Quy in London & Essex (England)

I am looking for relatives of a Francis Quy (spelling of Quy unknown) who lived and worked in London, England. He was the father of my grandmother who was an illegitimate child, brought up in convents and never knew her father and only made contact with her mother later in life. My grandmother is 96 now, but in good health.

She didn't get much information, but her mother (Kate Hendle) said that her father was Francis Quy who was the Butler at 93 Lexham Gardens (house of the Busks), Kensington, London where Kate worked as a maid. They never married or lived together as far as we know.

The only feasible Francis Quy I can track down was born in Stepney, Limehouse, London 1881, possibly died in 1857. Father, John Quy (born in Gosfield Essex), Mother, Sarah Wingrove. John's father was also John born in Gosfield Essex.

I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who may have more information or may be a relative of a Francis Quy who worked in London. Please still contact me even if this post is a good few years old.

Many thanks,

Nick

I would also be interesting to know how you people pronounce our surname

We pronounce it as rhyming with 'Kwai' (as in Bridge over the River Kwai)

However study of the French language keeps making me think it should be pronounced as 'key'

I am not sure for how long or how many generations back we have pronounced the name like that but would be interesting to hear other interpretations!

It is a good story if nothing else and could be based on the truth. There were certainly Quys in England before then. The village of Quy in Cambridgeshire was recorded in the Doomsday book, thats about 950 years ago. However there were also Quys in France. Some French people that I have met expected me to be French not English. One Quy was married into the French nobility and the last Controller of French Overseas Territories or some similar title. One of William the Conqueror's knight's was Simon de Coie (another old variation of Quy) which I understand was based on the person's character; coy / quiet / thoughtful.

All interesting snippets around the Quy family story.

Best regards,
Phil.
Hello Michael. I look into this site every now and then and when I read your message this time the names were familiar to me. My father-in-law is the son of James Quy (b1890) and Elizabeth Sanger (b1896). James was the brother of Alec, your g g grandfather. Therefore it would appear that Albert Christopher was the cousin of my father-in-law(Bernard Quy)and you must be some sort of cousin to my husband, Michael! William and Ann had many children as you may know. Apparently after James and Elizabeth married (1912) they had little to do with the rest of the family although they all lived nearby in Barking, Essex. If you have any other information do please let me know.
Regards Val

I married into the Quy family. As far as I can find out they all came from Barking. My father-in-law says that he was told as a child that his family descended from a French pirate who sailed up Barking Creek (it flows into the River Thames) and settled there around 1700. Good story or fact? I can't find any connection but perhaps I haven't looked in the right place. Any information will be gladly received.

William Quy married Charlotte Wiseman in 1832. Around that time some of the family were travelling between England and Australia. Whilst checking Quy family details I found references to our relatives (Charles Wiseman (1811 - 1873) returning to Sydney Australia in 1839. He had already been to Sydney as an ordinary seaman on the 'Wellington' sometime between 1829 and 1831. He married Ann Eliza Price (1840 - 1914) (Annie) there in St John's Church Parramatta on 02 March 1840, Soon after he became a captain again, probably in August 1840. In January 1841 they lived at Willow Tree Cottage, Pitt Street, Sydney. In 1850 he was involved in establishment of the Grafton Steam Navigation Company and went back to England to obtain a vessel. This was a three masted paddle steamer built by John Laird & Co. of Birkenhead, completed in December 1851 and named "Clarence". Ship details; 212 tons, 150 feet long, cost 13,000 pounds. Upon arrival in Sydney the ship was sold for 30,000 pounds. During his time in England in 1850 he visited his aunts in Paglesham, Essex.

Charles returned to England and had another ship built in 1853. This ship was named Colloroy, and also sold upon arrival in Sydney. Charles returned to England and had another paddle steamer built in 1854. This ship was two masted and named Grafton. During his time in England in 1854 he visited Fred Wiseman in Paglesham, Essex, and arranged for the new family home to be built. It is now called Buckland House.

Another relative Samuel Wiseman (1815 - 1836) was also involved with shipping inAustralian coastal waters. In January 1836 he was on the 'Norval' from Launceston in 'Van Dieman's Land' (Tasmania) bound for Port Philip Bay during a gale in the Bass Strait. The ship put into Western Port to ride the storm out and Samuel was amongst a landing party sent out. However the boat the landing party were in capsized, Samuel Wiseman and all others but one were drowned. Only Mr. Toms was rescued.

