I am looking for information on Andrew J Purcell, who married Clementine in 1892. I believe her last name was Hummel but have also found it listed as Scheudler. That's where the information stops. They are my great grandparents. I know they both passed away in Lansing, MI but can't find any other information pertaining to her. I am looking for her parents names.

Anyone looking for Michael William PURCELL in the 1910 Census? Found something interesting/funny. He was listed as Ned W. PURCELL, living in Colorado Springs. His wife, Catherine, and children are all listed (presumably) correctly, same as on the 1920, and 1930, for those children still living at home.

Here's a link to the FamilySearch.org page where this indexed info is listed: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MK4Q-GBH

Kinda got a kick out of "Ned"... did Michael tell the census taker that, or what?!

Liz

PURCELL - Co. Clare Ireland & Chicago IL

Although connected to me only by marriage, not blood, I thought I'd post what info I have in case someone might have a connection. Hopefully a connection would provide clues for me. Judie Mason, Chicago IL

John Griffin and Mary Ratchford both from Co. Clare immigrated to Chicago with their 6 children sometime between 1850/1860 - 6th. child b. Ireland c.1848. By mid 1860 census the family was here in Chicago. John and Mary's oldest child was Margaret who married James Mason, brother of my gr grandfather Matthew Mason. My Mason line was from Athlunkard/Parteen, Co. Clare. I think all these folks might have been in New York for a time before going on to Chicago and, because I can't find Chicago marriage record for Margaret. I found a passenger ship record for one Margaret Griffin leaving Limerick on the ship "Victoria" arriving in New York Aug 23, 1851 but, don't know if this is the correct Margaret.

Margaret's sister, Bridget b.c. 1842 married bet. 1860/1870 to Thomas Purcell b.c 1858 Co. Clare.....big age difference so I don't know how accurate the dates. Bridget died in 1876 after having had two children, John Francis (aka Frank) and Catherine. Thomas then m. Mary Whelan b.c.1862 Ireland and has another son James J. John Francis died without having married. Catherine may have m. John Fell. I don't have any further info for James J.

Next there is Patrick Purcell b.c.1850/55 Co. Clare m. Hanora Barry/Berry b.c.1852 Ireland. Hanora died in 1899 after having six children - Nellie, James, Mary (m.Edw.Kelly), Edward, John and Michael.

Third brother is James Purcell b.c. 1861/63 Co. Clare m. Mary McNamara b.c. 1868 Ballysteen, Co. Limerick. James and Mary had John, Thomas, Mary, Katherine and John E. (aka Emmett).

Fourth brother is Michael Purcell b.c. 1863. I have one record stating he immigrated in 1879. Michael d. 1902 having never married.

Well, well! Howdy Doody Miz Liz! It has been awhile. Good to see you "hanging out" again. I've been quite busy and only sporadically working on my genealogy but, hope to get back at it soon. I did discover the Purcell connection (marriage not blood) to my Mason line but, unfortunately, it's not your Purcell line. These Purcells are definitely from Co. Clare. If and when we can obtain more information about Patrick Brazill and his wife Margaret Mason - parents of Johanna Brazill-Purcell - I think this would be where our connection would be found. According to Steve's research and an interview with his Uncle Thomas Purcell or his grandfather Charles Purcell, Johanna came to the US from Co. Clare with her parents but, neither Steve nor I have able to determine where Patrick and Margaret lived/died/were interred. Maybe it was in Irish Creek, KS where Charles was born or in Nobel Twp., Marshall County where James Purcell's older brother John bought property and invited his brothers to join him. James and Johanna along with the other Purcell brothers did move to KS from Chicago. This is why I think maybe the info for Patrick Brazill and wife Margaret Mason might lay in KS records. The 1880 census does not show Johanna's parents residing with them. Let's see if we can keep in touch and crack this case :)
You can reach me at czechmail.jita@yahoo.com or judith.mason@me.com

Look forward to talking more.

Hi Bev,

Cousin Liz Sullivan McCrary here. Hope all is well with you!

I wanted to update the info in your post above about James and Johanna PURCELL'S son, Michael PURCELL (to differentiate between James' brother Michael PURCELL who was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, that you also mention.)

I will have to dig out the papers stored in the attic to give you exact dates, but son Michael moved to Colorado Springs, El Paso County, CO, and became the County District Attorney. He may have started a law practice before that, I hadn't heard that before. I seem to recall that son Michael was James and Johanna's first born child (will verify that from paperwork.)

He later moved to Casper, Natrona County, Wyoming where he was again the County District Attorney. Teapot Dome is also located in Natrona County. The Teapot Dome Scandal occurred during 1922-1923. Michael and his wife Kate (FLAHERTY) moved *before* the scandal was uncovered. Michael was never implicated in it.

I researched this pretty thoroughly, because I was curious about his time in Natrona Co. There is no evidence that Michael was involved in the Teapot Dome Scandal. All the culprits were at the Federal level. Pres. Harding's Interior Secretary Fall gave out oil leases w/o opening up competitive bidding. He was later found guilty of accepting bribes, presumably from the two oil companies who did get the oil leases. (Info from the Wikipedia, Teapot Dome Scandal page.)

In fact, Michael and Kate had left Natrona County ca. 1921-1922, moving to Los Angeles. His daughter Anna PURCELL SULLIVAN, who was my grandmother, and her husband Richard Barry SULLIVAN, moved with her parents to Casper, as well as to Los Angeles. In 1929, Michael and Kate were living at 1712 Crenshaw Blvd. I'm attempting to look them up in the 1940 census; hopefully, they were still living there 11 years later!

