This is very much on the off-chance! My great grandfather was Robert James Rae & I think his father was also Robert Rae. He was born about 1831 in London & lived in London - Lambeth & Wandsworth but I believe they originated from Cumberland. Robert James Rae described himself as an engineer/artizan in the 1881 census and as a retired mining engineer in the 1911 census. He worked at one stage in Barcelona and my grandmother was born there in 1876.

Searching for other stuff in Moorolbark at the same time I chanced upon WW2 records in Australian Archives office for Graeme Walker Rae DOB 27 Oct 1923 POB Mooroolbark Next of Kin: Leslie Rae.
This person would still be alive.
Don't know if any of these names are relevant but it may be worth looking in Victoria Australia.

Hi There
As my Rae line goes back so far in Australia, I have nothing that would relate to your father who is a recent immigrant. But the Rae family have been in Kirkcudbright for generations. One side of the family were powerful ship owners, having a fleet of 40 odd ships at one time. They are lateral relatives of mine. If you are new to ancestry (are you?) then work back from all the information you have on your father--his birth, his parents, his marriage etc. Look on Scotlandspeople for this information, get marriage or birth certificate from Scotland if necessary, as they are fantastic with a huge amount of information. If you get the certificates, you're immediately back to the previous generation, and its well worth the investment. Sorry I can't be more help. Distant cousin Denise

Hi,
you are the first lead I have ever had with the Rae family so hopefully we can find a tie there. my personal email address is robyntodd@westnet.com.au I would love to see what you have, names etc as I have some very uncommon names that had to have come from somewhere. The family story is that the Rae's came from Scotland and used to be McRae's, but I can only go by what Peter said himself on his marraige certificate. I did find a Rae family that went to Tasmania about that time, but I couldnt prove it.
Would love to hear from you, maybe we could help each other out.
Robyn

Hullo. I'm just picking up the thread of this message board. My family are related to the Raes through gtx3 grandfather Alexander Rae who came to Australia as an old man of 70 odd to join all his children who were here by then. His father was Alexander and I believe, though I haven't yet verified, that theIr shipping company was Alexander Rae Co. And then J&J Rae. Indeed they lived in Kirkcudbright, and a branch of the family moved to Liverpool.
The family all came to Bathurst in NSW, the earliest being Robert Rae in 1833. Now why this was is a mystery because Bathurst was an inland town (no ships) and a place where many convicts and military (to guard them) were sent, but as far as I can tell so far, no convict or military Raes.either. The Raes owned 3 ships called Bengairn. I have just received this information so have a lot of work to do following up the threads. I'll get a copy of the book you read. Denise Nisbet

Hello I have been reading a lot of sail books with Captain Rae in them with a Captain james Learmont who was on Bengairn early 1900's. I read the By The Wind book and was very moved as I was an apprentice too 1977 and even though it was a steam ship the same stuff went on.

I'm very interested to know more about Capt Rae when he settled in NSW and in particular if he has any Rae's surviving today.

All the best, Graham Cameron

I was curious if anyone has seen the spelling Riehe for this surname? My grandfather's baptismal record show his father as Cornelius Enright and his mother as Cynthia Jane Riehe. Their first child Minnie was born in Ohio in 1876 and my grandfather was born in 1881 in Solomon, Kansas. Cynthia's last name sounds German, but Cornelius was a Roman Catholic from Co. Limerick, Ireland, so it seems likely his wife would have been Irish Catholic also.

Thanks,
Bill
Hi Melinda,
I am new to this messaging system, and yours seems an old post so I hope this reaches you. I can help you with information on Bathilde Frances Rae. She was my great aunt. She was 7th of nine children of Benjamin Rae (1841, Collin, Dumfriesshire, Scotland - 1908 Carlisle, Cumbria, England) a surveyor, and Rhoda Newberry or Newbury (1847, Dorset - 1913), my great grandparents. I have a copy of their wedding photograph. I have plenty more information which I would be happy to share if this gets through to you. I have very little information as to what happened to her in Australia, apart from the mention of a daughter Edith. Perhaps you could enlighten me?
Hoping this helps,
Imogen

Hi,
I am looking for information on the Rae family in Australia. My partners gg grandfather was Peter Rae who married Sarah Carter in Wagga Wagga, NSW. I have Peter's marraige and death certificates and both list his parents as unknown, and birth place listed as only England, locality unknown. I have worked out that he would have been aprox 4 years old when he went to either Victoria or Tasmania in aprox 1856, but cannot find any immigration or parents that I can try and prove a connection with. There was also another Rae family living in Wagga at the same time, but I am unable to prove any conection.
Any help would be great.
Thanks
Robyn
