Peter Rake of New Jersey

When flipping through some old Wills for New Jersey, I stumbled on the name Peter Rake, who was a Witness for the Will of Isaac Larue on July 5, 1803. Also, a Peter Rake is listed as a Juror in a Supreme Court case in 1785. This places him in Hunterdon County, New Jersey and possibly from Amwell Township where so many other Rake's lived. Based on this information, Peter had to have been born prior to 1767. I don't believe he is a son of John & Else Rake since he was mentioned in John Rake Sr. Will in 1805.

Does anyone have a additional information on him?
Re: The Rake Family

Peter,

I am quite confident that we are indeed cousins, and your kind reply is allowing me to fill out a portion of the family which has been a great challenge and fascination to me.

Let me elaborate (you can find all of this information in the G W Rake family tree: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/21736522/family?cfpid=1125422...).

My father, Geoffrey William Rake (1904 – 1958) emigrated to the US (1928) after receiving his MD at Guy’s Hospital. His father was Herbert Vaughan Rake, MD (1864-1925) of Fordingbridge, Hampshire, England. HVR’s father was Thomas Beaven Rake, MD (1826-1984) also of Fordingbridge.

HVR was one of 11 children of TBR, 8 sons and 3 daughters. The eldest of the sons of TBR was Beaven Neave Rake, MD (1858-1894). BNR was one of the most distinguished experts in tropical diseases, such as leprosy, of his generation, and his untimely death at the age of 36 was due to Yellow Fever, contracted where he was director of the Leper Hospital. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2404814/)

BNR married Margaret Crauford [or Crawford] (1861-1924) in Port of Spain, Trinidad in 1844. They had three sons: Beaven Crawford Rake (1886-1948), Eustace Olpherts Rake (1888-1960), and Theodore Stansfield Rake (1885-1917).

Tracing the three sons of BNR has been a considerable challenge, but I have been able to glean the following:

TSR died early, aged 32 years, and I have not been able to identify a spouse, or any indication that he had issue. Given the year of his death (1917) it is tempting to believe that he was a casualty of WW1, but I do not find his name in the UK Graves Registry. The record in the England and Wales National Probate Calendar lists his death as “… 9 December 1917 in the Red Sea Administration …”.

Eustace Olpherts Rake (1888-1960) joined the British Foreign Service, and appears to have held multiple postings in various African colonies. I have found a photograph from the British Museum archives of “District Commissioner and Mrs. Eustace Rake, 1-Mar-1936, Ashanti, Gold Coast”. He married Muriel Irene Tricker Pollack (1887-1950); I have as yet been able to identify no issue.

Beaven Crawford Rake (1886-1948) was also a UK civil servant, in his case, the Indian Police Service. I have found a ship’s manifest from 1932 recording the arrival at the Port of London of Beaven Rake, Port of Departure Rangoon, Burma, and Profession listed as ‘Indian Police Service’. Until now, I have been unable to identify a spouse, or any issue of BCR. However, given the facts that you relate in your response to my inquiry, I am very sure that BCR was your grandfather, and that Douglas Sydney Peter Rake and his brothers Beaven and Jack were the children of BCR.

Would it be possible to learn your grandmother’s name and dates, and those of your father and uncles?

This response has been quite long, and I apologize for that, but the Beaven Neave Rake branch of the family has been a great source of interest to me, not just for the challenge of finding the records, but also because it is very evident that BNR was very much a role model and inspiration for my father’s career, and even for members of my own generation.

Jim Rake (James Beaven Rake, 1950 - )
James
In short - I don't know.

However, there is a very good chance - I'll briefly explain what I know.

My full name is Peter Crawford Rake - I was told my middle name was a 'family' name; but, I was also told by my mother that I was almost called Beaven.

My father was (died 1995) Douglas Sydney Peter Rake and he had two brothers (Beaven and Jack); he also had three sisters Bubbles (I think her real name was Elgar), Mary-Anne and Jane.

My grandmother married a Colonel Rake (my grandfather); I've seen photos of their 'mansion' in Burma - apparently he was Chief of Police there but I don't know when.

I never met my grandfather - but my grandmother told me that the Rake family was from Fordingbridge and before that from Rake in Surrey (on the old A3).

So, we may be related?

Contact me for more details if you want and I'll try to help; I've only related main 'facts' without the gossip/scandal!

I live in North Dakota so am relatively far removed from being able to randomly visit my ancestor's home areas - at least until I know what I am looking for. I find the documents themselves to be one of the most fascinating aspects of this task. My mother's family was from the Shrewsbury West Virginia area. Her grandfather was John Meade Raike who was a riverman/junkman out of Scioto County Ohio/Kanawha County West Virginia. His father was Frederick Raike, who was the son of Abraham Rake's son Jacob. Verifying Abraham's father is a current issue but am always searching for documentation to shore up all of the relationships. I am glad to hear that you consider footnote.com to be a worthwhile site. I have been debating directions to take. I will check out the two sites you mentioned. Thank you much.

I wanted to bring to everyones attention that William Rake from Hunterdon Co., New Jersey was not born on June 13, 1776 as I've seen on everyones tree. He was actually born on June 13, 1781. I believe this was a simple calculation error by the original supplier. William Rake was in the Court of Chancery for the January Term 1846 where he was recorded saying the following "I was sixty-four the 13th of last June (1845). I have always lived in the county of Hunterdon, except three years, when I lived in the county of Philadelphia. 1845-64=1781. Also, William died in 1850 and listed as being 70 the 1st June 1850. Based on this he was actually still 69 and wouldn't turn 70 for another 12 days.

