Hi, thanks for getting back to me. Apart from Sim being your great uncle too you never mentioned how. His sister Evelyn was married to my grandfather. I already had the info that you sent me, but it is nice to know about new family connections. I have Great Uncle Sim's birth certificate and can confirm that he was actually born "Sim". I too thought at first that it must be short for something, but apparently not.

Hi Ms. Edwards,

I'm writing this on the off-chance that you're still interested in this topic some 10 years later, and use this site! I am a graduate student working on my PhD in History, and am working on court cases in Utah from the 19th century. Alonzo H. Raleigh's estate has been one of the more interesting cases—I have some trial testimony and affidavits (Caroline is one of the affiants) that describe where they lived, lifestyle, domestic work, etc. In any case, I was hoping that (again, 10 years after your original post) you might be interested in sharing information.

Hope you're well, and to hear from you.

Best,

Lillian

Hi, My husband Andrew is also descended from Joseph Amesbury and Caroline Raleigh. He remembers seeing a seal as a boy and only found out it belonged to his grandfather Herbert later as an adult. It was kept by the Christie family (sister of Herbert married a Christie) and never given back to Herbert's children. We would love to see documents and pictures of the Amesbury family as Andrew says not much came their way.
Best wishes.

I am looking for a Cornell family, with connections to Raleigh before the 1800s in England or Ireland.
Our earliest Cornell was William Cornell of Devonport, Cornwall who married Catherine. He was a sailor, so information could be anywhere.
His son,Charles, a merchant (b.1792) married Sarah Ballard in Kent and they lived in Rochester. All their sons emigrated to Melbourne, Australia.

Well I've also been told that I'm a direct descendent of Sir Walter Raleigh. I was told that his granddaughter (maybe great grandaughter) married an Eddolls. Further up our tree we have quite a few Rawleighs awswell. The Eddolls were a farming family from Wiltshire/Somerset. We seem to be the only Eddolls in the world and all share a close common link.

Just seen your message.I have a number of Raleighs in my tree too. (my mother being one) However there are many, and one has to work back to find proof.Sir Walter's family died out, as far as we know. There is a possibility that our Ralleys/Raleighs are descended from Walter's brother Sir Carew, but we have to prove it.

I agree,as far as we know, the family of Sir Walter died out.We are said to be descended from his brother Sir Carew, but the best way to find out of course is to trace back from now ! Carew did have several children and they married and so on. I am still trying to get back there!

Hello Derek,
Yes,I do have Jack Stanworth's Military Record. He was in the Manchester Regiment,3rd Battalion. You'll find it on Ancestry - all 27 pages of his file! Some pages are of no use though,It tells about his loss of a leg,or rather ,the wait for an artificial one. There may be more, which I haven't looked for yet.Didn't see anything about the band.Maybe that info is elsewhere?
It would be interesting to find more about the early Ralleys/Rawleys/Raleighs wouldn't it?
I really am sorry not to have sent the photos yet-I've been catching up on the garden (large) after my visitors left.I will try to do that this week - son Robin will no doubt print them off for me -
Yes, I do hope we can meet in Sept.I'll let you know my exact plans when I have sorted them.
Time to get the supper.
Best wishes as ever, Joan

Hi Joan,
I think that the military band photo shows my grandfather, Jack Stanworth, seated to the left with the cornet, for there are two other photos showing both him and Aunt Kit blowing the cornet and wearing the same cap! Do you have his military record ?
The John and Ann Rawley is a sideways shot that I found in some marriage returns, however the dates fit in. Whilst in Jamestown, Virginia in May, I came across the records of several Ralleys/Rawleys/Raleighs ; four of them had Christian names beginning with the letter "J": Johns, James'. all from England, sailing there from 1607-1640, also an Andrew Ralley.
It would be so nice to see you when you come this way in September.
Every good wish, Derek.

Hi Joan

I just typed in Captain William Henty Rason into Google and various sites came up. Try Douai British Cemetery.

I am sorry if I have confused you (I get confused myself - there is just so much information on Google), I was trying to point out where the names Hector and Henty came from. It was Cornthwaite Hector who was the founder of Melbourne. Anna Jane Rason (nee Hector) was his aunt.

Another aunt was Maria Henty (nee Hector). The Hentys introduced sheep to Australia.

That line of Rasons were gentleman farmers and landowners, and money marries money, so I assume that's how they got the wealth.

I have found this line so interesting to research - the Rasons my side were all humble shoemakers.

