Do you have an Elsie Preble or a Jeremiah Preble ?
Its a very very long story, but there is a connection between them(by marriages)to my O'Donnell family.
I'm not going to go into it all here because its way to confusing and lengthly, but if anyone has specific questions I'll try my best to answer them. Try if you can to be as detailed as possible, so I'll be able(hopefully) to find inf. your looking for.

Do you have any other surnames(marriage or otherwise) connecting your Prebles.

Voss, Zerr, O'Donnell, are just 3 of mine.
They were in ME, and elsewhere in US including later in Washington state.

Thank you
Barbara

There are few minor mistakes in your list. Vernelia is the spelling of the name (but everyone called her PeeWee or Neely). Also, it's Elsie (not Elise), and my mother's name was Emma Nellie, but she always went by Nellie (just like Lorraine used her middle name all her life). I'm curious...which cousin are you?

Rufus was born Oct 1845, Newcastle, NH. He is a direct descendant of Abraham and Judith Tilden. (Rufus, Rufus, Rufus, Esais, Samuel, Abraham, Abraham). He died June 1933, Brookline, Massachusetts. Rufus married Clara B. Fox on 21 Feb 1889 in Boston, Mass. She was born on 27 May 1860 in New Orleans, LA and died 5 Nov 1919 in Boston, Mass. Rufus and Clara are buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The problem is I can't locate Clara's parents. No birth record found in LA, parents not listed on marriage or death certificates. I was hoping there might be some Preble cousins out there who could shed some light on this mystery?

Recently I have found the name Prebble living in the Kent area (UK) in the 1400's. My grandfather Richard Prebble came from Saltwood, Kent, UK. I managed to find 1 Preble address in France in Burkes Peerage.

Preble, was severely wunded Wednesday after noon, by the accidental discharge of one of te ship's pistols, supposed to be unloaded. The wounded man was attended by Drs.

Supposedly, Stephen Preble (b. 1778?) had a father who was a ship's captain, and who died at sea when Steve was a boy. His mother then married into the Marks family and his name was changed to Stephen Marks. Stephen's son Galen O. (b. 1810?) changed his name back to Preble when he grew up. He became known as Preston Preble. He married Hannah Gott.
Can anyone one confirm this story, or add missing details?

One of the problems that you are facing is the abundance of Preble's with the given name Benjamin around this time. Perhaps the one you seek might be a son of Andrew T. Preble who was a sibling to Eli T. and Hannah Preble who resided near Prescott, Pierce Co. in 1860. They were the Children of Benjamin (Feb. 7, 1777) and Lydia Preble. Eli Tibbett Preble is my ancestor who left Vassalboro, ME in 1852. The only other information that I have on Andrew T. is that he was born Jan. 8, 1811 and that he had a brother named Benjamin (Jan.20, 1814) whose whereabouts I do not know.

Benjamin Preble

My husbands great grandfather was Benjamin Reuben PREBLE / PRIBLE born about 1847. He is the last of my hold outs in completing a full 4 generations. I've been at this for 25 years, so you can imagine how annoying Benjamin has been. Last night while viewing census images on Ancestry I found one of Benjamins son listing his father as being born in Wisconsin, not Maine as we had long believed. Benjamin migrated to Arkansas County, Arkansas and died there after 1910. This started me searching Wisconsin records. Imagine my surprise to find Benjamin was enlisted in Wisconsin Co. D 2nd Cavalry and the Regiment History listed several battles he fought in Arkansas. He listed in his Civil War record that he came from Hudson with is in St. Croix County. St. Croix County was formed from Pierce County. I find in Pierce County a reference to a Eli, Rufus and Andrew PREBLE. I feel strongly that one of these men is probably his father (1855 census). I would love to know if anyone has heard of Benjamin Reuben PREBLE who went to Arkansas. I do believe he was born in Maine and moved to Wisconsin with his family. All census records in Arkansas for Benjamin show him born in Maine. His son's reference to Wisconsin was the first time we had any indication that he did not come straight from Maine to Arkansas. I am ordering the Pension Application with hope of finding more on him. Any help greatly appreciated.

My father has put together a family tree of the Oxnard side and may have info about the Preble side too. If you send me your adress I will send copies of the pages I have that pertain to the Preble side of the family. This will give you a place to start. Did you know both Martha and Thomas Oxnard are buried in Eastern Cemetary in Portland, Maine. They also had 12 children.
I will give you my fathers email when you respond. I hope I have been of help and good luck in your search.

