Quirin origins: LeQuier of France?

Does anyone know if the Quirin name is related to the French name LeQuier? In my family's history, George Quier from Saarbrucken was descended from French Huguenots who changed their name from LeQuier to Quier when they fled to Germany.

I am having a tough time finding any Quiers in Saarland, but there are plenty of Quirins. I am wondering if anyone has any information on if these names are related.

George Quier b.1730 - Saarbrucken to Pennsylvania

I am looking for my ancestor George Quier (b. Dec. 21 1730 in Saarbrucken, Germany, d. May 9, 1803 Northampton, Pennsylvania). He came to America in 1750, possibly with 2 brothers. His parents died when he was young (before 1750). He had 2 wives: the widow Muellerin/Miller (married before 1755) and Maria Elisabeth Staudt (married 1762 in Northampton, PA).

Because I can find nothing for George Quier before he came to America (not even a passenger list), I think his name may have been something else. There are very few Quiers in Germany, but many Quirins, especially in the Saarland area.

If anyone has any helpful info I would be happy to hear it.

Wonder if you can supply me with any details of Joseph Quirin of Manchester as he related, business wise, to Euclide C. Chagnon. Quirin I think was a partner or backer in Chagnon's venture into a shoe dealership in Manchester. Believe he was an entrepreneur type involved in grocery stores. Was he the same one who imported wines and liquors and was later president of a local coal company?

Hi Cindy (sobusc54),
You have helped me further in my research on the Porta family! Thank you!!

But wondered if you could tell me... Did George Porta & Barbara Bohnert also have a daughter, Wilhelmina married to a Haas, that remained in Germany?

Also, I'm trying to sort out which children were born to Marian Wolf and Barbara Quirin, while married to Charles Porta. I understand there was 30 children total.

Lastly, Peter Quirin had a sister named Barbara. Do you happen to know if there is any connection between her and the Barbara Ann Quirin who was married to Charles Porta?

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

I had sent you an e-mail with these question, but not sure you received it.

Regards,
Lori
Descendant of Peter & Barbara (Quirin) Wolf

Hi Cindy,
Saw you were seeking information on Karolina Porta and thought this might help.

George Porta Jr. b.1812 married Barbara Bohnert. Their children were: John Porta, Charles Hillarde Porta Sr., Caroline Porta (Karolina?) and Christina Porta.

Caroline Porta (b.24 Feb 1852) married Peter Quirin (b.11 Nov 1844) on 27 Apr 1872. Children of Caroline Porta and Peter Quirin were: Katherine Quirin, Peter Quirin, George Quirin, Margaret Quirin, John Quirin, Charles Quirin, Wilhelmina Quirin, Joseph Quirin and Mary Quirin.

Charles Hillard Porta Sr. b. 28 Jul 1845, (also known as Karl or Carl) was married twice...first to
Barbara Ann Quirin (b.1852, d. 25 Nov 1887) in 1868 (14 children) and then to Marian C. Wolf (my great grandmother)in 1888 (15 children).

If your mom is Susan Roth married to Jay Smyers and you also have a brother Brian then you are probably a decendent of George Porta Jr.

Regards,
Cindy Keller Sobus (sobusc@gmail.com)

Hi Cindy,

Yes, if I remember right, I have very limited information on the Quirin parents (not grandparents)--first name only, I think. My computer has been down for weeks now, so I don't have access to my genealogy file at the moment. It's backed up (phew!), but not easily accessible. I have limited information on the Portas--can't remember what exactly. I'm not directly related to them, but had hoped they'd be a helpful collateral line. They also just interested me--there are some really interesting marriages among Wolfs and Portas.

You may find this information on these families useful (scroll to find the Portas & Quirins):
http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/obits-p.htm
http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/obits-q.htm
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi (search)

I would absolutely love to share more information with you on these lines. Please contact me again in a few weeks. Perhaps if we put our lines together, we might make more progress.
Jen

Is this the Barbara Quirin you are researching? Let me know.

Obit from Altoona Mirror October 1, 1898 ( front page column 2)

Found dead in bed

An Elderly Lady of Allegheny Furnace Died During the Night.

Mrs. Peter Wolf, a resident of Allegheny Furnace, was found at 6:30 this morning in her bedroom, cold in death. She retired last night about the usual time and did not complain of feeling unwell, with the exception of a slight cold in the head. Shortly after 6 o'clock this morning her youngest daughter, Margaret, who occupies a bed in the same room, awoke and, dressing hastily, went downstairs. She expected to find her motherthere, as usual, the latter person being a very early riser.
As her mother did not appear, Margaret went back upstairs and into her room, and there upon the bed she lay dead. The coroner was notified, but upon his arrival he deemed an inquest unnecessary, deciding that death was due to heart failure.
Mrs. Wolf's maiden name was Quirin. She was born in Germany sixty-three years ago and came to Altoona in'84. Her husband died five years ago. The following children, all of whom reside in Altoona, survive: Peter, Adam, Jacob, John and Maragret Wolf; Mrs. Barbara DeTemple, Mrs. Mary Porter, Mrs. Elizabeth Helsler, Mrs. Katie Porter. One brother, Peter Quirin of Altoona, also survives. Deceased was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church.
The funeral will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Mary's church. Interment in St. Mary's cemetery.

