Hi Carol,
My great-grandmother, Elizabeth Galbavy's, maiden name was given as Poppy on her obituary notice. She was born 4 Dec 1858 (dates and names subject to revision), in Budapest, Hungary. She and my grandmother (her daughter) both passed away before I was born. She came to the United States as a widow with 2 daughters, who were betrothed to 2 brothers named Chimo, living in Cleveland, Ohio. I don't even know Elizabeth's husband's first name. I think a widow, coming to a strange country alone with her two daughters would have connections somewhere. Another ancestry researcher is looking for a family named Poppy of Hungarian ancestry, also. I believe the first name is Nicholas born in the 1860's.

alice wheeler married arthur poppy (my greatuncle) early 1900's possibly this is the wheeler, my personal database is locked down at the moment but I will check later if I have anything on this poppy for you.

I suggest you obtain the marriage certificate as it will give you a father's name for your James Poppy then you can look for a birth entry and hopefully get that certificate.

Searching for any information and descendants of Charles Doughty Poppy who married Mary Gore in London in 1845.
Charles was deceased by 1881 and Mary died 1890 in Yarmouth area aged 79 yrs and was born in Kensington.
Known children were:

Alexander Gore Poppy born 1846 Camberwell, Surrey, died 1911,
married to Elizabeth born 1846 (1881 census under Poppey);

Clara born 1861 Marylebone, Middlesex, died 1947 Brisbane, Australia,
married Frederick William Smith at Exeter in 1890;

Elizabeth Ann born 1865 Marylebone, Middlesex.

Now have the marriage cerificate of Charles Doughty Poppy to May Gore.

They were married at Saint John's Parish Church, Paddington, Middlesex on 4 June 1845. Both were of "full age". Both resided at 17 Market Street.

Charles Doughty Poppy was a Draper, son of Charles Poppy, also a Draper. Mary Gore was the daughter of William Gore, Licensed Victualler.

Nathan Gore and Mary Ann Ratcliffe were witnesses.

I have been off line for quite a while and to come back and find someone has some information on Arthur Poppy was quite a surprise.He was my husbands grandfather and try as I may I just could'nt get any further than him.

His grandfather was Arthur John Poppy born April 24th,1904, died April 22nd,1969.He was married to Annie Elizabeth Morrison in Shoreditch,London in 1923.His mothers name was Wheeler.That is all we know.

We're assuming they came to the United States between 1895-1900 and settled in Divernon and Springfield, Sangamon Co, IL. Children: Elsie, Rose, Agnes, Margaret, Frank and Esther. Esther, the youngest child, was born in 1903 in the U.S. The other children were born in Budapest.

I'd like to hear from anyone who knows of this family.
