Hi! Just spotted your message re Quay surname. I'm a QUAYE from the Isle of Man - there aren't many of us but there are plenty of Quayle's! Quaye/Quay may have been the same as Quayle at some point but us Quaye's firmly believe we are different!! The Quay's (without the 'e') did show in old Manx records but the latest manx phone book shows no Quay family names.

If you are still around, and still interested, I would be happy to forward any information I get about Nancy's ancestors. I am presently trying to document Archibald's marriage to Jane Clark for a DAR application, so I am on an active hunt.
I have found very little on Archibald Quay. Several trees in Ancestry.com have him as the father of John and Robert Quay but no sources were given. Archibald was on the State Tax List for Mahoning Township 1778-1780 and 1783-1784, 1785

There was an Elizabeth Chalfant in Chester County who married a Quay (See Chester County, Pensylvania Wills, 1713-1825, Ancestry.com. This was probably, Archibald, because in 1799, Archibald deeded land to Robert Chalfant, Chester County, who was most likely his father in law. (See, http://dsf.chesco.org/archives/cwp/view.asp?a=3&q=634819...

I would be very interested in anything you find on Archibald. Thanks.

David Quay

I am also actively researching the Archibald Quay from Northumberland County, PA. Are you sure you he was formerly from Chester? (That ties them into a large Quay population there, then). Do you know where in Northumberland county he lived (I'm working on that now)? My honest-to-goodness ancestor, Samuel Quay, came "from the Susquehannah", and was born there in 1780. The Archibald Quay you speak of was definitely in Northumberland County in 1781, because he signed a letter to the Supreme Executive Council of the State of PA in August 1781. I think the document refers to the Yankee- Penamite wars. He shows in the 1790 Census, then is not heard from again.

I'm not sure about my ancestory, All Im sure about is that Quays are usually related to one another as there isnt alot.
I understand the surname originates from Basque
and that in the late 1700s they sailed to the british isles, however their ship sunk and a few managed to make it
to Ireland and Scotland,
I'd really like to hear from other Quays out there,
perhaps (most likely) we are related.

Hi Karen, thanks again for the information. Thomas Corbett born 12/1/1864 is all I have for him. Your Jean born 3/4/1860 married Mr Bruce of Tarbet Street Greenock or Gourock and she died in Gourock in 1940. If you click on the first posting of this line (5th Feb 2006) you should see my email address if you need to contact me direct. Look forward to your reply. Gordon

Hello, one thought I had in relation to oliver, was on one of the census's he's registered as a general store keeper, his death certificate has his father James (I have no other info) named as a general store keeper also, I don't know if there is a record that is easily accessable detailing store/shop keepers in glasgow around 1800 that might help with more information of the family. I have a little more details about spouses, Jessie, born 29/3/1866, married a peter nelson, in 1888, oliver died as in infant, robert married a rebecca mcgirr ellioitt, they had 2 children that i found, james, 1895 & robert thomson b 1901. james b 1857 married Janet Baxter in 1883, their children were mary. elizabeth, janet and margaret, I lost Thomas Corbett in the census's. Jeannie, jane had 5 children David, john , james, jane and margaret, (John is the person my husbands family comes from) the problem I have now is there are millions of bruce's and I'm not sure if I have the right ones. If this is info you have i apologise for repeating it, in some respects I look forward to the next census release. In genes reunited, a Helen Knight Quaey is listed with no dates next to and a contact name of John I think, I don't know if this is an avenue you've tried, I wasn't sure if I wanted to pay the money to send the gentleman in email yet - if you know what I mean.
It is also nice to find someone with connections to people I am looking for.
looking forward to hearing from you, karen ;-)
hi karen
Helen and James is my line.
I dont have birthdates for James Quaey and Mary Knight other than around 1831 but I have details of their 9 children.
Jeannie born 3/4/1860 died 1940 in Gourock. In the 1881 census she appears as a tailors machinist.
Annie (Agnes?) born 29/10/1872 died 1927 married 1893.
Mary born 10/10/1852 died 1930 married George Stuart/Stewart an apprentice coppersmith when she was a tailors machinist living at 96 Rutherglen Loan Glasgow. Mary and George appear in the 1880 poor relief register.
Like you, I have very little information about Oliver and his wife other than an estimated birthdate around 1800 and so far cant find them in the 1841 or 1851 Glasgow census.
I hope this helps your search and look forward to your reply,
Gordon

hello, i have very little info about oliver, but i am trying to find more like yourself, my husbands family comes down from James to, his daughter Jane or Jeanie married John Bruce (great grandfather), where i think Helen Knight Quaey a sister married James McCreadie, if this is the right line for you. I lost Agnes and Mary Quaey in the census's unfortunately so am stuck a little bit as where to go, but haven't given up yet. I have details of other children of james, if you don't have them, if that helps. karen

I believe Oliver died in 1867 but so far have been unable to find a birthdate or parents. If you have any details I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks Gordon

JAMES ANDERSON DESCENDANTS

Good Afternoon Laura:
This coming weekend, I plan on taking pictures of the
Anderson Farm cause I pass it every day when I go to work.
Now I was wondering if it is not too much trouble.
Could you list the names from James Anderson down to your husbands name their dates of birth, dates of death and their spouses name and dates of marriage. Cause I have a pretty large folder of the Andersons of Schulykill Township, Chester County, PA. I know that James Anderson came over on the boat with his future father-in-law and future bride (Elizabeth Jerman) in 1713 from Scotland. Then Elizabeth's father bought the land (about 320 acres) for them as a wedding present. The farm is the only part that still remains as part of the Anderson Farm. There is a plaque by the road that mentions 1713. My neighbor is a descendant from the Jerman side. I also know that James and Elizabeth J. Anderson's son, Patrick Anderson was a teacher and he taught the children in the township back then. In the Borough where we live they named one street Anderson Drive.
Keep in touch.
Melinda

Hello,

I wonder if you have been abe to find out more about your family? I realize your query was posted in 2002...

I also have Coleman, Anderson and Quay, plus others in the family who married Boone. I wonder if your family was from eastern PA first, went to western PA, then perhaps down the Ohio River to what is now West Virginia... My Andersons were from Scotland. They were frontiersmen who settled quite early in the wilderness of what would become West Virginia. I don't recognize the name Southall, but interesting how the others seem to be consistent with my family, too.

Good luck,
Laura
