Sylvester Proffitt was my x6 great g'father; arrived in York, VA 1716 as POW of first Jacobite Rebellion. I have lots of info about him (mine and others) on my ancestry Tree.
Proffitt-Penny Family Tree
James Wesley (my x4 great) was his grandson, in my direct line, excommunicated from Baptist Church in N.C. because he joined the Masons (I have 2 documents to verify this)
I visited Wilkes Co., N.C. and Sevier Co., TN in Oct 2010 and took photos, bought books with lots of 'good stuff' which is on my tree, also. It's public, so help yourself to whatever interests you. There is another Proffitt line with David as immigrant, fm England, participated in Rev War...no connection to us has been proven!

Searching for Proffitts!

A very elderly relative, now deceased, reported that our Proffitt family name arrived here via Jamestown. She was a nun and a Professor of Languages who had a clear mind into her 101st year of age, and I believe there is at least some factual basis for her assertion.
-----
The male names which were passed down were Hiram, Wesley, George and James. (An off-hand comment I heard was, "If they have Wesley or Hiram in the name, they're cousins!")
-----
In 1850ish, a James Proffitt married a Native American woman (Flora? Fannie? Annie? Last name Berry or Miller?) who was born in the Carolinas. They died in Arkansas just after the birth of their son, who was then taken in by an uncle (also a Proffitt) in Louisiana.
-----
There was another story, less reliable, that this James had a brother (or an uncle) William who was traveling on a paddlewheel on the Mississippi with him. One brother was a Protestant (Methodist?) minister, the other an inveterate gambler. The gambler lost all of their money in an onboard game; the minister had the gambler put off of the boat; they went their separate ways. Exactly which brother was which remains unclear.
-----
Does this sound familiar to any of you who are researching the Proffitts? I found:
-
1. J. Proffitt, sailor, arr. Jamestown 1608, either died there or left, but no further record.
-
2. J. Proffitt, arr. 1623, d. 1625
-
3. Sylvester Proffitt, about whom I am reading with great interest...
-----
Please message me if any of this sounds familiar, especially if you have any documentation which might shed some light on the subject. -----Thanks for reading!

my Proffitts, according to 1850-1880 census were born in Tennessee. I was researching Kentucky because the earliest that I can prove is one Young M. Proffitt who married a MaryJane Patterson (Scott).
She was supposedly born in Kentucky and should have had a maiden name of Patterson. Their children were Nathan Chester, James Lafayette, William Yance, John McKindred (my g grandfather), George Oglesby and Della Maude Proffitt most of whom were born in St. Clair Co., IL. These don't really sound close to what you wrote except for the "Della."
The given middle name "McKindred" has re-appeared in our family a couple of times. No one seems to know its origin.
Does any of this ring a bell?

Hi Sarah:
My wife and I recently re-joined Ancestry.com
My Proffitts are first found in 1850 census near Joplin, MO and later the same year appear a 2nd time in 1850 census in St.Clair Co, IL.where they settled. Head of household is Young McKindred Proffitt married to MaryJane Patterson or Scott who was, according to multiple census entries born in Kentucky. Y and M.J. are my g.g.grandparents. Their 4th son is my g. grandfather, John McKindred Proffitt born 1857 and married and settled in Montgomery Co., MO
Although none of the surnames that you listed in your post match mine, I do have a Della Proffitt who is Young and MaryJane's 6th and last child born 1866 near O'Fallon, IL.
She also married a man from Montgomery Co., MO, settled there, had at least one child and died there.
I'm very curious where the given middle name of "McKindred" orgiginated and any and all info relating to birth, death or marriage of Y.M. or MaryJane Proffitt.
In addition, her maiden name appears to be Patterson although local family tradition indicates that her surname may have been Scott when she married Y.M.
If this helps or you have any further, please contact rproff@charter.net thanks, Rick

DNA? no; but I have "Scots Banished to the American Plantations" showing my x6 great g'father Sylvester being shipped to York, VA 1716 as pow from first Jacobite Rebellion. He was a laborer for the Earl of Glamis @ Glamis Castle, Angus, Scotland; the Earl was killed in battle. Several of our family have pd $$ for research with no REAL documentation other than the translation fm Latin in the Court of England, sending him here. I have lots of information (research from others included) on his page on my tree. Proffitt-Penny Family Tree on ancestry. conniepenny@sbcglobal.net NOW I've become thrilled with all the cousins I have; there is another Proffitt line fm David of U.K.; accidentally found it recently..NOT our folks! Did you know there is a Facebook site "I'm a Proffitt"? You won't learn a lot, but can make some good contacts there.