John Rake Sr. from Hunterdon Co., New Jersey

Like so many others, I have hit a road block with John Rake Sr., who died as a fairly wealthy yeoman in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co, NJ in 1805. The earliest found documented record for him was in 1761, where he is listed as Johannes Rake. I know for fact that he is not Johann Philip Racke nor Johann George Racke. The question is where did he come from? He is not listed in the many compiled immigration books, oathes of allegiance or naturalization documents. His wife's name is Else per his Will. Does anyone know of a John Rake, who may have left England for the colonies prior to 1760?

Donna
I'm fortunate to live in Bucks Co., PA, which is a stone throw across the Delaware River into Hunterdon Co., NJ. I'm actually about 30 years behind a small group of people (Sandra Rake, Helen Poland, Al Hart, A.W. Rake and Ted Rake)that did extensive research the old fashion way before the internet. They were fortunate to have had contact with family members back then that are no longer living today. Sandy and Helen have been most helpful with the various off branches of Rakes' outside NY, NJ, PA and OH. I have a copy of just about everything they've found. I've actually been doing a lot of my research by personally visiting the various archives, libraries, cemeteries and historical societies. I soon will have to go to NY to do research, since this is where I believe John Rake Sr. came from. You'll find that Ancestry.com and footnote.com are about the only useful sites. The rest just lead you around to the same resources. The forums, as you know, are very useful.
Where are you located and how are you related to Abraham?
You best bet is to contact these two places:
http://www.yorkheritage.org and http://www.lancasterhistory.org/

I originally had Abraham associated with Heinrich Casper/Johann Phillip but got John Rake, Sr's 1805 will mixed in there and created conflicts(ie no Abraham!). I will remove the will and start over. Do you have particular sources/source types that you find more reliable than others? What about different web sources/sites that you have found helpful?
Donna
You have to be careful with what is already posted as factual on these families. Many people have speculated where John Rake Sr. came from. I've been working on this seriously for 4 years, even to have my DNA tested. I have tons of documented sources on the Rake family but not so much on the Racke family since they are not related. But in knowing this, I had to research all the variations of the surname spelling. Racke is pronounced as Rockey in German. I have very little information on Abraham Rake. John Rake Sr. was married to Elsa(?)but they did not have a son named Abraham. For the most part, his children are listed in his Will dated 1805.
Abraham was born between 1766-1774. I would look at the children on John George Racke (born 19 Jun 1752)or Johann Philip Racke, who arrive in 1764. He most likely move out to York/Lancaster to be with his brother, Heinrick Casper Racke. John George could not be John Rake because he would have only been 9y/o when witnessing Jacob Housel's Will in 1761 NJ, 11y/o when apearing in court 1763 NJ and 14y/o when conceiving his first son born 1768 in NJ. The name Abraham was never used in the Rake's of New Jersey. Also, take into account the German spiritual and secular naming of children. John George would have been called George by everyone. If you want more information or sources, please don't hesitate to contact me. Geoff
rcds95@aol.com

I am interested in this John Rake Sr specifically because I have an Abraham Rake that I am attempting to attach to a John Rake. Currently I have him as attached to either John George Rake Sr in that area (I have Else etc attached to John George Sr) or Johann Phillip Racke (Phillip Rake) which seems to be another prevailing opinion but recognize that they did not immigrate until later than 1761. How do you know that John Rake Sr is not John George Rake Sr as you stated? Do you have anything on Abraham - mb in the will? I am perfectly willing to drop John George and Phillip as possibilities as his parent but would like a replacement! I appreciate any help you can provide. Donna

Rak/Rok/Rock of Orange Co., New York

There was a Rak/Rok/Rock family in Montgomery Twp., Monroe Co., NY per the German (Dutch) Reformed Church for the baptisms of their children. The parents were Henrick and Maria Andres (various spellings of given and surname). After searching here and elsewhere online, I have found nothing more on this family in this area. Does anyone have any additional information on this family or know where they may have migrated to?

The childrens names were (oldeset to youngest): John, Rebecca, Amoria, Henry, David, George, Elias and Phebe.

Connections between US and UK Rakes

My father was Geoffrey William Rake, he was born in Fordingbidge England. I track the Rake line backwards through Herbert Vaughan Rake (1864-1925), Thomas Beaven Rake (1826-1894), Beaven Rake (1798-1860) and Thomas Rake (1776-1805, Marnhull, Dorset, England). I have not been able to track the Rake line further back than Thomas.

This appears to be the same Rake lineage to which SRake7850 has been referring.

Any suggestions for leads to the earlier family line will be greatly appreciated.

Jim Rake

Samuel K. Rake

I'm looking for any information regarding Samuel K. Rake.
The earliest records that I've found start with the 1830 Census for Warwick Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He appears in the Bucks County Poor School Child Warminster Twp. Tax records which also list many of his children/ages between 1831-1833. Then in B.C.P.S.C. Bedminster Twp. Tax Records Bucks County, PA from 1836-1838. Again in B.C.P.S.C. Warminster 1837,1838, 1840 and 1842. There is some overlapping.

After that, I have found nothing more. Others have told
me he is the the son of Solomon Rake from Hunterdon, New Jersey per John Rake, Sr.'s will and the K , in his middle name, stands for Kitchen (mothers maiden name) though I have found no documentation supporting either claim.

Thank you in advance for you help.

I just sent the picture by snail mail to a woman in Gem, Kansas. I will have her get in touch with you. The picture was of Elmer and Elda standing together smiling. He was dressed in a suit and she was in a blouse and skirt. It was a studio picture taken in Monmouth, Oregon. I bought the picture in an antique mall in Parkland, WA. At the same booth I bought another picture of a family, a man holding a baby, a woman with about a two year old, and two little boys sitting in front who look like they could be twins. The name on the back is Margarette Rake Bassett. It also is a studio picture but has no studio name. Sandi
