Hello,

I'm thinking about my QUAYLE ancestors again, and found old postings which mentioned that Edward and Mary (POWE) QUAYLE / QUAIL might have had 9 children. And another daughter, Julia QUAYLE, married in 1860 to Thomas RAIN.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

Thank you for your reply Raymond - Could you tell me how to go about locating your tree on ancestry.com?

I heard from a gentleman who has different info for parents of Jane and he may be right - wanted to compare it with your family tree. He contacted the Isle of Man in 1989 and received the following reply from The Rectory at Ballaugh:
Baptism May 14th 1797 Jane Cannell
Jane daughter of Thomas Cannell and Christine Cannon

Baptism February 9th 1803 Charles Quayle
Charles son of John Quayle and Esther Casement

Marriage Register 1808 to 1849 entry 55
25th January 1825
Charles Quayle bachelor and Jane Cannell spinster both of
this parish were married in this church 25th January 1825

Thanks, Martha

Charles Quayle, Jane Cannell

Looking for help on the Isle of Man ancestry of Charles Quayle and his wife Jane (Cannell) Quayle. I have hit a dead end and their common IOM surnames make research more dubious.
What Records I Have Found:
Jane was christened 15 Jan 1796, Michael, Isle of Man which includes her parents name - William Cannell and Catherine Corlett.
Parents, William Cannell and Catherine Corlett, were married 17 Nov 1781, Lezayre, Isle of Man. Witnesses were Chas Crow; John Corlett, btp(both of this parish).
Charles and Jane were married 25 Jan 1825, Michael, Isle of Man.
Charles Quayle and his wife Jane (Cannell) Quayle came to America sometime between the birth of their son William (born 18 Oct 1825, Kirk Michael, Isle of Man) and the birth of son Amos (born 15 Jul 1830, Ontario Co, NY. They both died in Richmond, Ontario Co, NY.
One researcher stated Charles left from Liverpool on the ship India with his family and his mother Ellenor, BUT a photocopy of the original passenger list only shows Ellenor Quayle age 56, followed by Charles age 27. Jane and son William are not listed, so I have doubt this is the same Charles.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you.

QUAYLE family in Whitehaven, Cumberland, and Liverpool, Lancashire

Hello,

I'd just like to repost my interest in my ancestor and his family, Edward QUAYLE, reportedly born in Liverpool, Lancashire in 1802. But during 1830's and 1840's, he and his wife and children were in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England. Edward had married Mary POWE in Whitehaven in 1819, and I am descended from their daughter, Elizabeth, b1831 in Whitehaven. In 1851 in Liverpool, she married Evan CORKILL, and they had 7 children who were all raised in Liverpool.

Edward seems to have been a son of William and Margaret (?) QUAYLE, but I don't know anything about them. They are mentioned by other researchers.

When Mrs. Elizabeth CORKILL died ~1871, their 6 surviving children were sort of orphaned, as their father was a mariner and was always - out to sea. So, the 5 youngest children were taken to the Liverpool Sheltering Homes in 1873. Their oldest son was on the Akbar Training Ship and somehow he went to British Columbia, Canada, in 1873. In 1874, his younger siblings were all sent to Nova Scotia, Canada, as part of the UK's Child Migrant Scheme.

The oldest daughter, Mary E. CORKILL, b1860 Liverpool, married another "Child Migrant" "Stanley" LEWIS, in Nova Scotia in 1879. They migrated to Massachusetts in 1881 and raised .13. children there.

(Evan was one of the oldest of 10 children of John and Esther (CORKILL) CORKILL on the Isle of Man. I know there are many QUAYLE families on the Isle of Man.)

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists and 3 Boards) (I started up a List for CORKILL and for "Child-Migrants-UK," etc.)

(Am very curious why the QUAYLE List is .very. inactive.)

Hello. I know this discussion was 10 yrs. ago, but I thought I'd offer a brief summary of my ancestors.

Evan CORKILL, b1827 Isle of Man, was a mariner. In 1851 he married Elizabeth QUAYLE, b1831 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England. She was one of several children born to Edward QUAYLE, who seems to have been born in 1802 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. His father was probably William QUAYLE. I don't go further back from that.

