I am descended from Francis Poteet. I also do not buy the Italian line. Can you contact me. I have researched this Poteet line starting in MD(my family ended up in North Western North Carolina) for many years hoping to find European roots. My father always said we were French. Would love to exchange info.
Thanks,
Carole Poteat-Levitz

Linda - When you say that John Poteet of Baltimore "always" signed his name Italian, can you cite for me any other intances of a document other than the deed of 1729 where there is a printed deed with John Poteet Italion, where this John Poteet claimed to be Italian? I have searched all of the Baltimore documents and only find that one and only document and it is spelled Italion, not Italian - which might open that up to interpretation. I can not find any instance where he actually signed anything Italion/Italian. His name was definately not Giovanni. Please let me know which other documents you have found with that reference, because I must be looking in the wrong place.
I am currently researching John Poteet who came to America in 1638, then brought his wife Ann the following year. He is believed to be the father of Francis who ended up in Baltimore. That John Poteet (Surgeon) was French.
I came across this posting today and found my Grand Mother listed.

Her maiden name was Fannie Bell Poteet and she was married to Chester Arthur Wilburn. They lived in Bellmead Tx (an eastern suburb of Waco) and he worked for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (KATY)Railroad. He was killed in an accident in 1927 on the job.

They had two children - Nina Inez Wilburn (Wetterman)(my mother) and Dorothy Faye Wilburn (my Aunt). She later re-married a man named Jacobs (I know little about this man) and they had one son, James.

Fannie Bell lived out her life in the family home in Bellmead and died in 1967.

I remember as a young child traveling to Krum Tx to visit who I think was Fannie Bell's brother and assume that he was a Poteet - not sure of that though.

If I can provide any additional information, just let me know.

First,

Let me say that Francis Poteet is my ancestor, that he arrived in Baltimore County (now Harford Co) MD by no later than 31 Jan 1661 and he was of an age of majority at that time.

This is what I know about John Poteete. He was in America, northern VA, sometime BEFORE Feb of 1638, how soon before that is not known for sure. In late 1637 or the beginning ot 1638 he sponsered 3 persons to America and was granted headrights in Feb 1638 for the immigration of those 3 individuals. So he was definitely in America PRIOR to 1639.

In Aug 1639 he was granted the headsrights for the sponsorship of Anne Poteete to America and then She married Nicolas Dale. Nicolas was actually named on the headright, as a part of the marriage agreement, and then he turned around and sold that 50 acres back to John Poteete.

I am not sure what the relationship of Anne and John Poteete was, but she was not his wife. She may have been his sister or daughter????

In 1659 John Poteete sued Capt Penrax for the servants (of John Poteete) that were lost at sea and Capt Penrax was ordered to supply 2 servants to John Poteete from his next sailing to the Americas. This leads me to believe that John Poteete was still maintaining his residence in England. John POteete was a merchant in America so he may have made trips to and from England in that enterprise? I have found no such actual records, but that would make sense if he still had servants in England 20+ years after he settled in America.

Everything I have found indicates that Francis was born in England, sometime between 1630 and 1640 based on all records that I have looked at, land deeds etc.

I have found no PROOF that Francis was the son of John Poteete, but have established this hypothsis based on timeframe, the apparent finacial capability of Francis at such an early age, the factor of Francis naming one of his sons, John.

I have documents and records of land transactions, wills, sales, sponsorships of other individuals, court cases, etc, that have established a very specific timeline for both men. John was in Northern VA and Francis first appears in MD, but that would have been a possible relocation in those times for a young man wanting to strike out on his own......but no diefinitive proof of the relationship of John Poteete and Francis Poteet.

Nor have I found absolute proof that Giovanni Pettite of London and John Poteete of VA were one and the same. I do belief that this is logical, but not proven.

If you want more specific info, please contact me directly at my email.

Which can be located by clicking on my profile at this site.

Carrie Bias Hoffert
Giovanni Patitte, my 14th great grandfather, was born in Italy in, I believe, 1610. He immigrated with his wife Ann to Virginia in 1639, where I am guessing, Patitte is changed to Poteet. This is what I have concluded from my research on Ancestry.com.

