Need proof on Jesse and John William Province

I am THIS close to being accepted into the SAR, but I have to prove that Jesse Province was the father of John William Province. Jesse was the son of Joseph Yard Province, who served in the Revolutionary War. If you have an obit, probate or will, pics, ANYTHING that can help me prove the father/son relationship I would be very grateful:

Jesse Province - father
Birth 29 SEPT 1802 in Masontown, Fayette, PA, USA
Death 03 APR 1873 in Belvue, Pottawatomie, KS, Polly Creek Cem.

John William Province - son
Birth 19 SEPT 1823 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, USA
Death 23 NOV 1911 in Chelan, WA, Chelan Wash. Cem.

Jesse is my 3rd great-grandfather and John my 2nd great-grandfather.

Thank you for your time and help in this matter.

Sincerely,
JP Morgan
jpmorgan@hotmail.com

Speculation on the Father of John A Province/Provence

Speculation on Father of John Andrew Provence

This is a long post so please bear with it.

This is speculation on the father of John Andrew Provence as of April 2012. It is subject to change as new information is obtained. Any comments or ideas are greatly appreciated. This work would not be possible without the discoveries of many other Provence researchers before me.

John Andrew Provence is the father of Antipas Moore, George W, Elizabeth, Oliver Perry and John O Provence. John Andrew Provence is believed to have been born about 1793/94 based on his age in the 1850 census.

Lineage

John William Provence is considered the father of two sons, Thomas Provence born about 1750-1755 and John Provence Junior born about 1758-1760. The name is spelled Provance, Province and Provence in various records. John William Provance settled in western Pennsylvania and died about 1785. He was married twice. His first marriage produced two sons, mentioned above. His second marriage to Sarah Yard, also her second marriage, produced a third son Joseph Yard Province, born about 1764.

Joseph Yard Province

Joseph Yard Province’s lineage is well documented. He had a son named John William Province born in 1785. He also produced over 20 offspring in two marriages including a Thomas Province born in 1798. His son, John William Province would have been too young (9-10) to have fathered John Andrew Provence and Thomas Province (1798) was not alive at the time of John Andrew Provence’s birth.

I believe that neither Joseph Yard Province nor his offspring can be the father of John Andrew Provence.

John Province Junior

John Province Jr. is an elusive part of the linage. He is noted as serving in the Pennsylvania frontier rangers in 1778. He is listed as a recipient of land in his step mother’s will (Sarah Yard) in 1796, which means he is still alive at that time. He is likely to be one of the five Province men who signed a petition asking for militia musters to be held on their side of Clinch Mountain in Hawkins County Tennessee in 1799. That is the last firm record I can find of him.

I believe it is possible that John Province Junior could be the John Province whose married Elizabeth Jordan and who produced several offspring including Lewis, William (1798), Joseph (1809), and possibly Henry (1801), Herman (1803), Hannah (1799) and Peggy (1797). I have no documentation on any of these offspring except Lewis, William and Joseph.

This John Province settled in the Powell River Valley in eastern Tennessee according to family traditions. There is no solid evidence I have to confirm he is John Province Jr. other than geography. The DOB for this John Province is generally given as 1771; however I have yet to find any documentation of that date. If it is accurate then it rules him out as John Province Jr. since that date would be a decade or more after John Province Jr.’s DOB.

If the DOB in 1771 is accurate then John Province/Jordan could be a son of John Province Jr. The date would put John Province Jr as marrying at a very early age (14-15) however that is not entirely impossible. His step brother Joseph Yard Province married at 16 and if the DOB (1771) for John Province/Jordan is off by a year or two this scenario is plausible.

Some researchers place the John Province/Elizabeth Jordan marriage at about 1795 so John Andrew Provence could be his offspring by that or an earlier marriage. John and Elizabeth do not show up in Jefferson County, Tennessee however or at least not in so far as I have been able to determine as of this writing.

While it is possible that either John Province Jr son of John William Province) or his son John Province/Elizabeth Jordan could be the father of John Andrew Provence more documentation would be needed to determine this.

Thomas Province

Thomas Province is in western Pennsylvania through 1783 and can be documented on various census, petitions, militia rosters and land deeds. He is in the Laurel Mountain area of Pennsylvania as late as 1783 when he is a signatory on a petition. Thomas is believed to have immigrated into eastern Tennessee shortly after this petition was submitted, probably after the revolution ended in 1784 or 1785. Some researchers also believe his brother John Province Jr. immigrated with him into the same area.

The movement corridors into eastern Tennessee were through the Powell, New and Clinch River Valleys and this is the likely route the Province families would have followed in the mid 1780’s. Clinch Mountain is along that route as is the Powell River where John Province/Elizabeth Jordan is believed to have lived when they married in the mid 1790’s.