Keep in touch best wishes Pat

I have had guests staying until today - cousins of my late husband, and so I have been occupied looking after them.
However,I hope to do something about them this week.
Janet,(one of my guests) is very experienced in FH research, and thinks that the photo of the group of musicians you sent is not of military interest, but rather a uniformed band. What do you think? Do you have any clues at all ?
No more just now,it is past my bedtime !
Regards, Joan

Hello Pat,
Thanks for the futher info regarding the children of Sir Cornthwaite.
I'll look up Capt. Wm Henty's Regimental record.Do you know where his memorial is?
I'll try to find out more about Percival, and let you know.
Maybe he had children hopefully! Otherwise,as you say the line died out.
The family seemed to have various connections to Australia!
Did you mean that William Rason was the founder of Melbourne? How did that happen? Cornthwaite was certainly a popular name in that family!
How and when did Henty introduce sheep to Australia?
Sorry about all these questions !
I spoke to my cousin Greville Madin today. He said " what did the family do to become wealthy ? "He still lives in Shropshire, and helped me a lot with my research in to Uncle Jack ane Edith Annie Rason.
All for now. Sorry I didn't reply sooner,I had cousins staying (on my husband's side) and they only departed this afternoon
My best wishes,
Joan

Hi Joan

Thanks for the e-mail.

The children of Sir Cornthwaite Hector William James Rason born Cleve Yatton, Somerset 1858 - 1927
m Mary Evelyn Terry 1883 at York.
children:
Captain William Henty Rason b 1884 d 1918. Canadian Regiment. Born at Guildford, Western Australia. Attended Guildford Grammar School. There is a memorial. Unmarried.

Ernest Hector George Rason born April 1887, Guildford, Australia. I don't know any more about him. Maybe died young. Sir Cornthwaite Rason died in 1927 Only his wife Mary and Edith Annie Rason are mentioned in the will.

Mabel born 1888 Guildford, Australia died 1941 Shropshire

Edith Ann b 1886 etc.
____________________________________________________

William Rason 1804 - 1865 farmer at Meads Eastbourne, Sussex m Anna Jane Hector
Anna Jane Hector was the aunt to Cornthwaite James Hector. He was the founder of Melbourne, Australia. (His father and her brother were also called Cornthwaite) ____________________________________________________

Anna Jane Hector had a sister called Maria Hector. She married George Henty of Northlands, Chichester, Sussex.
Henty introduced sheep to Australia.

I havn't heard of Percival Arthur before - perhaps he married and had issue. Otherwise, I assume the line ended with the death of Edith Annie.

I hope this helps. Best wishes Pat

Hello Pat,
It's good to share our research !Thanks for your notes,I have looked at mine too,and have similar, except the following, and a few I can add.
I think the Biography of Cornthwaite, from the Australian Dictionary of Biography has more detail than Wikipedia,I did look at both but only kept the Aus one.
Edith Annie was born in Perth,W. Aus.1885.buried 24 Apr 1963,aged 77 at Nairn,W.Aus
Mabel was born 1888 in Guildford, W.A.(I haven't had the copy of her will yet.
There were two more brothers :William Henty(or is it Henry?)b.1891 and Percival Arthur b.1893,both in Guildford W.A.My Uncle Jack Raleigh m. Edith Annie Apr.8th 1957 in Eskdaleside,Yorks.(he was born in Yorkshire)and they sailed for Aus a few days later on the Arcadia, ticketed to Adelaide.
I am researching the Brothers of Edith Annie, who probably married and had children, and I am hoping to find a living relative in Australia - a Rason-to try to get more on the family there, and maybe some photos. I don't have any photos of them, even Edith Annie.Maybe we can find out why Mabel was living at a vicarage!
So you are not so far away after all! Though it is a fair d
istance from Norfolk to Dorset, where I live
Yes,I'd love to know more about the Cornthwaite side.I've been researching my family about 10 years now. You are ahead of me !Best Wishes, Joan
I don't know why she was living at a vicarage.

