1793 marriage record of Thomas Probert (of Wales) to Elizabeth Lacey in London

A cousin of mine who uses findmypast.co.uk found a parish record for the marriage by banns of a pair of mutual ancestors, Thomas PROBERT and Elizabeth LACEY at Saint James Picadilly, Westminster, London on July 8, 1793. We know that this is the correct pair because we know a fair amount about the couple, including where and when their children were born, much about their movements, their descendants, and some of Thomas's cousins. The register confirms that both were literate enough to sign their names. We know from a family history that their grandson wrote, that Thomas was from Llandefally Parish or village, Breconshire, S. Wales and that his father was born at Llwyngwyn (trans: White Thorn) farm, Cragerdern (now Crickadarn), Wales. Elizabeth was from LACEY GREEN. I have their family bible. The two are buried at Hughenden. On the same image of the page of the parish register, and on the same date, is the marriage of Sarah LACEY to Joseph PARSONS. Joseph is able to sign his name, but Sarah is not. It could be a coincidence that two women with the surname Lacy were each married by banns in the same home parish. It is also possible that they are related to each other. My Probert tree, with Elizabeth LACEY, and with much of what I know, is at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=bigbible&...

Re: Probets Surname

Hi Phillip,
My sister had Tom Probets traced through Ellis Island, and they say that Tom Probets changed his name to Tom Rogers, and arrived on the Saint Paul, from Southhampton arriving Sept 26th 1896 age 21 years 5 months Unmarried. His brother, our grandfather, Arthur Probets changed his name to John Rogers, came to Bundaberg, Queensland, was conscripted in the Army, and sent to Gallipoli, where he died in conflict. His service record is on the Australian National Archives Service Records. You may know this much. I haven't been able to trace him in the US. Cheers, Daphne

Hi Dixie,

I thought for a long time that the James Probert who came on the Thames from Liverpool in 1820 was our James Probert.

But I don't think that James was early enough to explain the following.

Susan Finett Probert Crumb was the *second* daughter of James and Asenath Probert. She did at age
22 years, just a year after her marriage, and was buried at Christ's Church Cemetery, Sherburne, N.Y.
Her headstone is noted to be broken all the way across, and set far down in the ground.

Cemetery site on-line says:

Finett, Susan, wife of Alanson S. Crumb and daughter of James & Asenath Probert- Feb. 7, 1841 - ae 22 yr (Stone mended all the way across and set far into the ground)

This would make her born about 1819 and she was the SECOND daughter.

Also there is the biography of a son that says he arrived ca
1812 via Quebec in the War of 1812. That seems a more likely time of arrival, but I haven't been able to prove ir.

Regards,

Sharilyn

My maternal grandmother was Sarah Hood Probert. She had a son and daughter (my mum). Her son died before my birth so Philip Probert was passed on to me. I had no idea of the history of the name. My only son is a John Philip. I will be intouch next week. Regards Phil Harper

I have Catherine's line back to the 1600s. Let me know how to proceed.
I am anxious to know how you are related. It will be great to collaborate on this endeavor.
Do you have PAF? If so, I could send you my information on this line.
Lina

Proberts - East/West/Little Dean, Coleford and Cinderford

I wonder whether anyone is able to help?

Currently i have traced my Paternal family history back to my ggggrandfather Thomas Probert but have been unable to find any cencus or birth/marriage/death records relating to Thomas. The details i have managed to obtain thus far are as follows:

ggggrandfather: Thomas Probert
Profession: Labourer
gggrandfather: John Probert
Born: 1869
Wife: Rosina (Rosa) Probert (nee Price)
Married: 14/11/1892 in St. John's Church, Coleford
Residence: Lane End, Coleford
Profession: Collier
Children: Beatrice Maud Probert (B. 1894/5), Leslie Oliver Probert (B. 26/11/1898), Edgar Roy Probert (B. 01/07/1911), Hilda (B. 1902), Ida (B. 1910).

gggrandfather: Leslie Oliver Probert
Born: 26/11/1898 in Upper Cwmbran
Died: 06/09/1940
Wife: Alice Edith Probert (nee Mustoe)
Married: 13/04/1925 in Parish Church, Cirencester
Residence: Mount Pleasent, Cinderford
Profession: Collier, Enlisted in the Navy 01/10/1915
Children: Leslie John Probert (B. 14/03/1931), Ivy Edith Probert, Edgar Roy Probert (B. July 1911).

However i have found a record on the Forrest of Dean Family Site for Thomas Probert marrying Elizabeth Tyler on the 26th June 1866. There residence at the time was Coalway Lane End (Coleford) which ties in with the records i have for the Baptisms of Lonnie Victor and Hilda May Probert in 1904. Also with John being born in 1869, three years after the date of this marriage, this would also seem to tie in.

The marriage of Thomas Probert states that he was 28 when he married Elizabeth Tyler, making his date of birth about 1838.

