My neice Donna Rand Smock replied to your query. We are descendants of Robert and Amy. We went to WVirg and then Kansas City, MO & KS before 1830's. I have one younger brother and sister still living and Donna is my brothers' second daughter.

We can go back from Robert and Amy for another 10 generations. My daughter won a DAR award when she was 9 years old using her VT Great Grandparents as examples.

Would love to know how you fit into this group? We would be glad to share our tree as well. Thank you!
Betty Rand-Lathrop

My great grandfather is Robert Emmett Mitchell. On both of his marriage certificates he states he was born in 1864 in Rockville CT and his Father is Augustus Mitchell and his Mother is Ellen Rand. I can track Robert Emmett Mitchell from the time he marries Myra Haynes in 1885 in NorthHampton MA till his death, of a fall, in 1927. However, the first 21 years are a mystery.

I have found on census records an Ellen Rand, born in Middletown CT, whose Father was Robert Porter Rand and her Mother was Elizabeth Rand. I can track her till she is 17 years old, then she drops off all records.

I can not find any records concerning Augustus Mitchell.
Does any one have any records on any of these people?
Thank You, Eleanor Rose Webber

She married Albert J. She stayed sharp by doing crossword puzzles, reading and playing no-holds-barred gin with her sons.

Vera is survived by a brother, Daniel (Trish) Rand; sons, David Sr. (Betty) and Lewis (Melissa) Campana; grandchildren, David Jr. (Tim Danser), Sandi (Joseph) Casal and Erica Galpin; and great-grandchildren, Alec and Nathan Casal.

She is preceded in death by husband Albert, who died in 1998; brothers, Joseph, Leo, Floyd, Victor and David Rand; sisters, Katherine Bartolec, Marie Pesa and Virginia Rogan.

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on today, Nov. 27, 2011 at the funeral home.

Her family requests memorial tributes to be made in her name to the Second Harvest Food Bank, 2805 Salt Spring Road, Youngstown, OH 44509.

Family and friends may visit the Book of Memories at www.rossifunerals.com to view this tribute and send condolences to Vera’s family.

Mahoning

Clara Estell Rand

Hi –

I am researching a family mystery concerning my apparent great-grandmother Clara E Rand and I was hoping that someone on this board might have some information about her.

Clara E Rand (also called Estell) was born in 1857 in New Hampshire, the daughter of Leonidas Franklin Rand (b-1835, Portsmouth NH) and Sarah Head (b- 1838, Massachusetts). She is descended from emigrant Francis Rand who was killed with his wife in the Brackett’s Lane Massacre in 1691.

She married William Porter Adams in 1880 and lived in Boston.

From what we know, she had two children, my grandfather William Princeton Adams (b-1886 – d-1983) and a daughter Christine Mary, birth date unknown.

Some tragedy occurred in my grandfather’s youth that he would never speak about, perhaps in the 1890s or early 1900s. He intimated that both his father William, his mother Clara and his sister died at about the same time, leaving him an orphan.

We do not know who raised him after that because he would not speak of that either, though it might have been a family named Robinson with Louisville KY connections.

We have discovered that his father William Porter Adams did indeed die suddenly in 1891 when my grandfather was five.

But census records indicate that his mother Clara (Estell) Rand Adams was alive until 1930. She is listed as a widow with no living children.

For example, in 1920 she was living in Boston’s Ward 19 in a house with her father Franklin Rand (86) and other relatives, Mary Light (58), Elizabeth Rand (51) and Katherine Rand (48).

Whatever happened that caused my grandfather to become separated from Sarah Estell and raised by other people is a mystery to us. We are fairly certain that he had no idea Clara was alive when he was already in his 40s.

We would appreciate it if anyone on this board has any information on this branch of the Rand family that might help us unravel this.

Thanks.
Hi,

I'm wondering if you have anything else on this family? Do you know who Wm & Sarah's sons married by any chance? Did wm & Sarah have any daughters? I am looking for the parents of a John & William (brothers) born about that time who lived in Chester, NH, not far from Epsom.

I have a William Rand of Chester b: abt 1755 m: Mary Rand daughter of Joseph Rand and Deborah Seavey of Chester (later Gilmanton/Gilford). William and Mary had one known child Joseph b: 1783. William died between May 1789-Dec 1790. It's likely Mary died before him. Joseph ended up with Mary's parents & later her brother Philbrook when William died. As an adult Joseph married Nancy Rand daughter of Jeremiah & moved back to Chester. Joseph & Nancy are my gggg grandparents. They had 2 sons and 5 daughters.

John of Chester was born about 1759 and died 1818 a59. I can confirm very little about him. Some say Jeremiah of Chester was this John's son but that is impossible as Jeremiah was born in 1761. There could be an elusive older John but I can't confirm him as of yet. Jeremiah had 5 sons & 3 daughters. I have a ton on Chester descendants.

Can you rule out this John & William as different from yours?

Also if you wouldn't mind sending me what you have anyway on your 4 brothers families (and if they had sisters) I'd really appreciate it. Yours seem to be an elusive bunch and there might be hint somewhere for me. I have missing pieces in Chester in the form of women and men by the name of Samuel, but that's too complicated to explain here.

I haven't seen anything on your Rands in all the years I've been researching Rands in the area, so I'm really curious. Chester Rands have become my specialty out of necessity more than anything :)

Thanks!

Hello! I have been going crazy over this one. I am trying to locate any information on the above mentioned Robert Rand. His parents were Robert and Elizabeth Welch Rand. It is believed that he went on to NH with his parents in 1730's.

My other search is for the parents of Robert Rand b. 1750 in Westminster VT. He marred Emma (amy?) Averil. d. 1828.

In looking at everything I have, I believe the missing Robert is the father of Robert Rand of Westminster VT. The dates would be right.

If your wondering where I fall into this line, Robert Rand b 1750 in Westminster VT is my Great Great Great Great Grandfather.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Kami Rand Bedingfield

Betty,

Robert RAND and Emma AVERILL were my 5g-grandparents. I descend from their son Robert. You say he "went to West Virginia then to MO/KS in 1830." http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:a1949... claims that "Robert and Mehitable started west sometime before 1820 with her parents. They intended to go to Kentucky, but they got sick and remained in Brook Co., West Virginia for 8 years. They purchased some land on February 8, 1833 from Oliver Brown, Jr and his wife Ann for $400. The property was located in Holidays Cove, near Harmon Creek, 1 1/2 miles northeast of Edington, West Virginia. The family later moved to Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio [just across the Ohio River from Holidays Cove]. In 1840, the family purchased 200 acres in Jackson County, West Virginia from Benjamin and Rachel Mairs. Then to Cottageville, Jackson, Co, West Virginia, where they lived 20 years until Roberts death."

All this is consistent with what I found. In 1820, Robert and his family were in Wellsburg, Brooke Co., VA (now WV). In 1830, they were in Wayne Twp., Jefferson Co., Ohio (just across the river from Holidays Cove, VA (now WV) where another researcher (bugme@airmail.net: http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:a1949...) says they were in 1833. In 1840, they were in Jackson Co., VA (now WV). He is buried in Byerle Cemetery, Pleasant View, Jackson Co.

Given the 10-year gap between this family's presence in 1830 OH and then 1840 VA (now WV) and hearing that they wanted to move to KY, I'd like to know more about their MO/KS connection. Did they try again to move west and then return to VA (now WV)?

Regards,
Mary Richardson
mrichson@ix.netcom.com