Evan and Elizabeth had 7 children and they were raised in Liverpool, England. They lost one son at 10. After Elizabeth died ~1871, the 5 youngest went to the Liverpool Sheltering Homes. The 6 children were all shipped to Canada. Evan lived a long life and even remarried. I don't know if his children in Canada knew that.

There oldest daughter, Mary E. CORKILL, b1860 Liverpool, would become my great-grandmother. In Nova Scotia she married "Stanley" LEWIS who had been born in Liverpool in 1859. They had been part of the UK's Child Migrant Scheme.

By the way, I'm very curious why the QUAYLE List is a .very. inactive List.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists and 3 Boards) (There is a CORKILL List, which is also very inactive.)

As far as I know they had a son John J Quayle in the IOM. He was my Great Grand Father. When his father died, soon after Margrette re-married a man named John. He worked as a stable man. They came over to the United States together. I'm also trying to find out more John Quayle. But I have a mother who for some reason won't share anything. And she has alot. Land deeds, Parish info. etc.

Re: James and Eleanor Quayle

Hello! Just to let you know what I remember: Dad (James), Marjorie and Jean remained in N.Amer. Edith went to back to Europe and eventually married Michael Crow - last I heard ('98) they were in Belgium. Jean married John Burns and they lived in New York City. Their daughters are Eleanor and Sarah. Marjorie married Aiden Merrow (spelling?), also stayed in New York city and has one son, Jimmy. Dad married my mother Olive in 1948 and went to BC to start his medical practice sometime in the mid-1950's. I am the only child from my father's first marriage. He married Sandy in 1969 and has two children with her, Heather and Jimmy. Marjorie and my Dad are both deceased - no one from our end has heard anything from Jean or Edith since about 2005.

James Quayle 1835,born in Edinborough Scotland was my late husband's ggrandfather. He worked as an instrument maker in Scotland and later moved to London where he carried on with the work until an accident meant he could no longer use his hands well. After A period when he tried to run a shop he set up a feather business with his family. They made ornamental feather objects such as fans etc. I believe.
None of this info has come from my husband's direct family but has been told to me by the family of my husband's grandmother's sister so I think it is true.
I have no idea where Thomas, the father of James came from but I suspect it was the Isle of Mann.
James married Louisa Mayhew. I would like more info about Thomas Quayle.

Hello, I'm looking for any Quayles in central NY, especially in Herkimer County. My great great grandfather, Robert Quail, came to the Frankfort area from England in 1867. His son Daniel Quail is my great grandfather. Family legend has it that at least one of Robert's other sons, due to some sort of disagreement, cut ties with the family and changed the spelling of the name to Quayle. One of the sons was William. I am interested in information about the family and would love to get in touch with any distant cousins out there!

Jane Quayle (1778-1855)was from Peel on the island, but it's such a small place there's almost certainly a connection somewhere. Also the Manx community in Liverpool in the early 19th century was very close knit. I wonder if you have any details of the father of the earliest Thomas you mention, as he would have been about of Jane's generation? She married a Corkhill and their descendants all lived in the areas of Liverpool where your Quayles lived - Bootle, West Derby, Everton - until the early 20th century.I'm interested in finding out about Jane's brothers who left for Ohio, so any background stuff you might have on early Manx settlement in the USA would be helpful. I do have a picture of Jane if you're interested - If you give me an email address I could send a copy.

Quayles from Marown IofM to Liverpool to USA
THOMAS QUAYLE (1837MarownIofM-d. after 1891Liverpool) was a lamplighter in Liverpool, Lancashire. His wife was MARY ANN QUAYLE (nee BELL b.1835 in Douglas,IofM- d. Liverpool). Their children were WILLIAM T., ROBERT HUGH QUAYLE (b.1872Liverpool-d.1922 in the US--my grandfather), FRANK, ELEANOR J., & EMMA, all born in Liverpool, Lancashire. This family lived in the Everton section of Liverpool. William T. Quayle was a stationer in 1891, and Robert Hugh was a stockbroker clerk in 1891 (possibly a cotton broker later). Eleanor was a seamstress. ROBERT HUGH QUAYLE came to Portsmouth, VA, USA, in 1914 with his wife and children, but died in 1922 here. When he left the UK, he listed his brother FRANK as his closest relative; Frank was then living in Bootle, Lancashire.

