I authored a book on the 87th Pennsylvania - From Home Guards to Heroes: The 87th Pennsylvania and its Civil War Community - and have studied the regiment for several decades. I am always interested in learning new things about the men who served. By the way, he was born April 23, 1843, the son of Jacob & Jane Potts Prowell. He stood 5' 8" tall, had light hair and gray eyes, and described as having a "heavy build." He died October 15, 1911, and is buried in Burnside Cemetery in Clearfield County. I visited it many years ago.

Do you have a photo of George in uniform? Do any of his Civil War letters still exist? Do you know if his middle name was Frederick?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Prowell School on Valley Road, Etters, Pa.

Does anyone know if a record exists for the cemetery located behind what was once Prowell School, and later Eichelberger School on Valley Road, Etters, Pa. Several years ago I stopped at this old school house and walked up the hill and behind it is located what is left of an old cemetery. In the very early years, Land was donated for a school, church to be built, by Samuel Prowell, son of Capt. William Prowell. This land was located next to the Prowell Homestead. It is now owned privately. I took some photos of the old stones that are left and some names are Kaufman,Strominger, Miller and Grain. Deaths were between 1727 and 1887. My husband's uncle, went to school in this old school house and before he died he told me to stop there and check out the old cemetery, and that as kids they played in this cemetery. His uncle was 88 when he died and has been deceased for several years now. Just wondering if there might be some kind of record of who is buried there, as I am sure there were lots more buried here, but stones no longer exist. The old school building was used as a church as well as a school in the early years and traveling preachers are recorded as preaching there.

forgive me for not replying sooner have been away for a while. I got the bible frrom Bessie Dugans estate back in the 70s. She lived in Yokumtown Pa. House was torn down in 70s. The property was given to the church. Her sister Minnie married into the Prowell family, Sam eas her husband. He owned a mill on the york road. It was once a resteraunt. I have a blueprint showing a mill update. My grandfather was Ralph W Prowell he divorced my grandmother in the early 1920's. She was Ester Snyder. One of her sisters married a beshore. The family stills owns thw farm that was my great grandmas. I was once at Owen Prowells house but dont know how I was related to him..Around Etters Pa my grandfather was know as "Dutch" Prowell. The bible I have is very worn but is readable. Give me some time and I will send you some more info thanks Rick

Hello Eileen,
I am here to tell you that is my husbands grandfather, Owen James Prowell, his great grandfather is John W Prowell married to Willet. I have done lots of research on the Prowell's from York County, Penna. who decend from a James Prowell from Chester County, Pa. I tried to answer your inquiry on another website but it will not let me send to you for some reason, maybe because I am not registered with that site. Contact me at happypro@comcast.net and maybe we can go over what you are interested in. We just had a Prowell Reunion at Salem Church, across the road from the old Prowell Homestead on Valley Road, Etters, Pa. I gave a talk about the property and its line of ownership in respect to the Prowell's. For your information, Owen James Prowell is buried at the Salem Cemetery where we held the reunion. What would you like to know, I think I read in the other message that you are working with a sister in law and she may be related to this Prowell Line. Who is your sister in law? If I remember correctly, I believe there was a Prowell from Clearfield County, who married a Brown, are you related. I think this was a George Prowell, correct? And I think the town was Burnside, correct?

Chancy, I recently picked up the Prowell research again and just came across your post on James Prowell, Sr (b. 1800 TN)and wife Sarah. Her maiden name has been variously reported as OHanlon (OHanlain), Baird, and now, Paris. I think I've ruled out the Baird as a family confusion, but if you have any info on Paris, I'd appreciate your sharing. Birth VA about 1816?

