Sarah Mabel Pugh did marry or have children.

Her "children" were the children and grandchildren of the nieces and nephews of her sister, Mary Annie "Molly" Pugh Stone. I don't know much about Aunt Mabel's brother's family since they're in New England, I believe. Mabel's sister Molly was my mother's father's mother. As a child and teenager we visited Mabel frequently along with my grandfather's sister's family since we all lived closer to Mabel.

Does anyone have any information on Elizabeth Roberts, b. 1804 in Caernarvon, North Wales. She married Humphrey Pugh probably before 1831 when their first son, John was born. She had all her children in Liverpool, England and she died there in 1876. I'm "stuck" and can't get the generation before her.

TIA
Where did your James D. Pugh live? My great-grandmother, Cornelia Pugh Thornhill, had a brother named James D. Pugh, born about 1869 in Campbell Co. Va. According to the census, this James Pugh was living in Rustburg, Campbell Co. in 1920, so this is probably not your James Pugh. Also I have no indication that this man was married.

Re: ST. ELMO PUGH

My name is Thomas Jefferson and I am the son of Lucious Jefferson who married Fannie Pugh in 1947 in Norfolk, Va.I visited Norfolk,Va in the year of 2004/2005 to research more regarding my father, Lucious Jefferson. While visiting in Norfolk I was able to obtain my father's marriage docment which indicated that he married Fannie Pugh in 1947. I also found his gravesite at Calvery Cementary. The gravesite which I located is the burial site of my father, Lucious Jefferson, Fannie Pugh Jefferson and her former husband St. Elmo Pugh and their young daughter who died at an early age. I notice that fresh flowers had been placed on this gravesite. The tombstone read on one side PUGH and on the other side JEFFERSON. I have tried since that time to contact members of the Pugh family to introduce myself.
I live in Los Angeles, CA. and would appreciate if you would contact me at the following numbers:
Thomas Jefferson (310-836-9222) or (310-916-6752)
If any offsprings of the Pugh family are living please contact me . You can also contact me at my E-Mail address: jpolite@att.net

Hopefully we can make contact with each other soon.

Thomas Jefferson

In 1998 (Reprinted 2001), the Mine Safety and Health Administration published a three volume index, Historical Summary of Mine Disasters in the United States:

Volume III - Metal and Nonmetal Mines - 1885 - 1998, 71 pages

These publications contain listings of both fatal and nonfatal accidents by date, name and type of mine, location, number killed or injured, and nature of the accident. Names of miners are not provided. However for the fatal accidents, there usually is provided a summary from the official federal accident report. These books usually only cover major fatal accidents claiming three or more lives and do not cover most nonfatal accidents. These books were initially issued as nine microfiches and are available at large libraries in the Government Publication Reference section under Call Number L 38.2:H 62/SUM./V.1-3.
From Volume III,
from page 11
Silver Bow No.2 Mine, Butte & Boston Mining Co, Butte, MT 1893Apr21, 9 killed. As a reult of a fire in the mine, nine men lost their lives. The fire was extinguished early on the morning of April 22, after 800 gallons of water a minute had been poured into the mine, which filled with water to the 600 foot level. The bodies of the victims were found on the 400 footlevel, showing that the men had climed to that level from the place where the fIre originated and were suffocated by the smoke.

from page 23, 1893Apr21, copper mine, Silver Bow No.2, butte, MT, 9 killed, mine fire; probably from candle at pump station.

This is all the information that I have on this accident. A newspaper article may have more information.

From Jerry,
http://www.genealogy.com/users/s/h/e/Jerry-Sherard/ “Mining Accidents U.S., Canada and Australia”
1893 Annual Report of the Inspector of Mines of the State of Montana, usually Library Call Number TN24.M9 A3.

from page 35, 1893Apr21, Evan Pugh, Silver Bow county, Silver Bow Shaft No.2, occupation miner; Men suffocated on 400, 500 and 700 foot leves. Fire caught in 500 foot station while the pumpman was on surface. The discovery of the origin of the fire was never made. Five men were taken out the second day and four bodies rescued on the ninth day.

from pages 40 & 41, THE SILVER BOW MINE HORROR.
RiCARD Andrews, Edward Pascoe, Evan Pugh, Antone
Beava, James Mattio, Frank Gerard, Samuel Robette,
Thomas Gray, Richard Trembath.
The most horrible mining accident during the year occurred on April 2 1st when nine men were imprisoned by fire in Shaft No. 2 of the Silver Bow mine at Butte, where all of them lost their lives. The names heading this report are those of the unfortunate miners. The mine is owned and operated by the Butte and Boston Mining Company.
The mine was being developed by a force of eighteen men,
nine on each shift. At 9:30 a. m. John Kramer, pumpman at the 500 foot station, went to the surface to procure oil. In about one hour he returned to the station and found it on fire. When going down to the 500 Kramer saw Evan Pugh near the shaft at the 400 foot level. Kramer soon returned from the burning station and told him if he wanted to save his life to get on the cage. Pugh called back telling Kramer to "wait until he could get his partner." Kramer
waited as long as he could stand the heat and until his hands and clothing were badly biu'ned, (Kramer's evidence before the coroner's jury), and then went to the surface. The nine men imprisoned below were on levels as follows: Two on the 400, three on the 500, and four on the 700 foot level. From the latter level there was no possible way of escape excejot by the shaft. The men on the 500 and
400 might, however, have passed through the connections into shaft No. 1 and from there reached the surface. It is highly probable these five men became bewildered by the density of smoke until escape was no longer possible and met death by suffocation. Every means suggested by human ingenuity was used to save the imprisoned men, and not until every practical idea had been tried without
success, was the mine flooded with water. On the morning of the 22d, the day following the fire, the bodies of Pugh, Andi-ews, Pascoe, Beava and Mattio, were rescued from
the mine.
After the most thorough investigation, assisted by the B. & B. Co. officials, I find it impossible to learn just how the fire originated. The pumpman kept a large torch, (a tin can with handle on one side and a spout containing a heavy round wick on the other) in the station for the purpose of working around the shaft where it was quite wet. He states, under oath, that before going to the surface he set the torch on a block of wood about twelve or fifteen inches from
the division of the two compartments of the shaft and that the torch was in its place and still burning when he went down and discovered the stiation on fire. A candle was also kept burning on a shelf-shaped tin which was nailed up against the timbers. Whether the fire was caused by the pumpman's torch, or the candle on the tin, or whether
one of the miners (who were in the habit of waiting in the pumproom for blast explosions and to eat dinner), in lighting a new candle pushed the old snuff out of the candle stick and left it burning on the floor, which was saturated with oil, is only conjecture.

from Jerry

i'm trying to track down family stories of huguenot ancestry.
i have a connection at john pugh b1735 & sarah reams b1730, the reames/reams are certainly of french huguenot descent. there appears to be a number of their descendants here. i wonder if any other lineages preserved the heritage, it should be a strong lutheran with anti-catholic overtones.

rmwilliamsjr@gmail.com

Hi Nora What a quick response. I will go through my files and see who I have in the Blaine family. Perhaps after Christmas I will look them up in the tel. directory and see if I get anywhere. As I may have Canon Blaine was the parish priest in Tubbercurry (in fact his grave is outside the Church door) I was amazed to see he had the name on Ambrose as that is a Pugh family name. My Dad spoke about him as his cousin.

You are correct Pugh is a very strong Welsh name but again
Dad told me that we were originally de Pughs and originated from France. Incidentially he spoke French fluently and all my family love France and the culture and Jane my daughter has a place in the South of France. She and her family also
speak French - I love it and can get by.

Will get in touch soon.
Evelyn
