I was born one of the first kind.
One of my relatives called his home Molland and the archivist from Exeter thinks they were one family originally
I am trying to find the link.

Molland ones are normally spelt Quartly

Am really confused as I have had two lots of messages - Ziggymon to whom I cannot get a message through and also you. Are you two different people?? I assume so but in one message Bicester is mentioned - I am in Buckingham- and in the next Bahrein (which I think I have spelt wrongly). Sorry to be so dim but I would love to pursue all this!

Me again i will get my gran to Email you as i have alot of trouble getting internet use out in bahrain but know she would just love to chat about her project with you i hope you can both increase the family knowledge.

i cant spell this but i hope you get the idea think we have been tracked down to a place in france called quarie de tombes but i have a feeling we were probably from farther south as most of the family i know tan like crazy :D

Great to have your message - don't know where to start but am not on Facebook - too many questions at the moment about privacy etc. - heard a whole lot on The T.V. programme "Click" this a.m. However, I wonder where your gran lives. Presumably her origins are in Devon like the rest of us. I keep finding more and more info and cannot fit it all in but my father was Frederick William Quartly - son of John and Betsy Hole who lived in and around Withypool all their lives. All farming backgrounds of course!

Do keep in touch. We live in Buckingham - the town - retired here nearly14 years ago!

wow if you have face book my name is robert quartly my gran has been researching the family tree for awhile now there is also a group on face book with our family name im currently in bahrain at the moment but it is surprising that i didnt know all of the family in the area would be great to get to know you and see how the family branches out there are alot of us in australia and some amazing storys ill send what info i can get but if you are on face book i can get you in touch with my gran and she has everything we know to date :D thanks for the reply all the best

I, too am in the Bicester area and descended from the Q family. Interested to read about France as my Mother always believed the family came from France but others dispute this!

William was son of another John. His father was also John, son of a James, whose father was also James buried in Molland 1723

My Great grandmother was a servant at the molland house in 1871 and gave birth to my grandfather in South Molton woekhouse on dec12 1871, no father named.
I believe it highly probable that one of the Quartleys, James or John, or one of john,s sons Henry or Francis was the father.
I wish to trace a male descendent of any of those to get a dna sample to prove the point.
I have the Quartly family tree from 1668 which i will transmit to any member who sends me their email adress,

My Gt. grandmother was a servant girl with James Quartly at West Molland in 1871 when she became pregnant giving birth to my grandfather in the S,Molton workhouse on 12 Dec 1871
Her name was Emma Marshall and her son Walter has no father shown on his birth certificate. Living next door farm, Gt Champson, was James brother John and his two sons, Francis and Henry.In view of the practice "Droite de Seigneur" I think on the balance of probabilities, one of thse was the father of Walter Marshall B 12.Dec 1871 who is my grandfather.
I wish to trace a direct male descendent to try to get a dna match and prove the point.
No legal issues are involved, just my own family satisfaction

i am in the bicester area of england and my granparents live in horsepath near oxford she has been reserching alot about the family and as far as i know managed to trace the quartly family to france quarry les tombes there is also a face book group dedicated to both the quartlys and the quartleys too hope this helps would be good to hear back if so all the best and happy hunting

I know your query was a long time ago but I have just discovered that Henry Quartly's son Luke, married my Great Great Great Grandmother - Mary Milton around the mid 1860s. She had already had my Great Great Grandfather John Kelland Milton by that point so he was his stepson.

I am interested in your post about the Quarterlys.

I am trying to research my G3-grandmother Mary Quarterly who was born in Devonport, however it is your mention of Isaac Quartly and his daughter Ada Eliza which is particularly interesting.

My Great-great-uncle Henry John Thomas married a Mary Ann Elzabeth Quartly who was born in Islington on 9th Nov 1866.
Her father was Isaac, and her mother was born a Brereton.
She had a younger sister Ada E, who was aged 9 on the 1881 census.

I feel sure this would have been the same family.
Also, although I initially thought there was some tie-up with the Quarterley family, I now think it is entire co-incidence that Henry John's grandmother, (and my G3-grandmother), was a Mary Quarterly.

At least one cousin on the Henry John side of the family would possibly be interested in your research into the Quartly ancestry, and perhaps you could contact her or let her contact you.

Please let me know if you receive this message: so often with the internet messages just seem to vanish into the ether and you wonder whether there is anyone out there!

Molland Quartleys

Hi all

I've got an Ann Quartley ancestor born I think in 1756 in Molland. She ended up in South Molton, where it seemed she fell on hard times. She seems to have had 5 illegitimate children, including William Taylor my 5xgreat grandfather, so it seems possible that she had to work in the oldest profession, if you catch my drift.

I would be very interested to hear more about Molland Quartleys. I think her father was probably James Quartley, the son of Henry Quartley and Mary Moor. Does anyone have any more information about this family?

My husband's grandfather was James the son of John Quartly married to Betty Hole. John's father was William, we have traced him back to living in Molland, which we have visited recently.

Looking for more info on John Quarters b; June 10, 1858 in New York - d; Apr 29, 1935 in Iosco Co., Michigan. He married Esther McNally/McAnally in 1883, Iosco Co, Michigan. She was born Mar 1864 in Pennsylvania (probably Schuylkill Co, PA) Thier children are:

I do know that Catherine is buried somewhere in East Tawas, Michigan and that Reuben died Jan 1892, Eat Tawas, Michigan.

I have just seen your message. At the moment I am researching the family tree (in the UK) of a friends mother, and her father Maurice Warrington's, mother was Ada Eliza Quartly who married William Joseph Warrington in 1898, presumably in the London area of the UK.

Ada's father was Isaac Quartly, and I have now managed to make contact with a family member, who has a relative who researched the Quartly's back to about the 1700's. (Confused? Me too!)

I would be interested in your Quartly research regarding the origins of the name etc.

My grandfather was a Quartly (Fred d1973) & I have traced back to John who was born in Withypool in 1826, married to Betty. Their children were
Elizabeth, Emma, Frank, Henry, James, Jane, John.

Does any one have any conection to Henry Quartly b abt 1790 Withypool somerset Married Sarah Comer in 1821. They i beleave had ten children from 1823 to 1843. Henry was a shoe maker/ cordwainer.

I am married to a quartley. You are correct in saying
that it has been spelt in different ways. On one census
it is spelt a different way. My husband's family come from Cutcombe,Somerset. The Devon ,Somerset and
all the rest are connected. They all go back to 1066.
They, or, rather,he came over with William the Conquerer.