That's about all the information I have, but can give you more on the Cornthwaite side if you are interested. My son Robin says he will copy them for me.
Thank you too for the second version of the tree.I am still intrigued to know where you located the earliest info !
Sorry I didn't reply straight away - I had my garden open for our Garden Club and so I had to concentrate on the weeds etc !!(it rained!) Yes,I had discovered Cornthwaite and family, and have begun to research each of the children in the hope of finding a living relative, and it looks as though you have found me rather! I don't know how much you know about my Uncle Jack(and Derek's great uncle) (I think that's correct- you will most likely hear from Derek too). A kind Rootsweb member looked up the deaths in W Australia of Jack and Edith. I have made enquiries about sending for copies of their death certs, but they seem to be far more expensive than our English ones.
I assume that you are in Australia? I wonder if you have any records of Jack and Edith ? I'd be most grateful for anything ! I have lots about Jack, and some of Edith, and I have just sent for Mabel's will (copy of). I could send copies of those if you wish.I must say again how pleased I was to see your message! Thank you! Best regards, Joan

Dear Derek,
It is really great to learn more about you! May I send the promised copy of the family photo to the address you give? Also thanks so much for the information you've researched.I will be able to fill in the gaps in mine ! I will see if there is anythingI can add perhaps,if you wish,as I have done a lot of 'sideways'research!Do you know where the earliest of our family were? I mean John Rawley and Ann.
When my Fred was training at the Salisbury Theological College some of our closest friends there were Methodists- the course being inter-denominational,and I am still in touch with them. Our eldest daughter Gill, plays the organ at their local Methodist Church in Great Glen (Leics),and I enjoy going there when I visit.
I hope to be visiting Kent in September, and would dearly love to meet with you,and your family,(I am assuming that you have one).I shall tell you more of mine if you would like to hear it !
It will be next week when I am able to send the photo etc to you,(ie by the time I have got things together). The reason is that I am working hard on our large garden(have just come in,as it was dark)because our Garden Club is visiting it on Monday,so I want it to look as good as it can be!
Gardening is my main passion, apart from Church activities and the family of course.
More later.
Joan

Dear Derek,
I am even more excited about finding our connection,as,if you have Crockfords for (up to) 1996 you will find my dear late husband listed under Laurence Alfred Frederick(Fred) Holland ! I don't have Crockfords for '96 onwards.Fred was ordained late in life, and chose to be non- stipendary. We have lots to share,I know. I'll be delighted to send a copy of the Bristol photo, and others. They lived in Pearl St. Bedminster.I don't have a photo of your Grandmother as a grown up,but I remember we visited the family once in Manchester (we lived in Salford then)and my impression was of a vivacious lady!I as very young then. That would be Aunt Elizabeth you visited in Derbys.(Buxton).
Your family tree sounds fascinating,I shall look forward to that so much. I am better at snail-mail really, and will happily send copies of photos. I do have so much paperwork too,as I am doing a project on the Raleigh Girls which is ongoing,as you may imagine!I'd love to share all of that with you ,as well as my ongoing research into Uncle Jack's life. I tend to go 'sideways'. As I said I live in Dorset,Beaminster in fact. Are you far away now,as you say you were in Bristol up to 2000 ?
There is so much I would love to say -
For the moment,I will look forward with anticipation to hearing from you again. I have just said to my son Robin that you and he are cousins, also my second son,and two daughters!Lots of family all at once!Aunty Kit's children were my cousins of course We are a large family!
My very best wishes,
Joan (I am 85 by the way)
Dear Joan,
Wow too! Yes, Aunt Kit is my grandmother, my father Dennis being her second child, I have memories of visiting your home in Shrewsbury in the 50's.My father took us to visit another sister in Derbyshire. I have some photos of
my grandmother, her sister Sally and another sister. I would love to have a copy of the family in Bristol, (I ministered in that city 1996-2000 in St Werburghs,Bishopston and Easton).
I'll draw up the family tree, my research gained most results from the Warwickshire records. Then, recently I was in Jamestown Virginia and foun outthat there were several "Rawleys, Raileys" who went there in the early 1600's. Looking forward to hearing from you. Derek.

Dear Derek,
Wow! I have just seen your message ! Funnily enough I had just returned from a Family History meeting where I had been displaying my Raleigh research so far.I have lots of information, but I haven't got back as far as the 17c,so I would love to have your tree. I don't have the photo you mention either,so would love to see that. Thanks!
I have a good many other photos, which I can share with you, including one about 1900,showing all the family, taken in Bristol. Do you have that one? I see you are a Stanworth - does that mean that you are descended from Aunty Kit? She was my mother,Miriam's sister. What we call a Eureka moment! I will look forward with great anticipation to hearing from you again. I live in Dorset, and am in touch with my Raleigh cousins in Shrewsbury, and in Yorkshire. More later!
Joan