Hello Kathleen,
I have been researching the Prowell family for several years,as I am married to a Prowell who also decends from the Capt Wm Prowell of Fairview Township, York County, Penna. You asked about several different people, I will give you the part of Bayler's. They sometimes spelled it Baylor. Michael Bayler married first wife Lydia Wolf May 17, 1843 in Newberrytown, Penna. and they had one son, William Ambrose Bayler. His second marriage was to Susan Prowell, fEBRUARY 14, 1852, Harrisburg, Penna., daugher of Samuel and Phoebe Brown Prowell, born Apil 7, 1825 and died January 2, 1871. They had 5 children. As to Phoebe Brown, she was the daughter of Jacob and Anna Marie Brown, I have no dates or other information on them other than they had two other daughters, Jane and Sarah. As for the immigrant James Prowell and wife Mary, they are still very much a mystery that I have yet to solve. I do have some records of him but do not know what happened to him or where he died and exactly what year he or his wife died. I do know that his property was sherifed 1767 and he was no where to be found. This was in Chester County, Penna. I have spent a lot of time and lots of money to travel and do my research and last year I printed a Prowell History that has about 9 thousand names and over 10 generations. I have all the information that I found until then printed in this history. I started with the immigrant James Prowell and his wife Mary and continued on until present day. If you would be interested in a copy of this history please contact me at happypro@comcast.net. THere is a Prowell Reunion every 2 years and the next one is July 2008. Again please contact me for information if you would be interested in attending. We talk about a lot of history.

Iowa) when I was in Burnside, and she told me that she was related through Dr. George F. Prowell's daughter, who married a doctor named Brown. She did not, however, have any information. George has a role in my recently published book, From Home Guards to Heroes: The 87th Pennsylvania and its Civil War Community.

Thomas Prowell, b. 15 Aug., 1756, England

This particular Thomas Prowell, we think, came from England and was married to Mary Agnes Roper. We have the lineage from that point also. Our research shows a Sarah being born 7 Mar., 1790 either in Williamson County, TN or Burke County, NC. The information also reflects that Mary Agnes also came from England. I have my doubts as to the accuracy of their birth place. I am inclined to believe it to be in PA. The 1805 Burke County, Morgan District tax roll lists Thomas as being there. if you have any information on these ancestors and would be willing to share it, I would be greatly apreciatative. Thanks.

Wondering if you had any received any information. I am doing research for my husband about his family. The only information that I have found is that his great-grandfather Joseph Prowell was from Columbus,MS and was born in 1878. I cannot find any records prior to this and wonder where Berbice is and whether or not you have access to any of the slave records. (My husband is African-American) and I am wondering if his ancestors descend from these slaves. Any help would be appreciated.
This is the Thomas Prowell I have been researching. This is the first time I have seen this, but I was aware that he divorced her and I do have a copy of his will. Capt. William Prowell and Major Joseph Prowell were his and Rachael's sons. My husband is decended from Capt William Prowell whose homestead is located here in Fairview Township, York County, Penna. Thank you so much for the information. It is very difficult to find any information on this Thomas Prowell and his father James Prowell who lived in Chester County, Penna. in the 1720 to 1765 time frame. James Prowell the immigrant and father of Thomas, had a farm located still along the Pughtown Road near French Creek. Have not been able to find any information as to how they got there and where they came from.

I own a set of York County History by George Prowell, he is in our family line. I have been trying for several years to find any information on James Prowell and his wife Mary, the immigrants. I have found the original property located in Chester County, Pa and visited the folks who live there a few years ago. And our family line if from Capt. William Prowell, who was born in Chester County, son of Thomas. His homestead however is here in York County, Penna. along with a Prowell family cemetery, that is on private property and not open to the public. But I am very interested if anyone has any information on James Prowell, who settled on the Welsh Tract of Chester County, along French Creek, and also lived at one time in the Charlestown area. I have found him on tax rolls, newspaper articles in Penna Gazette, have also obtained a copy of what was left of a copy of his lease to the one property. But after 1765, I can find no trace of him or his wife. Would also like any information on the daughter Mary, who married Richard Buck. Have found nothing on them. I have visited the gravesite of Major Joseph Prowell, located at Old Pine Churchyard in Philadelphia.

Hi Shirley and Darlene.
Been meaning to touch bases with you two again for a long time!

I hail from James M (or B or N?) Prowell b. 1842 Smith Co TN thru his son John Henry b. 1868 Crittendon Co KY.

My brother Charles returns today from a driving vacation thru southern IL, western KY and I've guided him through backroads from here in AZ through MapBlast and his cellphone, on a mission to find and photograph any family gravestones. He promises to upload digital photos from the "Garden of the Gods" area soon.

One fellow researcher you should get in touch with, Shirley, is Joe Galloway of southern IL. Another is Sharon Mosley of Princeton KY. Since the KY vital records before 1911 are gone, please take photos of everything Prowell you find!!

