IMPORTANT - MUST READ - ORIGIN OF SURNAME PORTEOUS

Are you aware that in lower Normandy, France, there is a place called Port en Bessin?

Are you aware that the names Hugue de Port and Hubert de Port or elsewhere referenced as Le Sire de Port are included on the Battle Abbey Roll and the Falaise Roll for William the Conqueror? (Note: Apparently these individuals were from Port en Bessin, Basse Normandie (Lower Normandy), France.

Are you aware that:

"Port-en-Bessin-Huppain est une petite ville française, située dans le département du Calvados et la région de Basse-Normandie. Ses habitants sont appelés les Portais et les Portaises." (From: http://www.annuaire-mairie.fr/mairie-port-en-bessin-huppain....

TRANSLATION: Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is a small French town, located in the department of Calvados and the region of Lower Normandy. Its inhabitants are called Ports and Portaises.

I spent untold hours looking everywhere on the internet to determine the ancient origin of the surname "Porteous" to no avail. It did not seem "correct" to me that the Norman name "Porteous" first appeared as late as 1400 AD associated with a clearly established Norman name such as Fraise (Fraser). I started digging, using logic, and I discovered the above information.

The surname "Porteous" loosely (and perhaps carelessly) translated may mean "carrier" or messenger" etc., but I have always suspected that it was a name associated with a place, not an occupation or an adjective. The written word as it was in those days would easily (mis)spell the term Portais or Portaises in numerous ways, especially if the surname Port became a plural also, as in "the Port descendants became numerous" thus: the Portaises.

I hope everyone will start looking into this themselves. I suspect the Porteous name is more closely connected to the time of Wm the Conqueror than previously thought. If genealogists will start looking at the family name Port and descendants of Hugh or Hubert de Port, perhaps the connection will be made. I have a bit more information regarding these two de Port names, as well as a reference to them as Le sire de Port. The earliest reference to them finds them in lands located at Seamer, Scarborough, North Ride Yorkshire, England shortly after the Conquest. The father of these individuals is named Hughes Gospatric de Port, a sister is Emma de Port, Hugh's wife is Sybil de Port, and a son is also Hugh. It is unclear to me at this time, but I believe there were two de Port sons riding with Wm the Conqueror, Hugue and Hubert, although one reference I found did note "Hugh Hubert dePort".

In kinship spirit - Penelope Chisholm
Dear Jason,

I am currently researching my family tree name of Hurworth which has linked into the family name of Bousfield both families come from Yorkshire & Durham in the UK.

I have now traced a Adam Bousfield who appears to have left the UK for Canada and married a Anne Jane Porteous on 24/02/1866 at Pictou Nova Scotia..

I have a great deal of information relating to the Bousfield & Hurworth families and I wish now to add to my research this Canadian link.

Please could you tell me anything about Anne Jane Porteous who I believed was born about 1844 in Pictou Nova Scotia. She died 15/04/1909 in Sydney Cape Breton Nove Scotia and was buried on 18/04/1909.

From the 1881 Canadian Census the follwoing information has been gained

Adam Bousfield 39yrs UK Farmer
Anna J Bousfield 37rs Nova Scotia
Archibald Porteous Bousfield 13yrs Nova Scotia
John Adam Bousfield 11yrs Nova Scotia
Jennetta A Bousfield 7yrs Nova Scotia
Leonard Bousfield 2yrs Nova Scotia
Archibald Porteous 70yrs Scotland Widow

All residning at Hardwood Hill Pictou Nova Scotia.

There is also another name to the children :- Allison Leonard Bousfiled born 1877 Lyris Brook Nova Scotia who is not shown on the 1881 census and died 07/10/1908

It appears that Adam Bousfield's brother Thomas Bousfield who had a son called Alfred Bousfield ...Alfred married my relation Ada Hurworth in 1900 in Barnard Castle Durham.

That is all I appear to have so far, for what appear now to be my very distant cousins within my family tree living in Canada.

