http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Court/1906.Court.html

MILLION DOLLAR ESTATE GONE IN EIGHT YEARS
DEFICIENCY ALLEGED IN FORMER TRUSTEE OF CAPT. PORTERFIELD PROPERTY
After a lapse of eight years, the estate of Capt. Robert PORTERFIELD has
dwindled from $1,000,000 to almost nothing. The estate has been subject to much
litigation during that time, and yesterday before Justice MAREAN, in the
Supreme Court, the matter came up again on a motion to confirm the report of
William S. COGGSWELL, to whom the case had been referred by Justice GARRETSON.
There were about thirty claimants represented by about as many lawyers. They had
all tried to get the attention of the court at the same time, with the result
that the justice suggested that they hire a hall.
After the death of Capt. PORTERFIELD, eight years ago, David A. CASE was
engaged as counsel for the estate and appointed a trustee under a deed of trust
made by Charles L. PORTERFIELD and Mrs. Mary Augusta MOTT. He resigned and
George S. BILLINGS, a lawyer, was appointed in his place. After being ordered to
make an accounting CASE did so.
On the ground that CASE did not apply the money he had received in
accordance with the terms of the trust deed, BILLINGS contested the accounting.
He alleged that CASE had turned over to the life beneficiaries more than the trust
allowed and that he had wasted the estate.
In a report yesterday Referee COGGSWELL finds a deficiency against CASE of
$22,000. A piece of property on Bedford avenue and Fulton street and another
piece on Gates avenue, near Reid, is all that is left of the once large
estate. The Bedford avenue property is mortgaged for $120,000 and that on Gates
avenue for $3,000.
About $7,000 has been allowed from the estate by the referee for claims,
and CASE is held personally responsible for about $10,000 other claims.
BILLINGS said that he had about $16,000 in a bank, arising from proceeds
of sales. The claims of mechanics and others will probably be ordered paid out
of this.
http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=FB0F10F939...
obit NY Times
August 10, 1899
Capt Robert Porterfield

Capt Robert Porterfield died at the home of his daughter, Mrs W H Mott, 137 Bainbridge St Brooklyn yesterday. He was one of the oldest retired shipmasters in this city, and was a large owner of real estate in Brooklyn. The funeral will be held tomorrow evening at the home of his daughter.

Capt Porterfield was born in Bristol, ME, in 1816. He became a sailor at the age of thirteen, was mate at eighteen, and master at twenty-one. He left the sea in 1854 and formed a co-partnership with Joseph W Yates, under the firm name of Yates & POrterfield, in the shipping and Est African trade. He retired in 1885. Since then he had devoted himself to his real estate interests in Brooklyn. He was a member of the Marine Society of New York and was for a number of years a Trustee of the East Brooklyn Savings Bank.

1880 NY Queens Co Queens
Porterfield Robert 65 shipping merchant ME ME ME
Porterfield Margaret W 56 wife keeping house NY NY NY
Burns Rose 22 servant servant
Belz Adam 50 laborer
living next door
Porterfield Charles R 24 bookkeeper NY ME NY
Porterfield Lika E 23 wife NY NY NY
Mott Wm H 34 hardware dealer NY NY NY
Mott Mary A 32 wife NY ME NY
Mott Leola R 2 dau NY NY NY

1850 ME Waldo Co Searsmont
Robert Porterfield 33 folows the sea b.
Hi,

I'm descended from the Sullivan County TN Porterfields who relocated to Bartholomew county Indiana, and then to Louisville KY. I can make a pretty straight shot as follows:

Myself
Martha Gail Porterfield (my mom - maiden name) (1947-)
Glenn T Porterfield 1914-1978
Ray Porterfield 1890-1957
Nelson D Porterfield 1850-1908

Nelson appears to be the one who moved his portion of the line to Indiana. What I can't seem to find a reliable bit of information on is Nelson's parents, my GGG GParents. Some of the Census information on here has him living with a Robert Porterfield and wife as a farm hand, and other Census data when Nelson was a head of household would suggest he didn't know his father, or know much about him.

Any idea of who his parents are?

She was a daughter of Robert Mackey Stewart, a native of Stewartstown, Tyrone county, Ireland, and Martha Ann Porterfield Stewart, who was born at Newport, Giles county, Virginia. Martha Porterfield came to Livingston county in 1844 with her brothers and with them helped to make up a caravan of some forty families who settled in and near Spring Hill. Mrs. Williams' husband, Ira T. Williams, was a member of one of the families which composed the caravan.

As a young woman, Mrs. Williams began her career as a teacher in the rural schools of the county. She taught in schools of Lock Springs, Chillicothe and Kansas City. She was elected to the office of Commissioner of Schools of Livingston county, on April 10, 1893, and served until April 10, 1895. She is thought to have been the first woman to have held elective political office in Missouri.

Ann E. Stewart was married to Ira T. Williams on January 27, 1906. For several years following their marriage they resided on their farm in Sampsel township. During the last year of Mr. Williams life--he died in 1931--they lived in the family home on Vine street. After the death of Mr. Williams, Mrs. Williams made her home with her nephew, Leslie C. Stewart, and Mrs. Stewart, who is a daughter of Mr. Williams.

