Hi Diane, I've sent an invitation to view Elvira's tree. Sadly, despite Punchard being a rare name, we do not know which part of England William came from. In the 1600's the wider family had groups mainly in Devon, Norfolk & Suffolk and all of these had folks move to London at some time or other. Ancient records are often incomplete, but we'll keep looking!

kind regards Beverley in England

Hi Beverley, I have been working on the U.S. Punchards for many years. My aunt gave me a ton of handwritten information on the Punchard line prior to her passing and I've been working from it and adding to it for years.
My great grandmother was Elvira Lucretia (Ella) Punchard married to Oliver McElya.

I've never been able to get my Punchards from Salem, Mass to England, though. Perhaps you can help?

Warmly, Diane Larson

I have done a copious amount of research for a Punchard descendant in Texas, that goes beyond your great-great-grandfather, John Edwin Punchard, Senior's ancestors--back to the late 1700's in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Your 1700's ancestor was Joseph Hovey Punchard, b. 1771 in Francestown, Hillsboro Co., New Hampshire. In 1832, Joseph applied for admission into Stephen F. Austin's Colony; his brother, Dr. William Punchard also applied for admission into S. F. Austin's Colony in 1832, and was a large landowner in Austin Co., TX (Bellville area); and Milam and Bell counties, Texas, plus other counties.

Fascinating family, fascinating saga. The Punchard's Austin County lands lie about 10 miles from my home in Brenham, Washington County, TX. One of Dr. William Punchard's deeds Austin County deeds was witnessed by William Barret Travis...

Please contact me if you would like further information; I am in the midst of writing a "bookett" on your Punchard ancestors so if I do not get back to you right away, I will get back to you.

Betty McDade
wrenmarie@sbcglobal.net

Hello Rob

Harriet appears on a large Suffolk Punchard family tree which is too large to show here. So if you would like to contact me on ella15@ntlworld.com I can send you her tree going back a few hundred years. There is also historical information on the Punchard family tree at this USA library website:

http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/FH1...

Susanna was joint 5th child (with her twin Jeremiah) of 18 children born to Jeremiah and Sarah Ranson. He was an agricultural labourer and parish clerk for at least the last 30 years of his life in Rattlesden.

I hope that this is helpful and look forward to hearing from you.

Regards Beverley Davies
Devon Punchard Branch

Beverley, my gg grandmother was called Harriet Eliza Punchard b Onehouse, Stowmarket in 1843, I think her mother was called Susan b 1821? Susan later married an Edmund Stiff and Harriet became his stepdaughter. Harriet married John Revens in Drinkstone in 1870. I know little else and wondered if you have any further information.

My Phoebe Punchard married Leonard Lammas and one of their children,Martha, was born in 1844 in Norfolk, England. I also have a marriage certificate for a Phoebe (possibly of the right age) who married William Mobbs. Martha went to New Zealand after her marriage. There is a story that this Lammas family had used a different name in Norfolk. Martha was called Martha Griffen in NZ before she married George Moffitt, or married a second time. I have some census records which appear to relate to these people. Mary

Re: PUNCHARD

Opinions vary, but the most common explanation is that it derives from the old French 'pont chardon' meaning 'guardian of the bridge'. Pontecardon is near Rouen in France. In 1066 Robert de Punchardon, whose family lived in the Manor of Pontecardon, fought with William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest and was rewarded with much English land, most of it in Devon. One of these areas Heanton subsequently became Heanton-Punchardon and was the manorial home of the family for several generations. The Punchardon name became Punchard over time, and about 150 years ago the Puncher derivative started appearing.
There are other versions or the origin of the name, but this seems more likely. Further information available at my web site http://www.puncher.co.uk/gen_surname.php

My Punchard line descends from William Punchard, born about 1645, probably on the Isle of Jersey, England, and who came to America about 1666, more than 100 years before the events you describe. All of the information I have on his descendant family happens on the North American side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Do you have in your book a Phoebe Punchard who was married at Denton, Norfolk, England on 11 October 1791 to James Crowe of Bedingham, Norfolk, England. On that same day, James' sister Susanna married William Puncher (Punchard) at nearby Bedingham. It would seem that brother and sister married brother and sister, but Phoebe does not appear on any list of siblings of William Puncher (Punchard). With the possibility that Phoebe and William could have been cousins instead of brother and sister, I am still searching for proof of her parentage. Any help would be wonderful and greatly appreciated.
