Hi Pauline
Just came across Jabez Purchas in the 1881 Census whilst looking for my great grandad, Robert William Stanhope aged 1 and listed as a cousin and there the trail of his father stops. I know his mother was Charlotte Stanhope nee Hammond . Robert William's Father was Henry Stanhope at birth but on his Marriage Certificate was shown as Samuel Jabez Stanhope.
I wondered if you had come across any Stanhope's in your search?
Regards
Jan Frost
Note sure if the reply came to this list also so I will post it here also.

Have you researched the google books site? http://books.google.com/books
There is a book called THE GENEALOGY OF THE PURCHASE FAMILY in Britain and Southern Africa. You can pull it up by title... a portion of the book is there in preview and might help you locate origins of the surname prior to 1750 (actually back to 870 A.D.) Very interesting read. The first few pages are online and a statement is indicated that some of the records were burned that marked the Christenings from 1689-1690 and more. But what is there is worth reading.

Leslie Barker Thomas

Does anyone have any information about John Purchase or ANY member of the Walsall/Cheshire family of Purchases, especially deep history before 1750? I would dearly love to see photo's of any of his descendants or have any contact about anyone in that family. I am descended from John Purchase through his son. I would love to know why the family moved from Walsall to Stoke-on-Trent too.
Thanks,
A Fellow Purchase!

Jeff, thank you for the additional information. I've been able to identify that my William Henry Purchase Comer b. 1860 was born to mother Comer, and he was given the name William Henry Purchase for the man who fathered him.

I had hoped that William Purchase had an honorable reason for skipping out on his family obligation. The sinking of the ship seemed like an honorable coincidence. Guess it is not to be, because your info is so logical.

Other than your previous report of William PURCHASE being i court for attempting to desert the ship Caroline in 1860, I've found no other corroborating information on the elusive William Henry Purchase.

If you identify additional information, please share. Thanks for the offer of contemporary press reports of the ship Caroline's sinking, but it sounds doubtful that it would help my search. Thanks for the distinction of the Ship Caroline and the schooner Caroline. Apparently Caroline was a popular name for ships.

I think it quite likely that the William PURCHASE who was in court in 1860 for attempting to desert the ship Caroline was not on the schooner Caroline which sank off the Longships lighthouse, Cornwall in January 1861, as that may well have been a different vessel, of only 101 tons, registered at Llanelly. All five men lost are described in a contemporary press report as being 'natives of Llanelly'. In the 'Lloyds List' nearest in date to the events that I could access, for 1856, there were over a dozen UK vessels with that name. Clay, if you want copies of the relevant press reports, contact me by message via Ancestry or search for my email address on the Glamorgan Rootsweb mailing list.

Our Purchase line connects with Charles Haddon Spurgeon - the famous minister who built the Spurgeon Tabernacle in London which drew thousands of worshipers. It is still there but has much smaller congregations now. I visited it a few years back and they have a library/store with books about Rev. Spurgeon.
I left them so material. His sister connects directly to my husand's father, Harvey Spurgeon Purchase.
I don't know if this is the Sergeon/Spurgeon you are looking for. The entire Spurgeon line including photos is in our book.
Nancy

Kathleen,
I have Thomas who had come over here in 1632 with George Way his partner in the 'Pejepscot Patent,' a large tract of land on both sides of the Androscoggin River in Maine. (He was returning to New York in 1630 on the ship "Lyon.") His son Thomas II sailed to England to obtain a second patent of land and was lost at sea. He was claimed officially dead in 1684. Thomas III was born 'just before or just after his father sailed"
Thomas I married Elizabeth Andrews of Saco, Maine. She was reported to be 24 and he a vigorous 80. He lived to 101.
Joan Purchase, sister of Thomas I, I believe, married Bernard Capen who came to New England.
See John Winthrop's Journal, Planters of the Commonwealth, History of York, Maine, Search for the Passengers of the 'Mary & John.' Also see Ancestors of American Presidents,1989, as Aquila Purchase' daughter, Abigail Purchase bap. 1624 at Holy Trinity, Dorchester, Dorset m. Sampton Shore and they were the ancestors of President Millard Fillmore.
Other than that I don't know a lot about these early Purchases to New York but they were from Dorset, as were my husband's ancestors. The only passenger positively known is George Way of Dorchester, Dorset. The following named persons probably came in this ship, as they were granted lots in Dorchester immediatelly upon its arrival: Aquila Purchase of Dorchester; Mrs. Anne Purchase, Oliver Purchase, and Sarah Purchase." Mrs. Anne, Oliver and Sarah Purchase were indented under Aquila Purchase's name, indicating that they were family. Their destination is listed as Dorchester, Massachusetts.
A Thomas Purchase, Gentlemaan, came to America in 1628 (age c51 yr) having received a grant for an enormous tract of land in Maine with brother-in-law George Way of Dorchester, Dorset, England. They formed a company of investors for the Pejepscot Patent (near Brunswick) Maine.
More is written of Thomas in The History of York Maine, Vol. 1, also by Charles E. Banks, republished by Old York Historical Society, York, Maine, 1990.
This line of early Purchases to America is written up briefly in my book "The Genelaogy of the Purchase Family ...descendants of James Purchase (1689/90-1723/24)" by Nancy & Graham Purchase, available for $20+ from Lulu.com The early Purchase' mentioned above are not related, as far as we know to my husband's James Purchase, but they all came from Dorset so . . .
Nancy
Jane. He was the son of Stephen (1788-1825) m. Mary Phippard. Graham descended from Stephen's brother George Lambton Purchase.
Stephen and Jane had Stephen George (1847or55 -1929)who went to Cape Town, SA m. Elizabeth Margaret Jones (1861-1903). I have a photo of Arthur Edward Walter Purchase with his father Stephen George which I obtained at "Arthur Purchase and Sons, Wine Merchants of Chichester since 1780"
Stephen George m. Hendrina Matilda Wilhemina Reese.
The complete line is followed in the book.
Nancy

