I am the grandson of Reverend John William Davis ( Kingstree SC and Minden LA). Not sure this will help you, but Granddad also pastored to the Churches in Johnston and Trenton SC. One of his great friends was McQueen Quattlebaum who lived between Johnston and Trenton on what was purported to be the family estate. McQueen Quattlebaum made his fortune as the provider of ice to the truckers transporting peaches from the Johnston/Trenton area--this was before refridgerated trucks. His ice plant was located on Main Street in Johnston along the railroad tracks. McQueen Quattlbaum married very late in life and to the best of my knowledge had no offspring. Mr Quattlebaum was the quintessential Southern Gentlemen. In summer he could always be found in a blue seersucker suit with a straw fedora. He always had a pocket full of dimes he gave the children of Johnston when they came by the ice plant to get a sliver of ice in the hot summer days.

Sarah Quattlebaum married Manning or Washington Spradley

Manning Spradley b.1805 SC was son of James b. 1757 SC and great grandson of Bryant b.1737 SC. Either Manning Spradley or a Washington Spradley b. probably 1795-1815 married Sarah Quattlebaum. There is strong evidence that it was Washington, but many seem to believe that it was Manning? He had a son named Washington, but he was not of age to marry Sarah. Does anyone have information about these people, especially Washington about which very little is known (by me).
Hi, Sarah is in my line and after seeing your message, I did some more research on Ancestry.com. I now have a full membership and it is very comprehensive. I found some very valuable information on a OneWorldTree put on the web by the Guntert Family. You can email me directly at aline@holtzmanaj.com or call me at 512-215-2555 and I can give you the info I have.

Aline Holtzman
Lago Vista TX
They are very picky about proof and this is one of the things I'm having trouble with.

Most of my father's family is buried in Quattlebaum Cemetery in White County, AR.
Thanks, again.

I have four Family Trees that list George Washington Quattlebaum and Mary Shealy as his parents. It says George Fred was born 1817 in Edgefield SC and died 11/18/1896, White AR.

Hope this helps.

I have a lot of information on George Fred Quattlebaum, but no proof that his father was Geroge Washington Quattlebaum. Unfortunately, all of George Washington's children seem to be born before 18550 where a census would confirm the relationship. I am not aware of a will or probate. My husband (who is a direct descendant of Quattlebaums) and I searched the Searcy, White County courthouse. Unfortunately, it was many, many years ago when we first started working on geneaology and we may have missed some clues. I hope to go back there someday. Sorry.

I'm a descendant of George Fred Quattlebaum through his daughter Matilda Ann, who married Americus Montgomery. They moved to White County, AR. All of my grandparents and great grandparents along with Matilda are buried at the Quattlebaum Cemetery there. I have a few pictures that I took there several years ago, including the front gates with the dedication to Philip Quattlebaum who donated the property for the cemetery.
I am trying to find the proof that George Fred was the son of George Washington in order to secure my line for entrance into the DAR.
If you should have any information that would help I would appreciate it.
Barbara

I am not a part of the Quattlebaum family but have a "batik/painting" that looks to be signed by a Quattlebaum and have been trying to see who this may have been. This piece of art appears to be older as there is hand stitching on the edge and can faintly see the words williamsburg thru the paint on the cloth. I don't have any history on it although it was said at one time that it was purchased at a silent auction in Vermont. I purchased it in a consignment store in Pawley's Island, SC.. Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Thank you, Marie

Quattlebaum,Rose,Doby(Darby)Montgomery....

Good Evening, Let me introduce myself. I am the great-great-grand daugther of Frank Walter Quattlebaum and Maggie (Doby)Darby. In the old days people spelled names the way they sound. My name is Hellena. Like Many of our extended family memebers on these message boards, we are making progress slowly in our search for our ancestors. I am the 10th generation of Petter and anna Quattlebaum of Kittwig, Germany. My family settleed in Orangeburg,SC. I started my research more than 10 years ago. Like you, I always wanted to know my roots. The good, the bad and the ugly. But thanks to many of my Quattlebaum family members,Wiley E Koon, Michael Perry, Doris Wheeler, Carol Warren and many others, gave me the little information they had, and I took it from there. My research took me back to Germany. My family left becuase of the many religious wars that took place. This was a time during the Reformation. The battle between Martin Luthur and the Catholic Church( You can find this info on line"Why Perrter Quattlebaum Left Germany".In my view,it was like the Civil War of America.

To make a long story short, My mother was raised in Claradon County,South Caralina, a small town called "Turbeville. Her grand mother was part German and Cherokee. Her grand father was part German,Indian and Black Irish. My father's mother was from the West Indies, at that time it was a British Colony. My point being, in this research, I made it clear I was not and will not focus on the negatives of my ancestors. I have studied German History and found out that many of the people from the Carrabeans and Africa were free and educated people. I also discovered before Germany was renamed Germany. There were free people of color who attened one of the most prestegious University at the time.I will look up the name for you.