Thomas Provence may have married a woman whose first name was Sarah. In the will of Sarah Yard Province (1796) one item is left to Sarah Douglas (Doughles), the daughter of Thomas. It is possible she was named after her mother or step grandmother as was the custom of the time.

21St: I give and bequeath one kettle that holds 3 or 4 gallons to Sarah Doughles, Thomas ‘daughter.

It is unlikely that this Thomas is the son of Joseph Yard Province. That Thomas was born in 1798 and would not have been alive at the time of the will much less have been old enough to have a daughter. I believe it is a reference to the daughter of her step son Thomas Provence from the first marriage of John William Provence.

Thomas is believed to have had several offspring including John Province (ca 1771), who married Love Barnard and moved into Alabama about 1811 (I label him as John Love Province for the sake of keeping the many Johns separate). He also had a son named William Provence (ca 1773) who married Rachel Cooper and stayed in eastern Tennessee until about 1830 before moving to Alabama as well.

Thomas Provence Junior (ca 1780) married Rhoda Green about 1811 and remained in eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia until his death in 1845. I believe Sarah Provence was Thomas Provence Senior’s daughter as mentioned in the 1796 will of Sarah Provence.

Five Province men sign a 1799 petition in the Clinch Mountain Region of eastern Tennessee. They are Thomas Junior and Senior, William (I believe to be the son of Thomas Provence Senior), and two John Provinces. I believe one is John Love Provence (he signs right after William so perhaps they traveled together) who is also a son of Thomas Provence Senior. The second John may have been John Province Jr. (Thomas Provence Senior’s brother) or the John Province who married Elizabeth Jordan. At this time I cannot say for sure which he is.

John Andrew Provence – List of Father Candidates

By process of elimination I am trying to come up with a likely father for John Andrew Provence born 1793/94 and lived in Jefferson County Tennessee for most of his life.

1. Thomas Provence senior’s son John Provence (married Love Barnard) was born in 1771 making him too old to be the John Andrew Provence who was born in 1793/94. I believe it is unlikely that Thomas Senior named two sons John hence I do not think it is likely that John Andrew Provence is the son of Thomas Provence Senior.

2. Thomas Provence Senior’s son John and Love Provence also had a son named John who was born about 1797 and married Anne Layman in Alabama in 1819. He is born a bit late to be John Andrew Provence and he is living in the wrong area. I do not believe this John is John Andrew Provence.

3. Thomas Senior’s son Thomas Provence Junior also had a son named John who was born about 1815 and is the son of his union to Rhoda Green. This John is born many years too late to be John Andrew Provence. I believe it is unlikely that Thomas Junior named two sons John and I believe he is not the father of John Andrew Provence. I can also trace this John as my ancestor and I know John Andrew is not in that line. He married Margaret Bishop and stayed in Lee County Virginia and Claiborne County, Tennessee.

4. Thomas Senior’s third son William had several offspring by his wife Rachel Cooper who he married in 1793. This coincides with the approximate year of John Andrew’s birth. William also lived in Jefferson County Tennessee, the same county that John Andrew would spend at least some of his life in. William moved to Alabama about 1830. John Andrew Provence shows up on the 1840 and 1850 census for Jefferson County so it is known he did not move to Alabama.

John Andrew Provence’s first offspring is believed to be John O. Provence born about 1812 which would put his marriage at about age 18 or 19.

I believe this is the likely father of John Andrew Provence.

5. John Junior is not well researched however it is possible that he had a son named John born about 1771 who later married Elizabeth Jordan. To date I am not aware of any research that places a John Provence as his offspring. This is not to say that such a thing is not possible. Naming a son John would have been in keeping with the custom of the time and the date of John Andrew Provence’s birth in 1793/94 would coincide with John/Elizabeth being about 20 years old.

John Andrew could be an offspring from an earlier marriage prior to John Province marrying Elizabeth Jordan.

A more unlikely scenario is that John Andrew Provence is a direct offspring of John Province Jr. He would have been born when John Province Jr. was about 34 so the age is possible. If John Province/Elizabeth Jordan is John Province Jr.’s son then it is unlikely that John Province Jr. would have named two sons John.

Finding a documented marriage date for John and Elizabeth Jordan would be helpful as would any census information from the 1800 or 1810 census. Thus far I have not found this information.

Please comment and add your own thoughts.

Dear Mr. Provance,
I thought you had a very good question, and in trying to satisfy myself I came across this web site that seems very knowledgeable

http://web.mac.com/charness1/Michael_Ernst_Harness,_Sr./Lord...