Levi Poteet - Mountain Meadows

Actually, Levi Poteet had three sons who were involved with the various Trains that went west in 1857 and were related to those who were murdered at Mountain Meadows. They were: Francis Marion Poteet, James Poteet, and Anderson Poteet. These are the "Poteet Brothers" that are mentioned on the memorial wall on Dan Sill Hill at the massacre site. The Poteet Train, also known as the Poteet-Tackett Train left NW Arkansas as all the other Trains were leaving that April for the westward journey. It is believed that the Poteet Train primarily hooked up with the Fancher Train that arrived at Salt Lake City first, earlier than the Campbell Train, the Baker Train, the Crooked Creek Train, and others. Not all of the Trains that traveled somewhat together on that trek were killed at Mountain Meadows. The Scott Train turned west nearer to Salt Lake City, however, their in-laws (Camrons) went with the Fancher Train and were killed. The Poteet Train and others turned off near Cedar City and traveled the regular route as they were expecting others to catch up with them (e.g. the Parker Train). The Poteet Train separated from the Fancher Train (and others)only one day before the Fancher party was ambushed by the Mormon leadership. They arrived in Nevada and stayed there for some time. Around 1860, Francis Marion Poteet returned east with his gold and relocated in Poteet Texas. James and Anderson decided to stay on a while longer. James stayed in the northern part of California while Anderson traveled on to Union County Oregon where mining had become big. Anderson married there. Some time later, James relocated in Oklahoma and Anderson did not return east until sometime after that with his family.

The names of the Poteet Brothers on the Mountain Meadows Monument refers to these three brothers - Francis, James, and Anderson. Levi Poteet and their mother, Catherine Basham, stayed in Arkansas and died there.

I forgot to add that Thomas Richard Horn Poteet was the son of Squire Poteet and wife Amelia Horn. I will search through my records for the names of the other wives. According to Mary Poteet Qualls of Overton County, Squire had a total of about 30 children from his different wives which makes tracking them a little trickier.

Hi Pam - the key to the Poteet Family is to sort out all the similar names. Thomas Poteet (not Thomas Richard Poteet) was married to Jane Taylor. Their information is well documented in the Overton County census records. Then there is Squire Poteet, Thomas' brother. Amelia Horn was one of Squire Poteet's wives. He had three that I know of.
Thomas and Jane (Taylor) Poteet had a son James (married 1) Edea Gore; 2) Sarah Price Savage Poteet. James had a son named Thomas Richard and then there was also other Thomas Poteets. Squire Poteet had a son named Richard and his first wife was named Jane - but that was Jane Marshbanks - not the Jane Taylor who was married to Thomas. Some people want to call Squire Poteet something else - I have even seen where people have claimed that Squire and Thomas were the same guy - but that is absolutely wrong. This is a monster sized family out of Maryland so it is important to track them back as far as you can to make sure you are always taking about the right guy you are looking for! Thomas Poteet and Jane Taylor are my gggg grandparents.

MacFancher,

Do you have any more information on Jane Taylor? My family records say that her daughter's name was Mary Patite and that she was Cherokee. I think her name was actually Frances Olivia Poteet, not Mary, but I was wondering where the Cherokee blood came from. I don't know who Jane Taylor's parent were or anything more about her.

I am looking for information on a William Poteet and his parents and any siblings. He was born in 1847 in Virginia and according to the 1910 census he fought for the Confederates in the Civil War. He married a Louisa Shupp in Iowa in 1876 and later remarried and moved to Washington State. Does anyone have any information on his Civil War service or parents/siblings?

My grandfather was from Blairesville, Georgia near Franklin, NC. I have traced our heritage back to Giovanni/John Poteet but have found no information on Giovanni himself. I would appreciate any information you may have on the Poteet heritage. My grandfather was Loyd Clabus Poteete and descended from John M. Poteete, John Nelson Poteet,William Patton Poteet,John Poteet, James Poteet,James Poteete, John Poteet, Francis Poteet, Giovani/John Patitte (Poteet). I can find nothing about Giovanni. I like many others, was under the impression that we were of French heritage with the name Poteet but can't find anything to confirm. Any help you can provide would be appreciated or any documentation you could email. My email is wmmcam1976@yahoo.com.
Your Thomas Poteet son of James and Elizabeth Crabtree Poteet maybe a brother to my Edward Poteet. My Edward Poteet was born in Bedford County, Va about 1764. I have always thought that my Edward Poteet was a son of James and Elizabeth Crabtree Poteet but couldn't prove it. If Thomas and Edward were brothers you could see why their descendants call each other cousin.
I have researched the Overton County, TN Poteet some but Edward Poteet's family end up in Lawrence County,TN; Giles County, TN and Lauderdale County, AL before they moved west. In Samuel D Poteet's estate paper in Lauderdale County, AL (1847)it states that two of his sons (Levi R and Elijah N Poteet) were in Johnson County, AR.
My email address is WEPALM@lorettotel.net if you want to contact me. I have 204 page on Edward and Martha Poteet Family.

