William Querry (Query, Queary, Quary, Quarry) - Ireland, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia

William Querry is my ggg-grandfather. It is believed that he was born in Ireland between 1772-1785 and d. 1837 in Lee County, Virginia. The next we hear of him, he is in Kentucky. On November 2, 1799, he marries Susannah Skaggs (b. 1777 in Kentucky and d. 1837(?)in Lee County, Virginia), daughter of John Skaggs Sr.(b. 1728 in Virginia and d. 1829 in Kentucky). I am trying to find when William departed Ireland/sailed to America and on what ship. All the records in Ancestry only show people departing the British Isles who were born in the 1800's or later. I am also trying to find the names of William's parents and any brothers and sisters. Did anyone else travel with him when he came to America? If anyone has any information, I would appreciate your sharing.

Thank you,

Brenda

The haplogroup is R1b1. Please keep in mimd that my brother who matched exactly with a Quarry is a Holt. Another possibility to look at is the Melungeon line, which was concentrated in the area of TN where my Holts were. Since the Melungeons were looked down upon, either a Quarrry or Holt or both could have changed his/their name from something else. Researching the Melungeon line is worse than "hitting a brick wall." One feels completely surrounded by brick walls.

I'm not sure if this line connects with any of mine, but I love checking out thing like this so I will dig into my notes and cross check my Hawkins Co families to see if there is anything. Getting a list of the men that were listed as tories might help. See if there is any Quary on it. I will check on some of the Native possibilies. Will keep you posted. Good Luck!

The results that matched exactly for my brother and a Quarry were 13 25 14 11 11 14 12 12 12 13 13 29 17 9 10 11 11 27 15 19 29 15 15 16 17. I'm assuming the marker results are always given a a particular order, but if you want that order, I can post it also.

Check and see if there was a name change because of the Rev War. Alot of tories took their mothers maiden name to hide or change it all together to another family name. Also with the native connection that this family has it could be he took another name because it just wanted to. Look for the other name in the Cherokee rolls and see if you get any clues.

My brother, last name Holt, recently did DNA testing in hopes of finding what Holt ancestral line we came from; however, the person he matched exactly was not a Holt, but a Quarry. We haven't gotten any responses from this person when we've inquired about his ancestral history, but this info on Hawkins Co., TN, is intriquing. My Holts came from this area, and my gr-gr-gr-grandfather was supposedly a Methodist preacher, the same as the Quarry discussed in these posts. Also, he named my gr-gr-grandfather "Pleasant", which is a name in the Quarry info also. Perhaps all this is coincidental, but if anyone knows of a Quarry orphan who might have been raised by Holts and give the name of Holt, that could explain the DNA fiasco. Just call this "grasping at straws."

Darla, it's possible that we are related if only because of location. The person I was looking for is Myrtle Boofer Quarry (also have found it spelled queary, though). She was also from Hopkins, Co. TX and possibly married a nephew of your great grandmother. She was born between 1908 and 1918. I don't have the exact date in front of me. If I come across any info I will get it to you and if you happen across her name, let me know. I will probably be in Hopkins Co this summer doing some research. If you would like me check on a record, let me know.

Becky

Justin, I don't know much about any Boofers now. My grandmother was a Boofer from East Texas, mostly Hopkins and Hunt county. She had a brother Clyde who I don't think had sons, her brother Jake had a son named Joseph Duane, who I believe had a son who last I knew was in Pheonix, don't know his name, though. That group was mostly in AZ. My mother was an only child, and really didn't keep in touch with cousins, etc. Good luck, though.

Hi Kathy! From what appears to be your maiden name (in your reply), I would guess this is indeed the same family that we are researching! I know Thomas and Mary's daughter Anna married a Michael Kelly and they had at least five children that I know of : Kathleen T. Kelly, Patricia (married Leahy), Mary (married Binstead), Regina and Thomas. I don't know everything about their family; most of my research has been through Anna's sister, Kathryn Quarry Dunn, who is my maternal great-great-grandmother.

If these details correspond with information you know, please get in touch with me either via this board or by email at tedweiland@hotmail.com or ted@theweilands.net. I would love to hear more if indeed this is the same family. I have more information that I have uncovered since this message board posting.

Their children are:
Julianna(b.28.02.1812), Joanna(b.14.07.1813), Edward(b.07.01.1815), twins Honora &Bridget(b.03.08.1817), Mary(b.03.02.1819), William(b.16.01.1822), James(1826), John(b.27.03.1831) Catherine(b.13.07.1834). This may be of some help to someone. I'm trying to trace James and Catherines marriage if anyone can help me with that. Until then I'm at a dead end.

He was married to Mary, also from Ireland, and had 2 sons, James D. and Leo. The family lived at 1539 N. 24th Street in Philly at the time of the 1920 census. The family stayed in the Philadelphia area, where my father, James J. Quarry, son of James D., was born and raised. I'd love to find out where the family originated in Ireland.