Charles' brother Henry Wiseman (1813 - 1850), also sailed in Australian waters. He is recorded as having been in hospital in Sydney in 1839.

For more details read "Paglesham Natives" by Mark & Rosemary Roberts.

My information is very sketchy, but they certainly arrived in Kansas, USA about 1870/71 and they had a homestead somewhere southwest of Formosa. I wondered if anyone with the surname Quy could put her in context for me as apart from her father' name (James Day Quy) and her mother's name (which I think was Sophia Porter) I can't find any other information about her e.g. siblings, although she I know gave birth to my grandfather, Frederick George Hunt in about 1878. Would love to hear from you! Caroline

Hi!

I believe that Ann Emma Parker (my GGG Aunt) married a William Quy in 1873 in Barking. She was also known by the surname Simmons/Simmonds/Simmans, as her mother remarried/ "hooked up with" William Joseph Simmans (etc) after the death of her husband.

According to census returns, Ann and William had at least 10 children - William, Alec, Eliza, Walter, Ada, Beatrice, Christopher, James, Ethel and Albert.

Could this be the same Quy's as yours? I am trying to confirm my theory that the Parker/Simmans families were linked - any info you have on the origins of the Ann (married William Quy) would be very helpful!

martin

My grandfather was John Edward QUY who was a foundling so not really a QUY, but was brought up by William QUY b 1831 in Barking. We must have a link somewhere
brenda

Wendy,

I do not have much information about my Great Grand Father Sydney John Quy's travels. I believe that he was 'Grand Superintendant' or some similar title when he was killed in an accident at Greenwich Naval College in 1915. He may possibly have been resident in that College but that is a guess and would need to be checked.

Other than knowing that the family moved from Essex into London I cannot advise any other relevant details at the moment.

Regards,
Phil.
Phil: I received both messages that you have posted for me. We are definitely distant cousins. This is the most informative information that I have received. Do you know where your Great Grandfather lived when he left Essex? I have been told that my grandfathers parents died and left the farm in Pagelshum (sp?) to the children but they all decided to leave. My grandfater was the only one to remain at the age of 14. Due to his young age, he eventually went his own way.
Your Grand-Uncle is upstairs right now making a spot of tea with a pinch of whiskey! I would love to know more and maybe we can find other distant relatives. Please keep in touch!
Wendy

Wendy,

I think that we might share the family tree. From the details that I have:

Charles Guyon Quy was born in 1883. His brother Sydney John Quy (b1877-d1915) was my Great Grandfather and is buried at Greenwich.
Their father, my Great Great Grandfather was Thomas Quy (b1841-d1906) and mother Ellen Smith (b1845-d1903).
Thomas' parents were William Slack Quy (b1792-d1856) and Charlotte Wiseman (b1811-d1875).
William's parents were James Quy (b1765-d1841) and Rachel Gosling (b?-d1803).
James' parents were William Quy (b?-d1805) and Sarah Turner (b?-d1805).

I have not got any proven links earlier than this.

Regards,
Phil.

Re: Sarah Quy

Rachel,

I do not have a definate link for you but can suggest a few ideas. My family are also from Essex, have links with Totham with my 5xGreat Grand Father being William Quy. He married Sarah Turner who is the earliest Sarah Quy in my proven family records. They both died in 1805. They had seven children the first of which was named Sarah, born 1758. One of her brothers was Thomas Quy, b1763-d1849. he married Anne Wade, b1765-d1841, perhaps they had children but I have not got any record of this. My family line is via another of her brothers, James Quy b1765-d1841 and his wife Rachel who died in 1803. There were another three brothers but as all were named William I guess that the first two died very young. There was also a sister Ann b1761.Perhaps your family is descended from one of these Quys, other than that I cannot help at the moment as I am working away from home and do not have all my reference materials with me.

The name Sarah Quy has continued to be used by the family with my daughter being Sarah Helen Quy b1972. Another Sarah in the family was my Great Aunt Sarah Wiseman Quy b1872-d1958.

It may be of interest to note that in the male line William, Philip and Thomas are frequent names.

Hoping that the above is of interest,

Yours truly,
Phil (Philip William) Quy.

PS. I noted an e-mail address for a Danielle Quy in Australia on another genealogy site which may also provide leads if she wants to follow this up, ( D.Quy@unsw.edu.au ).
