I have recently acquired two wonderful old photos of the above line of Purdues from the Warrick Co, Evansville, Marion, Il etc area. They were taken at a family reunion...one in 1913 and one in 1917. Does anyone have any idea how ANY of the people could be identified. There are children in both photos born as late as 1912 and 1908 and some of the older people could have been born in the 1840's. It is a GREAT find and one the owner, I am sure, is happy to share with other Purdue descendants, including, Addingtons, Swabs, Works and more. My e-mail is dooda@chartermi.net Please contact me for more info. Diane Addington Matherly

I have your ancestor George Barney as a tentative spouse for my Louisa Mary. I'll do some more research to be sure.

I can't find a James amongst the Purdues of Overton, but I'm still looking and they keep turning up. Part of the difficulty is that some of them were non-conformists and also they visited a lot [my grandfather was a Christadelphian and was born in Kingsclere, though the rest of his family were born in Overton]
LeAnn,
I have a letter dated Sept 2, 1862 which states:
Basil Purdue of [the 5th Illinois Cavalry] died yesterday morning. He lived in White Co. Ill. He left a young wife and a small babe two or three months old. She is his third wife. He has two children living by his second wife and one by his first wife.

He would have enlisted in Springfield, Illinois during the American Civil War. Maybe you meant to say the American Revolution as a starting point for the Purdue history stateside.

Re: Purdue Family research England to Canada

I am researching the Purdue's from Newbury, Berkshire, England
I am convinced that there is a connection with our family's but I cannot put it together. As far back as I can go is John Purdue dob? 1800? married Mary Viner in 1823. They had Alexander dob: 1824; Eliza 1825 - 1902; Mary 1826 - 1892; John Andrew 1828 - 1861; John Jr 1829 - 1865; Edward 1831;
William (1833 - 1891 gg grandfather); Martha 1836-1901; Joseph 1840 - 1909. I know that William and John Jr went to Australia in the 1950's. John and Mary Viner married in 1823 at the Whissendine Parish. John was a Cheese Monger with his business located at 152 High Street, Southwark, Surrey, England. After Mary died in 1842, John remarried Elizabeth Higgs and they had three children, Elizabeth 1844; Constance 1847 -1929; and Thomas Willoughby 1850 - 1849. Any help tying together the Purdues would be greatly appreciated.

As far back as I can go is Newbury, then some went to Australia William Purdue (GG grandfather) and John Jr. My husband's grandfather, Horace Josiah Purdue, came to California, USA in 1903, and his brother, Alfred Edward Purdue, going to Canada. I am convinced there is a connection with all the Newbury Purdues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Siobhan

I've always found your Thomas a difficult one to decipher. I am sure all these PURDUEs in Newbury are connected in some way, but it is just proving it. Infuriatingly there are a few crucial baptisms missing.

Some of the PURDUEs stayed with the C of E church, while the others became nonconformists. Most of the nonconformists seem to have been clothiers, whereas my anglicans were parish clerks and cordwainers.

I have gone back to a James PURDUE in Newbury in the early 1600s but can't connect him with all the groups. These are the only family baptising children in Newbury early in the 1600s and one would have thought that most of the others must originate with this group.

Sadly not enough of them left wills!

I hope I've been able to give you a bit of help.

All the best

Carol

Dear Carol, Thank you so much for your information and I am sorry I have not been in touch sooner. I think you are right about the Thomas Purdue in Newbury. I have not done much research for a while and you seem to have more concrete information than me. I am a descendent of Sarah Ann's brother, Arthur born 1839. If you want to see my tree just let me know. I do not currently 'belong' to ancestry at the moment but hope to rejoin soon.
Regards Siobhan

Just to help a little with Thomas, there is a Thomas son of Thomas PURDUE and Elizabeth SHILTON baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury in June 1809. He appears in Toomer's 1815 census of Newbury, living in White Hall, Newbury with his parents and siblings. Thomas senior's profession is given as a labourer.

The other Thomas PURDUE on the IGI, baptised in 1810 is the son of John PURDUE and Sarah VINER. If I recall correctly he is a chemist by trade.

I think your Sarah Ann is the grandaughter of Thomas and Elizabeth of Newbury. I am not sure but Thomas PURDUE senior could be the son of John PURDUE and Margaret WALKER, who was baptised 28th December 1769 at St Nicolas, Newbury. Thomas senior is living in Raymond's Almshouses in Newbury in 1851, aged 81. He is a shoemaker and I can't help wondering if he is related to my PURDUEs who were shoemakers.

