Reading The Big Burn book about 1910 forest fire near Wallace Idaho, I was intrigued/impressed with Wallace ID area USFS ranger Ed Pulaski
Being a genealogist, I looked for a family tree on him.

Wife of Big Ed Pulaski, they married in 1900 and lived in Burke, Shoshone
County, Idaho during early marriage years. They had a daughter together named
Elsia C. Pulaski, aka "Elsie." During the time of the fire, they lived in
Wallace. Emma wrote a seven page essay "My Experience as a Forest Ranger Wife"
after Ed's death. Her husband is famous for two things in the realm of fighting
wild fires: Developing the Pulaski tool used still today by the USDA Forest
Service; Saving 40 lives in the Great 1910 Fire, by leading his fire fighting
crew into an abandoned mine up Moon Pass Road. Daughter, Elsia, married on 18
Dec 1920 in Wallace to John Feroglia.

Inventor. Hero of Great 1910 Fire of USA Pacific Northwest. Among the
first-ever US Forest Service Rangers. Developed Pulaski Tool still used today
by USDA Forest Service Rangers across USA. Saved lives of forty forest fire
fighters by holding crew at gunpoint in abandoned mine tunnel near Wallace,
Idaho. All men overcome by smoke and passed-out. Five died. Ever after, he
carried the scars on his hands and face from keeping fire at tunnel entrance.
All tunnel survivors spent months in hospital. Respiratory difficulties
remainder of their lives from fire injuries. 1910 fire destroyed nearly 5,000
square miles in two-day firestorm pushed by 80 mile per hour winds. Eighty-plus
people died. Pulaski arrived in Wallace, Shoshone County, Idaho at age sixteen,
working mines and mills for 25 years. USDA Forest Service Ranger 2 years when
fire occurred. Married and had a daughter named Elsia C. Pulaski, aka: "Elsi."
Monument to him and all fire fighters of 1910 fire, outside Wallace, Idaho on
Moon Pass road to Avery, Idaho. Monument online photo at:

Oregon, has extensive exhibit on USDA Forest Service history, featuring Big Ed
Pulaski.

I found a census for 1860 showing his mother? Ann, and brothers, George and Edward. I am searching for info on him too. Anything else on Alice Burke? I'm wondering how they met with her in Kansas and him in DC. Thanks for letting me know his son's name was George. He died young, didn't he? I wish I would have asked Aunt Gene more about them.

My father is a foster child from N.Y.C. so the information i have is sketchy. My father, Richard has a twin brother named Alfred and another brother named "Tony" or "Anthony." they believe their mother' name was "Mary Pulaski" she either married someone with the last name James or at least fathered these three children. Rumor has it that brother Tony once tried contacting my father several times but my father never made himself available to him. Mary might have a sister living in Vermont.