The parents of the above Thomas Quayle were THOMAS QUAYLE (1807-1880Marown--farm overseer and surveyor) and LETITIA KELLY (1814-1879Marown). Parents of above Mary Ann Bell were WILLIAM BELL (b.1797 in PeelIofM--a cooper) and ELEANOR GARRETT (b.1800 in England).

Would like information on the family in Liverpool or Isle of Man and will share information in the USA.

Robert Quayle above was married to Caroline Hancox in West Derby Liverpool in 1903. They settled in Portsmouth, VA, where he died in 1922. I have a photo of him from 1922 and couldn't get it attached to this posting.

Betty Pace -- bapace2@juno.com
My ggg grandmother was Jane Corkhill (nee Quayle) (1778-1855) from Peel on the Isle of Man. She married James Corkhill in Liverpool in 1803 and they remained there for the rest of their lives. Anyway, according to my Grandad's old family tree Jane had three brothers named Thomas (born 1793), Daniel and William who all migrated to Ohio, USA (1820s or 30s?) Their parents were Patrick and Ann (nee Kewley) Quayle. Grandad never did find out what happened to these three brothers, and I'd love to hear from anyone who might have any information.

Hello, we are just beginning to research our IOM family.
I have a death certificate for my grandmother, Winifred Mae Kelly, that confirms her parents' names are: Charles Kelly and Emily Quayl or Quayle. Winifred had a sister, also named Emily. Winifred born in IOM 26 May 1903. We don't know how/when Winifred immigrated to the US-still researching. Could our families be related?

For anyone interested or those who don't have the info, I found Daniel Quayle and family on a New York Passenger list.
Here's the information:

Ship Henry Pratt from Liverpool, England arriving New York 30 June 1843

Daniel Quail 40
Mrs. Quail 33
Margaret Quail 8
Jamima Quail 6
Jane Quail 4
Susan Quail 2

Daniel Quail can also be found listed on the 1875 Kenosha County Directory Town Wheatland - says he's a farmer, P.O. Bassett's, owns 160 acres, sec. 22E.

He bought land in 1844 (120 acres) and 1848 (24.4 acres) in Kenosha County section 22E.

He's listed in the 1850 census in Wheatland, Kenosha County, Wisc. and in 1860, 1870, 1880 in the town of Randall, Kenosha County, Wisc. His wife, Margaret, and some children are also there.

His daughter Jemima Quayle was the first wife of John Solomon Young. They were living in Salem, Kenosha Co. WI in 1860 with son, Leonard Eugene Young. John Solomon was an apprentice blacksmith. They later moved to Chicago where he was a blacksmith on the railroad.

They had three children: Leonard E. born c. 1859 WI, Nellie born c. 1865 IL. and John Franklin born c. 1868 IL. Jemima died either there or in McHenry Co. Illinois in 1871. John remarried and moved after the 1880 census of McHenry Co. IL first to Tulare Co.,California and then to Sonoma Co. Ca. where he died 31 Dec 1906.

Nellie Young died in McHenry Co. Il. Jan 1883 of Pulmonary Tuberculosis. I have her death record.

Leonard Eugene Young born c. 1859 died in Tulare Co. Ca. in Dec 1883. I just found this info. I'm waiting for his obituary now.

John Franklin Young and his father, John Solomon Young are found in census records of CA and the Great Registers of CA for 1882, 1891 and 1896. Leonard is not listed and may have stayed in Illinois to care for his sister until her death. He may have come to CA sometime in 1883. Perhaps his obit will shed light on his movements.

John Franklin Young is last found in 1910 census in Sacramento working as a blacksmith. I've found no record of him after that. I can't find him on CA death indexes.

John Solomon Young's daughter, Maude Eugenia Young, born 1874 IL. to 2nd wife Sarah Ann (Darrell)Young married my husband's grandfather Edward E. Harris.

She loved her half-brother John Franklin Young dearly and named her son, my husband's father, John Franklin Harris after him. The family said John Franklin Young just disappeared one day and no one ever heard from him again. His whereabouts are a mystery.

Hope this information helps anyone searching for Daniel and family.

Sherry Harris