The only trouble is there is a 38 year gap between the marriage of Thomas Probert in 1866 and the Baptism of Lonnie and Hilda in 1904, therefore If you are able to find any cencus records which would confirm that this Thomas is my ancestor i'd be very interested to see them.

Thanks,

Scott

Belinda was b: 1881 in Coelford, Gloucestershire (ref. 1911 census), she married Charles Herbert Powell in 1902 and had four children (Ellen, Alfred, Phyliss and Gwendoline). Ellen possibly illegitimate, as born three years before marriage.

Belinda's full name is confirmed on both marriage and one of the children's birth certificates. But apart form those references, no further trace, no birth record or trace in the 1891 or 1901 census. Father's name Thomas Probert according to marriage cert.

Can anyone assist with any further information on Belinda ?

Thanks !

My grandmother is Estella Catherine Probert. My father is Rhys H. Jones. I would love to have any information on the Probert line. My father, 92, has always wondered about Charles Probert, brother of Francis. Apparently he left home and came to Utah, but I have not been able to find himin any records. Dad thinks that Francis Earl Probert, the physician and BYU athlete who was killed in 1965 in a plane crash is connected to our line.
Recently, I learned that Francis Marion Probert's father is John Probert and he was born in New York.

Hi, I haven't been on for a while. Basically Im trying to trace Proberts who were living in the vicinity of Hope and Higher Kinnerton in FLintshire and Dodleston in Cheshire in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

I am descended from an Edward Probert who was a farmer in and around Dodleston at the turn of the 19th century. His father seems to have been a WIlliam who may have been a cordwainer and then later a farmer.

Edward's son WIlliam went into the railways and my branch moved north into the Manchester area. His son was a Thomas Woodward Probert who was apparently a bit of a black sheep.

So any info about Proberts in this region would be gratefully received.

p.s. I have also sent this to your direct email

Thanks, Andrew

I am researching the men from Eastham, Wirral who were killed during WW2. Alan Probert is mentioned on the War memorial in the village and from the Commonwealth War Grave site I have managed to find that he was the son of Rashleigh Charles and Florence Probert of Bromborough.

Does anybody have any information about the family?

We are hoping to host an exhibition in Eastham (in aid of Help for Heroes) in November and would love to be able to bring the memory of these men alive.

Any information would be fantastic.
Thanks
Tracey

From known facts on our side, it was sumtime months before they were regersted, but at least it is a starting point.
His father was Wm, 1730 of Mold,m Elizabeth Williamson 24/11/1765, she was interred15/7/1770. They had a daughter Mary bpt 19/11/1768. ( she married one of the Edwards,on our side we think.--one of the names I sent you) Wm married again , 6/1/1773. to Ann kinsey of Hawarden, interred Dec 1782.
Would love any info you have, we have nothing after Betsy. Michael, my husband, will try and sort out what we have to send to you.
Wow. I am descended from the second Edward Probert you mentioned who married Sarah Woodward. They had a grandson who was known as Thomas Woodward Probert and is my great-great grandfa.
Edward had a son William (a name that seems to repeat) who went into the railways and ended up in Bury. William in turn had TW

Its brilliant to know the exact birthdate for Edward. We have been guessing that he passed sometime before 1841 since there is a record of Sarah living with William in Liverpool in the census of 1841.

Do you know where this branch of Proberts ultimately hails from? Given the Welsh name and the proximity of Doddleston to Wales we have been guessing the origin is somewhere like Flintshire.

If you would like I can attach our Probert line tree. I would be interested to know how accurate it is. The Cheshire connection is quite new knowledge for my family.

Cheers,
Andrew

p.s. a cordwainer is a designer/maker of quality (originally Cordoban felt) shoes (as opposed to a cobbler)
;)

There wereb a lot of Proberts IN Llowes some of whom moved to Glasbury around that time.
Thomas is such a popular name with the Proberts (so is James) that it is difficult to be able to spot the right one.
From the Llowes BTs I cannot find a Thomas born in Llowes in 1801! But strangely I have his birthplace as Llowes which I must have recorded from somewhere. I am not in the right country to be able to check this info at the moment but it will have to go on my list of things to do....
Sorry that I cannot help further. If you do find parents for him I would be very interested...
Thanks

I always thought my Proberts came from Wales but just found out they came to the U.S. from England. John Probert married ELizabeth Corkey and came to NY, USA sometime before 1903 which was when my grandfather was born in Brooklyn, NY.
Have you come across their names. I would like to start looking in England but don't know where.

My relatives from England are Elizabeth Corkey Probert and John Probert. I do not know when they came to the US but resided in Brooklyn NY and had 4 sons (Franklin Chase, John, Ernie and Alfred.) All born in US.
Anyone of them related to you?
thank you marilyn probert-pandya mamoo727@hotmail.com

Hi Laura,
They aren't in my tree but it could just be that I haven't got round to finding them yet! Any idea where they were born or lived?
