James and Bridget Quinn/Quin

Hello, I am trying to find information on my 2g-grandfather James Quin (abt 1822) and his sister, Bridget (abt 1827). They immigrated together in 1851. Family story has it that he was born in Fermoy, Cork, but I cannot find a baptism or birth record for a James or Bridget in Cork in the correct time frame. They sailed from Limerick and arrived in New York. I can find records of multiple James and Bridget Quins in the right timeframe in Limerick, but they do not appear to be siblings.

My main focus is finding the names of their parents and other siblings. Any information or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Could you please look for a line coming from John Quin out of PA, Born late 1700's to early 1800's, married to a Margaret or Margarita (Richard), with a son named Augustus. There were probably more children from that marraige. I have no other information on John Quin. But I sure would appreciate a lead.

Our Quin's reportedly came from Scotland, but we have no documentation to that fact. Augustus was born in 1831 in Bucks Co. PA. Married to Ann Williams. They settled in Pottsville, PA. Children William, Charles, John Harrison, Margaret, Robert Augustus, Theodore, Susan Emma, Annie May. Some of them later took residence in Georgia, TN is not on our list but no way to know for sure.

Bless you for preserving this document and looking for the actual family. Being and avid genealogy researcher, in your shoes, I would do the same.

I am located in Dublin Ireland and have been researching my family tree for a number of years. Eliza (Quin) Jackson and Jane (Quin) Healy were sisters and they were both born in Ballymackey, Co Tipperary. Their sister Sarah (Quin) Ryan was my Great Grandmother. Two more sisters, Harriet and Mary Anne and two brothers George J and Oder also emigrated to the USA. Sarah was the only sibbling remaining in Ireland. Their parents were George Oder Quin and Margaret Williams. Please let me know your connection with the Quins.
Regards,
Tony Mackey

Hi Judy
I am currently in Dallas on my way home. I did meet the owners of the Quin home in Holmesville. Nice people. They promised to keep me updated on events. I took pictures of the exterior of the house and the cemetery which I will post next week. Mr Gibson has formed a group who clean up the cemetery at certain times of the year and boy does it look better. I went to Pride, LA to see if I could find any info on Emma Eoline Quin but did not.
My father said the Quins are Baptist.
While I was in Mississippi Jerry sent the the Hugh Quin Book which I will see when I get home.
Take Care
Carroll

Thanks, actually the book came just this past week. Hope your visit went well--if you spoke with the owners did they mention anything about PBS doing a bit on the house? Would like to travel to N. Carolina this summer to find those properties--just a whim. There are some ambiguities in the records about the Quins--- were they Catholic or protestant. Read an interesting chapter on Andrew Jackson from a book I think entitled How Abraham Lincoln Learned to Read. Jackson was from the same part of N. Carolina as the Quins and his family came originally from Scotland--then Ireland and last Carolina. judy a

Hi Carroll,
It wasn't a bound, published book. It was a typed -- manual typewriter, with manual erasures -- single-spaced manuscript that was loosely kept in a paper cardboard folder. I was never able to tell who wrote it, because the paper was disintegrating and I was afraid to handle it much. What little checking through it I did, I was never able to see who actually took credit for compiling it. There was a DAR certificate in it, so I felt it might have been that lady's handiwork. However, I don't remember whose name was on the certificate.

I'm sorry I'm not able to be of more help. Have you contacted Rebgirl to see if she will share this information with you?
Best regards,
Betty

I don't know if they were married in the US or in Ireland. Thanks to anyone who has any information on these two families.

I contacted Jerome sometimes in the spring of this year. He has another edition of the family in North Carolina but he never mailed it to me after I sent him a check. The check was not cashed so I suppose he forgot about it. I was in McComb about 9 months ago and visited the old home. This is the one that was lived in by the Doctor Quin in Holmesville. It is easy to find if you go to Holmesville Cemetery and continue down the road to the square. The couple who own it now had just remodeled it and showed my husband and I through it. They told us a couple of stories about the Quin family but they are not related.to the Quins. Supposedly PBS is to do some sort of program about people moving West during the 1800's and the house was to be on the show. The McComb library has Jerome Hafter's book and some other papers in their genealolgy section if you have time to explore. Good luck and enjoy. Judy

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for your email. I sent the manuscript to a lady in MS (I'm not sure from your email if this is your cousin or not -- her user id is Rebgirl and is listed in the posting after my initial query) who felt this might be part of her husband's family. Of the people who contacted me, she seemed to have enough of the pertinent facts that made me think it was possibly the same family. You might contact her and see if Emma Eoline Quin is listed in there. It was quite an extensive manuscript, containing the lady who put it together DAR certificate, typed by manual typewriter and the pages were beginning to disintegrate. My thought is that it was assembled prior to 1950. Good luck in your search!
Betty Aronson

Dear Mr. Hafter, I am a Peter Quin descendant. My grandfather was Ernest Quin. I have a copy of the family history that I copied at the McComb Library. My immediate family knew nothing of their relatives and I would be interested in updating the lineage from our side. In March I visited HOlmesville cemetery and stumbled upon the home of a doctor Quin whose home had been recently renovated in Holmesville. My name is Judy Anderson and I am descended through my mother , Addie Quin McGee.