Supposedly, Michael was a County District Attorney somewhere in Southern CA. My uncle, Roger SULLIVAN, told me it was Riverside Co., so I researched that, but was told by Riverside County that he hadn't been the prosecutor there. I never looked into the possibility that it might have been LA County, or another (much) smaller county nearby. (I'll put that on the list of things to do!) Michael did have a private law practice in SoCal, however.

At some point, Michael and Kate moved to Palm Springs, Riverside County, CA. He died in 1955, prior to my birth later that year, while Kate had died sometime before that. He lived to a ripe old age (into his 90s,) and even remarried, to a woman we called "Aunt Mary." I have her info stored, and can provide that if needed. She died in Los Angeles in the 1970s.

I hope this clears up (somewhat) any confusion about the chronology of Michael PURCELL, son of James and Johanna PURCELL.

I'm working at rebuilding my database of family genealogy (misplaced the CDs on which I'd saved the info.) All my paperwork is upstairs, and I'll be dragging it down soon. So if you have any questions, please do write back!

Thanks for all your posts over the years, I've enjoyed catching up, and reading the anecdotal stories!

Liz
new email gawdess7@gmail.com

Hi Judie,

It's Liz McCrary. I'm just now getting back into family research, and I'm so happy to see you found a Mason link to the Purcell family! Which Purcell brother did Bridget, sister of Marg. Griffin, marry?

I seem to have misplaced the CDs I saved all my research on, but I do have a large file box of paper backup up in the attic. In the meantime, I'm piecing back together some of the data from checking back in here, and saved emails from various cousins.

Do you have your findings online somewhere that I could go look them up? BTW, the four Purcell brothers who came to Chicago, (John, Michael, Patrick, and James Michael,) were from County Tipperary. They came over in the early 1850s, I seem to remember 1852, but don't quote me... yet! Are they the same family that Bridget married into? Maybe you've found another set of PURCELL brothers, who are actually from County Clare, and I'm totally mistaken!

It's been awhile since we wrote each other! The email I'm using now for genealogy is gawdess7@gmail.com. Purplegenie@comcst.net is still active if you want to use that. (I check them all!) If you have general genealogical info that others might benefit from, I hope you'll post it here. Feel free to email with anything, though.

Hope all is well there.

Your cousin! Liz

I understand Ned Purcell had lots of descendants from his own children, and I love to read some of the relatives of my great great grandmother Elizabeth with her brother's children, I am so please to learn from Tamati, yes your grandfather is my great grandmother's Faleu's brother. Great great grandmother Liz got more than seven brothers, and I think only two of them are sisters one is known as Adeleine. I did not know until I was ten we always go to Malaela for the Purcell's reunion every 26 December. We are the true blood of Purcell, I have known now I have a lots of uncles and aunties around the world that is the story from my grandmother

Leslie,
It's been a very long time since we corresponded and I just happened upon our messages. Since that time, I did discover that Bridget Purcell mentioned in my query was the sister of Margaret Griffin (m. James Mason). Bridget was married to one of the Purcell brothers I'd metioned. I have more information for this Purcell family if you would like to have it. However, be patient as my computer crashed and I'm in the process of trying to retrieve data.

Judie Mason
Chicago IL

Just stumbled across your post. VALENTINE HAMPTON is definitely connected to my family. SIDNOR HAMPTON, Valentine's son by his first wife, (FRANCES CAMPBELL) raised my great grandmother (ELIZABETH PATRICK) natural daughter to (FRANCES HAMPTON & SAMUEL PATRICK).

There were quite a few Hamptons of the same generation in Mendota, Virginia who married in the same circle of friends and neighbors. Brothers and sisters? Possibly.

Any information on Valentine would be helpful in putting the pieces together.

Purcell Bible Entries (Ohio area)

The following is a transcription from the Purcell Family Bible that my Aunt has--she wrote down the entries and sent them to me. There may be errors and/or omissions as I haven't actually laid eyes on this since I was a little girl.
Charles W. Purcell

I am looking for any information as to the parentage of Charles W. Purcell, born around 1826. In the 1860 census, he listed himself as being born in Baltimore, but more likely he emigrated from Ireland in the mid 1840s. He joined Ringgold's Flying Artillery Battery in Baltimore and served in the Mexican War. He was a daguerrotypist in Cincinnati and Indianapolis prior to the Civil War. Apparently, he was also Volunteer Fire Chief in Indianapolis in 1855. He enlisted in U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant in the 18th Regiment Indiana Infantry and was deployed to St. Louis, Missouri. Subsequently, he enlisted in the 12th Regiment Cavalry, Missouri State Militia on 23 Jan 1862 and was killed at the Battle of Pilot Knob on 27 Sep 1864.

His widow Sarah Jane Ferree (or Ferry) lived in Indianapolis following the war, until her death in 1904. Charles and Sarah had 3 children. My great grandfather William H., a son Charles T. that apparently died around 1902, having never married. The third child was Mary Purcell. She was born in Missouri in 1864 and looks to have lived mostly with her mother and brother Charles in Indianapolis after that. She also had not married as of 1900 and I can find no mention of her after that.

Any clues as to the parentage of Charles W. Purcell, or any information about his daughter Mary would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
John Francis Purcell-Wife Alice Gertrude Langham.

John came from Ireland and immigrated as a young lad with his parents to NZ. I now Know that his Parents were John and Ann Purcell. He married Alice Gertrude Langham in Sydney. They lived in Wellington St in Auckland and had 5 children. They lived with Alices Parents. After John died in 1906 Alice remarried to Edwin Holloway. She died and was buried in Christchurch. I believe that she lived with her daughter Elsie Gittos. I wonder if anyone has any photos of any of them also maybe knows if John had brothers and sisters. Any info would be great...regards Bonita