The Quattlebaum Family and many of my extended ancestors have agreed that American History needs to be re-written. Many of my friends tells me I should never talk about my German Ancestry. Some laugh and say, you are a product of your white master. "Don't ever tell anyone you are mixed blood. Well, I have news for them. They can go to hell. There is one thing I have learned from my Quattlebaum cousins I have communicated on our message board. As long as i know who I am,I can careless what other's think. be proud of who you are. here are some surnames that are connected to the Quattlebaum Family

Quattlebaum
Doby(Darby)
Wilson
Rose
Mongomery
Brown
Wheeler
Perry
Goodman
Butler
Williams
Williamson
Glover
Dowling
McFadden (McFaddin)
Hampton
Coker
Cousar
McKnight
Smith
Horn (Horne)
Baker
Cantey (Canty)
Nommons
Warren,Wheilen,Whelen
This is just a short list. Many of the Quattlebaum's are still living in Sumter,Lynchburg,Olanta,Lake City,Florence, Orangeburg. here is one more thing the Quattlebaum Family has agree on we are all the decendents of these two people, Petter and Anna. Keep the communication lines open. This caould be a fascinating peice of hisroty. Each of the 10th generation of Quattlebaum's add their story. Good Luck.
Hi Aline,

I am reconstructing a passengers list for the ship GREENWICH that arrived in Charleston, SC in Jan 1750 and brought my immigrant ancestor Conrad Holman. On the ship was a Barbara Quatlowome [Quattlebaum] along with 29 other families. Soon after the arrival she married Alexander Deley [Dailey] and peititioned for land within a year. I am looking for her birth place in either Germany or Switzerland along with the other passengers' birth places in hopes of finding my Conrad's birth place. Do you have her listed in your Quattlebaum book?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Larry Holman
Vicksburg, MS

The location of Gen. Quattlebaum's homeplace is on Quattlebaum Rd. which turns to the south off Two Notch Rd. near Leesville, SC. The easiest way to find it is to go on US 1 to Leesville until the intersection of SC 245. Turn south, then follow Brodie Rd after it forks to the left. Follow Brodie Rd until it intersects with Two Notch Rd. Turn left, then Quattlebaum Rd. will be the first right. I have been told that the place was on the left about 1/2 mile from the intersection.
Gen. Quattlebaum family gravesite is off Bagpipe Rd, which turns off Quattlebaum Rd. to the right. I have not been there in several years, but it is a small dirt rd to the right about 1/2 after turning. If you can't find it, I would suggest contacting a local Sons of Confederate Veterans chapter, which should know of the gravesite.
You probably already have an answer to your query, but since I just found it, will answer anyway. I am a gr gr granddaughter of Mathias, Jr. According to the Shealy history, his wife was Catherine Shealy, daughter of John Wendel Shealy and Anna Maria Epting. There is a Shealy family history at: www.palmettoroots.org
Click on the Links the family names will come up.
Quattlebaum MIA

I have hit a major brick wall, but I am not sure if this is due to lack of information, or lack of experience!

My husband's grandfather was Robert Nelson Quattlebaum b. 16 Jul 1916 (sometimes listed as Robert Lee). His father was Robert Lee Quattlebaum b. 06 Feb 1881 (Mississippi).

From here...it's a mess. Grandma's memory is sketchy at best, and wrong at worst. She claims Robert Lee Quattlebaum's dad was also Robert Lee, son of Wilks Quattlebaum of Yazoo County, MS. I know this probably seems laughable, as Wilks/Wilkes Quattlebaum is not documented as having a son Robert Lee. (And, it seems that much is known about Wilks.)

So, I am missing 1 or 2 generations of Qauttlebaum's that seem like they would probably be the missing links for me!

Robert Lee Quattlebaum seems to have dropped on to the earth without a mother or father, as far as I can tell from records (census records, draft registration, MM Quattlebaum book, etc.). I am wondering if perhaps he is illegitimate? Due to poor record-keeping back then, I'm not sure where else to look for his parent's names. Perhaps he is a "junior," but, again, grandma really may not know.

It seems silly that this is such a mystery. From old albums that I found, it seems that Robert Nelson Quattlebaum (my husband's grandfather) and the family actually attended family reunions in Arkansas and South Carolina. You'd think someone would remember how they are related to these folks!

If anyone has any info or suggestions of where I should look next, I'd appreciate it!

Thank you for your quick reply. I'll get my map & see where Little Mountain is. I could see it's off of 26 but haven't been able figure-out where-at off of 26. Are records good at Newberry? I'm in Edgefield right now & I think I've pulled about everything available here. With the counties/district frequent changes, it's a challenge to determine where to go for records. My connection to the Quattlebaums is that ... my 4th great Aunt married Moses Ezekiel. When you see "Moses Ezekiel married Fereby" ... that's my aunt. They never show her last name. Guess people don't know who she is. She was Phereby Ward, dau of Shadrack Ward Sr (my 5th great grandfather).
again, thanks a million.
Melanie Ward

Mathias gave his daughter, Rachel Quattlebaum Feagle, 150 acres of land. Perhaps that will help. The Old Feagle Place was located near I-26 on the Little Mountain side, according to the winter edition of the Old Newberry District Chapter Quarterly. There are several pages on the descendants of this line in this current issue, available at 406 East Florida Street, Clinton, SC 29325. I am a descendant of Johannes, brother to Mathias.

Not sure if anyone is still active on this thread. If so.... I'm planning a visit to the area this spring and would like to visit this cemetery. Does anyone have an address or nearby intersection that would provide a marker to this cemetery? I understand that it is on HWY 67 on the Greenwood/McCormick County line.
