In a deposition in 1921, Bertha Quackenbush of Jamesburg, N.J., daughter of William Hausman and Amy Carson, stated that she had her mother's old family bible at home with the names and dates of all the Carson children contained therein.

Would very much like to learn the fate of this bible. I am a descendant of Bertha's aunt, Caroline Carson, of Trenton, N.J.

Yes, you are right! i looked into the 1850 census and it makes sense that Hudla would have been Lorenzo's mother and Alfred his brother. There is some kind of connection to Williams Co., Oh. I have found other Quackenbush's there. Also, have you come across a Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) connection? A son of Ezekiel and Polly GLEASON, John Streator GLEASON, was a person of influence in the early church. I believe he passed through Lorain Co., OH on his way to Utah. The Mormon Church in Lorain Co. may hold the key to the GLEASON family. Good luck! This is a tough one!

I'm researching Mary Quackenbush Mill b. about 1804 who I believe is the daughter of Peter Quackenbush & Mary Russell. It would be great to to compare notes. Mary and her husband James Mill lived in Dundas County, Ontario & St. Lawrence County, NY in the 1850-1870's. Their decendants include the names of Peter, Eli, John Russell. email me at vrbmill@yahoo.com.

I don't believe Ezekiel and Polly were the parents of my Lorenzo Gleason. That Lorenzo was born in NY 1825 and died in 1943. I have not been able to determine the father of my Lorenzo; though I do believe his brothers are Darius, Orville and Alfred. His mother Huldah and brother Alfred were living with him in Lorain, OH per the 1860 census. All were born in NY. Also per the 1860 census Lorenzo, Orville and Darius Gleason along with Alonzo Quackenbush were neighbors. Lorenzo was born in 1822, died in Lorain, OH 1898. He was a cooper (barrel maker) and was enlisted in the civil war in 1863.
The children of Lorenzo and Elvira were Alonzo, b. <1848>, d. Castalia, OH 1907; Belle, b. 1851 and Ellen, b. 1858; all born in Amherst, Lorain county, OH.
Alonzo married Rachel Dawes in Erie county, OH in 1883. The were the parents of my grandmother May Gleason Dawes.
I don't have any info on Elvira Quackenbush except that she was born in Ohio in 1826. and had a brother Alonzo, b. 1822 who married Rhoda Cutler and moved to Branch County Michigan where they raised their children, George, Carries, Burtie, Lettie and Ira. Per the 1900 census Rhoda was a widow living with her daughter Lettie Hilton in Williams county, OH.
I suspect that Elvira's parents were George W and Elizabeth Quackenbush b. in NY but haven't been able to establish that fact. Many of the early residents of Ohio came down from upstate New York.
The fact that Elvira was born in OH and Lorenzo in NY would lead me to believe that the Quackenbush family migrated to Ohio before the Gleason family.
Do you have info on Lorenzo GLEASON's family? I have tracked down his father; Ezekiel and mother, Mary "Polly" HOWARD. Lorenzo's sister, Angelina, and her husband Truman FRICK, were, also, in Lorain Co., OH. Angelina was born ca 1828 in Livingston, NY. Perhaps that is where the QUACKENBUSHs are from, too.

Just came across an article in the Chronicle Telegram (Elyria, OH) 1959. The title of the article is "2 Whiskeyville Cemetery Mysteries Solved" It's about an old cemetery that the Amherst Highway Dept. was getting ready to pave over. An elderly lady and her husband who grew up there knew that 3 of the people buried there were "Lorenzo Gleason, his wife and son, Roy". It went on to say that the graves were to be moved to Kendeigh Corners Cem. maintained by the township.

Thanks for the reply! If you come across any info on the parents of Alonzo I'd appreciate hearing from you as I've not been able to find anything...
I haven't been able to determine if Alonzo and my GGGrandmother Elvira had any other siblings. Apparently Alonzo and Rhoda moved from Lorain, OH to Branch, Michigan before 1870 and lived there the rest of their lives raising five children; George, Charles, Carrie, Bertie and Ira. In 1910 Rhoda was a widow living with her son Ira in Branch, Michigan.

Erik - This is quite belated as I usually do not look at message boards. I did not find a Catherine Quackenbush born about 1807 in my records. Sorry this is so late. I hope that you have found the information you are seeking. I do know that there is a Quackenbush family in the Houston area and I have met at least one member of that family while living in Victoria, TX. He was a musician which played in various towns in the Houston area. Currently living in Montgomery county north of you.