I'm searching for this Peter Quirin's sister, Barbara (1835, Ger. - 1898, Altoona). In abt 1857, Barbara married Peter Wolf (1831-1894).

Incidentally, two other Portas married children of the Wolfs. I haven't been able to figure out if these Portas are related to Karolina, but I have a strong suspicion that they are. Both are named Charles ("Karl").

I believe Peter & Barbara's parents' names are John and Margaret.

My father's family originated from Bas-Rhin Alsace and had been there till my Grandfather moved to Colmar in the Haut-Rhin region of Alsace once he married sometime in the late 1930s/early 1940s. Most of my direct family is from Haut-Rhin and I have a large number of more distant relatives in Bas-Rhin. My father emigrated to New York City in the late 70s. I do not know much more about the Quirin family before my Grandfather's generation. I do know that their are few in my family that still carry the Quirin name as many are female and have married. Thus far I am the last member of my generation within my family who still holds the Quirin name.

If you have any information about the Quirin family from Alsace please feel free to share. I have been unable to find much information that pertains to my family.

QUIRIN's in Hungary

My aunt married a Lajos QUIRIN and has 4 children, one son and three daughters. Lajos (Louis)'s father was Leo QUIRIN. The QUIRINs originally came to Hungary (I believe) from Germany as iron smelter engineers and helped establish Hungary's iron producing industry. Leo QUIRIN was chief executive of the largest Hungarian iron and steel factory and was a member of the Upper House. I don't know where in Germany the family originated from. It is a very unusual surname in Hungary.

HELP - Quirin's in Marcus IA

My grandma was Daria Quirin. She was born to Charles Quirin and Emma (Riley) Quirin. She lived in Marcus, IA, on a farm. She had sisters named Alice, Agnes, Margaret and Mary, and brothers named Lyle and Chales. I believe that she also had an uncle named Evan. This is the extent of my information, other than spouses for her and her sisters. Both young men died unmarried. I can't find any records, burial sites, anything to help me work on that family tree. It is as though they did not exist! I really hope to find information, so if any of you can help, please email me.

Kelly Hunsaker

Peter P. Quirin was born in 1835 in St.Ingbert (now in the Saarland- belonged then to Bavaria
).to Johann Quiring and Barbara Schweissthal. He had 4 younger brothers: Nikolaus, Johann Josef, Georg, and Paul. He came to St.Clair, PA about 1854 where he married Catherine Stief. PeterP's Death 1892

Peter P. had sons John and Peter G. Around 1890 Peter G. went to Pittsburgh. I think there he married Franziska M. Bauer (her brother ws a priest). They had 2 sons: Pierre and JOhn. Franziska died in 1899.Peter G. was again in St. Clair. Eventually the son John went back to Pittsburgh. Peter G. remarried in St. Clair (Schuylkill Co)

On the Internet I found a Peter Quiring 1858 St. Ingbert son of Johannes Quiring(1821-1876) who moved to Pittsburgh after 1881, but I can't figure out a relationship

www.family search.org
I don't have much info on my great-great grandmother, Karolina Porta. Here is what I do know. She was born in Germany. She died Sept. 23, 1902 at the age of 50. According to her obituary she was a resident of Altoona for 20 years. This agrees with information from the 1920 census where Peter Quirin (her widower) states year of immigration as 1881. They had 9 children. The oldest 4 were born in Germany. The obituary does not mention her parents or any siblings. I live about 20 miles from Altoona so if you can give me the names and dates of the Portas who were born around 1840-1860 I can check their obituaries for a connection.

Thanks,
David

Dear Connie, I have not been able to find much on my ancestors. I've been told 2 brothers and a sister came from Alsace. The brothers stayed in Altoona and the sister went out west. The brothers were Charles and John. John and Louisa Schmidt had a son John, born Aug.8,1873. I don't know how many other children they may have had. John married Stella(Estella)Seisk, born Oct.30,1876. They were the parents of 12 children. My father Wendelin Anthony, born June 12,1897, was the oldest. I have photos of John and Stella and all their children. My father married Goldie Covey from Marietta, Ohio and were the parents of 12 children. They moved to York,Pa in 1941. I am their 8th child. Does this fit in with anything you have? I am trying to find out what year they arrived in the States and something about our German Roots. Anxious to hear from you. Mary Ann

Bonnie,
I was interested in the name Karolina Porta in your message.I am researching my grandfather, John Porta, who was from Alsace and lived in Altoona, PA. I wonder if there is a connection? I have very little information but have been told he came to the US with a brother and sister.