Mrs. Williams' brothers and sisters, Leslie A., Douglass and Robert H. Stewart, and Mrs. Taylor Mahafey and Mrs. Thomas B. Anderson, preceded her in death. Besides Leslie C. Stewart, she leaves a number of nephews and nieces; three step-daughters, Mrs. Stewart, Mrs. John Cochran, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Archie Thompson of Gallatin, and a step-brother, Robert Williams of this city.

Mrs. Williams was a life long member of the Elm Street Methodist Church. She also was a charter member of the Daughters of Rebecca of this city and was the first vice grand of that organization.

Robert Porterfield (1751-1843) - Augusta County, VA

I am attempting to document that Robert Porterfield (Rev War veteran) was the father of John Porterfield (d. abt 1849). John was first married to Elizabeth "Betsy" McCue (1798- 1819). I am descended from his child, Martha Ann (1835-1885), through his common-law wife, Mary Ann (b. 1807). All I currently have on this family is a copy of John's will from 1845 (probated Mar 1849).

Does anyone have any additional information on this family?

Mildred Shiveley Porterfield, b.1908, wife of Edward Porterfield, lived Lafayette Co., MO

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Jake and Julia Shiveley and daughter Mildred, who married Porterfield”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Pleasant Hill (Cass Co.) MO, and the parents look to be in their mid 20s, while daughter Mildred is about age 4.

I found Jacob W. Shiveley and his family in the 1900, 1910 and 1930 censuses. In 1900, Jacob (born Aug 1869) and Julia E. Shiveley (born Jan 1877) lived in St. Derom (Nernaha Co.) NE. In 1910 Lafayette Co., MO census is shown Jacob W. (39) and Julia F. (32) living with son George H. (13), John M. (8) and Mildred M. (1 yr., 7 mo on 7 Apr 1910, so she was born Sept 1908). By 1930, W. Jacob Shiveley (52, born OH) and Julia (52, born AR) lived with son Marl (28, born NE). Missouri Marriage Records show Mildred Shiveley married 25 Dec 1930 to Edward E. Porterfield Jr. in Lafayette Co.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to this family.

I am part of the Porterfield group that holds reunions! It used to be held in Waco but now since not as many people are interested in coming anymore, it is no longer being held down there. Many of the older people in the group live in the panhandle and it was held in Lamesa last summer. The reunion has started being held only every other year as well. So there should be one next year. If anyone wants info please reply to this or shoot me an email and I will let you know when I hear anything about the upcoming 2011 reunion, or at the very least put you in touch with someone who can find out!
Talk to you soon cousins!

I hope you find your grave(s) and I certainly relate to the frustration of not being able to find someone you feel certain is buried in a particular cemetery or city.
We have the same problem with our great grandparents. We can find most of their children, but we have looked for years for the location of those two graves.
I think the problem is with some that the churches were responsible for keeping up with who was buried in the church cemetery and the records were lost or just loosely kept. Also, the grave stones, if they ever existed have disentegrated. Good luck on your quest.
Ginger Porterfield Patterson

James Ephraim Porterfield was my great grandfather. I am descended from his daughter Clara Porterfield Hawkins. I am trying to find his death certificate. I have looked in South Carolina for his death certificate but I have been unable to locate it. There is a dispute amongst some of my family members where he died. My grandmother used to say that he died in Henry County. He is supposed to be buried at Langley Cemetery. I am going to try to go by the cemetery later this week on my way back home from Charleston. According to Internet listings, he is not there but my branch of the family swears that he is. I was wondering if anyone else had any information on this?

My ancestor, Rachel Alexander (1730-1815) married Joseph Vance - their daugher Rachel Vance was born near the Potomac River in Berkeley Co VA(WV)and married a General George Porterfield 22 May 1792. Their children were William Alexander P., Mary Porterfield (married Tabb 1818), Joseph, Jane, Julianna (m. cousin John Porterfield), Martha (m. Cunningham), Hamilton, Jane V. (m. Morrison 1825), John, and Alexander.

Please let me know if this intersects with your group. I have not been able to find any military record of this "general", or connection with the later Confederate officer.

Thanks
R
Yes, this is Samuel H. PORTERFIELD and Jane Wallace PATTERSON who were married in Wilson County TN in 1832. Their children included James Fulton (b. 13 Sep 1833, my gg-gf), Julia Ann (b 6 Feb 1836), Mary Jane (b 13 Jul 1839), and Rufus L (b 23 Jul 1843). Eliza CARROLL is listed as living in their home in 1850, but she was not a daughter of either Samuel or Jane.

I have quite a bit on info on both Samuel and Jane, and their descendants, especially the line from their son James Fulton since that is my line. Where do you fit in on that line?

George

You have to watch out for these PORTERFIELDs. Just like the multiple John Harvey Porterfields discussed earlier in this thread, there are multiple Samuel and Jane Porterfields in central TN about the same time.

Jane Wallace PATTERSON (b. 1806, d. 1883) married Samuel H. PORTERFIELD (b. 1790, d. 1867) in 1832 in Wilson County TN. This is not the same Samuel more closely related to John Harvey PORTERFIELD (either one).

George