Best wishes

Carol
Hi. I am trying to research the Purdue family from Newbury. I think we may be distant cousins. My G. G. Grandfather was Arthur Purdue born 1840, brother of Sarah Ann. It appears that when Arthur's parents died in 1855 (Ann nee Gosling) and 1859 (Thomas) he became the head of the household and cared for his younger brothers and sisters. Arthur died aged 32 of Tb/Consumption. I have found it difficult to find any information about Thomas born abt 1810 in Newbury or any of his relations! I know there are lots of Purdues in Newbury during this period but making a connection is proving difficult. Any info you have would be appreciated. Many Thanks Siobhan.

Hello Christine,
I noticed the various messages about the Purdue family. I believe that I am related through Mary Anne Thorpe who married Thomas Purdue in 1849.
My 4 x great uncle was Charles Thorpe, a shoemaker, born in 1795. He fits the description of Mary's father and I can send the details, if of interest.
Regards,
David

Pardue/Perdue/Perdieu etc of East Texas

Seeking information on any Perdue (any spelling) families of East Texas, especially those with connections to Delta County, Texas.

The following marriages occurred in Delta County Texas:

Mariah B. Perdieu to James Garland Wheatley on 13 Feb 1883
Sarah A. Perdieu to John W. Dial on 13 Feb 1883
Mary Ellen Perdew to Bird William Blount on 06 May 1885
Martha Ann Pardue to John Turner on 04 Apr 1886
Nealie Pardue to A. R. Malory on 18 Apr 1886

I am having difficulty finding any of these on the census of 1880 or before in any state, under any spelling. According to the 1900 census, Mary Ellen was born July 1861 in Virginia, and both her parents were born in Virginia. According to census records for Mariah's children, she was born in Tennessee or Texas, and I have seen an uncomfirmed birthdate for her of 1859.

I would appreciate any assistance with this family.

L.To.R.
Ratliff, Gudger, Redmon, Collins, Coffman, Brown, Bonza, Wilson
"Front. If you might know who any of these men are including Mr. Purdue, please contact me by replying or email. Thanks, Amber Harkins
Hi, I am doing research on the purdue line from newbury and I need to link from luke purdue 1776 upwards - his father was Joseph Purdue 1740 from Newbury and his wife Hannah Halker. Joseph only seems to have a mother called Martha listed and up till now I thought that the father was a Purdue, but after going to the records office searching parish records, I now think that she may not have been married so therefore poor Joseph took his mothers name as was done in those days.I have a will of John Purdue 1712-1791 married to Hannah Head and my luke Purdue is mentioned as one of his nephews or newphews children and he was, with his siblings a beneficery to that will dated 1791. If this can be solved I then link into Eleanors tree who lives in Australia. I am in contact with Carol Franks who is also trying to help but yet of no avail. Many thanks - Janet Purdue.

I am fairly certain that my Sarah Ann was born in the second quarter of 1841, the daughter of Thomas and Ann.
At the 1851 census (HO 107/1685 f266 p18)they were living in Back Lane, Newbury with Margaret (14),Arthur(11),Edward(8), Elizabeth(5) and Harriet (4).
At the 1871 census for 2 Park Cottages,Albert Road, Croydon,Surrey, I have Sarah Ann living with her husband John Phippard SHEARS (my ggf) and wife's sister Harriet, plus Sarahs children Henry (3) and Edward (6 months).
I have just sent for sarah's birth and marriage certificates to verify match. regards
Ian

If anyone likes a mystery and can help please - I would be so grateful. I have a will dated 1791 of John Purdue born 1712-1791 in newbury, berks. He married hannah head and had one son James birth unknown, but also have his will and his death was 1789. John purdue 1712, james's father in his will talks about his nephews and nieces one of which is my ancester Luke Purdue born 1776 in newbury - his decedants came down to london which is my direct line. Also mentioned was joseph purdue - the weaver,Lukes father was joseph purdue born 1740 in newbury and married hannah walker in 1763. I know there is a link but cannot find it so far. We are in the Morse tree, but Jame's second wife mary stanbrook is the link to me. I have full documentation from Luke Purdue downwards to present day.