Brad Oxnard

John Preble & John Preble of Machias

This is an information message about John Preble son of Gen. Jedidiah Preble. It is known that John Preble married Sarah Frost the daughter of Abigail Dunham and Capt. John Frost. John Preble, at one time, ran a trading post for Capt. Frost at Pleasant Point. Sarah and John had a daughter Lucy Preble who married John Mahar, and in regards to hard evidence, is believed to be the only child of John Preble.A rumor exists that John Preble was previously married to a Passamaquoddy Native girl who he married in a Catholic ceremony. Assuming this happened, I don't see anything objectionable in this. It seems possibly John Preble broke some Puritan convention by marrying a native or marrying in a catholic ceremony. John and this unknown native girl were suppose to have a child, John Preble of Machias who married Sarah Collins, lived all his life in Machias, practicing the Carpenter trade. There is no evidence that this is so but I think it probably true. Of course, one must consider the other possiblities, which are just as plausible, but have no more proof than the story above.
George Henry Preble talked about this rumor in his book "The First Three Generations of Preble in America" and re-iterated just what I said above, namely, no proof. In 1929 one George Preble Jone (think that is correct) wrote a short book "The descendants of John Preble of Machias". In that book Mr. Jones discussed John Preble , making inuendoes and suppositions that had no evidence and could only be the product of his fertile imagination. He talked of Reuben Preble , born about 1777 in Portland, and somehow blamed him on John Preble as well.Mr.Jones presented no proof and his suppositions irritated me immensley for that reason. I could present other theories just as plausible but that would be character assasination.
As I said, I do think that John Preble of Machias is the son of John Preble. I don't have proof but other works, such as "Military Operations in Maine and Nova Scotia During the Revolution" by Frederick Kidder and the personal Log of Capt. William Owen shed some light on the situation but don't prove anything. I refer to the following information I obtained from Capt. William Owen:
1) The French Catholic Missionary , at the time in question, to the Passamaquoddies was Monsignor Baille and he would have been the Priest that married them
2) In 1770, the time in question, John Preble had a native house maid whose brother stole something off him and John Preble wanted him prosecuted. Capt Owen settled it amicably. Nothing proved, but interesting
3) The catholic Records at Pleasant Point were damaged, or destroyed, in a fire around 1929. The remaining records are at Ellsworth, Maine if the record still exists
It is possible that record exists. George Henry Preble wrote to Machias, Me, looking for a marriage but they wouldn't have it since they had no native records or any records in that time frame.
I am descendant from Lucy Preble and John Mahar my grandparents 4 times removed.

My father Ferris Clifton Preble blew off some family history years ago and all I know is the "talking Prebles" were ask to leave Maine as they said more than A yup or some such local reply. They tended to settle in the tractless wastelands of the West and then go to sea in the US Navy. Go figure

Re: Zebulon Preble of Bowdoinham, ME

Hi Lorelei - thanks for taking the time to check some things out. However, the Zebulon I'm looking for is different than those mentioned by you and Gary.

The following is the closest "lead" I've seen so far. Perhaps in your CD of Bowdoinham records there might be a birth record for James Preble, 1761, who apparently was a brother to "my" Zebulon. Another brother could possibly be a David Preble of same age, as my Zebulon lived right next to him for 20 or 30 years. However, if James can be found with a parent, then the myster might finally be solved. See below from Rev War abstracts:

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Preble, James, Rebecca, MA Line, sol was b 14 June 1761 at Bowdoinham in Somersert Co MA (ME) and he lived there at enl and he appl there in Aug 1832 sol m Rebecca Weston 14 May 1793 and sol d 20 Feb 1835, a Sarah Preble aged 79 of Bowdoinham ME in 1839 stated she was at sol's and wid's wedding and that her husband Zebulon Preble was a bro of hte Rev sol James Preble, wid's bro Stephen Weston of Richmond ME was aged 62 in 1839.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

My Zebulon married Sarah Bryant (the above-mentioned Sarah) in 1786 in Bowdoinham, and had at least 5 children:

Jeremiah, b. 29 Dec. 1787.
Hannah, b. 27 Oct. 1789.
Martha, b. 6 June, 1792.
Dennis b. 12 May, 1795.
Sarah Perble b. 22 May, 1797.
James b. 4 Feb. 1801.

Anything you might find would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Jon
tried to respond to you in 2000. I am Marlene McGrath
and belong to the Abraham Preble clan. My grandfather was Alfred Preble son of Lemuel Preble who weaves his lineage clearly to Abraham. I have a
list of the ships my grandfather sailed! I don't have a
clue as to how it fits into your call for a list of ships the
Preble's sailed.

You will find reference to Alfred Preble as "lost at sea"
Current information shows him with a second family
in California, with 2 sons who are both deceased. I
am one of 3 grandchildren born to one his sons. The
other died childless.

My Grandfather Alfred Preble died in San Francisco, in
1917. I connected to the Preble Family with Harry
Preble, who found my story to be true.

I am interested in connecting with you. and wonder
how our paths have not already crossed..

I don't know why Eulogio de Celis is listed as my
name in the previous note I sent. He was Father-in-law to my grandmother;s from her 1st husband who
died in approx 1885. Alfred married Isabelle five years
later in 1890, in Los Angeles.CA

I have a list of the ships sailed by Alfred H. Preble,
my grandfather. (1890-1917) If that is in your realm of interest, I could email it to you!

Re: US Naval ships named Preble

There have actually been 6 US Navy ships by that name, the sixth having been commissioned within the last several years. Its website is http://www.preble.navy.mil/. The first four ships are listed at under the link "Ships Named Preble" at http://usspreble.org/, which is the website for the fifth USS Preble.