Jason - I am a Quackenbush and I have Gail Richard Quackenbush's extensive book (880 pages) THE QUACKENBUSH FAMILY IN AMERICA; 1987. It was printed in the United States but does not have any publishing house listed. He sold it privately and as far as I can determine there are no copies available. I do believe that some genealogists have entered some of the family trees from the book into their computers. It starts with PIETER, b. ca. 1614 in Holland and covers ten generations. He sailed to New Amsterdam prob. May 1653 on the ship GRAFT. It notes that a DIRK AELBERTSZOON VAN QUACKENBOSCH on 17 Sep. 1529 used the shield of the Van Quackenbosch coat of arms.

My Grandfather, Donald Clifford Hyatt was born in 1913 to Fred Hyatt and Ethel Quackenbush Ryerson Hyatt. Fred and Ethel married in 1912 but Ethel was first married to Asa Ryerson and shows up with him in Warwick in the 1910 Census. The 1910 Census shows they have 3 children. A daughter, Elizabeth E, age 5, a son J Walter, age 3 and a son Loyd T, 3 months. I haven't been able to find out what happened to Asa but somewhere in my research I did find that the children were living with the Quackenbush family. Whether they ever lived with Fred, Ethel and their 2 sons, I don't know because Ethel died in 1915.

Does anyone know what has happened to the half siblings of my grandfather? He has passed away as has my father. I would really like to know what happened to Asa and especially the children of my great grandmother.

If anyone would like to correspond and share info or knows what happened to the long lost kids, please email me at slheider3@gmail.com.

Thanks,
Susan Heider

Have 1860's PHOTOS of Anne QUACKENBUSH (in her 40's?) Quackenbush male of New Jersey and his wife (40's?), Net Quackenbush and her sister (both in 20's?) These photos are in the Henry C. Post album. He was born in 1798 in Hoboken, Hudson, NJ. In the 1820's his family moved to Parma, Monroe Co, NY. IN the 1830's they moved again to Van Buren Twp, Wayne Co, MI. The Quackenbushes could have been Post relatives as at least one tree has Adriaen Post and Clarjte Moocker's daughter, Machteld Jans Post, marrying a Johannes Quackenbosch in the 1600's. Anyone have any ideas about the people in these photos?

I am trying to begin searching for my birth family (I was given up for adoption in 1959) I have very little information to go on. My birth mother was Georgina Grace QUACKENBUSH (born Jan. 1943). She lived in or around Rome, New York. She married a Mr. COVEY in or about Rome, New York. My birth father was John DUNN (I think). I'd appreciate anyone who has information on either the DUNNs or QUACKENBUSHs.

Hello,
My GG Grandmother was Elvira (Alvira?) Quackenbush born in OH 1825... She was married in Ohio to Lorenzo Gleason; born in NY 1820. They show up on the US census living in Amherst, Lorain, OH in 1850 through 1880. Their children were Alonzo, Belle and Ellen. Their son Alonzo was my G Grandfather. Elvira may have had a brother Alonzo married to a Rhoda (1860 Lorain, OH census). I wondered if these names show up in anyone's family line? I can't seem to trace back any further than the 1850 census. Any info would be much appreciated.
thanks,
Kathy

Hi there. Looking for family related to Matilda C Quakenbush (May 12, 1836-Mar 25 1906)who married Hiram R Rhoades on Mar 5, 1857.

Both Matilda and Hiram were born in New Jersey according to my records and both died in Indiana. I have been told that Matilda's family came and settled in the area down around West Newton (Decatur Twp., Marion County, Indiana) and even have a street named after them, though I have not confirmed that yet.

I have yet to find out exactly who her parents are, and I have some iffy info on potential brothers.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Steve, It's been awhile since I have communicated with you...busy on other branches. I too am stuck on a particular person, and am wondering if you have any clue. Ephriam Drake m. to Mary Quackenbush...living with her daughter Catherine Anne and her husband Henry Clay Parcher and family. Anyway, it has been told that Catherine came from the Columbus OH area, and Rowena from the Cleveland area...at first I was in hopes they were sisters, but not so. On Ephriam E. Drakes' death cert. it has Charles Drake as the informant, but his mother as Anna Kimbush and father as Silas Drake...and in 1910 census, Ruanna Alice Drake is listed as his cousin (she was my G-gm). I am in hopes of tracking down the place Mary died, to try to tie her into some family... question is, do you have any info on Mary or Catherine Anne...as far as their roots prior to Catherine's marriage? Thanks for taking the time to read this short novel...Roxanne