Wallace,
Again, there are sooooo many Poteets with the same name. My records have Levi Poteet, being the son of Samuel, the son of Thomas and Jane. My grandfather James Poteet Fancher had many letters from FM Poteet that were sent to his grandmother, Ingabor Poteet Smith and his g aunt, Ellen Poteet Douglass. These were daughters of James Poteet (Edea Gore) who was a son also of Thomas & Jane. They were always addressed "Cousin." While I understand that can be a generic greeting, there did seeem to be a very close relationship between these two families. When James Poteet and his new wife Sallie Price Savage left Tennessee, in 1852, they stayed with Levi for the winter before leaving for Texas with the wagon train in 1853. It is my belief per my family history that James brother Samuel is the correct Samuel and somewhere histories have been tangled up.

Thomas (NMI) Poteet married Jane Taylor. Their marriage bond can be found on line and I have posted it on Ancestry. Thomas' brother, Squire Sr., was married to Amelia Horn. Just as Thomas and Squire have their own separate grave stones in the Poteet Cemetery, so do Jane and Amelia have their own.
Also, Thomas had a daughter named Amelia (Milla) who married Bryson Hood. They are also in the Poteet Cemetery. We know this Amelia was the daughter of Thomas because he deeded some land and a slave to her in 1829 - we know he died before 1830.
Squire and Amelia had a son named Thomas R. Horn Poteet who ended up in TX. This guy is very often confused with Thomas Poteet husband of Jane Taylor.
So, Jane and Amelia are definately two different women married to two different guys.

Thomas Poteet also had a son Thomas Poteet, but he is not the same as Thomas R Horn Poteet. Thomas also deeded land to his son Thomas in 1829 before he died.

I would think it highly unlikely that there were Poteets on the Mayflower. That manifest is pretty well documented and you can check with the Mayflower Society.
The first Poteet we know of arriving in America was Giovanni Poteet who arrived in 1639 - 19 years after the Mayflower. His business was to bring people over from England to America and he was paid per head for doing that. He was also known as John the Italian. His primary domicile was in the Baltimore Maryland area, considerably south of Mass.

Giovanni Patitte/Poteet's imigration papers can be found on line. He imigrated to America in 1839. Wife's name was Ann ????

Francis Marion Poteet was the son of Levi Poteet, who was the son of Samuel Poteet, who was the son of Thomas Poteet and wife Jane Taylor. They were married in 1867 in Baltimore MD. Thomas was the son of James (Elizabeth Crabtree), who was the son of
Francis Poteet, the son of Giovanni. When you get down to the Francis Marion Poteet level, there is a lot of bad information on the net so you have to make sure you are dealing with the correct ancestor. Too many with the same names! After FM Poteet left Arkansas in 1857 to go to the gold and silver mines in California, he returned about 1860 and got as far as Poteet Texas where he settled.
Lynnmarie Fancher (Poteet descendant)

Does anyone have prove that this Nancy Hymer was the wife of our Samuel D Poteet. I believe this Nancy Hymer and Samuel Poteet were a different line of Poteet then ours. They were probably the Poteets in KY not the Samuel D Poteet in Giles County, TN; Lawrence County, Tn and Lauderdale County, AL. I have put together a time line on Edward and Martha Poteet and descendants and have found nothing in Giles County, TN; Lawrence County, TN or Lauderdale County, AL records that mention the name of Samuel D Poteet's first wife. He married his second wife in Lawrence County, TN and she was listed in his estate papers in Lauderdale County, AL. By not finding anything on his first wife in this records I would believe she was probably Cherokee. Some of the descendants have stated that Samuel D Poteet's first wife was Cherokee put it wasn't mention in my family but that was a time period that no one wanted to be Native American.

Wallace,

I would like to link up with you some time and compare notes. I spent two days with Loreta a few months back. I live in Little Rock AR. Do you still live in Texarkana? Also, could you tell me where Touggle Springs Cemetery is located? I will go there and document GG Grand Mothers (Amanda Rosina Poteet) burial location and get photos of the area.

Hi-

I am also interested in the Cherokee connection. I joined ancestry.com and fund a lot about Rufus"s son Francis Marion Poteet, founder of Poteet TX, He married Mary Anne Davis who was a full blooded Cherokee according to a great grandaughter. I asked the woman who posted the article about this if she knew anything about Nancy Hymer wife of Samuel D. Poteet & Mother of Levi Rufus Poteet and my GGG Grandfather George Washington Poteet. She said she didn't know anything accept that her Grandmother and mother told her that there was an Indian connection which is the same thing that i was told. I'm told that I take after my Grandpa Don who has Indian Ancestry. He is the G Grandson of George W & Grandson of George's only child, Georgia Poteet. So, if you learn anything I'd love to hear & I do the same for you if I learn more.

Mary