Hi Kelly,
This long document begins with 3 brothers who migrated from Ireland to the Colonies - John, Hugh and Peter. Peter, who is the focus of at least the beginning of the document, was born in 1750. The 3 brothers split up when they arrived - one went west, one went north and one (Peter) went south eventually ending up in Mississippi. I don't know if you're right Quins' but you certainly seem to come closer to this than any of the other responses I have had. The manuscript is very fragile - typed single-spaced on a manual typewriter on very thin and now very OLD paper. Pieces of the paper break off everytime I touch it so I've not gone through the entire thing, therefore I don't know how much of Hugh's family is dealt with here. But I will be very happy to send this to you if you send me your address. I think when you see it, you'll know why I couldn't bear to see it trashed and why I rescued it from the "free" box at this yard sale nearly 3 yrs ago. I've been carting it around ever since, hoping I'd find the right family to send it to, that would be able to use and treasure it. I can only hope that it does contain information that will be meaningful to your family.
Best regards and Deo Vindice,
Betty
Hi Betty,
Thanks for answering. Yes I'm a MS girl, lived here all my life and proud of it :). Ok I have some names from husband's ancestry. Begins in 1723 with Hugh Quin married to Margeret Fondren, parents of Peter Quin Sr. and Daniel Quin, then Peter Quin Sr. married Judith Robinson and they had Daniel, Richard, Nancy, Peter Jr., then Peter Quin Jr. fathered Wallace, Lucius, Lula, George, and Emma possibly some other children with Deliah Bearden. Wallace fathered Ernest who fathered Lucius who fathered my husband, Harold. Good to hear from another REBEL girl, hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you,
Kelly Quin

Are you from MS? I love your user name! I just want to see it go to the right family tree!
Thanks for responding,
Betty Aronson
(also a Rebel girl)

Hi Rosalie,
I don't know if this may be pertinent to your family or not. According to the manuscript, the 3 brothers who immigrated from Ireland were Peter, John and Hugh. One went north, one out west and Peter Quin came south and settled in Mecklenburg Co., VA. Peter was born in 1750 and died 1824 in MS. If your grandfather immigrated, it may be he came over in the Great Potato Famine in the 1860s. If you can give me more information, I'd verify it against the manuscript and see if it does indeed appear to be your family. I just want to see it go to the right family tree.
Thanks for responding,
Betty Aronson

Patrick Quinn (Quin) was born in Ireland c1827. He married Bridget McHone c1840, he was a shoemaker and their first child Hugh was born in Ireland in 1841. They then moved to the Newcastle, England area and had a further 6 children.
Bridget died in 1867 in Newcastle
The 1871 census appears to show him as married but there is no wife living with him.
The 1881 census shows him as married to a woman called Alice but I can't find a marriage certificate for them.
I think she might have died in 1863 but I have still to validate this.
If anyone can help with more informnation for me I would be grateful
Fiona

My name is Rosalie Petersen
I am starting a search on my mother's side. Her name was Mary L. Quin. She was born 1909 and died 2001 in Montana. Her father was Henry Quin. Possible initials of J.C.? A cousin of mine mentioned than Henry had brothers and about their family immigrating from Irland. Henry went west, another might have become a firefighter in Chicago or NY and another went south and started a business? Maybe the J in his name is for John?

The manuscript (which is lengthy) begins with "The first mention of the Quin family in America is that three brothers came from ireland sometime prior to the American Revolution. These brothers were named Peter,John and Hugh. One of the brothers went north, one went west and Peter Quin came south and settled in Mecklenburg County, VA." It goes on to state that he was born in Ireland April 11, 1750 and died December 29,1824 in Holmesville, MS. Of his direct descendants, I didn't see a Thomas Quin, which probably wouldn't be relevant since they weren't the emigres. I didn't go through the entire manuscript because the pages are crumbling. Let me know if I can help further.
B)

I found a hand-typed manuscript on the Quin family in America in a "free Box" at a yard sale in Sumner Co., TN. The family giving the sale didn't know how it came to be in their possession, hence the *free* disposal. As a family researcher, I couldn't bear to see it tossed away when someone out there might be looking for just this information! The TN State Archives had no interest in it as there is no noticeable link to anyone in TN. I am hopeful that somewhere, someone will see this and have an interest in this manuscript. The lady who did this research also left her DAR certificate in the book -- Willie Quin East from the Horseshoe Robertson Chapter. Please contact me and give me whatever documentation you possess on this line(s) and I'll see that the manuscript goes to its proper home.