Purchase line through Nancy Purchase m. Stephen Dunwell

What I have so far:
1. Thomas Purchase about 1700 born probably in England. He may or may not have been the son of the Thomas Purchase who was commissioned to come to the Americas to buy or claim land for England. Perhaps the son of the 3rd known Thomas Purchase who may have been the son of this Thomas Purchase.
Confusion which has been worse confounded by the fact that there were three Thomas Purchases; that two of them married women whose Christian names were Elizabeth; that there were three Elizabeth Purchases, two of whom married men each named John Blany; and that two of Purchase sons married sisters surnamed "Williams". It will be sufficient to state for the purposes of this communication that Thomas Purchase, who was born about 1576 and died in Lynn, Mass., in 1678, a centenarian, married, first, the infamous Mary Gove (who died 1655), and, second, Elizabeth, widow of Richard Pike of Falmouth, Maine, and that after the death of Purchase she married for her third husband, John Blany, sr., of Lynn. Whether or not this line is from that line remains to be seen.

2. Thomas Purchase 1722-1825 died New York.
Most researchers indicate that this Thomas Purchase married a woman by the name of Baite Thomas. But there doesn’t seem to be any further information about her. Another researcher indicated her name was Elsjen Beatty... Elsjen was the daughter of John and Mary Brink Beatty - most have her married to Jacob Middaugh with no mention of a Thomas Purchase.

3. Two sons:
Robert 1763-1860 born and died in New York. Married 4 times = Elizabeth Abbott, Betsey Wilson, Sarah VanGorder, and Eliza Waterman. Children: Elizabeth, Nancy, Samuel, Milo, Oliver, William, Erastus, Mary, Sarah, and Leman.

Philip 1773-1856 listed on 1850 Lenawee, Michigan census with wife Rebecca Conklin. Had 6 known children = Thomas, Robert, Raymond, Louisa, Anne, and Christopher.

4. Nancy Purchase 1790-1852 m. Stephen Dunwell - they had 11 children. Daughter Lucetta b. 1814 m. John G. Barker.

Leslie Barker Thomas

*Thanks* so much!

Great advice too! "Purchase" is such a common and often non-genealogical name. There's a city in New York named "Purchase" as well as the common verb, "Purchase."

There are several references in out-of-print books or books that can search for you surnames using http://books.google.com/books For some names you need to add a bit more info - for example using just the surname "Purchase" won't bring up the information you want but ways to buy books. So use "Purchase genealogy" and it will show you a few references using that phrase. "Purchas" was used on many of the early records. Also using the first name with "Purchase" will bring up some hits. Using both his and her surnames will often bring up a history of that family. I've had good luck using the first and last name and location in finding family.
Just a few thoughts that my help someone...

Leslie Barker Thomas
Descendant of Nancy Purchase 1790-1852 m.

Thanks for your reply, Alexis. I am so intrigued about the name especially as I know, from having lived there and knowing people from there, that it is common in Somerset and other parts of the South and South West. If you look at a distribution map, you can see this and you can also see a blob of Purchases in and around Walsall, West Midlands. But they are the only ones! I can trace them [my family] back to the 1500's as Locksmiths. Someone told me that Purchase is a strong traveller name too and I have wondered, with the persecution and 'ethnic cleansing' of the gypsy race through history, had my lot travelled up from Somerset or elsewhere to become part of a respectable trade in the Birmingham area, the centre of the metalwork industry? I shall never know for sure, but I can only assume they did move to the Midlands from the South for whatever reason.
Just as a matter of interest, and forgive me if this sounds strange, but do you have 'dark skinned' people in your family? My dad and his dad were quite dark skinned [no other noticable features] and I tan very dark as does my dark skinned son and one daughter! Another intrigue! If anyone else has Mediterranean looks in their Purchase family I would love to know!!!!
Alexis, please do let me know anything and very good luck in your research.

best wishes
Pauline

Hi Pauline
Thanks for your reply. Am still in the very early stages of researching the Purchase family but will let you know if I come across any of your links. As far as I know my line came from Clatworthy in Somerset and John Purchase was b.1807. His father was also John and he married a Jane Thomas. As you said, "It's an unusual name so..." - who knows??
Alexis