And keep us posted - I need a vicarious vacation :)

Darlene, we live 90 minutes apart now. If meeting a *cousin* in Phoenix interests you, let me know. Maybe we could rendezvous in an LDS library....or an Indian ruin!

Anne

Hello Troy,
Our Prowell Reunion has gone by and we had a nice group of about 90 Prowell's that attended. We talked a lot about our family history. We had a history display available on the family line of Capt. William Prowell, who settled in Fairview Township, York County, Penna. David Prowell, from Georgia attended and talked about the Prowell's living in the southern part of our country, like Ala,Georgia, Mississippi etc. We also talked about the Prowell's in Canada and that they came from Guyana. Capt. Wm's brother, Joseph Prowell, was a high sea merchant and had a planation in Guyana abt 1800. His planation was called " Washington", and he had 3 slaves. The slaves were free after his death and given money. That is according to his will. He died in 1805 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and is buried there at Old Pine Church Cemetery. I would be interested how far back you can trace your family line and perhaps there is a chance you are connected to our Joseph Prowell, the high sea merchant. I would like you to keep in contact with me, as there are several others that are interested in Joseph's history in our family. If I can answer any questions for you, please contact me. Maybe we can work together on this interesting family history.

I just stumbled upon this site and I am related to the Prowells in Canada. There are quite a few Prowells her in the U.S. that are related to the Canadians and we have some also in England. This group originated in British Guiana. We were all at a few weddings and this issue always comes up. That in some way connected to the Whales' Prowell. There has been lots of talk among us about a uprising that took place. I will be looking over your comments and will be spending some time on it.

Darlene,
The Prowell names in Ontario mean nothing to me. This is the first time I am hearing of them. I agree that it was common for slaves to adopt the name of their masters. My grandfather (Father's father) I believe, was mostly of african descent. I also believe there was some talk of a family connection to Barbados. Perhaps my eldest brother might know something more of this.
There was a famous slave rebellion in British Guiana, the Cuffy Rebellion...don't remember the date, more of this should be in some history book. The slave "Cuffy" who led the rebellion is now an acclaimed Guyanese hero. I believe there is now a Statue of this slave now in the city of Georgetown, erected after I left in 1968. Some of this information may be available on a Guyana Official website.

I can think of two famous books written by a "Edgar Mettleholtzer" - spelling may not be correct- "Kaywana Blood" and "Kaywana Stock". There and perhaps others he wrote may provide some information of slavery in Guyana. I'll try checking some more later.

Prowell Family Reunion, York County, Pennsylvania

A family reunion is planned for July 17, 2004 in York County, Pennsylvania. All Prowell related are invited along with their families. This reunion is held across the street from the original Capt Wm Prowell homestead which has the old Prowell family cemetery where our Capt Wm Prowell and several family members are buried. We will be having a short tour as a group to this cemetery. Since it is located on Private Land, this is the only time we can have a chance to visit the cemetery. Please contact me at my email address if you are interested and let me know how many are coming. happypro@suscom.net

Hello Ann, Nice to hear from you, but I do not live in the west. I live in York County, Pennsylvania. I had replied to Shirley, that here is York County, we have the homestead of Capt. William Prowell, son of Thomas and Rachel Griffith Prowell. Thomas is the son of James Prowell and his wife Mary, who settled in the Charlestown area of Chester County, Penna. They were in the Welsh settlement area. in mid 1700's. I have a copy of lease to their farm. I have even visited the farm, it is still in operating status. I have done lots of research both here in York County, and in Phila. area, even had work searched in England and Wales, without a lot of result in England and Wales. I would love to make the connection to the Prowell's in the Southern states, but as of yet that has not been possible. Shirley's James is not the York County James. It seems they used the name James alot. Also there is a Capt Wm Prowell, who also fought in the Rev War, but was in Virginia, have not been able to make a connection to our Prowell's with him either. If you can but any additional information to help connect us, it would be great. We are having a Prowell Reunion, July 17, 2004 here in York County and any Prowell is welcome. We will be touring the old Prowell Cemetery that is located on the homestead that used to belong to Capt. William Prowell. Anyone interested in coming can contact me at my email address.
