, I might just poke around the online records for your Mancel Pope and see what I can come up with. BTW - That's a great picture you have of him on your tree.