She married Hiram/Hyram Roberts. Their last child was born and died in 1912. I was thinking that maybe she died in childbirth but I can't find any information. I can't find where she is buried. I found Hyram Roberts grave but neither her or their child was their (or at least there was no headstone). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
My name is Charles Elmer Lee
I am also searching for family history I came across your post today 6/3/2011 all the names you mention in your post are the same as my family names. My grandfather’s name was James Walter Proffitt my grandmother’s name was Malinda J.Fore you stated that they had six children: James William, Bessie, Effie, Stacy, Robert, and William. These are also the names of my aunts and uncles, you didn’t mention a seventh by the name of Rebecca Ann Proffitt, who was my mother she married John H.Lee and birthed me March 31, 1941. Everything you posted matches my family even their Birth and death dates’ home
Laurel Co., KY Barbourville, Knox Co., KY. Since all this matches it is possible that we may be related.
You may reach me at: celee58@swbell.net
Trex, your Uncle Bobby Proffitt has all of this documented and on CD. You can e-mail him and I am sure he would send you one. Your Grandfather Bill T. (William Howard Arthur Trexler Proffitt) was born around Truman, AR near Jonesboro. His father David Wilkins Proffitt was born in
Amador County, California. His father, Lewis George Proffitt came from Missouri up in the NW corner. Then goes on back to David W. Proffitt, Reverend John Proffitt, David Proffitt Junior and David Proffitt and then our common ancestor, Sylvestor Proffitt. Two lines of Proffitt's came to america. Sylvester is one. The other is David Proffitt who came throung London, England. Sylvester fought on the side of the Jacobites in the second Jacobite Rebellion on the side of the House of Stuart to restore it rightly to the English throne. That wasn't going to happen since Henry VIII has established the Church of England. The Jacobites rebelled and were twice defeated. Sylvester is from Perth, Scottland. He was captured and sent to America most likely as an indentured servant. He came to Goochland County, VA and apparently won his freedom and got some land. Deeds and wills are available. This line then spread and there is a very concentrated lot in the middle Tennessee area around Marysville, TN. Our lot went to Missouri at some time. Lewis George went out west with the gold rush and married Lucinda Frency. There is a picture of her tombstone that you can get. Lewis George probably jumped a claim and was chased back to Missouri. He was a very vain man. He was married three times (wives died) and I believe may have had three sets of children. I have met some of one of the other wives. In fact, they are patients of mine. Louis George stayed around the St. Louis area and died there. David Wilkins Proffitt was a grand man according to my dad and uncles. He came to the Dyess area and did many things. He ran a store and post office at the junction of Hwy 63 and I-55 at Gilmore. He ended up back at St. Louis and died there. He died the year I was born. He was married to Katherine Trexler who you are named after. There is a Trexler geneaology. There are pictures of he and Katherine. Many were buried over in the Whitton cemetery and in the Finney Cemetery over in the cotton patch in the woods in front of the old Rushing house in Whitton. Grandpa was born in Truman as was my dad and yours and then got over to the Whitton/Dyess area. He was a riding boss for a plantation owner named Gus McClendon. He then began to farm. Your dad went to the military and my dad stayed and helped farm. It is a rich history. I wish I had recorded a lot of it but so well! All respect, Cousin Danny

James Arrington "Arnton" Prophet

I am wondering if anyone can give me a souce document showing Arrington "Arnton" Prophet's (married Jemima Bingham) first name is in fact James. There was a son born to John Wesley Prophet and Margaret Newman in 1853 with the name James Arrington Prophet who married one Jemina Elizabeth Prophet in 1873. Jemina and James were 1st cousins, Jemina's father being Benjamin Arrington Prophet. There is a marriage cert from MO dated 1873 for this marriage, but everyone in Ancestry who has it posted, has it posted to their James Arrington born in 1794, which, of course is not fact. Maybe the fact is that people are confused because both married women named Jemima, or maybe they just copied someone's tree without checking. If anyone can give me the source document, please let me know. Don's book "The Prophet Family clearly shows the first name of Arrington is not James, his gravestone shows Arnton, and I can find nothing that says his name is James. Help

Interested in Sylvester Proffitt as Wilson Proffitt's grandfather. Also interested in recent information that there was a Jonas Profit with the original settlement of James Fort, Virginia in 1607. He was listed as a sailor with John Smith from 1608 to 1609, but nothing else seems to be known about him.
Anybody out there with more information?

I found, through LDS records, that an Elizabeth Ennis married a William Proffitt and an Elizabeth Arnold married a William Proffitt. Both weddings took place on 23 Jun 1733 in Coventry, Warwick, England.

I do not know anything further that this. I do not know if there were two weddings. Or if Elizabeth went by two different names.

William is a common name, especially in England. Elizabeth is a commmon name, especially in England. Proffitt is not a rare name in England, as I found out when I lived there some years back.

I wish I could help you more, but unfortunately I cannot even help myself any further.

Armstead Blevins Cooper married a Margaret Proffitt, she is buried in the Bolivar Cemetery in Bolivar, Polk County, Missouri. One of their sons was my Great Grandfather, Caswell Taylor Cooper. If this Margaret Proffitt is the Margaret Proffitt that married Armstead Blevins Cooper, then she is my Great Great Grandmother, and that would make Silas Proffitt my Great Great Great Grandfather.