Hi,
Have seen your message via Ancestry. We must be related somewhere as Purchase is a reasonably unusual name!! However, it isn't through your relations as told in your message- so sorry. I don't have any such names in my family- that I know of. There may be offshoots who I haven't researched - I tend to stick to my own lines and not those of siblings. At the moment I am tied by health and financial restrictions so haven't been doing anything on Ancestry for a while. I will tell you however that my Purchases came from Wilmslow, Cheshire [me/dad and his siblings], Burslem in Stoke on Trent [my Granny Purchase nee Moreton] and Walsall [my Grandad Purchase and his father's family and ancestors] My dad was Frederick William b1912. My grandad was also Frederick. My grt Grandad was Jabez b1852 in Walsall. Now whether there are siblings who are related to you, I don't know but if this helps you, please let me know how you go on as I'd like to link up with anyone related! All the best,
Pauline

Has anyone searching for the PURCHASE connections had their DNA tested? I had mine done twice - once for the mtDNA, since my grandmother was adopted - and again for the "family finder" through the FamilyTreeDNA.com website. I have roughly 54 matches and several of these just don't seem to click. Of those 54 matches, 37 are 5th cousins or 6th generation connections.
So I am curious as to whether or not anyone on this list have been tested and if they have matched anyone else on this list? Or better yet if they match me...
My connection is through my paternal lines - Stephen Dunwell m. to Nancy Purchase > their daughter Lucetta Lusk Dunwell m. to John G. Barker > their son Morris Lusk Barker 1848-1922.
Nancy is purported to be the daughter of Robert Purchase 1753-1763, and wife Elizabeth "Betsey" Abbott. This connection is in my 3rd great grandparent lines (Robert Purchase being my 4th ggf)

Leslie Barker Thomas

Edward PURCHASE b abt 1844 seems to have been the son of John PURCHASE and Edith (BARTLETT)and to have died in Netherbury 1829, buried 24 April 1829. Hannah TETT b abt 1739 seems to have been the daughter of William TETT abt 1698-1768 and Mary (SHARP) of Wayford SOM abt 1699-1769. Hannah's sister Ruth married Edward's brother John.

I am virtually certain that Alice PURCHASE, older sister of this Jane, who married her first cousin Job TETT in Netherbury in 1797, was my 5G grandmother. Netherbury registers showed witnesses at the time. There is an efficient OPC for Netherbury on the Dorset OPC web site, who may be able to advise of the witnesses to the marriage of Jane and Adam FOLLETT. I think the transcription of the registers is now on Findmypast. There is a TETT surname mailing list on Yahoo. If Juli or Peter wants to contact me directly for more info on this and related families, my email address is readily found on the Glamorgan Rootsweb mailing list archive. Several relevant wills are on the National Archives web site. Jeff Coleman

Re: Jane Purchase (born about 1780 in Dorset, UK) married Adam Follett in 1806 in Netherbury

I can confirm that your Jane was not Jane Purchase baptised 17 May 1784 at Puncknowle Dorset, daughter of Richard Purchase (1757-1834) and Elizabeth [nee Prince] (1762-1841), as that Jane married William Haggett (1786-1860) on 1 Feb 1814 at Haselbury Plucknett, Somerset, had 5 children and died 4 June 1879 at Llandenny Monmouthshire. This Jane's grandfather John Purchase (d 1781) had property in Netherbury, though he died in Swyre.
Richard Purchase had a younger sister Jane b 1762, and it is possible that one of his brothers may have had a daughter Jane as well. It may be worth investigating what happened to a child of Edward Purchase and Hannah [nee Tett] baptised 4 June 1777 at Askerswell, who I have recorded as Jenny, as her parents had married at Netherbury in 1769, and there were Tett relatives remaining in Netherbury. Her sister had married in Netherbury in 1797 and remained there. Are there witnesses listed for the wedding?

To Bill Pickard,
Sorry I wasn't ignoring your message about a Charles Purchase... I had a hard drive crash. Only recently have been able to recover some of the emails.

I haven't found anything to date on a Charles Purchase. There is a website I have found helpful in the recent past. Google books - it has several out of print books and many related to genealogy records. I've found several references to the PURCHASE families who are considered pioneers and first settlers of the New England states.

Re: Thomas James Purchase, b. 1846, N.Y.
We previously connected on the rootsweb message board, "Thomas James Purchase, b. 1846, N.Y." My husband's family is the family that you are researching. His GGGGrandfather is Thomas Purchase, GGGrandfather is Evlin Purchase, his GGrandfather is Thomas James Purchase and his Grandfather is Samuel James Purchase, b. 1880, Nebraska.

I am struggling with a couple issues that I am hoping you-- on someone on the message board-- might know the answer to:

1.) Did Evlin Purchase (b. 1822, NY) have 2 wives or was it just Elmira/Almira Watson?

2.) About Evlin's son, Thomas James Purchase (b. 1844,NY) what are his wife's name and facts about her? Was her name Emma/Emily Patterson or was it Emma/Emily Benton? Did Thomas James marry just once? This wife has become a terrible confusion!

Thanks for any help!

Kathleen Purchase

LPurch6636@aol.com