I also spotted this on the Library of Virginia

Northern Neck Land Office

The Northern Neck, or "Fairfax Proprietary," consisted of 5,282,000 acres located between the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers. In 1649, King Charles II, then in exile, gave this unsettled region to seven loyal supporters, including Lord Fairfax. By 1688 most of the region was owned by Thomas, Lord Culpeper. Lord Culpeper's daughter married Thomas, Lord Fairfax, in 1690, and the region became synonymous with the Fairfax name.

Agents of the Northern Neck proprietors issued the first land grant in 1690. Individuals purchased warrants for a specified amount of land in a particular location. The warrants were taken to a surveyer and the land surveyed. The plat and any accompanying papers were returned to the proprietor's office, and a grant was issued. In an effort to halt land speculation, an order was issued by the proprietor's office on March 26, 1765, forbidding the assignment of warrants or surveys. The Northern Neck Land Office continued to operate during the Revolution until Lord Fairfax's death in 1782. Fairfax family interest was terminated in 1808 when the last surviving heir sold his title to a syndicate. Until 1862 land grants in the Northern Neck issued by the commonwealth of Virginia were recorded in volumes maintained separately from the regular Land Office grants.

Sincerely,
Vicki Piper

Thomas Province: Speculation

I was in college when I first began researching the Provance roots in America. Like most of you dedicated researchers, I am also stuck on Thomas Province, and haven't been completely sold on the Purviance connection.

I was conducting some oral history on the family and interviewed a descendent of Robert McClain. She told me, second-hand, that a Washington, D.C. based genealogist had found a member of the Provance family in Spotsylvania, VA in 1728, and that he was an "indentured servant."

Unfortunately at the time I learned of this, I was a first year public school teacher, with a public school teacher's salary, and a wife and a child. I could not "pay" this genealogist the fee she was asking for a peek at her research. I have no other information to go with this.

However, what if this "indentured servant" was either Thomas Province or maybe even Thomas's father? Could there be a connection between this person and Lord Fairfax's land grant to Thomas?

Indentured servants were usually paid in land after their period of indenture. Do we know why Lord Fairfax granted land to Thomas?

Historically speaking, Fairfax was interested in boosting VA's claim to the western territory by filling it up with Virginians. That would be his prime motive. But why Thomas? What did Thomas do to earn this grant?

One more tidbit to throw into the discussion. In 1728, a "Thomas Parvin" arrived in Pennsylvania from Ireland. I have no reason to believe there is a connection. Just a matter of date coincidence and possible clerical error which, as we all know, was fairly common.

If I calculated her birth date from her death date on headstone (which i figure is more reliable then the spelling of names) she should of been born June 1, 1863 when counting back 20 yrs 10 months 25 days from the online 1883 Calendar.
Your birth year and the year on her headstone are off by two years. I checked the reading of the cemetery against the headstone and they both read 1863, too bad the Lavina/Luvina I found was born in 1839, perhaps her mother i wonder.

What did you find her birth date on? I do not find her on the vital stats board for WVA online, but they do not have all their records on, so they may not of had it posted yet. I also do not find her in the birth record books
I have looked in Birth Records Vol 11 1859 to 1866 Monongalia Co, Birth Records Vol I 1853 to 1858, Marion County births vol 11 1860 to 1870, Marriage Records Marion Co 1842 to 1867
I checked both since they are so close together. It is also possible she was a home birth and they never registered her birth but by 1860 they should have done that, clues clues where are the clue

Luvera was my great-grandmother and, yes, she was LUVERA AMMONS-PROVINCE. b. 04 JUNE 1861 and d. 25 APR 1882. Her son, my grandfather, HOWARD EARL PROVINCE, was 7 months old when she died. He, too, was born in Marion County, West Virginia, USA. I do not know anything about her lineage in the AMMONS family. I am researching that now. IF you have more info to offer me, please do so. Thanks - JP Morgan, jpmorgan@hotmail.com

Is the John Province that you have information on the father of Wm. Province, who married Rachel Cooper? If so, I would appreciate any information that you have as I can go no further back than William. Thank you George Province Dagnan cabdag@aol.com

David, I received some information that there was a John Province in Pa. , born betwee 1830 and 1840 that may be Wm.'s father. I haven't had time to check it out yet, though. I am in the middle of doing all four branches of my family tree. John might be someone that you have already checked out?george (cabdag@aol.com)

Thanks Jamie and sorry that I wasn't more specific. I know very little about them prior to coming to Madison, AL in the early to mid- 1800's. I think they were born in TN around the end of 1700's but Thomas parents may have been from PA? There is a strong possibility his mother name is Rachel. There is a Rachel that is the right age living nearby after they moved to Sand Mtn. in Jackson Co., AL but I am looking for proof and earlier ancestry information. Thank you.
