Was researching my husband's line when I came across your tree on Pruitt.
I noticed a couple of issues that I'm sure were probably caused by computer linking of similiar names and wanted to share with you. You have an awesome tree going an I'm sure you wouldn't want to perpetuate any errors.
My husband is Michael Pruitt son of Fred Pruitt. Fred was the son of Luther Columbus Pruitt who was the son of Moses Simpson Pruitt. "Simp" was the son of Jonathan Robert and Martha Pruitt. (Found in household together in 1880 census Cherokee Alabama) It seems that your info has crossed a bit between Jonathan Robert born 1790 and Jonathan Robert born 1823. Martha was not married to the senior. Sarah Pendergrass as well was married to a younger John Pruitt not Jonathan born 1823.
LindaPruittGentry:
Thanks for your response. I'm not sure whether or not Moses Pruitt and family were in Tennessee or not. There was a Moses and Jane Pruitt from there that I have checked out, but cannot make a connection. From what I can tell, they did the traditional migration from Virginia thru North and South Carolina into Georgia and out into Alabama where they were located during the civil war. The widows with children came to Texas in the 1890s.
Thanks again for your response. If I can be of help please contact me.
wdoyle38@hotmail.com

Shirley:
Were your Pruitts in the SC, and Al areas during the 1850s thru the 1890s? I am trying to work from Texas back to Shelby County, Alabama in the 1890s. My Pruitts came to Texas from that area during that time. They were widows with children. I am trying to work back through the maze surrounding the civil war. Moses died during the war and I believe one or more of his sons as well. Trying to get the names of his son(s) and the units they served in. The names you mentioned are not familiar to me. Thanks for your response.
wdoyle38@hotmail.com

I highly recommend the group above, they can walk you through your tree. At the moment we have found 8 distinct Pruitt/Pruett/Prewitt/Pruiett yDNA lines, only one of them traces themselves back to Henry.

Re: Virginia Pruitt DNA Research Group

If your family came through Pittsylvania (or nearby area) between early colonial and 1800 then you are eligible for this research. This is yDNA research, so someone in your family would have to be tested to connect.

Do you know if your particular Pruitt line came through this area at this time? Some Pruitt/Pruett/Pruiett lines have distinct yDNA lines connected them all ready. You can check here first to see: http://groups.ancestry.com/group/60509555

We expect that the Pittsylvania1700s group will hopefully connect more Pruitt/Pruett/Prewitt and their various early Virginian cousins together in the future. This time period in this part of Virginia should be a fertile place for these families.
One of the members started a new yDNA research group at Family Tree DNA to connect families from early colonial Virginia this morning. If your particular Pruett/Pruitt/Prewitt family came through Virginia in the 17th and 18th centuries (which many did) then this group might be helpful to you in the near future once it has been populated.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Pittsylvania1700s

MARY G. PRUITT (b 13 Oct 1843, d 1919 Ark.) grew up as an orphan in Mifflin, Henderson County, Tennessee. She was born in Georgia, but I don’t have any data on her parents. She married JEREMIAH DILLON PEARCE in 1866 and moved to Lonoke, Prairie County, Arkansas in 1868. Their children were WILLIAM WALTER PEARCE (b 31 Aug 1867, d 9 Jan 1870), CHARLES SAMUEL PEARCE (b 21 Nov1868, d 30 Oct 1932), APLESS LEE PEARCE (b 19 Dec 1870, 13 Dec 1943), HUBERT EDWARD PEARCE (b 25 May 1873 11 Dec 1949), IRENE FRANCIS PEARCE (b 16 Mar 1875 d 26 Oct 1957), and OSCAR COLLINS PEARCE (b 21 Sep 1879, 26 Oct 1954). Jeremiah Dillon and Mary moved to Durant Oklahoma around 1900 where he died. Some of his children stayed there after his death.

I have extensive data on the Pearce family and am looking for data on the Pruitt family.

I can be reached at pearceww @ rmi.net.
Re: Moses Pruitt of MO/KY, s/o Abraham Pruitt of SC/VA

A word of caution about the many published Prewitt/Pruitt/Pruett genealogies... most of them were done pre-DNA testing. DNA testing has shown that there were at least 6 distinct and unrelated families of these names in Colonial Virginia. Many have previously been combined and made to be related to the Henrico descendants of Henry when they really weren't.

To further complicate the situation, a number of these families lived in Pittsylvania/Halifax counties in VA and Spartanburg and Union counties in SC at the same time. Those were fairly common migratory paths.

Thomas (son of Henry) Prewitt did marry the widow Mary Chastain Ducre c 1719. It was likely a second marriage for him and as Mary would have been about 50 by 1830, I don't believe that the 2 of them had any children together.

I believe that court and other records indicate that Thomas (Henry) had a son Thomas (Jr) who was the father of Thomas III (known as Old Tygar Tom from his land on the Tyger River in SC), William, David, and Michael. This Thomas Jr also had a number of illegitimate children: Renney and Abraham Prewitt (Belue/Bellew), John Farmer and probably several others.

Thomas III was likely born c 1735. He was old enough to witness his father's deeds to Renney, Abraham and John in 1759 but young enough to have been drafted in the Revolutionary War. Per his pension statement, Thomas III's son William states that he served as a substitute for his father.