Kind Regards

Marion James
London
England

PORTEOUS births, deaths, marriages - in Nova Scotia

I have recently finished compiling the births, deaths, and marriage information for surname Porteous for the province of Nova Scotia. I believe there are only three or four different families so the information will likely only be relevant to a small few. Also, the records have several gaps so the dates covered is limited, especially for births and deaths. There are about 40 entries in all. If you are interested, please let me know.

Jason Porteous

Had his birth, marriage, parents on file, but didn't have death, so thanks for that! Have births of 2 sons, one of whom returned to AUS where he married & died. Also have births for 7 siblings of James, with limited detail (death info for only 3). Would be glad to exchange info. & compare notes as it looks like we may have different pieces of this puzzle (family #1324) - easier via direct Email porteousassoc@hotmail.com.
I have information on James Dempsey Porteous who was married to Jessie Gibson Roberts on 10/4/1885, Gorbals, Glasgow.

I have a record of his death 18/1/1944 in Govan, Glasgow aged 81. His mother was Ann Porteous (MS Dempsey) and Father was James Porteous, River Pilot.

The New South Wales registry for BDM records show James Porteous was born in Shoalhaven, NSW Australia in 1863 and has many siblings.

Please get in touch if you'd like further information.

These places are in Cumberland, England (Cumbria), where there are a number of Porteus families recorded.
A quick Google search also leads to a number of mentions, including an old GenForum posting from Derek Porteous from 2005 titled "Porteous in Kirklinton, Arthuret". I think he may be on this Ancestry/Rootsweb forum.
Good luck with your search.
Best wishes, Bruce

I don't know what the connection is but perhaps ... My mother was the seventh, and last, generation of our famly to be born in Ecclecfechan and I have found photos of Andrew Porteous in her photo album. The photos were taken about 1926 on RRS Discovery when exploring the Antartic. Some of them have hand written descriptions. I have never been able to work out how or why she had these photos but the connection with Ecclefechan must be relevant - surely? Ecclefechan is a tiny place!

I have just noticed your message.I have Elizabeth Ann Porteous, aged 12,in my family records in the 1871 Dundee Scottish census living with Jeffrey Thomson Inglis. She was the niece of his wife Elizabeth Inglis. At this time her sister Mary Agnes Porteous,b 1860,had been living in the orphanage in Strathmartine,Dundee.Despite much searching we have no idea why she should have been living there while her sister was living with their aunt.Their mother Ann died in 1862 in Liverpool.Their father was a shipwright. They married in 1844.Elizabeth Ann married Charles Adlem He was the village blacksmith in Durweston,Dorset. They had 2 ch.There was an older sister Sarah Porteous d.1924.

James PORTEOUS b. abt. 1736 - Newton, England

I have researched my ancester, James Porteous back to his birth in Newton circa 1736. His father is listed as Andrew, mother Anna Patterson. There appear to be several siblings. The family then appear to have moved to London, where James pursued a naval career, becoming master of George III's yachts. Would dearly love to tie in the missing links - why did the family leave. Anyone had an interest in this particular branch of the family?

Not much time today and haven't had much time to pursue my family history this last year, but not to left out of the loop...

Do not have a reference to the Reverend, but do have Thomas BELL Marriage 08 February 1877, Fergus, Wellington, Ontario to Alice JEFFREY. Parents of Alice, listed as Marg. PORTEOUS and George JEFFREY. My grandmother: Gertrude Alice PORTEOUS BELL.

Margaret PORTEOUS - Cemetery record reads HUGGARD, MARGARET PORTER MAR 1822 JAN 12, 1901 ALBION, NY BORN: ENGLAND, WIFE OF STEVEN HUGGARD & ____ HUGGARD, DAU OF JOHN PORTER & CATHERINE

HUGGARD, MARY 1880 JAN 25, 1897 ALBION, NY BORN: CANADA, DAU OF STEPHEN HUGGARD & MARGARET

This record is found on the Gen Web site, Margaret's burial is on a family plot - name should read PORTEOUS. Haven't figured out the HUGGARD association as yet, she may have remarried at some point, but I do not find any indication of that. She also would have been 58 years of age for Mary is her daughter.

Hope to have time to work on this a bit more before the PORTEOUS reunion - both my sister and I are planning on attending.

Any help appreciated and I will forward any info I may uncover.