I would encourage anyone interested in one of the various spellings of this name to join the Pruett/Pruitt/Prewitt group at Ancestry for the latest research and results.

The Moses Pruitt (1810-1866) of Allen Co. KY, was the son of Abraham/Abram & Mahalah Hill, dau/o Elijah Hill & Susan Potter. This Moses Pruitt and his wife Candace Omohundro relocated to Lawrence Co. MO with his adult children where he died in 1866 at age 56. His Will is found in Mt Vernon (Mo) Court House as well as LCMO Historical Society publication, LCMO Probates, Vol 1, 1845-1874.
According to a series of Prewitt/Pruett/Pruitt histories by Richard A. Prewitt of Grimes, Iowa in 1979-1982, he published a series of volumes of Prewitt/Pruitt of Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia as well as a book of PPP Marriages including VA, TN, GA, SC, Indiana, Alabama & Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.
Moses Pruitt was one of 3 Pruitt brothers who married Omohundro sisters, dau's/o William Omohundro & Mary Claxton.
His 2 brothers were Obediah/Obed & Elijah Pruitt whose son Lamon married his cousin, Mahulda Pruitt, dau/o Moses & Candace.

Abraham Pruitt came from Spartenburg Co SC to Warren Co KY where some of his children were by Mahalah, and after her death he remarried a Nancy Miller and had 5 more children. He is sometimes referred to as the Abram Pruitt of Pruitt's Knob in Barren Co. KY.

Allen Co KY Pruitt brothers who married Omohundro sisters was defined when published as "The Omohundro Genealogy History" by Malcolm Hill Omohundro (1950) and can be found under Heritage Quest books on line. All Omohundro/Pruitt families are defined. There were 1,000 copies printed and put in national genealogy libraries.

Richard Prewitt's research gave several Virginia counties particularly, Halifax and Henrico Counties as early locations for Henry Pruet who came in 1654. His son Thomas married a Mary Chastain, his son Michael Pruett married Elizabeth Bright, a dau/o Tobias Bright of Spartenburg Co.

There is a family reunion of early pioneers who settled Barry/Lawrence County MO in the 1830's to early 1850's that included Brights, Pruitts & Spilmans of Allen Co. KY.

For more information of Virginia and South Carolina/KY Pruitts, contact me gawbuck@sbcglobal.net.

Jean

Hi Diane:
My Moses Pruitt was b. in Edgefield district, SC, in 1820, and I feel that he was a decendent of your Virginia and SC Pruitts but I cannot make the connection. He died of typhoid a few mos after enlisting in Capt. Hunley's company of the 18th Alabama Infantry at Talladega, Al. in June. 1861. According to Confederate military records, his spouse, Jane Pruitt, also b. in SC, petitioned the Confederate govt for his back pay and other entitlements and was awarded $106.00 in 1863. She was living in Harpersville, Shelby County, Al. at the time. I have other information if you are interested. Perhaps you can help fill in some of the blanks. Thanks,
Bill Doyle

This would be around the Martin, Dresden, Mackenzie Tennessee area in the late 30's to mid 40's. I have a photo of him with my dad (aka Benjamin, Buck, Bugfuzz, and Ben - Winstead).
If anyone can help me get more info on Wilburn it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't find Moses and Jane in Talladega in 1860. Was he married by 1850? He may be the M Pruett in Benton Co, AL in 1850. If so, then he's not descended from David and Amy and not related to them at all.

Marcia:
I think my Moses Pruitt was a ggrandson of David Pruitt and Amy Bright, but I cannot make the connection. Acc to his CSA mil records, he was b abt 1820, Edgefield dist., SC. Was living in Talladega Co., AL in 1861, when enlisted in Capt. Hunley's Co, 18th AL Infantry. Died three mos later of typhoid near Huntsville, AL. Wife, Jane, also b in SC, petitioned the conf, govt. for his back pay and other entitlements, and rec'd $106.00 in 1863. Can't find him in the 1850 census Carolina, Georgia or Al. What am I missing? Any help appreciated. WD

Kurt:
Hope you are still checking the message boards.
My Moses Pruitt was b abt 1820, in Edgefield District, SC. Was living in Talladega County, AL in 1861, when he enlisted in Capt. Hunley's Company of the 18th AL Infantry. He was 41 yoa acc to his CSA Military records. Spouse was Jane Pruitt, also b in SC abt 1820. Moses enlisted in June, 1861, and died in Sept. of that year of typhoid near Huntsville, AL. Is buried there w/others of the same fate. Jane petitioned the Confederate govt. for his back pay and other entitlements and was awarded $106.00 in 1863. All of this is documented in the Alabama State Archives.
Moses is my gggrandfather and I have been unable to trace him back any further. I have found those folks you have mentioned, but haven't been able to make a connection to my Moses. The only references made in the mil records is to his date and place of birth. Maybe you have something that I am missing...will share info. WD

How much have you done on your family tree? We got back to Davis Pruitt 1797 to 1881. Do you have this one on your tree? We can not find his parents yet. What state are you in? I am in Alabama. I hope to hear from you real soon.

Shirley Pruitt Steen
